Not exactly removed, but new characters can’t access them anymore. If existing characters are in the middle of that chain of quests, they can still play them no problem.

So with a new patch looming and the big hype train coming, is this issue finally going to be addressed, or are Anet just kinda hoping we will forget about it and maybe it will go away?

I find it more and more difficult to enjoy the new Living Story updates, which are good storywise, while the Personal Story remains butchered the way it is.

Is it even the same company doing both?

I think taking anything out of GW2 that enhances the immersion experience is a huge mistake. Personally I liked getting new snippets of story every few levels rather than every 10 levels, because it felt like the story was truly growing with me, rather than some prize to be won after grinding 10 levels, at which point I tend to be very bored with whatever map(s) I’ve been grinding on, and very eager to see a worthwhile, fulfilling storyline- not something that’s been trimmed down. For a fantasy universe so rich with centuries of interesting, engaging lore, a cut to the story content is the last thing I want to see.

Since the expansion will come out in quite a bit of months, I really hope that stuff like traits and the personal story will be addressed in the meantime.

My alts are traitless and stuck before the broken chapter (I really don’t wanna miss it…) :-/

seriously anet, 5 months and we still have nothing. a fix to the story isn’t this hard to implement, especially since all you have to do is put all the story steps back in the order they were in already. just put it all back the way it was, and just make the orr arc longer, the story wasn’t broken in the first place, so why “fix” it?

seriously dude, 2 and half year after release and final boss is still unfinished and glitchy as hell, and no one seems to care to much. They promised back then that zhaitan fight will be epic and will be carved deeply in our memory. Yeah it is carved but as quiet huge opposite of what they promised me to deliver. I don’t think they will ever fix it, neither zhaitan or this missing chapter thing, which is really sad to me cause I really care about this kind of stuff.

kittenmit final bosses need to be a freaking kitten epic fights which u should want to replay with your friends every time for a while. I kicked Zhaitan once and I don’t feel like I wont to try again in this around half hour long, boring unfinished and buged as hell dungeon. I can only hope they want screw up fight with Mordremoth in upcoming expansion.

PS Tequatl showed us that if Arena wants to deliver an epic boss battle, they can do it.

i’m mostly concerned with the plot holes, and rearranging of the story. yes, zhaitain was anticlimatic, but hey, there aren’t alot of ways to fight a giant dragon with a small team in a dungeon. hell, i’d be happy if the mission at the source of orr were the only thing put back where it was before, i can maybe ignore the other issues if i have the epic fight before fighting a dragon, instead of an epic fight 3 years before i go fight a dragon.

That still doesn’t change the fact that it is final battle of PS, and it is unfinished, and buggy as hell. There are things like point of interest impossible to reach on the map, did u ever tried to jump of from your ship ? Try to jump after zhaitan dies to point where his body fell down. You will be surprised how bad it is. And I can’t agree there are not a lot of ways to fight him. It just need a little creativity and good will to make it much much more better. But I understand your concern about holes in PS story earlier. Without fixing them there is no even point of trying to do something about zhaitan. Which really makes me start to wonder. How the hell they could broke it even more… and do nothing about it at all.

The poi isn’t buggy, it is like a poi for future content in Arah or something they decided not to implement. Also, when you jump off of the ship…I do not see what the big deal is. You’re not suppose to jump off the ship lol.

HoT Expansion has been announced, hopefully feature pack 3 (if there will be one) will resolve the personal story’s Greatest Fear Plotline issue. We have no idea if personal story is required to do the story of Heart of Thorns, I hope it isn’t required since we’re still missing a chapter in Personal Story. If it is required, I’ll have to finish Personal Story and know I will not be able to experience the Greatest Fear chapter because Personal Story isn’t repeatable. However, Colin did state Personal Story and Living Season 1 will be repeatable. I hope that happens before Heart of Thorns is released.

They changed the order and removed an important part of it. I’m not sure for how long you’ve been playing the game, but it also important to point out that before this change you had a chapter of story to do every other level or so. Now they’re just clustered in piles and gated to every 10 levels.

I think, regarding story changes, this is the TL;DR.

There is a questline that is inaccessible to new characters (since the Feature Patch) based on what you answered the Pale Tree on what you feared the most. In addition to that, the last two chapters are switched around where Chapter 7 focuses on Trahearne cleansing Orr and Chapter 8 focuses on you doing various missions BEFORE the actual cleansing occurred. Simply put, it’s a kitten ed mess of a storyline.

can someone give me a tldr? I haven’t done the personal story past the claw island part and was actually looking forward to finishing it one day. Did they remove it?

Basically three changes was done to the Personal Story in September 2014.

  1. They removed loot/exp from kills but improved the rewards for finishing each story step (the differing names in green in top right corner of screen).
  2. They clumped each chapter into a single level requirement, putting each chapter at multiples of 10; previously each story step had its own level requirement and was more of a suggestion whereas now it is hardset (e.g., you could do a level 54 step before being level 54 previously; now the entire chapter of that level 54 step is gated to level 50 and you cannot do any of the chapter until you hit level 50).
  3. They removed the original Chapter 7 (Greatest Fear plot) sans 2 steps (Forging the Pact and Battle for Fort Trinity), they then took the fourth, third, and second-to-end steps of Chapter 8 (Against the Corruption, Cathedral of Silence/Romke’s Final Voyage, and The Source of Orr) and made them the new Chapter 7 alongside what was kept of the old Chapter 7 (now the order is Forging the Pact → Battle for Fort Trinity → Against the Corruption →Cathedral of Silence/Romke’s Final Voyage → The Source of Orr → Temple of Abaddon). On top of this, they did not alter ANY dialogue so we’re seeing references to the current chapter 8 during the current chapter 7, they even hardcoded it so that you get references to Tonn (an NPC during one greatest fear) when you’d get a reference to various NPCs regarding your greatest fear choice; on top of this, one of the story divisions during chapter 8 get hardcoded in selection for The Source of Orr (specifically, the Order of Whispers’ choice). So you not only get references to something you never can do, but something you may not do in the future. And that’s not to mention the other plot continuity errors that number in the dozens if not hundreds caused by this change.

This thread is specifically referring to the third situation. Few folks care about the first change from what I see, and the second is a mixed opinion.

There has been a statement that a fix is coming, but that it’s time and resource consuming – which can only mean that rather than a simple revert, they’re altering the dialogue to make the current plot “fit”. But even then, I can’t see how they can do that since the location for The Source of Orr requires destroying a fortification that happens in the Priory’s plan to invade further into Orr (which now happens after The Source of Orr). There has also been no ETA on when the fixes will be implemented.

I hope that’s short enough.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

I can wrap my head around cutting out Greatest Fear. That was a heavy arc, and while there’s no shortage of people who liked it very much, I can understand why it was pinched.

I can also understand the desire to shuffle around the Orr arc in general. While it was functional as it was, I don’t think anyone was against improving the story here.

What I can’t understand, or wrap my head around, or remotely comprehend, is how you take that desire to sort out the final storylines, and wind up with this trash. Plot holes left and right. Meeting people for the first time that claim to be meeting you again. Meeting people again and having them act like it’s the first time. References to characters that no longer exist in the story.

Meaningless. Personal. Story. Choices.

I won’t pretend like my voice is louder than any other in this topic, or in this community entire. But there is always the off-chance, that minute chance that this will be seen by someone relevant to the process, and so, this is for that person. I won’t ask the obvious questions, because the answers are already apparent. No, you didn’t put these changes through any real analysis or quality assurance. No, you didn’t tie off all the loose ends made when you took a Salvaging Kit to your own narrative. No, you were not thinking at capacity. If you were, there wouldn’t be a need to fix this, because there would be nothing to be fixed.

Certainly, there would be griping and groaning about the loss of the Greatest Fear, as there is now. But that would have passed in the wake of a story that made sense without it.

To call these changes premature would be a compliment. I see no reason to call this botch-up anything other than what it is: a ham-fisted blow to your entire community.

There is a silver lining, in that it only makes sense for Guild Wars 2 to carry on in the wake of its predecessor, and enable the Personal Story for re-completion, at some point further down the road. But until then, I feel terrible for anyone playing through for the first time, and realizing, even without any prior experience with the personal story, that something is terribly wrong here.

A humble request, to the person of relevance who just happens to see this: in the future, try running your ideas past a few sober heads, and avoid putting out another virtual hangover like this one. I’m “very excited” for the day this all makes sense again.

My two cents won’t matter either ..however, I would venture to say they (the Developers) for what ever reason, put gutting the Personal Story, and gutting your characters personality … etc. into the category of we just flatly don’t care about what the actual statements made at the games release. Those were just words to get you to buy the product, and now that you have they don’t care one iota about the community of players who are feeling TOTALLY RIPPED OFF … Hey, they got your money, it doesn’t matter if the storyline is fractured, or that your character has the personality trait torn away. I mean I am still playing, as disappointed as I am that every couple months something else of the world of Tyria disappeared without a trace …
Worse case scenario would be that someone will complain about that short Stoney looking guy in the basement of the Priory is just a little to offensive … and, Oops, poof … No more Ogden Stonehealer … Like it never even happened …
Forget about the storyline, obviously they have, it not about the journey to them unless you’re talking about the one to the bank.
I am glad that I had the opportunity to play a few of my thirty five characters through the original storyline, it was sad to be forced to make a choice in that no win scenario.
A players character shouldn’t have to deal with the reality of a world like that … and since we have no personality with our characters why would the choice matter anyway.

GuildWars used to be about the story, and they make a good pitch that it still is, but the reality is that you as a role player are not as important as those who compete in WvW or PvP. Look at who gets hurt after they rebuff builds in order to balance PvP, it’s those pesky role players. Sure it balances the field of battle for PvP, for about a month or so, until someone tries out a new build and it becomes the “thing” … Time to nerf again …
They are pushing PvP … And if the games storyline gets in the way they can butcher it as they feel fit …

I was one of the 74000 people who watched the PAX South Convention broadcast live and I admit I am excited about the expansion, but as I’ve watched it now about twenty times it seems the only reason to explore is to get new weapons to use in GvG/PvP/WvW …

I still have not done any personal story since Greatest Fear was removed.

That makes me sad, because I love(d) the personal story.

I cannot play it because it makes no sense now and if it ever does get fixed I do not want to be stuck having done it a way that made no sense.

I feel sorry for anyone who never got to see it the way that makes sense.

I also feel sorry for all of the new and returning players who will be going through personal story when they show up for Heart of Thorns. This might be just the thing that makes or breaks whether one of those players will stay.

Heart of Thorns will be a good time to make a good impression and might really boost the playerbase. But this removal made things worse.

And before you get any ideas, no. Removing personal story entirely is not the answer. Removing things is not the answer. It is what made this mess. This mess that has easy solutions mentioned by others in this thread, so I won’t repeat them here.

You have shown a recent commitment to stop removing things. I like that about LS S2 very much. I play LS S2 a lot and enjoy it a lot. It keeps me in the game and keeps me happy. I just wish personal story did that too. I used to play personal story a lot, but now when I make a new character I just grind levels and avoid the personal story like the mixed-up mess it is in the hopes that one day you can fix it and I can go back to enjoying it too. I really want to play and enjoy personal story, but can’t because Greatest Fear is still missing. So that makes me sad.

I loved going back in GW1 and replaying my favorite parts of the story. GW1 was always better than GW2 for that. I hope some day personal story (and LS S1) are all replayable. So everyone can appreciate all the lore, and all the work that went into making GW2 a great game worthy of its players.

Do it for the new players. Do it for the returning players. Do it for your loyal old players. Do it for the money. Bring Greatest Fear back and make the story make sense again. You will be loved by everyone in this thread and by the player base at large and you will make lots of money and live happily ever after!

I inquired about these concerns, and our narrative director shared the following:

Thank you so much for your comments. We realize that the changes that were made have impacted the personal story, and we are working to fix this. This requires a good deal of resources, so we do not have a set date for when these fixes will be implemented. We appreciate your patience and will update with more information as it becomes available.

So 2 months later and still no sign on this being fixed, how can new GW2 players enjoy a story driven game with a broken and fractured story, please can we get some more infomation on this issue. Keep bumping this thread untill more is done!

I’m recently getting back into GW2 after a long dry-spell- nothing made me angry or quit the game, I just had my senior year of college to worry about.

Then I see this. This is insane- “Greatest Fear” was easily the best part of the later Personal Story. I actually wasn’t paying all that much attention, so I was actually shocked when it happened- it was a major blow for my charr guardian to be tricked and muck up so badly.

And I loved every minute of it.

I had heard so many good things about the other two fears, I couldn’t wait to try them out.

Now I can’t.

ANet, I love ya, but what are you DOING? I know I’m just repeating what a lot of other people are saying, and, well- good. Maybe if enough players keep saying the same thing, you’ll give us back what was a wonderfully told tale about the shortcomings of our hero- something we desperately needed for our hero to be relatable and human (or charr, asura, et cetera).

It just makes no sense to take away things that everyone really seemed to like.

ANet, I love ya, but what are you DOING?

I recently had someone tell me that they were buying Whispers Order armor on one character to unlock the skin, to then use on a separate character. When I asked “why not just get it on the character you want to use it on directly?” They replied with something to the effect of “This character is only an ‘honorary’ member of the Order of Whispers for right now. I have their whole story all planned out but I won’t actually be playing through it until/unless they fix the personal story.” This person can’t even bring themselves to play personal story, even though they really want to, because of how personal story is right now. This is bad.

For the sake of not confusing new players, or not creating old players who feel that way about the game, reintroducing Greatest Fear and making the story make sense again should be an important fix.

If they are working on fixing it and say it costs a great deal of resources. I can imagine that that means we need to be patient for quite a bit.

I pretty sure they are going through alot of problems since the system was changed which means that it takes time. Sadly, that generally means a few months usually with ArenaNet. You’d say it’s pretty simple, but then again I dunno either. Probably something with all the different languages, QA and all that other stuff they sometimes talk about saying that it takes alot of time.

I’m just echoing what everyone else has said in this thread, as hopefully the sheer amount of people here will help you change your minds. The greatest fear arc was a great way to give our characters weakness, and I miss it terribly.

Also, please put the remaining story steps back where they were. I cried when I originally played Source of Orr in its proper place; having it so near the beginning with no buildup really kills the mood it tries to set.

This is so frustrating… I’m a new player, (decided to get gw2 on friends behest and hots announcement). So I go through the personal story, enjoying it immensely (managed to tickle my inner lore nerd) all the way up to fort trinity battle. Now suddenly I’m having an orb that I’ve never seen nor heard of before being shoved in my face. No preface, no context just here’s an orb that can foil zhaitan’s plans, and here’s an unending undead army, have at it. I Immediately alt+f4 and googled the issue and apparently the ps has been gutted. In addition to being spoiled for what seems like a really intriguing and important part of the story, it also seems I’m locked out of this content because I didn’t halt my personal story before “forging the pact” mission (which I’ve completed fully, my character is also lvl 80). Is this how it’s actually going to pan out for my favorite character? Their personal story is borked beyond recovery? Please tell me it ain’t so.

Edit: It also seems the cinematic at the end of the fort trinity battle is bugged, there’s no dialogue, no sound effects just a mellow ambient theme running on loop, seems a bit weird to not be a bug.

Any update on when they are going to fix this issue yet? As noted earlier, I refuse to play the story any further, on any character, in it’s current butchered form. The branching missions after you select your ‘greatest fear’ should never have been removed. Not to mention the overall story makes no sense now, plus Season 1 is not playable for new players (There are so many characters that talk to me, yet I have no clue who they are – I didn’t even know who Jory, Kas, Taimi, Braham & Rox were!)

Any update ANet?

It is a good thing that you guys at Anet keep trying to improve the overall GW2-experience, but with changing the last chapters of the personal story, you did a disservice to the players. It was great the way it was before the patch. Actually I liked the story that much – especially the last two arcs – that I couldn’t wait to get there with every single character.

Now one of the best parts (greatest fear arc) is missing and the chapters 7 & 8 are in complete dearangement and chaos. Almost disturbed-Tarantino-like. Call my insane, but I just can’t continue playing the personal story beyond “A light in the darkness”/chapter 6 with none of my characters. It may be too late for my Asura but for the sake of my Norn Guardian, my Human thief and the revenant I am so eager to create – please Anet, change it back the way it was.

Throwing my support in for a restoration of the Greatest Fear arc as well as a fix of the entire Orr arc. I know that it’s personally killed my desire to progress my alts through the story past the Light in the Darkness mission where they first make the Fear choice because I know they won’t get to experience that part of the story like I first enjoyed back on my main in 2012. Worse, the idea that the Orr storyline has been shaken up into a convoluted mess for no good reason is incredibly frustrating: would it really be so hard to restore the original mission order so the story makes sense again and simply make Chapter 8 extra-long? It’s the epic conclusion to the personal storyline, so it’s not like it wouldn’t be fitting. As much as I’d love to get all my characters to 80 in anticipation of HoT, it kills my motivation to know that they can’t experience the full storyline along the way. Please make it a priority to fix before the expansion drops!

Would be nice to see some update sometime soon. Is anyone even working to fix this? Will it be before HoT release? This is personal story we are talking about. There are so many ppl scratching their heads and thinking – “what’s going on here”, while playing this chapter.

I know few people who don’t post on forums but like me, are stuck with their characters because they don’t want to play a broken story.

I’m not letting this go so easily. I don’t understand why they would take things out, and why, if they took anything out, they would take one of the deepest, most fascinating, and most fun chapters to play through.

Since I was lucky enough to play through the Personal Story before this mess, I found that my adventures through the Greatest Fear Plotline were still chronicled in the “My Story” part of the Hero tab. Hopefully that means we’ll see it re-instated? It hasn’t been completely wiped, at least.

There you have it Anet – now even HE is bothered with what happened to the personal story. Do not ever invoke the wrath of Sithis. xD

Essentially if they don’t fix it ( and im inclined to think they wont despite the fact it just needs a revert and no one has EVER explained why chapters have been chopped about) they will FORCE players to cave in and do the story because some Masteries will be sitting behind Personal Story Completion…

Oh this is absolutely what they are gonna do, sorry but it’s been three years and the Zhaitan fight hasn’t even been touched.

I have zero faith in anything pre-HoT being fixed soon if ever. Hell, every time I was working on a characters map completion I always found the Iron Marches heart with the loggers to be a utter pain because it is ALWAYS broken.

But hell, why fix broken stuff when they can just break what’s not broken? After all it is far less time consuming to break something then it is to build something.

The Dread-Father watches upon them.

Anyway, jokes aside, I would love to some ANet update in this topic.

If you have an old character that completed the personal story before the “feature pack” the history is all messed up. It shows the story steps in the original order except the last one is “Temple of the Forgotten God” repeated a second time instead of “Victory or Death”. This is such a joke. They can’t even redo the story to a version that everyone hates without creating a bunch of bugs that they pretend don’t exist and reuse to address.

I refuse to play anymore personal story until it is fixed so now I have 3 level 80s who have not advanced beyond the first couple of chapters. Seriously guys it has been almost a year and nothing has been done despite enormous outrage from the player base. The changes could have been simply reverted and everyone would be satisfied.

I won’t spend another dime on this game until this issue is resolved. Even if all they do is fix the history for old characters. If you are going to make a mess and kitten everyone off at least do it in a consistent bug fee manner. Hit them in the pocket book. It is the only way they will listen.

Seriously? How has Anet just ignored this for so long. I stopped playing right before I made the decision on what my greatest fear was going to be back in 2012-13 and when I came back to the game I was really hoping to finish the story.

Now I see that it’s just missing entirely and I"ll never get to experience it. My story journal won’t ever be complete. This is such nonsense. FIX IT! TALK TO US!

Because Anet excels at ignoring veteran players in the hopes that we’ll all either go away or shut up if ignored and/or given a canned Gaile-message telling us absolutely nothing but soothing reassurances that something could happen sometime, but she can’t promise anything or say more about it.

She’s a lovely lady. Its not her fault. But it very much is somebody’s fault, and they should feel bad.

For the first time since the NPE changes went live, I’ve managed to level an alt up to this point in the story. That’s when I remembered that this part of the story was removed for no real purpose and that I was heading into the butchered end chapters. I came here with some small hope that something, anything had been done in the intervening months to rectify some of the problems with this situation, but it seems that there is no disappointment too small for Anet to deliver.

Another reminder that there was nothing wrong with the personal story as it was, and all you had to do to fix this was not break it in the first place.

They could have ‘fixed’ the traits in exactly the same manner.

Odd, innit?

Reading this thread disheartened me. I suddenly don’t want to progress Personal Story anymore.

I began playing on launch, and only recently got a character to this portion. This section is very reminiscent to me of the work of David Lynch in how bonkers it all seems, just not anywhere near as entertaining, well-executed, or ultimately fitting into place.

Certainly the most confusing part of the story. previously it was wondering what sort of geniuses decide to commit arson on an orphanage then lock themselves inside.

Divinity’s Reach is home to some top-tier criminal masterminds.
The kind of people who will set an orphanage on fire after locking themselves inside it.

New player here, got the game during that 75% off sale [a friend bought it for me] and I only recently completed the Personal Story.

The greatest fear scene with the tree was rather confusing for me, I fully expected that to play into the coming story segment but it didn’t at all. I have since learned it was supposed to before it got cut from the game and I have to say that the current set-up is horrible.

Instead of the tree saying something meaningful she is essentially asking a random question that doesn’t mean anything. It would be like visiting the Queen of England before a very important mission only to have her ask you if you’re scared of bees, spiders, or ants. It comes out of no where, is unexpected, and does nothing for the mission other than making the Queen look a little ‘loopy’.

I hope this aspect gets re-added to the game at some point, as well as seeing the story progression get fixed.

I don’t know who it was that decided to RUIN the story for new players but they should be fired and replaced with a potato. Unlike the current employee the potato would actually make good decisions.

Thank you for your time.
