Excuse the gibberish, it’s quite difficult to get item codes for new stuff that isn’t a mess like this.

It’s probably a very low end infusion since we know they can be increased to go with the infinitely scaling dungeon.

Guild Wars was always about playing a few hours/days till you have the maximum level and itemes and than you could explore all the content and be everywhere welcome.

In Guild Wars 2 you will now have to grind mindless for hunders of hours to improve your gear and than you have to do it all over again to improve your gear again, because else your items will be lower than everybody else and no one wants to play with you.

If that’s the stat gap between Exotics and Ascended, can you imagine the gap once they add more Legendary items?

Because:

1) None of those tiers except Exotic has ever been positioned as 100% of maximum power. If the game had launched with only White, Fine, Masterwork, and Rare, and ArenaNet was just now introducing Exotic equipment, I would have exactly the same reaction.

2) The functionality of Exotic gear is relatively easily obtained. I could stand to see it lowered, but 1.5-3g per piece for a cheap (ie: crafted) Exotic piece of equipment is easy enough to obtain that I can grit my teeth and push through the grind.

In comparison, Ascended equipment 1) Is being introduced after Exotics are already established as the top tier of equipment, meaning that the introduction of Ascended equipment is a functional downgrade to every piece of existing equipment in the game. If Exotics are now 100% of max power, they’ll be 90% once Ascended is in the game; if Rares are now 90% of max power, they’ll be only 80% once Ascended is introduced, and so on. And 2) The amount of grind to get one piece of Ascended equipment, from all the information we’ve been given so far, is, at the absolute minimum, on par with the amount of grind needed to get an entire, full set of dungeon equipment. That’s more of a grind than I would ever put up with for a non-cosmetic upgrade in a game.

So based on what you are saying, you care about what stats are on your gear, and given that the only place that has ANY relevance what so ever is in WvW I can conclude that you are primarily a WvW player.

Welp, I didn’t see you on the forums complaining about people having exotic gear while you only had rare gear, and based on what you said it’s because exotics were the top tier of gear already present in the game, the problem with not complaining about the rare/exotic difference is that as soon as ascended gear enters the game it will be the EXACT same scenario as rare/exotic and again, the only place that that had a difference was WvW, but due to the nature of WvW never being able to be balanced (even remotely) it’s a non-issue.

So as far as I can tell, you are complaining about ANet adding gear to the game that has better stats than exotics but the only way (at present) to get it is through doing some content… well how about that, you have to play the game to get stuff for the game? Just like the monthly achievement it’s completely optional, and just like the monthly achievement if you want the reward you’ll do the content regardless of what it is.

Lastly, the only element of the game this affects is WvW and if you want to have the best gear in WvW (because you have the mentality that stats mean everything right?) then you will go get the best gear regardless of what it takes, if WvW isn’t what you primarily do then… there’s actually nothing to complain about because it doesn’t affect your experience in the game in ANY way, shape or form.

As a WvW player….

I had a set of exotic gear about one hour after hitting 80.

I highly doubt I’ll have a ascended gear in one hour.

Exotics are not only acquired easily, butntheybare obtained by multiple paths. Right now, ascended gear is a DUNGEON ONLY gear that offers stat increases compared to exotics. That means now the top tier for WvW requires me to grind a dungeon.

That, at least for me, is what I’m most peeved about.

Edit. Oh and for those telling us not to speculate about the future….keep in mind we don’t know what infusions for armor will be like. Of is quite possible they will have set bonuses plus stat increases…we don’t know. Upgrade components for jewelry and armor is different,…so infusions for each may end up being different.

Also, people are talking about how the items we are complaining about have a little bit of each stat, and so is not specific. Just like there are currently items like that (divinity runes), what makes you think there aren’t corresponding infusions that have more specific upgrades?

No you misunderstood my point.

Right now the only ascended items are rings. So these infusions are upgrade components for jewelry. If we base infusions on upgrade components already in place (I know I’m speculating, but for you to say this isn’t true you are also speculating), infusions for ARMOR will be different from infusions for rings. For exotics, upgrade components only provide stat bonuses. For Armor, upgrade components (runes) can apply set bonuses as well.

When they add ascended ARMOR, it is quite possible (and it would be in keeping with their current system) to have ARMOR infusions which are unique from jewelry infusions (which are the only infusions in game RIGHT NOW since only ascended jewelry exists). It is then quite possible that those ARMOR infusions will have set bonuses. We don’t actually know, since ascended armor (and therefore armor infusions) aren’t in game yet. However, based on the current system in the game for exotics, it isn’t that far a stretch to think that armor infusions will be UNIQUE from jewelry infusions, and may provide other bonuses.

Even if they are just stat bonuses…bottom line this is a STATISTICAL ADVANTAGE for all areas of the game that is ONLY available in one area. So people who grind dungeons have a STATISTICAL ADVANTAGE in WvW, even though dungeons have nothing to do with WvW. Yes I know they plan on adding ascended gear to WvW, but we have absolutely no timeline (and no real clear indication of what kind of priority that is…from the sound of it, it’s low priority…it’s a “we’ll get to it”).

Furthermore…the jump from rare —> Exotic is NOTHING like the jump from exotic —> ascended since exotics can be A. Acquired in ~ 4 or 5 different ways B. Can be acquired in mere hours while Ascended gear A. Can ONLY be acquired in dungeons and B. Require a large grind per piece

A grind would be okay if it provided NO STATISTICAL ADVANTAGE (IE: Like legendaries). But now they are creating grinds for stats…and that is a dangerous road to be heading down.

No no, I know what the whole debacle is with increasing the stats on ascended gear. But looking at the pic the OP posted, where does it show that the stat increase is going to be more than a few ? Everyone in this thread was able to determine from looking at it that its going to be a larger than expected jump(I guess expected was 8, people are saying its more like 14% or something?

If only….if it was dungeon only I would have ABSOLUTELY ZERO 100% NO PROBLEM with any of it. I don’t play dungeons, I never have and I never will. I don’t care if dungeon runners want to grind for gear all day. I just don’t want it affecting MY gameplay (WvW). Just like I wouldn’t expect playing WvW all day to give me an advantage in dungeons (that would clearly be unfair right? It should go both ways).

I dont know why people are getting bent out of shape over this ring, it’s not even that good…unless you want all stats?! Berserker is higher dps stats.

This.

People are calculating allocated stat totals without taking into consideration if those stats are actually relevant simultaneously.

A couple of points:

A) Most players use specialised builds that favour a small number of stats. This means that the current ascended gear we’ve seen is NOT ideal for their builds.

B) Runes/sigils are baked into the equipment which means we have NO way to customise those stats. Again this makes the old exotics potentially better.

C) Ascended gear means we lose rune set bonuses. There are a number of builds that are entirely built around these set bonuses which will not work with ascended gear.

The ascended items seem to have a higher allocation of stat points at a rather hefty cost of customisation and specialisation. I still think people should wait and see.

A) There is a list of ascended gear out already that covers a wide variety of stat combos: http://www.gw2db.com/items?filter-item-rarity=8. I’d imagine they’re going to add even more to that.

B) Since when have you ever overwritten something like a divinity rune in your exo armor? I’ve yet to hear of a person doing that, just to ‘swap builds’. Most players have several exotic sets, all of which will now be nulled, obsolete, a wasted effort. Most of us do not want to worry about getting the next best set of gear, we just want to enjoy content and PvP. We don’t want to come back 3 months later and be forced to tediously grind more gear just to be able to be viable again.

C) AScended trinkets/weapons have no rune/set bonus. Even if your point stays valid, we are still looking at up to 40%+ stat increase just from trinkets/weapons. And guess what is getting released 1st? Trinkets and weapons…..

So, after the Ascended set and Insfusions are rolled out in their entirety (since they are coming piece-meal so we can get them as they come instead of being overwhelmed by grinding for everything at once)…where is the vertical progression?

Legendaries will share stats. It’s been said over and over this is to fill in a gap and accommodate a mechanic and new tiers won’t be added. To have progression you would have to keep going. To have a treadmill there has to be another tier, then another.

Soo….everyone is just being paranoid and blowing smoke out their kittens basically?

Also, worth noting the feelings of the player base at large do not reflect the feelings of forum users. It may be anecdotal, but in /m on my server yesterday everyone was pretty excited for the changes and outright mocking the people on the forums that have been throwing hissy fits.

So things like — “Lots of us are quitting over this and I doubt this change is going to help the game that much, because many of the people it appeals to also like things like raids, specfic roles, addons, etc.” -- are pretty hyperbolic and probably why noise in game is taken more seriously than on the forums.

Exaggerations and empty threats of quitting (yesterday I again checked a handful of people that “quit over this and were never coming back”) and nine out of ten were online and playing at some point between 7pm-3am EST) pretty much invalidate any arguments and opinions you could have because it shows you’re clearly unreasonable.

One new tier does not vertical progression, or a treadmill, make.

Infusions are going to keep getting increased. This was stated in a dev post. So instead of replacing armor, you’ll just keep replacing your infusion with better stat versions.

Nowhere did they say Ascended was the top tier of items (and therefore Legendary items would always be Ascended stats).

In the “German Post” mentioned elsewhere, when directly asked if Ascended was going to stay top tier, the ANet employee refused to say that Ascended was the last tier and that no further tiers were coming.

And Ascended are not the last tier for armor in the way they are not the last tier for weapons. There will be legendary armor. But just like Legendary weapons mirror Ascended stats, the Legendary Armor is expected to also.

So other than wildly pessimistic speculation and pure paranoia, there is still no good reason to stay or jump on that vertical progression/treadmill bandwagon.

There is actually a very easy way for them to fix all of this so people cannot really complain. Change WvW to be linked to sPvP for gearing and things and just separate pve from every part of the pvp game.

As long as your pve gear grinders can go into WvW with an advantage there will be an issue.

I would spend more time in WvW if this were the case. I would also make finding PvP gear appearance items a priority over PvE skins.

All that means is that people should start keeping an eye out at the 4-month mark.

That’s slightly hyperbolic and by no means am I literally expecting to see another tier the second the three month ‘guarantee’ is past, but really, 6 months? 9 months? It wouldn’t shock me at all.
And the reason it wouldn’t shock me at all is that this change is totally incoherent as a design decision unless the game’s new MO is to start releasing new equipment tiers on a semi-regular basis.

Yes, he did say that. I can say “I won’t have a birthday every 3 months” and it is obviously a true statement. It does not mean I will never have another birthday.

Plus, people are spouting anger because they feel lied to due to the perceived change in game direction … I doubt those upset are going to easily believe ANet promises again.

As Ike Turner said, “Don’t worry baby … it won’t happen again.”

The big equipment sites are already posting the new gear; GW2DB, et al. The infused items are shown as well. Better rarity = better stats … just like everywhere else in the game.

I respectfully disagree. Infusions add to stats = true. Infusions will increase in power = true. That to me spells vertical progression/treadmill.

Given the number of posts I am seeing with “Anet said this!” , “Anet said that!”, and “Anet LIED!!”, it is no wonder that the Anet employee refused to say anything.

Oh I don’t blame them either. Companies today take PR very seriously, and an employee saying something stupid is a major blow.

The gear isn’t even out yet. You don’t know how easy/hard anything will be to get.

The gear is on “the websites”, as are the screenshots from the merchant selling a lot of the gear. Granted it isn’t unlocked in game yet so things could have changed in a few hours since the postings/reviews but I’m very doubtful it’ll be easy to get. What good is vertical progression and a tier over exotics (but under Legendary) if you can get it as fast as Exotics? They want to slooooow everyone down with this step.

You don’t know if it will be a full gear set (Armour/weapons/accessories) or just a few items. You only know what you have read from the few posts by Anet and the myriad of posts by everyone else.

It will be a ring item, and a back item, plus infusions. The rest of the set will be added in future patches. As for “a few posts by Anet” … I accept Anet posts about the content to be .. well .. posts about the content. They said ring & back + rest of set to come, that is what I believe.

Their latest saying of “not a new tier every three months” reminds me of when they said Sorrow’s Furnace would be coming out for GW1 during Summer, all the way up to and through Summer. They released it a day or so before Summer Technically ended.

They’ll be able to release a new tier every 2.9 months or 1.7 months or anything else and not be telling lies.

You have to be careful with the way companies twist their words, you could end up with somebody saying something like “no news on [insert feature here]” for a whole year when they’ve cancelled it within the first month. Something I’m sure a.net would never do.

It amazes me that I would actually need to explain this at all. People really need to stay in school, but ok, whatever.

If two people of the same class are of equivilent skill and one of them has better gear than the other, the one with the better gear will win the majority of the fights.

this is not some type of opinionated guessing game, its a mathematical fact.

they may not win 100% of the fights, but they will average more than 50%. the match will always be skewed in their favor. Of course there will always be other factors involved that will allow the lesser geared player to win some of the matches, but it does not change the fact that the odds are stacked in the favor of the better geared player.

how can people honestly even argue this? its like arguing that 1+1 does not really equal 2.

There’s this weird notion in video games among people who argue against balance that, if a bad player with favourable stats can ever lose to a good player with less favourable stats, then that automatically means that every fight between two players will be a bad player versus a good one, and that the good one will win every time, and therefore imbalances don’t matter.

I’ve never managed to unravel the logic behind it, myself.

I don’t get it. I quit playing this after a month when I 100%’ed the world and realized there was nothing left in this game for me to do. My entire guild and network of friends all are planning on logging on for the first time in months.

The reason I went to the forums at all was to write a snide post with the topic “Did it really take that long to realize people want progression in an mmo?” but I guess responding here will do.

Good job for someone with a clue finaly waking the devs up, let’s hope it’s not too late.

edit: after reading a few more posts in this topic. It’s a matter of who you think own this game. If it’s only the pvp crowd then there’s no need for change. Obviously this emergency update is the result of a huge chunk of the players NOT being satisfied with only what’s offered on the pvp side. I thought that was obvious myself but no need to argue that now when we now for sure.

It’s like taking 200 damage when you have only 165 HP instead of 150. It doesn’t make a difference.

They might not be breaking their manifesto if they do this right. That is because it is possible numbers will be so miniscule that it makes no difference in level 80 combat.

In which case. what was the point of the increase?

When they launch their next major update or expansion the +30 will grow to +60, then the next one will grow to +120, and continue to grow to satisfy the demands of those wanting the gear progression.

There is no “doing right” by the manifesto as long as vertical progression is in, as the tenant of the manifesto is in direct conflict with it.

I’m greatly disjointed in how most of you forum gamers are behaving. Yeah sure the new armor rank has its ups and downs but why are ya’ll acting like it’s the end of the world? So what the stats are better, but not enough to make exotic obsolete.

It is not the end of the world, of course. For some it is the end of playing this game what is much much less than the end of the world. And because of that it happens more often (I would be very surprised if the world would end more than once).

Exotic is in the same way not obsolete as rare level 80 gear wasn’t obsolete before this patch. It is still good for ectos and mystic forging.

I pre purchased this game based on what anet said was they code they operated by.
They changed that code and included things that were explicitly derided in the previous code. Without any hesitation or warning whatsoever. That is the point here.

It was done in bad faith and a waste of time for me. Others love it that is fine. But the game wasnt advertised and delivered with what came in the patch.Nor was it meant to be according to all the press. What changed? Dont know dont care.

There is a huge difference in gear between exotic and ascended and that imbalances not only pve but wvw as well. But at least the best consumers are happy and that is what this is designed for.

It isnt the end of the world but an end of an era for me where I trust nothing from a company and will now wait and see how a product fairs before I support it.

They gap between Exotic and legendary was an effort gap.

Ascended gear was intended to fill that gap.

However, by adding better stats to ascended gear they successfully created ANOTHER gap to take the original gaps place.

GG Arenanet on becoming EA; fix one problem, create another even worse problem.

There wasn’t even an effort gap! They put Ascended items in for no reason except to cater to people who can’t live without higher numbers.

Fact is if you’ve been watching feedback here and on other gaming sites, there were a lot of people who felt like there’s not much to do in GW2, no endgame, boring after you hit 80, “i don’t want legendary and got full exotics right after I got 80, so I quit logging in” and over and over, the flames about no endgame.

So… here’s some endgame. With fractal, so no matter how you do it, it never ends. Smoke em if you got em, we’ll be here a while.

Well, a lot of people didn’t play Guild Wars, didn’t read ArenaNet’s design philosophy, and then bought a game they wouldn’t like and have tried to change it.

I don’t go buy a Clancy novel and expect a romance novel.

Excuse the gibberish, it’s quite difficult to get item codes for new stuff that isn’t a mess like this.

http://i.imgur.com/MV1Vt.png

It’s probably a very low end infusion since we know they can be increased to go with the infinitely scaling dungeon.

Here’s the code in full, in case anybody feels like arguing about it being fake : [&AgEJkQAwDZWd0+4GAADzMS7fZRcAAA==]

Could someone explain why this is bad? I see a screenshot with a bunch of characters… not sure why this equates to being bad?

(not trolling, I just dont understand this)

No one will have the time it grind ascended items for their alts.

Infusions should be on exotics with no increase in stats outside of dungeons and maybe some future content.

Even if that was the case, you would still have to work to get back to being done with your gear progression every time they release a new infusion tier. The long term gear grind is in the infusions, which can be added at will and are much easier to create for them than full armor sets.

If they stuck to their manifesto, ascended gear wouldn’t exist, infusions wouldn’t have anything past agony related stats, and can be fairly easily acquired via the dungeon’s story mode. 1 story mode run = 1 infusion

But then there would be no long term gear “progression”.

I hope some of you will read this. I just want to say that I feel like all of ArenaNet is getting a lot of abuse for this, some of which I’ve been guilty of myself. I really want to say that I feel for the developers, though. As I honestly don’t believe this gear treadmill crap was something they had any say in.

Just watched Jonathan Sharp’s video where he introduces the “Temple of the Silent Storm” map. This game is their baby. They’ve spent years creating it. They’re so passionate about it and now NCSoft is turning round and reaming it on the advice of some economic guys that – like every other failed MMO theorists – think that becoming a WoW clone will allow them to share the piggy bank. Really feel for those guys, and don’t think it’s fair to give them crap for this BS.

I hope the next time another gear level they don’t beat around the bush and just jump the stats another 100 each stat instead, like wow did with wotlk to cataclysm. Maybe then with the bigger numbers will let some of the blind people finally see what’s going on here.

Congrats to the vertical progression people from wow, and all the dungeon slaves out there, you got what you wanted, enjoy it, but please don’t come back in a month to complain when the elitism starts kicking in, or you’re “bored”. Now if you’ll excuse me, another yawn week of wvw just started I need to make some more popcorn for this slow mmo train wreck in progress.

Another derailing post. ^^

I would have more sympathy for them if they had communicated with the user base rather than try to sneak it in with a pretty big content patch. They knew this was going to be a highly flammable issue yet they chose to hide behind a couple of PR spins. To date, there has been extremely little details on what their new plan is (unless you’re german).

Can’t take the heat from your user base? Then expect them to be even more riled up.

Even if ascended gear gives some statistical advantage, do they offer the same utility bonuses as rune sets?
We still don’t know if ascended gear will have infusions allowing you to have the same utility bonuses as lets say the soldier rune set.
Will ascended gear permit you to remove 1 condition each time you use a shout if we can’t prove that we can insert runes in ascended armor yet ?

I think we honestly look too much at the stats and not at the other bonuses out there.

Are you sure this new gear can be used outside of the dungeon? Maybe it should be dungeon use only.

I would love this. One caveat would be that they should be kept to specific dungeons. Basically I’m saying that there should be “normal” dungeons and “ascended” dungeons where you can use your ascended gear.

I wanted to make a few points, for the sake of clarity, and so that if we choose to engage in dialogue about this issue, we are all at least on board. Too many people are spreading ignorance, or worse yet trying to mislead.

1. Ascended gear is going to be strictly better than exotic gear. Please leave whatever denial of this fact at the door. Low estimates (credible ones) put this value at around +14% extra stats. (Possibly… and likely, more than this figure. It is the minimum.)

2. Ascended gear has Infusions slots, and infusions add even more stats. Fine (blue) infusions have +5 stats each, higher quality ones will likely have far more. Increasing the disparity between exotic and ascended further.

3. Ascended gear will be released periodically in piecemeal. While this is only one new tier of gear, and no word if there will be more later… the fact it is being released piecemeal over time is by definition a gear treadmill already. Saying otherwise is just misdirection, word trickery, or outright deceit.

4. Legendary weapons will be upgraded to ascended tier quality. If this remotely follows the established trend of quality for l80 weapon in game, this will net ~ 10% extra damage minimum… by itself. And not the kind of 10% extra that gets added to all your other % bonuses additively and really only increases your damage by 3%… I mean 10% more than what you would do with an equivalent exotic weapon. 1 item, huge advantage.

5. Before this update, Anet’s stance was very clearly, without a doubt to be anti-treadmill. The number of quotes and statements and interviews available regarding this philosophy is startling. Anet has just made a complete reversal of previous stated philosophy. Good/bad? Whatever… fact.

Now. Go ahead and discuss whatever you like about that. In favor of it? Against it? What does it mean for the future? Do you still have the faith? Whatever. But get the basics of the issue straight before getting all mouthy about it. Otherwise you just fill up white space with black symbols full of meaninglessness.

Why grind dungeons? Only relevant content…
Why? Gives needed gear…
Why do you need this gear? To do dungeons… duh.

It’s highly unlikely you will actually get a refund. Good luck though, if we could hit them where it counts (the wallet) maybe they’d actually have to listen to us.

I would have more sympathy for them if they had communicated with the user base rather than try to sneak it in with a pretty big content patch. They have absolutely no reason to communicate with the user base. Acknowledging there is a problem would be bad PR, this way they can pretend everything is fine. After all, only a small percent of users even read the forum in the first place.

They are going to bunker down and wait for it to blow over and then pretend this was the plan all along – and the saddest part is it will probably work. Some people will quit, but who cares? they already have your money and unless you spend a lot in the gem store (let’s be honest, you might, but most players spend little or nothing) then you quitting is probably a good thing for them due to reduced server load.

I agree, but the solution is not to stay quiet and let things go on as-is either. To what degree all of this dissent will influence any decision making is hard to predict, but try we must.

One of my biggest problems with capitalism is that the more tiers accrue in the decision-making hierarchy as successful companies get bigger and bigger, the more out-of-touch with even their own market the people at the top become, and the more incompetent tyranny they wield against the people who actually care about the product (both developers and users). They very frequently make myopic decisions for short term profits based on knee-jerks.

Newsflash, it should be obvious to anyone with half a brain. You are not going to beat WoW at their own game, even if that game is dated as hell. The only way to be successful is to set yourself apart.

It’s just so funny. Diablo 3 started off bad and got increasingly better after patches, this one just went from hero to zero with just one major content patch after release.

Between the gear treadmill, bugs, stupid one-time events and the piss poor technical design of fractals, I’m out. GW2 was a $60 well spent, but not a single cent more when it could have got more from me.
