To be honest with the announcement of GW2 I was excited to see a sequel of the original.
I thought they would improve a lot on what GW1 didn’t do very well, as well as adding some new interesting mechanics into the game.

Sadly, I can’t call this game a ‘’Guild Wars 2’‘.
I don’t feel like I am playing in the same universe.
I don’t feel like I am on adventuring through a world full of legends and prophecies.
What the kitten happened to the PvP?
It’s a game full of techs and mechs, zergfests and players can just teleport/shadowstep/leap all over the place…

Since release I have been ’’waiting’’ for things to be added and I just feel like it’s not going to happen. Ever.

Been really craving for a sequel, I have been playing GW1 still for a while now but with the lack of support from Arenanet and the low population it’s just not the same as it used to be.

I hope one day we’ll get a proper sequel but I should just stop fooling myself I guess.

For those who keep saying ‘’but in the lore Guild Wars is…’‘, for real?
The name should also bring it’s game.

Was GW1 that bad to drastically change everything?
Hell no, it was something incredibly unique.
If I really wanted to play a different type of game than GW1 I would have been playing something else already.

I want to play a sequel of the original, not something completely different.

I thought they did a sequal bit called Guild Wars beyond. It bridges the gap between Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2.

No, Utopia was the cancelled expansion. Beyond was created as the bridge between GW1 and GW2

EDIT: Yes Utopia was the canceled one and instead the GW2 started to be projected and GW:EotN to be made.

Utopia was the expansion that was cancelled, it was going to be an Aztec themed expansion. It got replaced later by Eye of the North when they decided to make GW2.

Pretty sure GW Beyond was all developed after EOTN Release.

The Utopia expansion was salvaged and reused some assets on EOTN expansion.

No one asked anyone to change anything. Just pointing that out right here, right now.

The OP stated he desires a follow up to GW1, not a theft of names and places used to make an entirely different game. You have two camps here, and the responses will reflect this.

Camp 1: GW1 players who were looking forward to a new engine to GW1 expanding in to crafting (I guess) and such, to provide a new experience with the old game. This was pretty much sold as GW2 right up until the launch when it was clear the Manifesto was ditched.

Camp 2: Players who never played GW1 during it’s glory days and come to GW2 from other games. These are the ones typically stalwartly defending everything in GW2 and poo-pooing anyone who brings up anything with GW1 in the discussion.

1 original founder is still with Arenanet, 1 other started up Undead Labe, where they made that console game State of Decay, and are currently making a new mobile device game. I wouldn’t be expecting them to do any spiritual successor anytime soon, looks like they have no interest in doing anything like Guild Wars. The last person behind Guild Wars 1 lead the company that brought out Tera MMO game, and then left that company and got hired by Undead Labs.

again I have to point out the obvious.

1. I didn’t ask for anything, perhaps you should reel in your obligatory negative comments.

2. Who are you to tell people what they will and will not get? You are a forum poster. You don’t run this company, or as far as I know, any game developing company.

Stick to what you know and not what you want to PUT OUT THERE, it isn’t working.

Now your challenge, explain in detail why the original poster is not allowed to discuss what he would like in a future game product. Explain why it isn’t possible, plausible or marketable. Do something constructive instead of opening the door, say NO!, and closing it again.

Hey dude you are walking into a wall.

Same thing happened with Diablo 2. Blizzard North original employees left Blizzard to work on other projects. Diablo 3 was a disaster at launch mainly because it wasn’t the D3 people were expecting. Just as in the case of GW2, the departure from the previous game was so stark …I will leave it at that.

Guild Wars 1 is why I bought Guild Wars 2. I thought it would be at least somewhat similar to the original. Was it? Other than it being in Tyria, not really.

The combat was watered down and more visual effects were added. Tactical builds were for the most part wiped out. PvP was slain.

Would I, or many others, have bought this game had I/we known how it would turn out?
Probably not.

Me too and what is now left of gw1? they even destroyed LA.
Also the community in gw1 were great. In my experience, Here you can talk about something and none answer in GC while in gw1 people could take a joke without thinking you were racist or something. Gameplay is one thing but MMO is pointless without players.
I could go play a game which is designed around singleplayer like skyrim.
I loved everything about gw1 especially the holy trinity ! I was a decent healer too.
I been trying to get into Tera just because of that this dps race can get monotoneous really fast. Unfortunalry the community in that game is really toxic. Like its full of teens which just got their first pimples.

I’ve been fooling myself for two years now; clinging to hope and avoiding how I really felt. But those feelings have fully coalesced, like a great storm that finally let it pour, and the truth is cold and apparent now. This is not the series I loved. This is not the sequel I wanted.

At some point, that sequel was being made. Then, piece by piece, the game was changed to suit a different audience. All of the complex mechanics of GW1 were abandoned for simplistic, homogenized ones. Class specialization and deck-building style, synergy-focused skill bars replaced with classes that all fill all roles and skills built into your weapon. Intelligent mobs with patrol routes, organized groups, with player skills and aggro and priority mechanics replaced with solitary enemies with no skills and the AI of rocks. Prestige weapon and armor sets that required work replaced with heavy, heavy gem store focus. Somewhere along the line, the decision was made to cater to the lowest-common-denominator, with a business model to make any freemium game proud.

I can’t do it anymore, Anet. I’ve been with this series since GW1 launch. The Guild Wars I loved is gone. I’ve tried to care about GW2, tried for so long, but I just can’t. My interest and my dedication have evaporated. You lost me.

I’ll still be logging in to unlock episodes. But I don’t think I’ll be playing anymore. I don’t enjoy it anymore. Peace.

I too was hopeful for a guild wars 2 that resembled the first game a bit more. Probably more in the character build side of the house along with the pvp.

I guess I wanted GW minus all of the instancing, having more of a seamless world and a better loot system. The loot is frustrating and unrewarding for me in both games. A game more focused on group content like guild wars was before heroes entered the picture with Elona. Sure, henchies were used, but it was much more likely that you would group for much of the content before going with them.

The only thing that hurt that aspect was the wait for healers time to time.

The pvp here is fast but gets boring pretty fast with just the one mode. WvW is nice but can have huge breaks between skirmishes.

The lore isn’t terrible compared to the first game. The dungeoning system in the first game were better I think, mainly due to the fact that they were the big parts of the overall story being told. The elite dungeons were fun imo.

I also think the team aspect was a bit more defined. Healers added another dimension to the game. Interupting and conditions played valuable roles. Build diversity played a larger role overall. I never felt like meta shifts due to nerfs killed classes. I felt like they were intentional to change up the staleness that would occur if builds were left in too long. That seemed great for pvp.

I will say that even though there were a multitude of skills that never saw the light of day, there were plenty that changed the landscape of entire encounters. Ranger spirits are a great example.

Resurrecting being so tactical in the first game, I feel carried much more weight. In pvp anyways. In pve it’s pretty much the same thing minus the downed state. That is if you were any/monk, any/rit, or vice versa. Res signets of course could be used by any class.

I also liked how the weapons were treated in the first game. Some of that has been built into runes and such like for example: bleeding/poison last longer. I think I liked the blunt/piercing/elemental/slashing more that what we have here.

The energy management system also gave more weight to decision making I think.
Interupting here is a guessing game 99% of the time.
We exchanged all of that for dodge.

I am probably of the mind that we could have had it all. Hopefully when/if they give us a form of housing they do a better job than the guild halls they gave us in game one.

Overall I do feel that I have been playing in two different worlds though even with the abundance of gw lore i gw2. Dunno how that would ever get fixed. That’s way too subjective. In fact it’s all subjective.

I dunno.

Aside from that one line – “We take everything you love about GW1…” – I thought it was pretty apparent through the blog posts and demo’s that GW2 would be a lot different from GW1 right from the off, both lorewise and mechanically – no dual classing, set skill slots, traits, no healer, “humans are friends, not food” mentality of the Charr now and so on – before they even opened up the game for pre-order.

I also wanted to throw my two cents in.

I agree with the OP and many of the “Pro-GW1” camp because I too played the game since three months after the game’s release. The nostalgia from playing gw1 from time to time is so intense, because that game had so many positive memories for me while in gw2 I went into this game having some expectations that they did not live up to due to the changes. I kinda wish we had a “veterans salute” thread where all the people who say they are done over time could have posted and we said goodbye to them. The gw2 experience is admittingly improving but it’s not up to the quality that I recall from my experiences with the first game. The lore dumps via text, the feelings of elation after beating certain notorious missions and that feeling of camaraderie, countless hours build/theorycrafting….GW2 has it’s own fine moments (world exploration, racial diversity between the 5 races, etc) but I am sure myself and many others would have had a stronger devotion to gw2 if they it stuck closer to gw1. I also understand that making the game this way made far more profit, and money rules everything, but having a product that could have satisfied a different audience, the gw1 audience, would have been spectacular.

It must have been really challenging for the devs to bridge GW1 to GW2, because they used a timespan of around 200 years. A lot changes between that time. Let’s take our own history into account, and go back 200+ years. A lot has changed since then. Just look at our technological and societal progress. It would’ve been easier for them to just continue the stories of GW1 and it’s lore instead of having such a huge gap of time.

I don’t think the changes being spoken about are the lore/story changes as much as the changes to mechanics.

In Guild Wars 1 each profession had 150 skills to choose from, skills weren’t linked to armor and you could have a second profession which meant you had at least 300 skills from which to make your build. You didn’t even have to take a healing or elite skill if you didn’t want to.

There’s a lot more hand-holding in the build in Guild Wars 2, since a weapon gives you five skills immediately.

Guild Wars 1 had far more build variety.

There are positives and negatives to that, but that’s a lot of what people like about playing “Build Wars” which is what some people called Guild Wars 1.

Yeah that’s REALLY constructive rubttal and adds hugely to the future of such games. If you don’t like, stop playing.

Why shouldn’t the OP be allowed to post his/her critique of the game. That’s exactly what gaming forums like this are for.

On topic I sympathize with where your coming from OP but I tend to look at it this way: Any sequel is really just an extension of lore. Period.

Realistically you can’t have the expectation of exactly the same game with new graphics. I’m on the same page when it comes to things like no GvG, lack of an expansion, etc, etc but outside that as a gamer overall I wanted something new. GW1 was done and if GW1 was THAT good this game would be dead and GW1 servers would be still be full….they are’nt.

Part of being a gamer to me is evolving with the game.

Overall I still think GW1 is vastly superior but that’s past-tense and there comes a point in time where you have to put the past behind you and move on or be left behind.

Vanilla Ices “Ice Ice Baby” was the best song ever written but that was 1989, things change, and you can’t spend to much time basing comparisons of the past as validation for critique on the new…unless you have a time machine handy or want to look like that old smelly guy in the the corner of the pub sitting by himself muttering about the “good old days…”….

Peace.

OP: Thank you for making the thread I didn’t have the courage to make myself.

This. But I still keep playing, because somewhere I still want to keep exploring more of Tyria, but Anet don’t care about the original lore, or their world. Look how they butchered Tyria.

Camp 1: GW1 players who were looking forward to a new engine to GW1 expanding in to crafting (I guess) and such, to provide a new experience with the old game. This was pretty much sold as GW2 right up until the launch when it was clear the Manifesto was ditched.

Lot of that was actually late development. Remember, that the primary reason given behind gw2 the time it was first announced was “we’d like to do soo much more things in gw1, but unfortunately we are too constrained by its engine” (and also they realized they have painted themselves into a corner with creating expectations for new campaigns they no longer could fulfill, so they needed to “reset” those expectations and start again from point zero). It was to be a mainly game engine revamp, not a completely different game. It was only later that more changes started being mentioned (the first bigger one was likely “the game areas will be mostly persistent, the number of instances will be severely cut down”).
So yes, a year or so before the beta tests, it was pretty clear that the differences would be significant, but at the beginning of the road the situation was different.

Actions, not words.

So yes, a year or so before the beta tests, it was pretty clear that the differences would be significant, but at the beginning of the road the situation was different.

Even at release, GW2 had many GW1-like elements, such as its small amount of grind, focus of horizontal progression and expansion-based monetization model. It also promised many things some GW1 veterans wanted, such as a smaller amount of skills with better balance and variety.

Two years later, the grind has grown enormously, horizontal progression has suffered from it, an expansion is nowhere to be seen, monetization is cash shop -based, and skills aren’t any more balanced or varied than they were in GW1. The remaining GW1-like features were axed in favor of LS and gear grind.

Ah I feel ya…
I came back a couple weeks ago to try the game out again. Basically the only new thing was a couple chapters of LS that I had to unlock with gems… Well, I didn’t.
Didn’t feel like spending that amount of gems/gold on something that will last me 5 minutes. The only thing I enjoyed was Glint’s lair in the recent LS, that was nice.

Tried out PvP, played for a couple days and got extremely bored with the monotonous Conquest game-mode…

Got Leaf of Kudzu 2 weeks ago as a drop. Surprised, and glad, at first. Now it’s sitting in my bank and I’m like meh, I don’t even care anymore.

Haven’t logged for a week now, prolly gonna uninstall again and check it out in a year again or so :-/

This is it, you don’t like it shame. Not going to change things.

I didn’t really have a response to this thread til I read this quoted post.

1. you don’t speak for me or any veteran.

2. I’m still here and playing the game and loving it. 7 years GW 1 and 2 years GW 2.

3. I have my own issues such a mega server, no Cantha, and no true support for RP and the stupid Zerker meta, it doesn’t mean I’ll leave over it. I just find my best way to deal with it and move on with life.

4. I got what I paid for, and this is pretty much what a wanted in a Guild Wars 2.

Yumiko Emi Ishida 80 Ele, Hikari Kyoko Ishida 80 Guard TC-NA. Active RPer of NA megaserver.

I do agree with most of the points raised by this thread.
I played GW1 from factions and i loved it, never played a game for such a long time.
GW2 started with a blast, the AI was smarter and the mechanics ware a lot more interesting, about 6 mounts after the game was released Anet decided to cater the gear grinder. Lately i feel like the game is returning to its routs the living story is built like GW1 missions where the main characters are flashed out, lore had been brought back to the game, the changed trait acquisition tent to mimic GW1 elite skill acquisition.

Edit: i have a lot of complains about the new trait system acquisition but the intention is there, and it feel for me that thy tried to minimize the simplicity.

I feel like some iron clutches that tried to strangle tge GW2 team had been removed and thy can act as thy wanted.

Guild Wars Beyond was ArenaNets way of tricking people into believing that content would continue to be created for GW1 so more people would purchase GW2.

Guild Wars 2 is good game but GW1 was something unique, something totally different.Lore there was amazing,it had that feeling like you are important, like you doing something that really matters.Lore was about legends, mature content that was something not seen in any MMO till then.
After that GW2 come and brought WOW like world, full with fantasy elements. They abandoned all those legends, they made history not important at all. They destroyed GW2 universe and created entirely different game.

Now they are trying to build up entirely new game, but they doing it wrong.
I love LS but game lacks real content,it gives you no reason to login and play game cause there is no character progression and you dont feel reworded at all.Every event you do in this game rewords you with useless junk that you dont need.
So whats the point of playing? To have fun?You cant have fun without rewords, and there is no fun by just exploring the world or farming for useless items, sitting afk or such.

Its sad cause GW2 have HUGE potential even this days…2 years after release. There is still no game on a market that is promising as GW2.Many have tried and many have failed.People talk about GW2 killer for long time but still GW2 stand above all of them.People can say whatever they want but after WOW,GW2 is biggest game around and until Black Desert comes will stay that way.
But Anet is doing same mistake Blizzard is doing, they dont listen to community and they are ruining game.
They need to listen people feedback and then go on a mission of fixing the game and making GW2 universe the way players want, not devs. After all “customer is always right”.

it would have been nice if they would have just kept releasing expansions for guild wars. this is a decent game, but it isn’t nearly as epic as guild wars was. i played guild wars 1 more than i do 2, and still would if i had anything left to do on any of my characters

In hindsight, yes they could have made it work. GW1 was immensely popular and the expansion model (when in full swing) kept the players playing.

GW1 was fun until the release of heroes. Went downhill for me when that happened. Became a single-player game.

The thing that ruined GW1 in my opinion was the hall of monuments from the moment it was announced players played in order to fill HoM

Who should thy listen too? there are so many voices here.
Some players asked for progression Anet decided to listen and created the ascended gear, in result created a backlash that made a lot of players (including myself) to leave the game. On the other hand there are some incredibly good and level headed advices in this forum that can take the game to new highs.

I think GW2 is becoming better and closer to GW1 in some aspects, thy have a lot of work to fulfill the game potential but i think that thy are on the right path.

the problem is simple, the change is destructive.

the original guild wars has strategy and tactics in every fight, you need a appropriate skills in your bar or you’re toast.
quests are fun to do, missions are exiting and you need actual player skill to take down the enemy.
gear could be gained practically from the start, nothing is level restricted beside the obvious (like hard mode is exclusive for max level).

guild wars 2 however is nothing more then a spam fest, all you do is spam skills and kill enemies as fast as possible as if it’s your job.
grind is ridicules high, instead of fun quests we have boring renown hearts, dynamic events are not even dynamic but static.
there are no missions, the story is bland and to top it all, gear grind is the most important meta in this game.

they wanted to take a different stand, all they did was show how not to design a game.
it’s at least good for something, as a hobby game designer i now know the mistakes i have to avoid like the plague.

Guild Wars 2 is the Diablo 3 of the Guild Wars franchise.
Aren’t you thankful?
