Odd things that break your immersion?
Disconnections. It is like waking up in a middle of a nice dream.
YES. It’s like a nightmare. First you see people start running in different directions, then you try and press a skill and it loads forever, you try and type something but it doesn’t work … ugh, horror-inducing.
dont forget the “pls pls pls maybe its only a terrible lag”moment of hope and then…… phut…. dc
omg yes :‘( and it’s not like it pauses the game when you dc and throw you back/redirects you to character selection when your connection is back. No, the entire game lags or shuts down and you have to wait for it to load, log in, pick a character and load the map, only to find out you’ve been kicked. </3
Honestly…there’s not much left to “immerse” you in this game….how about the other way around.
What immerses you in GW2?
Playing solo, going offline mode and just exploring a fantastically created game-world……while avoiding hubs at all costs.
To be honest playing this game like an offline RPG works for me with a sprinkle of co-op when I run into random people. That’s the most fun I get now-a-days and it reminds me just how immersive this game can actually be if you avoid the rat-race and work-simulator aspects of this game…..at least until a zerg turns up.
That beats the whole purpose of an mmo…and means it’s either broken or has major problems immersing people into their world. What you said is not a big plus..it’s actually a very big minus honestly.

Besides by avoiding work and the rat race in the game you’re barred from all the best gear. Games are supposed to be games. At least we won’t have to craft forever. One of these days I’ll actually be able to sell my mats and save up some nice money for dyes and skins.

Not really. Some people just enjoy doing their own thing in a populated world. I generally play solo and work towards my own goals, but still enjoy having other people around for more of a white noise effect. I still hop in for events and reviving and such and like to throw out random buffs to people running by, but we all don’t need or want to be directly socializing all the time. That would be incredibly draining for me.
Hm, I’d have to say the #1 immersion breaker is people with stupid names. And/or fanboys. Not that I’m a huge RP-lore stickler, but the names that obviously don’t even try are absolutely irritating.

I absolutely love people with “stupid”/creative names. It gives me a little chuckle every single time. I hope people with a sense of humor never stop playing video games.
And besides, people give their kids stupid names every day in real life too. : P
Honestly, the only thing that can break somebody’s “immersion” in a game, is their lack of “imagination” in real life.

I love the creative ones that make me giggle. Then again, I’m one of those horrible people that like puns. =P
It’s dumb stuff like “Lolhax” and “Rektdeath” that make me want to punch babies.

I’m sorry to hear that. And I hope that is hyperbole.

Call me a gw1 purist/patriot, but playing with charr breaks it for me. Keeps snapping me out of it and I’m like wait aren’t I’m supposed to kill them
Minis are by far the biggest offender in this book.
That I “magically” TP to every “magic stone” instead of using a kitten ed mount.
That I “magically” TP to every “magic stone” instead of using a kitten ed mount.
You could just think that you have a magic pass that enables their usage. It helps keep gameplay and story integrated. I always think for example when going to lower level areas due to scaling that time isn’t linear but rather me in those regions is further back in time whereas level 80 zones are the present. Like my character is 14 years old in the starter zones but 18 in level 80 zones.
Asura. I can’t believe the other races haven’t united to exterminate them.
My max hight norn guardian, with a 2h hammer…fighting an asura.
They need to get an animation based on what hitting a frog on a rock with a giant mallet would look like.

OK, props for a Gallagher clip.
Then there’s Quaggan — my earlier comment applies to them, also. The only thing that makes sense about Quaggan is de-stuffing them to use as a backpack.
I dont really get immersed but I do find all forms of teleporting / fast travel really jarring. Never liked it in any game.
When Non lore frinedly named Sylvari Rpers insert thier horrible headcanon as lore and rp as if they arent doing anthing wrong.(PS YOU RUIN IT FOR PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY CARE)
1. Just like with any game, low fps really takes away from the experience. When it drops to below 40, it starts to feel slower and laggier, and it really does make it horrible.
2. Laptop fan making lots of noise. Even with headphones this is still a problem.
I probably shouldn’t complain about these things because considering my terrible 1.6 ghz processor, I should be grateful that I can even run it.

Which? The groan-worthy names or baby punching?
I don’t keep babies nearby when playing MMOs, just in case. :P
But sadly, those names are (probably) real. u.u

Ohgods, walking in on someone’s “private” RP when I’m nowhere near them. I cry. Literally. I /cry frequently.
ANet, please, with quaggan cookies on top, lower the emote range. I’m actually begging not to have all of Rata Sum hear what’s going on in the crafting stations.

running an event and stopping to get a node…sort of takes the energy/vibe out of it.
A mentor who couldnt fight his or her way out of a wet paper sack supposedly being expected to hold back an undead army solo at Claw Island. This is why I dont care for any of the order mentors.
The use of swords, axes, etc in a setting where assault rifles, machine pistols, flame throwers, grenades, bazookas, combat drones, tanks, helicopters, rapid fire artillery, etc are common.
I suppose there are some in-game things that cut off my immersion. And every time my super-agile thief messes up any part of a JP I wince because it’s not ICly how he is
But the main thing that throws my mind out of the game is the /say chat by the DR bank and in the Rata Sum banking area. People blithely chat along about RL stuff. I’m not saying they can’t or even shouldn’t, if it’s giving them social pleasure, but I usually hide such things in guild chat, party chat, whispers … if I do OOC comments in /say they still refer to game mechanics or things that just happened in the game. So seeing people going “Hi OddName! You going to see that movie tonight? OdderName said he was!” (only usually in abbreviated texting speak) wrenches me out of any sense of being in Tyria.
People spamming /dance. Basically ruins the game, so I have to set character model limit to lowest 95% of the time. Not that I RP or anything, but it is just so kitten annoying

The same could be said for walking everywhere when Charr tanks and Asura golems exist. Oh, and airships are a thing. But we still walk.

Intelligent Char, wings, bunny ears, heck all the costume things that define an “Asian” mmo, no litter boxes for Char, perma invisibility, sad fact Asurans have not blown themselves up, troll minions that play the same irritating sound track over and over and over ect, no cat nip for distracting and interrupting Char, no cleric class in game, not enough different looking armors; how many dusters can one have?, and way too many jumping puzzles that rely on silly jump or die mechanics; scratch that way too many jumping puzzles period.
I don’t particularly have immersion. But the dog pulling the electric cord out of the wall and putting the room in pitch darkness in the middle of a big fight didn’t help.
ANet may give it to you.
The font (modern San Serif) break my immersion in this supposed medieval world of Tyria.

I teleport fairly frequently.
The immersion breaking aspect of transport in Tyria, to me, is the fact that we escort pack animals rather than teleporting them.
It depends what you mean by immersion… I have no immersion in the game, by which I mean the mechanics – skills & effects, the things you actually do that affect your character in-game. Despite the fact that I am both a re-enactor & a Medieval Martial Artist, not even the daft, unrealistic, things that game designers imagine can be done with… you name it, I don’t have an issue with game mechanics in any game. With players on forums who want to tell me that e.g. the whip is a viable weapon, that’s another matter, but let’s not side-track…
What breaks my immersion is the really bad storytelling. It wasn’t especially good at release, and it’s only got worse. Half of the things that we’re asked to do are ridiculous, nonsensical and, sometimes, utterly ludicrous. The Anet writers are certainly creative, but they’ve absolutely no grounding in anything remotely resembling “sensible”, “reasonable” or real-world mechanics (yes, I realise dozens of you will now wilfully jump on that last clause, if you haven’t been doing so already for earlier ones).
Frankly, a large percentage of what we do, and why we are doing, is arrant nonsense. I play the game because I enjoy the game and, as importantly, the social side; the company of my guildies.
Immersion? Where GW2 is concerned, for me, there is none. If, for you, there is, then you are luckier than I.
Hitting keys on my keyboard. Clicking with my mouse. Breathing. You know, even existing may be a reminder that I don’t live in a video game.
The music is just a big vat with nothing remotely attached to a specific region like in GW1. The incessant, stupid, vapid chatter from NPCs. Shut up already! I know you’re rich and that your time is precious. Oh, and those doves too. Punk hairstyles with neon colors pretty much kills it as well. I could also mention uninspired voice acting in many cut-scenes and sometimes unconvincing skyboxes (i.e. flat low-res textures for “clouds”). Well-lit caverns when there are no light sources anywhere. Ambient sound effects in nature for the most parts are seriously lacking…
The lines most characters use when they get buffs.
I can’t stand how cheesy they are.
Buttflaps on every piece of gear in game.
I don’t even know what my butt looks like anymore.
When I’m trying to enjoy my chat with friends and my chatbox gets flooded with people using emotes.
Please stahp it.
When I realize I am a commander of the pact but I don’t get any pact weapons like the rest of my army has. I have to gamble for them with BLC.
Edit – the fact I have to keep my music off because I can’t stand to listen to the same song over and over.
A great edge of the seat solo boss fight with adds that ends when the boss suddenly decides he is too far away from where he is supposed to be standing and he goes invuln and casually saunters off .
Hearing Guild Wars 1 music. I love the GW1 OST but so much of it was recycled into GW2 and I find it jarring when it pops up.
Especially if the music is out of place, like hearing Sands of Kryta in Frostgorge Sound or the music from pre-searing Ascalon in Orr. The regions in GW1 all had their own set musical theme and it helped set the atmosphere. In GW2 it’s all just dumped into a giant pile.
It makes me glad that HoT has its own, new music.
^this. I just think back to GW1 when I hear the music. Then it just feels wrong, like I should be somewhere else. But then people who have not played GW1 don’t. Get this problem.

Odd things? Well there’s this:
The Admiral Taidha Covington.
Sure, the rank and all that stuff is pretty and no doubt she’s a skilled and fearsome individual. But tell me why it takes so many sword slashes, bullets, explosives and meteor showers to kill a human? I sometimes realize it mid fight, it’s… egh.
Also, I suppose I’m lucky to have made a charr engineer for it barely has anything cheesy in terms of quotes. Still, that doesn’t prevent me from cringing when I hear that one guy yelling “Eat my dust!” or being like “Unbroken! Unshaken! Resolved!” It’s like… yeah, cool… dude.

Flying creatures that hover in place, waiting for me to enter their airspace. Don’t they get tired of flapping their wings? Don’t they roost?
Mostly wings, I didn’t mind the older ones, but the newer black and white ones just are so jarring and huge they jerk me right out of any immersion in the game world. If they gave us a toggle to disable seeing back items, as much as I love some of them, I would turn it on just to never see those ridiculous things again. That, and the stupid unicorn bow. I guess it is supposed to be a joke, but it’s a bad one.

Man, +1 for you. I’d never really thought about it, but I’d love a font option in game. I’ve got some great fonts I use in my e-book reader, based entirely on early industrial type sets that would be absolutely awesome for the early industrial semi steam punk setting of GW2.

Her gate is also impervious to magic and melee attacks, except for random barrels of explosive because reasons. Not sure why we’re not using materials from that gate to build forts out of in the Silverwastes. Modremoth’s minions won’t stand a chance.

Yeah, just think. If she hadn’t left those barrels out there, she’d be safe. Foiled by poor organisation.

I could make a whole thread on how to properly name a character in GW 2 and no one will even read it still.

Well, ignoring the ship of the line bombarding the gate.
“If Mordremoth can attack the mother tree in The Grove, it can attack anywhere” x 100 in a short amount of time. (Ok, exaggeration but breaks immersion for me.)
A lot of other NPC quotes too that either don’t fit or repeat far too often.
Ambient sounds aswell, especially in Lions Arch around the fountains. For a city it’s really quiet. If you go to Hoelbrak you hear hustle and bustle as if you’re walking through a city. LA is, well, dull.
I hate that end boss NPC in the snow fractal that keep saying “feel your weakness” or something, he keeps saying it every darn time he comes down.. thought they would tone him down already :P
Another thing that breaks my immersion is how everything is so pretty out there, but yet we cant duel one another.. yea a topic to be discussed elsewhere.
“Your weakness makes me laugh.”
He’s cool though. No hard feelings.
Anime themed human female elementalist/mesmers hurt my eyes.
You have a problem with Canthans? I can get that some people just make a character and don’t bother to change its appearance at the start. As Ele/Mes/guardian human females default as a very “super moe cute” level Asian face for the Canthan heritage in the Guild Wars universe.
I really want to see more Elonian descent characters and proper named like Mohammad or something or African tribal names even.
Show your love for a bit more variety and the games different cultures!

Probably because there’s no “proper” way to name a character. People can name their stuff whatever they want to name it

Probably because there’s no “proper” way to name a character. People can name their stuff whatever they want to name it
This in completly untrue, If you are going to RP it would only take someone a few minutes to understand sylvari Naming conventions, All you would have to do is look at the names NPC’s. Sylvari all have Celtic names as well as Names from Arthurian Legend, They also do not have a Surname. Sure, name your character whatever, It especially doesnt matter if your not gonna rp or anythng. But If I see Alan BarkTree the sylvari RPing as a Warden of The Grove and he has spent his whole life there(Name slightly altered, but yes this happened) It makes no sense and breaks Immersion to all heck.
Anything related to super adventure box.

Obviously because she’s tough enough to take it.
Odd things that break your immersion?
Stupid map/instance transition portals. Ugly, immersion breaking and unnecessary.
