This was a good call. The issues with the foundation of the game needs to be addressed before new content. This is what we have all been asking for and it is basic common sense that the core game needs to be right before anything else people…jump back and let them breathe. We can revisit legendaries later.

Probably for the best but i wonder if it would be possible to release the other legendary in the style of the original ledgends i.e without any collection just a random chance for pre through drops or mystic forge.

You should’ve just scrapped the treasure hunt tbh. Use the pre-HoT system of getting precursors as drops, then it no longer takes up so much development time and you alleviate some of the horrible grind that comes with these new legendaries. In the end people just want their shinies anyway.

Regardless of your reasons and trying to explain it to us, the fact of the matter is that HoT still is unfinished and now you’re telling us you won’t even bother for some parts.

Oh, of course, it means that instead of working toward new sources of money they actually give us things we already paid for. Obviously that’s not what they are going to do.

Unless they come out with some blogpost at the start of April like “we hired an army of chronomancers and here are all the new legendaries, also we conquered the world and we have a portal to Tyria in our offices”, well, they ruined any credibility they had left. People will have no reason to buy a new expansion after seeing how they managed the first one.

“We have an idea fo this! now this ! oh but we’ve given up on this, and that will come in 6 months”.

My god, like, since HOT (6 months now), the only content you have been releasing is raids. And raids is for a marginal part of the population (thanks to a lack of lfg, only hardcore raid guild can truly enjoy it, other wise it’s just waiting and begging the gods for people to join).

I mean no new raids, still no wvw revamp.

And now one of the new features announce in hot is abandoned?

Man i’m so frustrated I logged in to post my first ever forum comment on this game I played practically since launch.

+1 For the honesty, i’d like to see that more often. But that’s honestly not going to fix this problem. Vote with your wallet folks If they can’t take 5or 6 devs off the next xpac group (that has like 70 devs dedicated to it?!?!) to finish the half baked expansion already released, don’t buy into this smoke field about needing to focus on living story!! The legendaries are part of a ALREADY RELEASED expansion that will never be finished, how can you expect us to trust you when the next one is released?? Its crazy and unacceptable. No fractal leaderboards, no new legendaries, no legendary back pack for pve, fractals revamped for what the 4th time?? then on the AMA on reddit the dev admitted they’ll be revamped all over again because it was horribly rushed and done, still no new content for fractals in over 1 year, raids aren’t finished and have also only 6 developers on it. Just ridiculous.

Don’t take the LS hook line and sinker, there’s no good reason to do this, they could easily take 5-6 off their xpac team to speed through these legendaries.

Fair enough making this decision but I still feel that you could be a bit clearer with us, Mo.

I appreciate that creating the legendary journey for each weapon isn’t a simple case of designing a precursor and then just applying it and bang, it’s done, but from our perspective it’s taken that team from November at the latest until the Spring update to release ONE legendary weapon. Why is this the case?

Are the tools the team have available to them that complicated to use that it takes a lot of time to create the steps? Is it designing the steps themselves that takes time? If it’s the tools, will they be redesigned to make it easier for them to develop the journey quicker?

‘Suspended indefinitely’ is also a bit ambiguous. Will that team continue crating legendary weapons in the future after a certain amount of living world content has been produced? Or are we just abandoning the HoT legendaries now altogether?

Again, I appreciate the candidness, but from all we know right now, it seems odd that it took this long to release one weapon with a team dedicated to it.

Thank you for the information. This is a nice change of pace. Very much appreciated.

I do wonder how much of an impact six people reassigned back to the core content team will make? Six people that, apparently, could not produce more than four weapons over the course of more than a year, that represent a 5% increase in the size of the content team, will have how much of an impact? Even if they get up to speed instantly, a content release schedule that was at something like nine months seems unlikely to be quicker by more than a couple of weeks. In all reality a five percent increase in staff fora given team or project is unlikely to reduce production time by a full five percent. I would be surprised to see more than a two percent yield.

Are you really cancelling an element upon which the expansion was sold in order to cut something like 6 days off of a nine month release schedule?

It’s not surprising this happen. However I am surprised it took this long to admit to this problem. The legendary journey and fractal leader-boards have been in development since 2013. They canceled fractal leaderboards about a month ago. The poor state of how copy and pasted the legendary journey is unbelievable. With a pure lack of imagination when it first came out. Sure the scavenger hunt portions are somewhat interesting. However ever since they introduced ascended gear it like they been circling their wagons, and using archaic backwards thinking MMO dogma to keep people in game. That has to stop now. If you are willing to bring up that joke of a manifesto from 2010 Mike. Then I suggest you start being forward thinkers of the MMO industry like you advertised you would be.

Here is another idea: The next time you tell us you want to release an expansion by it’s deadline and it’s not finished. Delay it. Simple. Don’t rush it out the door like you admitted with both core GW2 and HoT. Stop treating your game like it’s some early access game on steam.

By the way I will give Mike this: At least he is being honest. The unfortunate thing about Colin is that he was skirting us around with “nothing is off the table” PR talking point. It’s better to have this type of transparency and dead on information about content in development I’m tried of being left in the dark for so many years on these problems. Only to find out 2-4 years latter it’s been canned for now.

This is only going to damage your reputation for the future. You want people to pre-order the next xpac? Treat us with some respect and deliver what was promised.

I’d even go as far as putting the next xpac on halt and just moving all 70 of them onto other teams to fix this massive mess. Lol j/k $$$$$$$$$$

I disagree. All of this mess came about because of lack of communication between the player base and the game godz. This is not the first time a game went off track because of bad calls made in the boardroom that forgot what group actually pays the bills.

Take it as a positive sign that things are changing.

Also I get why a community turns rabid over a lack of communication + game changes. I’ve lived this before. However its time to pull back so this bridge between the community and Anet can mend.

Kinda have to agree with this. My assumption is that they’re gonna drop it entirely. I highly doubt it’s the skins itself that caused the issue, especially if you look at the amount of black lion skins they can produce. So then the question is, why not add the precursors as drops and revisit the treasure hunt later? Probably because there is no “later”.

I feel this is another sad day for this game.
You promise as a full 2nd set of legendaries, advertise with them to bait people who love legendaries into buying the xpack..and now you don’t deliver…after you have taken their money.
I have no words for this that would actually get through the “kitten” filter.

No legendaries, yet you manage to release Black Lion Skins and Gliders almost weekly.
It’s clear that these generate easy cash, and that cash is becoming more and more important to ArenaNet.

Same with HoT.
The expansion is already rushed, systems are bugged or half in place, story is rushed out with gaps, we got 4 maps…we had to pay the full price for this…and instead of giving priority to fixing the problems we have now, you almost proudly tell us the amount of devs you have working on the “next expansion”.

And then I am not even mentioning actually actively destroying content.
Destroying dungeons, killing of WvW, PvP is still a nightmare as well…

Wake up Anet.
If you guys are going for the cashgrab nobody will be around to actually play the next expansion.
Such a different company since Guild Wars 1, even so much change since the start of GW2, or even pré HoT…
What happened to you people…

This.
Game is NCSoft’s.

This is the most dissapointing news I’ve read since I started playing. Legendaries were one of the most anticipated things by me from expac and now you just throw them away.

Just scrap the kittening collection idea, it seems like it takes too much time and those collections are often bugged anyway.. Make nice legendaries and put precursors as RNG drops and make them ‘craftable’ in Mystic Forge like all gen 1 precursors..

All anet does now is mild us for money, nickle and dime left and right. Taking rewards that you should get ingame, Soul river glider and sabatha mini come to mind, and putting them in the gem store. Making us pay for the ability to glide, and then pay for a glider? How about put the glider as a ingame reward since we already payed for gliding once. This rampant exploitative gem store business was fine when it was just buy the core game, but now they wanna but gem store nickle and dime you bullcrap when you have to buy an expansion on top of it. They have released way more outfits in the gemstore since launch of HoT, than armor in the expansion we payed FULL PRICE OF THE GAME FOR. Just complete disconnect with there community killing off the dungeon community, ruining fractals I hope this april patch is HUGE and has living world season 3 in it or else this game is dead, a year long content drought pre xpac then an overprice short xpac, just to go right back into another content drought? Do you how it makes the community feel when bugs go unfixed for months and in some cases YEARS, but still a new outfit and black loin skin every few weeks?

Thanks for all the comments. I know there’s nothing I’m going to say that will make you feel better, but I’ll share some final thoughts for the night.

I said three weeks ago I’d focus on sustainability and quality. I want to reiterate the part about sustainability. Be angry about legendary weapons, sure, but how about the recent drought of content? That kind of thing happens when we spread ourselves too thin, and when we let the content development pipeline empty out so we can fight fires. What I think we actually owe you is sustainable, predictable, high-quality content. I’m making a decision that’s painful in the short-term so we can position ourselves to deliver that.

Consider this… HoT currently has: 3 new maps (which are still buggy looking at DS) which are grindy as hell, Elite Specs which are heavy powercreep (pay to win in PvP…), a Story which is short but at least good (if you ignore the myriad of bugs f.e. in the Mordi battle), Guild halls, 2 Raids with 5 1/2 bosses, a new PvP map (which is quite unbalanced) and now only 4 legy weaps (3/4 being rarely used thanks to being underpowered or buggy)… That’s it?

I previously addressed the “half an expansion” thing, and I can point you to pages like this one and this one (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_2:_Heart_of_Thorns), but that doesn’t matter because it’s just arguing. My job is to entertain you, not to argue with you.

I strongly believe that we will in fact entertain you. We’re a team of people who love the game that you love, and are working on things we’re confident you’ll love. But I’m not here to convince you of that, and I wouldn’t expect you to take my word for it. You can make that judgment in April, and each subsequent time we ship. I will work to make you happy, and I’ll do it by making you happy with what we ship, not with what we promise to ship.

It’s time for some serious damage control. You need to show your player base that we are valued and important to you and not just the money. Businesses have costs and we all have to make do with the funding we have but it’s very clear that you guys do have the resources but are allocating them in the wrong places and doing so inefficiently. Mo you’re the new face of Anet and you’ve inherited a crap ton of broken things but instead of instilling confidence you’re essentially telling us you’re not the right man for the job. I and all these others may be ultimately inconsequential to you but there’s a lot of things that look shady here with your commendably transparent announcement. Talk about trade-offs then maybe move over some resources from the gem store weapons to your legendary weapon sector (which obviously doesn’t exist in this moment in time). You could have even gone as far getting some feedback from the community so we could tell you what we want to see moving forward before making this decision. Get us involved we are the heart of what makes the game what it is, without us you don’t have a game, you have barren lands you have, for want of a better word…nothing.

Some suggestions for damage control:

Scrap the journey/collection part and revert back to giving us the legendary skins how we originally acquired them on release. Skins aren’t hard to make as is made very clear with your gemstone weapon onslaught.

Buff dungeon rewards so they’re not left barren and unused.

Improve fractals, introduce the leaderboards, improve the drops.

PvP can’t afford to have a meta shift every so often it needs to be balanced and stable all classes need to be viable and left up to player skill to dictate the flow of a game.
There are some ridiculous cash prizes up for grabs in the ESL but how many actually tune in to watch them?

If you go back to release a lot of the legendary skins were not as cool as the greatswords but the team eventually went back and fine tuned them/made them flashier. Just deliver the skins, any skin and you can fine tune them after they don’t have to be amazing just deliver something.

We want the game to succeed we aren’t brainless zombies that don’t know what we’re talking about so probably best to not treat us as such.

Sad thing is I wholeheartedly defend this game and am the first to jump at anyone who tries to say it’s bad or dying, as a long time fan I guess all I can say of significance is get your kitten together and make this game be what it is destined to be, I.e. awesome.

Hard decision but probably the correct one it seems the game is getting more of a clear direction since Collin has left. Legendary are cool but not substitute to actual content LS3 is way more important.I feel the expansion in general was a massive learning experience for anet it kinda seems like they said this sounds cool lets do it for a lot of things and ended up biting off more than they could chew.

Just need to go back to the basics and keep producing the sort of content that made us love this game and i will be happy also maintain the communication with the player base!

Two things:

1) Can we can have an assurance that the remaining Legendaries will not be locked behind Expansion #2.

2) Other gametypes such as raids (less players do these than do Legendary weapons) and gemstore resources (we have enough stuff in the shop!) should be scaled back / suspended until all of HoT’s promised and advertised content can be implemented, and LS3 can be done properly.

Thank you for the transparency. I would have liked to see more legendary weapons, the first 3 HoT legendary weapons looks very good. Staff animation is well designed. I was looking forward to new greatsword and sword legendary weapon, and maybe craft them if they looked any better than the old legendary versions. But unlike most people on this thread I find legendary weapons waste of resources. Legendary armor on the other hand is something I’m definitely looking forward to craft. I’m relieved to find out that you’re still committed to delivering it.

But just to make it clear, even though I’m not a big fan of legendary weapons this is still disappointing. And yes, most GW2 players are in the same group as me not bothered by legendary weapons. Nevertheless, this announcement left very bad impression on us about your trust worthiness. As a company you advertised legendary weapons being big part of HoT. And you promised you will deliver all land based legendary weapons. When you fail to deliver on your promise people will start questioning your trustworthiness. Remember, this is coming from a person who always had the in-game gold and resources to craft number of legendary weapons but considered them waste of resources and not very useful.

I understand that they feel it turned out to be a bad idea ultimately, but I feel they should still finish the set (hire more people if they have to) and just not do it again if it’s so problematic. We were promised a full set and some of the current legendaries aren’t even appealing for a lot of people so it would be best if they had a choice between 2 legendaries for each.

We’re not being entertained because we’re still missing features we paid for. And now we’re being told some of them aren’t coming. So do what you want, and make the next expansion but don’t be surprised if nobody buys it because we’ve already put our faith in HoT and fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. So once again if you think putting off already bought content because you can’t pull people off the next expansion then don’t be surprised when it doesn’t sell well.

Thank you for posting this because the issue here really is about how they run their business.

I can’t wait to see what will come in April, I sincerely hope it makes us forget all about the disappointment that you brought us today. Good luck, I may be a salty sailor but I wish you all the best.

M.O. Go have dinner with your family or something. It will all still be here tomorrow. I’ve seen what you all have done to try to turn things around. You all did give us gliding in the core game (TY BTW). You have been biting the bullet and addressing the communication issue more. It will take some time for trust to mend but you all are on the right track.

Apparently I’m playing a Blizzard game now.

I won’t rant and bash for 3 paragraphs because frankly I think it was a “good” decision if it actually yields a positive result in terms of living story release time. I was severely annoyed that it was going to take so long to get the new living story season out, especially when raids are getting so much attention and I’ve yet to actually actively try to get through a genuine wing run.

I’m happy for the communication but I have to agree with some of the people above that it seems a little odd that you’re moving 6 devs that couldn’t finish more than one legendary in 6 months to speed up a living season update that is much larger than a weapon and quest chain. We haven’t seen the chain so it may be really interesting and a better way of obtaining legendaries than the collection system, but only one? And this team is supposed to boost living story production enough that it’s worth sacrificing advertised content?

After obtaining HOPE I’m in no hurry to obtain another legendary, so again, it isn’t a huge deal to me, it just seems a little nonsensical to move 6 devs from current already paid for content vs. Gem Store items or an expansion that may still be 2 or more years away. I don’t mind having a large team working on the next expansion, but would it really halt the process of making the expansion that much to move a few devs from there to work on the living story instead? It just seems like the priorities are a little shallow and the transparency also comes with a jarring epiphany that you’re more concerned about pushing out gem store items and another $100 dollar expansion quickly than current expansion content and living story.

I don’t know. It’s not a huge deal to me but it’s still a little surprising to hear how resources are being allocated and where priorities seem to be given the current state of the game and already lackluster amount of content. Again, I guess most of us got spoiled with the 2 week updates oh so long ago that we aren’t used to this new business model.

I do hope for the sake of the community that this living story 3 will be the best and biggest one to date with multiple new maps and story arcs.

Also hope this expansion in progress isn’t so dismally far away that the resources that are being allocated to it aren’t being wasted in the process.
