Just loging into a game to get rewards is casual play in my book.

Then you should have over 1,000 Laurels by now if you didn’t spend any. The system is working as intended.

I can’t agree more that the system is working as intended, for casual players yes.

I’m sitting here just waiting for replies because i have nothing more to do at the moment. I’m craving to get into the game and farm those amazing events and world bosses but I have too much of the farmable materials… I just need those laurels but I can’t progress because of the time gates! Please Anet let play your game! I want to swing my sword, play RP and slay those Alien-looking plants in silverwaste but you guys don’t let me progress! :’(

TAKE MY MONEY

Well, no. From what you’re saying you have a self-imposed ‘gate.’ You seem unwilling to go and do anything until you get the ascended gear you want. There’s really nothing stopping you from doing any of the things you want.

Tell me another progression i can devour then.

Here’s a checklist for you:

[ ] Reached 10k achievement points
[ ] Reached rank 500 in WvW
[ ] Reached rank 80 in sPvP
[ ] Reached 100% world completion
[ ] Crafted a legendary weapon
[ ] Maximized all crafting disciplines to 400/500
[ ] Finished all jumping puzzles
[ ] Finished all Living Story Season 2 achievements
[ ] Crafted Mawdrey
[ ] Finished the Luminescent Armor collection
[ ] Finished all Tequatl Achievements
[ ] Finished all Triple Trouble Achievements
[ ] Finished the Dive Master Achievement

Come back when that’s done and I’ll make you another list.

I’m done.

Yeah but this list wasn’t for you. I bet you have a bit more hours in the clock than the OP.

This is not progression since it dosent make your character stronger. But i just thought i could lvl up at least 1 character of every profession lvl 80 full exotic (since i cannot get ascended at the moment). Thats progression, im happy now.

The WvW ranks do make your character stronger. You deal more damage to guards and mercenaries. You deal more damage with specific siege. Take less damage from siege and NPC’s.

I know. Thats why like 90% of the mats i farmed comes from eotm and im already lvl like 75. But when i tried the silverwaste i completely overflowed my bags with mats and im sad i cannot craft anything good with it. Which is shameful in my opinion.

You’re right that Silverwastes went totally overboard in the abundance of Ascended crafting materials. Before it, the Vision Crystals were for me the most time-consuming part of the ascended crafting. Now they’re just trivial to get so the gating moves to something else, in your case, laurels.

And one of Tom’s suggestions was get your rank up to 500. If you seriously want to play WvW that is probably more important than having ascended.

Good point. I will level up my characters in WvW while getting ranks, mats and badges for exotic gear which is also a joke to get now. and sooner or later i will get laurels…

Having a few time gated items is a good thing, as it forces players who would otherwise be done in 2-3 days to log in and play for 2-3 months instead.

There is no problem with the current time gates, as they do not impact anything that must be accomplished quickly in order to enjoy the game.

I think ArenaNet found a very good balance of time-gated versus non-time-gated currencies.

There are actually some ascended stat combos, whose recipes only come from drops and not the laurel merchant. Those are tradeable on the tp as well, so you could potentially farm the recipes or gold to buy them every day. That would negate the laurel gate.

If you’re gonna complain about Laurels being time-gated, then you need to complain about

  • Only being able to do dailies once a day,
  • Pristine Fractal Relics,
  • Dungeon completion rewards,
  • World boss rewards,
  • Jump puzzle rewards,
  • Open world chest rewards, and
  • Diminishing returns mechanics.

The game isn’t meant to be farmable. The game isn’t designed to allow you to continuously grind anything, no matter how dedicated of a player you consider yourself to be. Things take time by design.

I agree but the only reward I can see that help progression within these event are, of course, ascended materials which can can be farmed without limits elsewhere. So yes there is time gates on those events but they are not concerning.

When you say: “Things take time by design”. Again I cannot agree more. But i cannot understand why since, like I said, there is no monthly subscription fee so Anet have no profitable advantage doing so. Some may say that if they remove all time gates it will change the targeted audience but why can’t they target both casual and less-casual audience at the same time? Why would a normal casual player be offended to see a dedicated player that play the game way more than him and have better gear and more achievements? Maybe it would encourage him to play more who knows? Someone said earlier that “If you want it, you gotta earn it” but right now it’s more “If you want it, you better be ready to wait”.

I hate to make comparison with other MMO but when you look at WOW’s design, you quickly realize that everything is made to make you lose a large portion of your time:
-The weekly raid saves.
-The quests back tracking
-Death respawning penalties
-No ergonomic teleportation like in gw2
-Not instant services like mail, race/realm changes…
-several hours of maintenance every Tuesday for no reason at all.
-and many many more

But for them, like i said many times, they have reasons to do that since we mostly live in a capitalist world and i would probably do the same if i was Blizzard’s CEO. But for GW2… its literally a different game and time gates have, in my opinion, absolutely no reason to be.

With the recent change to the daily, you get more laurels now. It used to be a maximum of 40 every 30 day, one a day then 10 from the monthly. Now, it’s a maximum of 55 every 28 days and if you do the current festival daily, that’s an additional laurel a day

Old way: 1.33 laurels/day
Now: 1.96 laurels/day plus the additional daily laurel from the festival.

Hroatgar, from the start I’ve seen your problem, and the moment you mentioned WoW (which after reading your first couple of posts I was expecting you would) I was convinced.

You want your character to be stronger. You want it to be best of the best and top of the top, and have your characters in the best of the best and top of the top gear. You want to be able to flaunt that and to feel good about yourself.

Unfortunately you’re going at it the wrong way. The WoW way. Where you’re vertically progressing to better gear and better weapons (and better mounts etc etc) . GW2 is very different. There is no vertical progression. Wearing ascended is not really the best thing ever – look around you, how many people do you see wearing ascended gear? Very very very few. You know why? Because they have transmuted their gear to look different. Because the LOOKS not the stats are the shiznit in GW2. Stats? for one the ascended gear doesn’t give you that much of an advantage. Besides, you can get ascended trinkets in several ways and have them infused for the same result as wearing ascended gear.
You want to be top of the top and show it off and feel good about yourself? Do that list that was suggested to you. In GW2 it’s not just how your looks are – it’s also about your TITLE.

Besides, to be honest, as others already said it on this thread, you want it all, you want it now, and as soon as you get it you leave because you’re bored. Yea. Want some cheese with that whine?

Tbh i don’t really see the problem over here :p, ascended armor+weapon is a longer term investment aswell as the fact that you don’t need that many laurels for it.

how to get ascended trinkets:
Laurel 31 laurels in 21 days (55 in 28 days)
Fractals lets say 2 fractal tokens per day
Guild commendations 6 tokens a week

To get full asceneded trinkets you need to have:
4x guildmissions(accesory) and 21 days login (neck) and 10 days of fractal running (ring), you can even do half the amount of fractal runs if you decide to use badges of honor when making ascended trinkets. So around 3-4 weeks for a full set, That aint that bad…

Giving people instantly the best gear and looks ingame would feel very uncomfortable for any bit more veteran player. MMORPG are designed to keep making progression when you play the game, insta best in slot gear isn’t part of that filosofy.

play the game

There ya go. You say it yourself. Play the game! You can’t label yourself a dedicated player if you took such a long break and didn’t played the game. For everything there are restrictions and requirements. We don’t get all we want, when we want, the way we want. Just accept it. Laurels are on this game for a long time now and Anet even changed a bit to reward it more. If there is nothing else that holds your attention on this game, as some said, I am sorry but you should try something else. If all you want is a gear and not to play the content at all, a game with gear treadmill is more likely your thing. You won’t find it on Guild Wars 2.

I’m sorry to put it that way but that’s simply selfish to think like that.

It’s like saying that since I waited 1h in line to get something everybody that comes after me should also wait at least 1h even if the queue is gone otherwise I will feel punished…

You should take it the good way and say that since you were dedicated and gathered all those laurels before every new comers, you’ll always be a step ahead over them.

Its the same situation for me, when i started playing GW2 it was a real hard and harsh path to farm for my exotic gear. But now with WvW its a real joke to get a full set and i don’t feel sorry or punished about it. Its simply the opposite since i was able to farm more easily and get more gold than the average at that time. I’m also happy that i will be able to use the new system as well and gear up my other toons way more faster.

Ah geez this again. Old daily/monthly system gave you 1 per day plus 10 per month for a total of 485 laurels per year. New login system gives you 35 per 28 days with an optional 20 per 28 days. This averages out to between four hundred and fifty five and 715 laurels per year.

Ascended armor wasn’t put in the game for people to farm out in a few days or even a few weeks. It was always meant to be a long term goal, otherwise it would be just a slightly more expensive version of exotic. That is why you can’t straight up buy ascended gear. There is a reason why they time gated the materials and laurels, to encourage and reward people for playing constantly.

This armor was put in the game for the sole purpose of giving players a long term progression goal even if it is only around a 5% increase.

No, you do not deserve a short cut because you obtained exotic gear before ascended or feel that you shouldn’t have to “wait in line”.

Just because you took a long break and want to catch up now doesn’t entitle you to special treatment and change the game for everyone just because you feel you are behind now. Put in the same time and dedication everyone else had to.

Logging on everyday for 5 seconds doesn’t take any time at all. I don’t see how “you have to log on everyday in order to progress your character” is time and dedication. It’s 5 seconds of your life everyday.

Again, there’s no problem with the system. If you wanted Laurels, then you should consider that before quitting or taking a long break from the game. Players who play daily, even if casually, get their time-gated rewards. Players who didn’t aren’t Entitled to catching up.

You not having problems with laurels is not a reason to defend this major flaw. Try to be more altruistic on this matter. Would you be concerned to see Anet removing time gates on Laurels now to help other players because you have loged in more or less casually to get them?

I would have a problem with any currency that I was limited in acquiring and then it gets thrown at other players.

Omgosh. Now that mats are dropping like rain in SW, people now complain about laurels.

I don’t get it, I read this reply in another thread, and I entirely agree. Isn’t this a simple case of opportunity cost? Going to cite wiki here:

“The opportunity cost of a choice is the value of the best alternative forgone… Assuming the best choice is made, it is the “cost” incurred by not enjoying the benefit that would be had by taking the second best choice available."

You made your choice of not logging in, you don’t expect to be back and just magically catch up with everyone right?

This topic reminded me of a discussion almost two years ago when laurels first came out. At the time, the community was less than happy because all of the ascended jewelry would take around a little less than a year to get.

This didn’t include the mini-pets and tonics.

Fast forward to now. I guarantee all those players, who remained, have all the jewelry, the pets, tonics, and over 500 laurels in the wallet to boot.

Hroatgar, believe me, in a month, you’ll have more laurels than you know what to do with. You said it yourself: devoted.

If you left at any point, and weren’t playing the game, that’s kind of the effect of not playing. You don’t get the rewards.

Just be patient. Besides, with the expansion, the new gear will probably make the old gear obsolete. So just hold onto your laurels and materials for the time being.

Might be the wiser path to follow.

Gone to Reddit.

I don’t need more Laurels, I’d prefer more things on which to use these currencies piling up.

Karma – Even after going for 250 Obsidian Shards because I wanted to, and Temple Armor on my new 80 Warrior . . . woo . . . still swimming in the stuff.

Laurels – I do not want, nor do I need, anything out of the menu. It’s nice I can buy Season 1 Rewards though. Too bad I got most of those the first time around. Hmmm.

Badges of Honor – I’m not kidding, I don’t ever use these. Ever.

Dungeon Tokens – Meh, could use stuff in the lists which isn’t related to special armors or the Legendary gifts. Really.

Guild Commendations – I still don’t get what these really are for which is so special. Eh.

Guild commendations for me are there for ascended accessory items that is it (for me). 2 weeks give 1 item, 9 level 80s to fit gives something to do.
Rest I pretty much agree with.

Badges of Honor are terrible. Probably the most broken, useless currency in the game. Why do we even have those if we can’t use them to upgrade anything with it but use gold instead?

You are aware that you can convert (some with a lot of hassle – karma) these into gold, right?

What? There is a game mode called WvW. It’s pretty useful there I heard.

To be honest if you don’t care about buying tons of golem blueprints odds are most players are going to end up with a lot more badges than they need.

If selfish k-train zergling or EotM player then yes.

If not then:
- Use it for siege/traps
- Gift siege to people (commanders) who are actually in dire need of badges
- Just convert it to gold

Badges are very far from useless.
