YES. It’s like a nightmare. First you see people start running in different directions, then you try and press a skill and it loads forever, you try and type something but it doesn’t work … ugh, horror-inducing.

dont forget the “pls pls pls maybe its only a terrible lag”moment of hope and then…… phut…. dc

omg yes :‘( and it’s not like it pauses the game when you dc and throw you back/redirects you to character selection when your connection is back. No, the entire game lags or shuts down and you have to wait for it to load, log in, pick a character and load the map, only to find out you’ve been kicked. </3

Honestly…there’s not much left to “immerse” you in this game….how about the other way around.

What immerses you in GW2?

Playing solo, going offline mode and just exploring a fantastically created game-world……while avoiding hubs at all costs.

To be honest playing this game like an offline RPG works for me with a sprinkle of co-op when I run into random people. That’s the most fun I get now-a-days and it reminds me just how immersive this game can actually be if you avoid the rat-race and work-simulator aspects of this game…..at least until a zerg turns up.

That beats the whole purpose of an mmo…and means it’s either broken or has major problems immersing people into their world. What you said is not a big plus..it’s actually a very big minus honestly.

Besides by avoiding work and the rat race in the game you’re barred from all the best gear. Games are supposed to be games. At least we won’t have to craft forever. One of these days I’ll actually be able to sell my mats and save up some nice money for dyes and skins.

Not really. Some people just enjoy doing their own thing in a populated world. I generally play solo and work towards my own goals, but still enjoy having other people around for more of a white noise effect. I still hop in for events and reviving and such and like to throw out random buffs to people running by, but we all don’t need or want to be directly socializing all the time. That would be incredibly draining for me.

And besides, people give their kids stupid names every day in real life too. : P

Honestly, the only thing that can break somebody’s “immersion” in a game, is their lack of “imagination” in real life.

That I “magically” TP to every “magic stone” instead of using a kitten ed mount.

You could just think that you have a magic pass that enables their usage. It helps keep gameplay and story integrated. I always think for example when going to lower level areas due to scaling that time isn’t linear but rather me in those regions is further back in time whereas level 80 zones are the present. Like my character is 14 years old in the starter zones but 18 in level 80 zones.

1. Just like with any game, low fps really takes away from the experience. When it drops to below 40, it starts to feel slower and laggier, and it really does make it horrible.

2. Laptop fan making lots of noise. Even with headphones this is still a problem.

I probably shouldn’t complain about these things because considering my terrible 1.6 ghz processor, I should be grateful that I can even run it.

I suppose there are some in-game things that cut off my immersion. And every time my super-agile thief messes up any part of a JP I wince because it’s not ICly how he is

But the main thing that throws my mind out of the game is the /say chat by the DR bank and in the Rata Sum banking area. People blithely chat along about RL stuff. I’m not saying they can’t or even shouldn’t, if it’s giving them social pleasure, but I usually hide such things in guild chat, party chat, whispers … if I do OOC comments in /say they still refer to game mechanics or things that just happened in the game. So seeing people going “Hi OddName! You going to see that movie tonight? OdderName said he was!” (only usually in abbreviated texting speak) wrenches me out of any sense of being in Tyria.

It depends what you mean by immersion… I have no immersion in the game, by which I mean the mechanics – skills & effects, the things you actually do that affect your character in-game. Despite the fact that I am both a re-enactor & a Medieval Martial Artist, not even the daft, unrealistic, things that game designers imagine can be done with… you name it, I don’t have an issue with game mechanics in any game. With players on forums who want to tell me that e.g. the whip is a viable weapon, that’s another matter, but let’s not side-track…

What breaks my immersion is the really bad storytelling. It wasn’t especially good at release, and it’s only got worse. Half of the things that we’re asked to do are ridiculous, nonsensical and, sometimes, utterly ludicrous. The Anet writers are certainly creative, but they’ve absolutely no grounding in anything remotely resembling “sensible”, “reasonable” or real-world mechanics (yes, I realise dozens of you will now wilfully jump on that last clause, if you haven’t been doing so already for earlier ones).

Frankly, a large percentage of what we do, and why we are doing, is arrant nonsense. I play the game because I enjoy the game and, as importantly, the social side; the company of my guildies.

Immersion? Where GW2 is concerned, for me, there is none. If, for you, there is, then you are luckier than I.

The music is just a big vat with nothing remotely attached to a specific region like in GW1. The incessant, stupid, vapid chatter from NPCs. Shut up already! I know you’re rich and that your time is precious. Oh, and those doves too. Punk hairstyles with neon colors pretty much kills it as well. I could also mention uninspired voice acting in many cut-scenes and sometimes unconvincing skyboxes (i.e. flat low-res textures for “clouds”). Well-lit caverns when there are no light sources anywhere. Ambient sound effects in nature for the most parts are seriously lacking…

Hearing Guild Wars 1 music. I love the GW1 OST but so much of it was recycled into GW2 and I find it jarring when it pops up.

Especially if the music is out of place, like hearing Sands of Kryta in Frostgorge Sound or the music from pre-searing Ascalon in Orr. The regions in GW1 all had their own set musical theme and it helped set the atmosphere. In GW2 it’s all just dumped into a giant pile.

It makes me glad that HoT has its own, new music.

^this. I just think back to GW1 when I hear the music. Then it just feels wrong, like I should be somewhere else. But then people who have not played GW1 don’t. Get this problem.

You have a problem with Canthans? I can get that some people just make a character and don’t bother to change its appearance at the start. As Ele/Mes/guardian human females default as a very “super moe cute” level Asian face for the Canthan heritage in the Guild Wars universe.

This in completly untrue, If you are going to RP it would only take someone a few minutes to understand sylvari Naming conventions, All you would have to do is look at the names NPC’s. Sylvari all have Celtic names as well as Names from Arthurian Legend, They also do not have a Surname. Sure, name your character whatever, It especially doesnt matter if your not gonna rp or anythng. But If I see Alan BarkTree the sylvari RPing as a Warden of The Grove and he has spent his whole life there(Name slightly altered, but yes this happened) It makes no sense and breaks Immersion to all heck.
