uhh…ok? I first said I’m happy with this added change of JUST getting a character slot? Okay? HAPPY. I do not care if a new player gets the previous stuff for free. I DON’T. They can have it!

Thankfully this will likely be the last new class added to the game, so that shouldn’t be a problem! It will be a shame though if we go back to two parties buying the same thing and getting different things again though. Hopefully they learn from this and avoid a drama fest like this next time.

The only valid complaint was the changing of the FAQ making it look like they were trying to rip off customers, but they have now addressed that.

Crybabies win? This just doesn’t just benefit those who wanted the char slot added but even those who were fine with pre purchasing basic edition.

So it’s not just a win win for those of us who rightly questioned this but even those who didn’t will get an extra char slot to boot.

Now they will never grow up to be reasonable adults and will continue throwing tantrums to get everything they think they deserve.

Congratz!

If ANet did not deem the issues brought up as valid then they would not have done this. Specifically as it relates to the sale of gw2 these past couple of months, when you have a sale then turn around and provide it with the expansion it looks shady. If I had just started the game last month, bought it for 10-20 or whatever it was and then see they are selling the expansion with the core game that I JUST BOUGHT, I’d be kittened.

This is exactly what happened. I bought another account for my wife during this time and it did kind of rub me the wrong way that the expansion included the game I just paid for. The people in this situation would have had to spend 60-70 just because they bought it a month earlier.

Thats what I’m thinking,

Guess I will send in a ticket and wait the 1-2 week turn around for a response.

I bought one of the pre-orders that had a slot because I wanted the character slot and figured I might as well get other stuff… Now that the char slot is free, makes me feel a little different about the value of the pre-order.

Giving me 2 character slots because of this change doesn’t actually help… I only want 1, maybe give people that pre-ordered the other version the gem value of a char slot? That way if they want it they can buy the second if not, keep the gems and get something else.

But I don’t need another char slot, just one for the new class. The extra bling on the ultimate is worthless, the gems and one slot was the primary reason why I spent extra. Now I get one extra useless slot I won’t be using. Basic is now the best deal by far, the other versions are a ripoff that I happened to pay for….eh.

People can complain about basic and get it changed yet the moment I question the worth of delux/ultimate after this…I get attacked with hostile replies. I don’t need that extra slot, just give me 800 gems extra and let me decide what to use them on. Is that not a reasonable request?

While its a welcome change, the only issue they haven’t changed is the one that really irks me.

Every time an expansion for guild wars 2 comes out, existing players will be forced to re-buy every previous title to obtain the new one. This is extremely dubious ground for me. Free to play mmos aren’t that special anymore, large content updates on free mmos aren’t that uncommon either. The massive price tag for Anet’s self admitted small zone is precarious at best.

Is $50 for every undersized zone addition a fair deal? As I can afford it, I’ll say yes. If every consecutive expansion costs $5 or $10 more then the last (for the all inclusive base bundle) I’d say not – and this wont be discernible till the next expansion.

Given this extremely exorbitant sales model, one better hope there are 3 years of living story between each expansion – because if they released one of these small sized expansions every year (with a 4 month content drought before each release) you’d be better off with a different subscription model – on a different mmo.

Anet’s current offering? I’ll buy into it. But seeing as they marketed this expansion as a small zone with large underlying system reworks, I’ll expect future expansions without the large underlying system reworks to have a larger zone. If they continue to flout small zones (with the as of yet unexplained “replay-ability” factor) I’ll move onto the virtual reality mmos which will have undoubtedly been developed by then.

I’m more happy that they gave the people a refund who recently purchased the core game in anticipation of HoT. Even though that didn’t affect me personally, they had a very legitimate complaint and I can understand how frustrating that would be to feel like the victim of a bait-and-switch scheme.

The bonus character slot also works out nicely for me, even though I was already happy with the purchase package.

You aren’t rebuying, its given as a bonus.

So it comes down to this: “Do I want to pluck down $50 (for minimum) now and play, or take a break for a few years and pluck down $50 for the next xpac, and get this current one for free?” Basically anet is leaving the door open to “leaving for awhile? Come back next expansion and get previous stuff for free!”

which you know what? Is fine. Gives more power to you and saves you money. How many of those 3 mill people blizz loss from the WoD expansion probably had to buy the previous expansion(s) just to try WoD and got burned? So i’m ok with this model. If an xpac is doing stuff I hate, I can skip it without real consequence to myself. Come back next xpac and get previous at no charge.

@Pickles: I agree with the logic of your second paragraph about paying $50 to play now or $50 to play later. Quick word on paragraph 3 and the short paragraph 1.

Blizz usually bundles all the prior expansions and the base game into 1 box and the latest expansion into another – so its always a matter of buying the base game and the latest expansion. Always 2 purchases. Not completely different from what you’ve said, but i find the slight difference important to mention when arguing.

For the line “You aren’t rebuying, its given as a bonus.”, this is also true, but it has the exact same meaning as what I said ^^. If everyone but you were given a standing offer to buy a game at 50% off, that has the exact same meaning as stating that you alone will be charged 200% of the price for said game.

There is nit-picking to be had regardless of which side of the argument one chooses to support, that said I personally believe that one would be rebuying the entire game with every expansion – and the argument of worth would come down to debates of no-subscription, living story episodes per time frame and limited time contents/rewards garnered during the prime period of each expansion.
