The joke is on those who will actually try to get those ascended. Not me in any case. I’m done with GW2, as many people, but I did try to give it an honest chance after seeing all my headstart friends leave.
A growing story that I don’t think is going away despite the people who still insist that 460k is a proper success for an mmo.
Logged into my server every place I went had a tiny handful of people, even the main towns were dead and this was during peak hours. Can’t imagine where these 460k are located.
All I logged in for was to test out the newest changes to my class and to the loot system. The loot system looks like it’s received a small polish which is a good start but it simply won’t be enough I don’t think to help people reach their goals with the way they’ve done the enormous number of items needed to make the ascended weapons or gear.
They have to add these items to nodes as well so that people can gather a small portion of them to help offset the months that it’s literally going to take some people to reach these levels, they’ve forgotten 250 was too much and has added the larger 500.
did you check Rata Sum? people are flocking the flavor of the half the month.
500 of a pretty much easily acquired material. try comparing those to 250 charged lodestones.

The sheer number of names on my screen in LA hurts my eyes. The special effects in world events made my eyes bleed. Maybe you need to go to another server.

some servers don’t really have the population of others, moot point.

There’s one way to find a lot of people.“ZERG FARMS”.
@Galen, you’re trying to bail water out of a sinking ship hun. While you have sound logical points, they aren’t going to listen to you. What we’re experiencing here is (what I like to call) spoiled brat syndrome, and there isn’t a kitten thing anyone can do to fix it, except for the person them self making the mature decision to not be one.
Some people wanted another gear tier, now we have it. BUT it wasn’t given to them in raids, or dungeons, so they aren’t happy. They don’t want to craft it, and open world loot drops (which are extremely rare, but make sense) aren’t satisfactory.
Some people wanted something to make crafting more worthwhile, and potentially more lucrative. However, the new mats are time gated, leveling the playing field, making it so the market cant be flooded, and thus making it easier to create and keep a stable, high price for them. BUT this isn’t good enough because everyone can’t have it all / do it all right now.
Some people don’t like to gather materials, but some of the materials are account bound and simply can’t be purchased. They come from various drops throughout the world, requiring people to play (specific parts of) the game. They feel this is a ‘grind,’ which, in some cases I could understand if you only got 1-3 per drop. However, considering most drops are 10+, I don’t foresee it being ‘grindy,’ although for more time limited players, it will simply take longer to get everything they need. Again, people aren’t happy with this because they can’t just let someone else do the work for them, or they can’t have it all right now.
The actual ascended drops and crafted items are account bound, which pretty much everyone is unhappy with. They want to be able to sell them, after all if they have the gold or the time to make/get them…why shouldn’t they be able to cash in? (sarcasm there)
We, the players, ask for things. Shout gimme gimme gimme, like starving baby birds; however when Anet tries to comply in any fashion, its simply not good enough. I’ve said it many times, but I’ll say it again. They are kittened if they do, kittened if they don’t. They would be further ahead to just make their plans, and go with it. Those that like what they get will stay, and the rest will go. Its harsh, but that’s simply life.
I NEED HELP!
OK, now that I have your attention, can someone please show me where the required grind is in this game in order to be able to proceed to the next tier of content? I seem to be having trouble finding it. I tried going into WvW without ascended gear and was able to… is there an ascended only WvW? I visited and helped beat Jormag, assorted invasions, dungeons, jumping puzzles, etc. and haven’t been able to find the gated content beyond those that require ascended gear… can someone point that out to me? Because until I find it I’m having a difficult time accepting that this type of optional grind is anyways close to violating the “not a grindy game” concept ANet originally spoke of. Yes, I see optional grindy things for those that want the longer term goals, but the required stuff… I can’t seem to find it. Help me out people!
Only when you go lvl 10 or higher.
So it is not required.
Try againIt is required. For lvl10 or higher.
Your logic…
In which you will get naturally by just playing it. I haven’t meet anybody who had to stay on the same level of Fractal and playing it over and over and over again till they got the gear they needed. Everybody I know who went through the fractals, got their gear naturally, without ever having to play the same level over and over and over again. That is why it is not a grind
You get gear naturally grinding WoW raid. So what?
Yes, you get it naturally by GRINDING WoW raid. This is different than getting the gear naturally by going from one level of fractal to the next never having to repeat the same level over and over and over again. In a WoW raid, after you have completed the raid once, the challenge is really gone, you are now just going through the motions to get the gear you needed, with no challenge. In the fractals, you are not stuck on a level grinding it to get the gear needed to be able to play the next level. If you were stuck on the same level to get the gear you need, that level would be easy and no challenge since you already completed it once.
WoW has a grind to continue on to the next challenge, GW2 Fractals have no grind to get to the next challenge.

WoW is another game. We are talking about GW 2.
Did you read to what I responded? We are still searching for some content that is required to have ascended that you have to grind for. You can play Fractal of The Mists fine without ascended if you pick lvl 1 – 9. And if you do want higher, you don’t need to grind for it.
The point is, people complain first then look/think.

They will not be kittened if they stuck to their manifesto.
You are right about the go part, and there’s nothing harsh about it.
The details of acquiring ascended weapons are secondary. AWs should never have existed in the first place.
Dismissing others’ opinions by calling them spoiled brats is very mature indeed.

Can people please stop qq’ing over a gear grind, etc… You just need exotic gear to do most of the harder stuff in the game and for Fractals you don’t need the ascended weapons. If you don’t like the way you obtain these weapons, then don’t bother, you don’t need them!
Just play the parts of the game you like and if you don’t like any of them, play another game!

Except WoW now has LFR (read: easy) mode and they plan on adding a Friend and Family (read: infantile) mode to the raids. In these modes you can wear rare-equivalent gear and still defeat the bosses.
That makes real raids optional if you just want to see the content, and the situation is again comparable to fractals.

Thanks, i dont think they are aware that other games have evolved. LFR is in WoW since MoP i believe.
SWTOR, for instance, has Story (dumb) mode, Hard and Nightmare modes since release. Even Story mode drops some useful tokens for gear and you can faceroll it just to see content if you want.

It is not just agony that is ramped up, the actual difficulty is ramped up as well. Mobs become more powerful and can have more spawned than the previous times. Mobs can have additional skills they can use. WoW has really added a lot of things to cater to the casual end of the spectrum. Raids are not nearly as inaccessible as they were a couple years ago.
You dont need to ask for it, there is a thing called consiquence.
Its really simple really. Ascended gear was introduced because Arenanet felt there were enough people asking for vertical progression to warrant it. Unless all those people quit the need didnt vanish. Ergo once those people full gear all their characters there will be this same problem again. Ergo when you’re asking for a small time frame to get a full ascended gear set you’re essentially asking for a new gear tier because arenanet will be forced to do it in order to provide goals for people who dont care for cosmetics. Thats in my opinion much much worst then taking ages to finish a single tier set. Why? because of power creep. A single tier is no big deal, but if we get 2 or 3 arenanet will be forced to do harder content which means new tiers will no longer be completely optional. Its been less then 24hrs and you already decided that drop rates are way too low ?
You think thats objective?Really, they didnt learn? hmm funny cause provided drop rate inst impossible I would have swore you could get ascended weapons not just by crafting but also killing champions, doing jumping puzzles, doing world bosses, doing WvW and more.
They’re already doing that? in 2 weeks time we get the revamped tequalt and from the video it seems very challenging.
Zerg != auto win they did last update that didnt stop people from zerging though, it just had people shouting in map to break the zerg so we could win the event. Zerging isnt something anet can do something about, its a player problem who value greed over anything else.
I’ve been playing this game for almost a year and have only gotten 2 Exotic drops ever, Ascended is higher tier so if logic dictates then it would have a smaller drop rate than Exo’s (if I’m wrong, feel free to correct me). 1 re-vamped mega boss is all we get after a YEAR? It’s not new content, it’s a fix. Also, I didn’t say there was anything wrong with zergs. I meant that it was wrong for Anet to release new events that required ONLY zerging to win. There was no strategy, no difficulty, all you needed was a lot of players and you win because in GW2 when you fail an event, you still win. It’s funny, because I remember when Ascended was first announced, the forum was full of raging topics, I find it hard to believe that most people wanted more gear tiers. They wanted new challenging content for endgame.

There is literally only like 20g worth of mats there… I could go out and collect all that stuff in a single day.
Am I looking at a different page then people here?

I visited and helped beat Jormag, assorted invasions, dungeons, jumping puzzles, etc. and haven’t been able to find the gated content beyond those that require ascended gear… can someone point that out to me? Because until I find it I’m having a difficult time accepting that this type of optional grind is anyways close to violating the “not a grindy game” concept ANet originally spoke of. Yes, I see optional grindy things for those that want the longer term goals, but the required stuff… I can’t seem to find it. Help me out people!
Only when you go lvl 10 or higher.

Dont overexagerate. Once you know what to do in fractal its the same. Fractals arent some ever changing and evolving stuff, its same crap over and over again gated by agony.
It is not just agony that is ramped up, the actual difficulty is ramped up as well. Mobs become more powerful and can have more spawned than the previous times. Mobs can have additional skills they can use. And again, you can complete the first 10 levels and see all the content without ever needed ascended gear, this in contrast to WoW where you have to complete and repeat the same raid over and over and over again in order to see the next raid. In WoW if you want to see all content, you have to grind, in GW2, if you want to see all the content, no grind is needed at all.
Wrong.
Don’t have time to read the whole thread, but if Anet is reading this like they claim they do.
You guys got it back in GW1. Max stat gear was pretty easy to get. It wasn’t necessarily pretty, it couldn’t always accept all upgrades, but it was easily available. You never really had issues wondering if everyone had it (you might complain about their build, of course).
You want to make long term, grindy goals for the progression players. Fine. Just don’t make it game stat intertwined. Call me super casual if you like – but I got 8 mouths to feed. That is, 8 level 80s, who aren’t even all in exotics. And now, karma is super nerfed (24k total karma a month from 30 dailies and monthly). Do you even want new players gearing up at all? Temple exotics became just that much harder. Prices on the TP, while they will likely settle, will still remain pretty high.
You’re making a less and less “different” kind of MMO. You already rejected a lot of the more innovative ideas of GW1 (no, it wasn’t perfect, but you guys threw out the baby with the bathwater), and now you’re cleaning up the last remnants of offering something different.
Logged into my server every place I went had a tiny handful of people, even the main towns were dead and this was during peak hours. Can’t imagine where these 460k are located.
The sheer number of names on my screen in LA hurts my eyes. The special effects in world events made my eyes bleed. Maybe you need to go to another server.
I play on a primarily oceanic server and during the day here mountain time I was in overflow non stop. At one point during the scarlet attacks I had to turn my gfx all the way down because the sheer number of people out there made it rather hard to play.

WoW has a grind to continue on to the next challenge, GW2 Fractals have no grind to get to the next challenge.
So what you are saying is that Blizzard got rid of the grind in order to see all the content? You can go to one raid, complete it once, and then move right to the next raid, with no need to get all the gear from that previous raid? Sounds like Blizzard took a page from Arenanets book, by making grinding completely optional to enjoy all the content the game has to offer.
Nobody asked for a new tier of gear and we CERTAINLY didn’t ask for such ridiculous requirements to create them.
Actually, this is wrong. Some people did, a lot of people did actually so your argument is null and void.
Apparently so many that ANet is willing to throw their manifesto out the window.
And kitten off the ‘minority’ that was drawn to buy the game because of that very document.
OR OR …. they figured you know people who say they dont want better gear actually mean they dont want better gear… so lets see some people want better gear other people dont want better gear. Ohh I know lets make said gear entirely optional so the people who want it can have it, those who dont want it can ignore it.
Then it turns out we dont want that gear actually means we want it now and not a second later so time gates are unacceptable.
Ergo no, they didnt really throw away their manifesto. Its just your interpretation of the manifesto isnt based on what the manifesto says, its based on what you want it to say. For example. If the manifesto said “Our games aren’t about preparing to have fun, or about grinding for a future fun reward.” that doesnt mean BiS is very easy to obtain. it means you dont have to grind for any gear to get around blocks in content and thus their respective rewards. Ergo if the rare tier is enough to play any content out there they can introduce 1000 new tiers and that statement would still be true. You would be extremely unhappy cause you personally wouldnt be able to enjoy the game untill you got all those 1000 new tiers sure, I understand that but that wouldnt mean they did u-turn on their manifesto.

You can enter www at level 1.
Try it and then get back to us.
Once, one early morning I tried doing WvW with 0 armor on for science. I had a common level 80 weapon and nothing else on, no trinkets and no armor.
Result was 7 kills 2 deaths and 2 people who ran away the moment they saw me … can blame them I would run away as well if a guy in his underwear chased me with a staff.
To be fair, I have Volcanus, Vision of the Mists, The Anomaly, Bolt and Howler, a few Corrupted and Titan’s Vengeance, Ascended Fractal backpiece. Even I am complaining about the upcoming grind for ascended if I choose to embark on it.
And a lot of it has to do with needing to upgrade 80% of the above mentioned into ascended.
Are you kidding me? what exactly do you find grindy out of the ascended weapon requirements after crafting volcanus and 2 legendaries?

Wrong.
In what? Since you gave no specifics, I can only guess that you do not have anything. According
Mobs gain new skills as you progress: Fact
More mobs can be spawned in a fractal as you progress: Fact
Mobs become harder to kill: Fact
No ascended gear is needed in order to see all 10 dungeons: Fact
do you think an ascended weapon would make any little bit of difference on liadri?
snip
Its more than 5%, but i guess you conveniently forgot it.
You also forgot to include full ascended vs. full exotics difference.
Its not and I included a full set… The full set improves your stats by 11% but your armor is only 1/2 the stats so overall your improvement will be 5%
Gear wars 2 ,Farm wars 2 , Grindwars 2.All of those is what gw2 has become instead of actually having guild wars.A tittle that doesn’t even relate to their game in anyway….
I like Grind Wars 2 the best. Its most fitting
That’s a very fitting name, as long as you preface it with the words “there really isn’t any reason to…”
Stop this nonsense please. Would you do Liadri in all greens? Any time they release anything remotely challenging you’ll want the best gear available.
do you think an ascended weapon would make any little bit of difference on liadri?
lets assume you do 8000 damage every hit. and ascended weapon would give you a 5% advantage over that means you do 8400 damage instead. Which means you save yourself 1 attack every 20 you do. problem is with 8000 damage liadri would die before you even do the 20 attacks.
I wouldn’t give a kitten if all there is to ascended is the weapon. That’s clearly not the case.
As for Liadri, replace that encounter by any new and difficult content. Not that we’ve had a lot of that, but we will likely have some in the future.
Looking forward to it. So far I’ve done all of it without even a single piece of ascended gear. When I fail to conquer something I will honestly let you know so far its fully doable with no ascended gear.
Nobody asked for a new tier of gear and we CERTAINLY didn’t ask for such ridiculous requirements to create them.

They have to add these items to nodes as well so that people can gather a small portion of them to help offset the months that it’s literally going to take some people to reach these levels, they’ve forgotten 250 was too much and has added the larger 500.
appearantly they were hiding in this threat, luckly someone took some screenshots:

You’re absolutely right. Sometimes I ask myself why I even bother but there is always that hope that presented with logical arguments perhaps a few people will realise things arent all bad like they imagine.
I dont expect people who hate time-gating to love them just cause they’re keeping far away that next tier of gear they hate more. But I would hope some might come to see it as a necessary evil that isnt all bad… nothing else. We’ll see. Hope is last to die after all.

Thats 3 weapons. Volcanus I have to upgrade to ascending. My 2nd legendary was made by G given during the AP rewards along with accumulated stuff in my bank. I bought the precursor cheaply for both. Its not just 10 weapons I have to upgrade to ascended. Probably at least 50 weapons in total.
Do u know math?
EDIT: Clarity
I have no clue whether you’re right or wrong. Its just been 1 day its too early to say how good / bad the drop rate is.
Whats for sure is with ascended gear they’re trying to make drops a viable way to get gear. (because now instead of getting a random weapon with random stats you get to choose the type of weapon and they type of stats it has) That means they’re trying to make it a viable way to acquire the weapon. While you’re right and logically you’d expect the drop rate to be worst off its entirely possible that it will not be simply because they want drops to be a way to earn an ascended weapon as well. Thats not to say its going to be common, it will still be less then 1 drop every couple of weeks for the hardcore grinders for sure so i’d be surprised if casual people would get more then 1 a month. But we’ll see, so far we simply dont know.
Oh please, Fractals, guild missions, Queen’s gauntlet, Molten Alliance base dungeon, Aetherblade retreat were all content that was harder then the stuff available that didnt require zerg to win. You couldnt zerg it if you wanted to! lets be objective here and not generalize too much.

Going lvl 10 or higher is optional, not required.
And you don’t have to use the weapons they added to finish it.Uh oh, you should probably go back to read what you responded to.
raiding in WoW is optinal, noone says you have to raid. Is there any point in all of this?
But you don’t even have to do dungeons to get ascended gear here…you can just do some jumping puzzles. Hell, you can portal to the end of jumping puzzles. And therein lies the difference.
To be fair, I have Volcanus, Vision of the Mists, The Anomaly, Bolt and Howler, a few Corrupted and Titan’s Vengeance, Ascended Fractal backpiece. Even I am complaining about the upcoming grind for ascended if I choose to embark on it.

I am not exactly sure how that answers my question of what requirements specifically on an ascended weapon you find grindy to get more so then that admittedly extremely impressive arsenal you have that… no truely I am really impressed and cant pick my jaw from the floor yet.

Or you just find the forums more fun than the game itself. Like me. You know, assume moral and logical high ground and go against the ignorant forum whiners. Good practice for developing language and deduction skills.
Or maybe not.
Ergo going with worst case scenario the question becomes
what is the most grindy
370g + 30 skill points
or
63 karma, 15 dungeons, 17 champions and 17 temples?Yep pretty sure vulcanus is much much grindier
And so would be
Vision of the mists, the corrupted weapons, The crossing, The moon and many other named exotic weapons.
You are forgetting molten lodestones etc drop during farming / champion boxes so you may not need to buy as many molten lodestones from TP.
370g/10G per hour farming (from what I hear on average) =37 hrs of farming if you dont flip TP at all or get any exotics during farming.
Skill points u can get from boxes etc and leveling so it is very negligible if you are farming for that objective
“15 dungeons, 17 champions and 17 temples.”
Its 25 dungeons for empyreal, Einstein.
17 champions = 1 hr worth of invasion
25 COF P1 daily = 15 min (if there is no associated time with opening COF with usual LFG) x 25 = 6.25hr
17 temples = I am guessing half an hour for the fastest temple = 8.5
Total 20hr provided all the drops for all the mats are on average.
I see your calculations dont include the mats for the weapon components as well. They aren’t exactly cheap either. I am estimating 50G at least but at least the above mentioned provide G.
Or the time and money needed to get level 500 in crafting in the first place. + 3G for the recipe.
And heres the kicker: if you want Volcanus with ascended stats, you have to grind for both and there is not much overlap.

I did Liadri with rares. That said, with ascended I’d have saved like 50 tickets or even used different strategies.
You can probably do all contents with greens. It’s just like 50 times harder.
And damage is not the only stat. There are defensive ones as well.
The biggest problem with this that a lot of people are ignoring is they could have created new content for this gear but instead they made some mundane, boring grind. Why not just have the weapons behind points? Then I’d be able to choose the way I want to play and still work toward what I want to work toward.
Grinding mats and all that garbage is just so boring. Create something compelling, like a new dungeon or something, IDK..anything. You spend all this time on SAB why not throw some rewards behind it besides a few skins? IMHO whoever makes decisions at Anet is bonkers.

remind me, what is this persuasion technique consisting of flat out all around insults called again?
to answer a great OP question that would be food for a new thread:
I find grindy:
get crafting up to 500 (due to market sharks mostly)
dragonite ore
The number of weapond required (don t forget that most players will need minimum 3 weapons and giving up all builds they used to change)
Cost of trasmutations to get their skins back -.- (this is annoying also)

Are you kidding me? what exactly do you find grindy out of the ascended weapon requirements after crafting volcanus and 2 legendaries?
Thats 3 weapons. Volcanus I have to upgrade to ascending. My 2nd legendary was made by G given during the AP rewards along with accumulated stuff in my bank. I bought the precursor cheaply for both. Its not just 10 weapons I have to upgrade to ascended. Probably at least 50 weapons in total.
Do u know math?
I am not exactly sure how that answers my question of what requirements specifically on an ascended weapon you find grindy to get more so then that admittedly extremely impressive arsenal you have that… no truely I am really impressed and cant pick my jaw from the floor yet.
I am more impressed that you can’t divide 500/20. I am not sure Empyreal drop is daily or not so for the most time efficent method may be gated and thus 25 days for the empyreal drops alone.

Skill points u can get from boxes etc and leveling so it is very negligible if you are farming for that objective“15 dungeons, 17 champions and 17 temples.”
Its 25 dungeons for empyreal.
17 champions = 1 hr worth of invasion
25 COF P1 daily = 15 min (if there is no associated time with opening COF with usual LFG) x 15 = 6.25hr
17 temples = I am guessing half an hour for the fastest temple = 8.5
Total 20hr provided all the drops for all the mats are on average.I see your calculations dont include the mats for the weapon components as well.
Its 25 dungeons right but please notice i deducted your 10 dungeons for simpliciation reasons.
Yes they most definitely include the mats… thats what the 42/53g where for. One based on regular materials priced as off last week before the artificial inflation and 53g if you had to buy them today. I even ignored the fact most people have them already
for reference these are the ingredients i went by:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/crafting/Ascended-Crafting-Material-List/first
Also please note invasions are essentially over. You cannot do 10g per hour doing invasion anymore.
There you’re right, if you want vulcanus with ascended stats you have to do them both. But I wasnt denying that, i only said ascended weapons thanks to the time gates are much less grindy to do then named exotics nothing else.

Like I said vulcanous includes 10 dungeons runs.
Since we’re comparing the grind between vulcanous and an ascended weapons I deducted common elements from both.
Funny how you noticed 15 dungeons runs instead of 25 dungeon runs but had no issue that while intially i said raw material for vulcanous was 470g but then when comparing the grind I listed it as 370g you had no issue with though
To get back on topic…
All I can say is that, had they not introduced Ascended gear, I’d probably still be playing. Heck, so would my old guildies from Guild Wars. But since November, all of us have, finally, at some point, got frustrated with grind, gear, RNG and where this game is going and lost interest.
I think that grind, in general, as described by Mike O’Brien and as implemented in Guild Wars (cosmetic only), is something we didn’t mind so much. You could do it or not do it. Same with RNG, because Legendaries were (at the time) just gaudy-looking versions of exotic weapons. But Ascended killed it. For all of us. From almost all of them I hear: “I don’t play GW2 any more because of Ascended gear.” I’m willing to bet that there are many, many, many people who’ve stopped playing because of it.
I tried to come back in July…was giving the game another chance…thought maybe that Ascended was quietly being shelved and there wouldn’t be any more past the accessories and backpacks…and WHAM-O: new Ascended weapons announced, with armor to come.
No thanks. I’ve got better things to do. For the record, ArenaNet. I don’t play any more because of Ascended gear. Add that to your pile of statistics.
… I don’t play any more because of Ascended gear. …
I’ve seen stranger reasons mentioned before… but not by much.
