That’s between 100-200 hours. That’s a lot of hours for most games.

That’s a lot of hours for SINGLE PLAYER games. For games with multiplayer components, that’s laughably few. In one of my favorite games of ever, having only 100 hours of play will get you booted from most lobbies for being a noob (unless it’s a noob-only lobby).

Did you read my post or you pick that sentence and freak out? I said EXACTLY THAT. Most ppl play MMO like they play a single player RPG. Even when they join a guild, they stay in their corner, complete the storyline, do a couple dungeons, get some get and that’s it, they are out of the game, and right into the next one. I was like that with WoW and SWOTOR. I was in 3 different PvE guild in GW2 and it was the same kitten for all three. About 50-60% of the players were never mixing with the rest, played 100-200 hours and never came back.

They are single player gamers that try out MMO to get that single player rpg feeling. Whatever you do, you won’t keep them in the game, that’s not what they search.

You might want to refrain from accusations of “freaking out” when your posts are far more histrionic than the one you respond too.

Perhaps you should also focus on what I said. I specifically referenced that 100-200 hours is not a lot for games with multiplayer components. If MMOs are unable to keep people playing for that amount of time, they’re doing something incredibly wrong. FPS, MOBAs and RTS games manage to keep people playing much longer than that and many would argue they’re far more repetitive. So I reiterate, 100-200 hours is not much for a game with multiplayer. Any multiplayer game unable to maintain people’s attention longer than that is severely lacking.

Actually I think you’ll find that most people who try an MMO don’t last 100 hours in most of them. That’s why devs keep trying to retain more. Even WoW revamped their opening because too many people weren’t sticking with the game long term.

See above response.

“Top equipment” would be ascended gear which can only be obtained by crafting it for yourself. So, no, it never had the ability to get the top equipment by playing how you want.

Or doing world events.
Or doing Fractals.
Or doing WvW.

So basically doing most things in the game (except PvP, where it doesn’t even matter).

EDIT: Oh, apparently you can actually ALSO get them from PvP. So apparently you can get them for doing a grand total of everything in the game.

How do world events get you ascended armor and weapons?
I don’t do fractals. I knew they were good for ascended trinkets but are they good for getting weapons and armor?
I do mostly WvW and you can only get trinkets not weapons and armor so that’s wrong.

Edit: The WvW only offers rings, amulets, and accessories. Not back items. Just as the laurel merchant doesn’t sell back items.

What it has had is the ability to get the top equipment by playing how you want. Just like the quote says. It has never represented otherwise, and has never been otherwise.

“Top equipment” would be ascended gear which can only be obtained by crafting it for yourself. So, no, it never had the ability to get the top equipment by playing how you want.

Nope.

The gun at the bottom right? Drop from a champion in Dry Top.
The armour chest next to it? Drop from a keep lord in WvW.
Koss on Koss? Mystic Forged through items farmed acquired over time or bought off the TP.
The necklace at the top left? Bought with laurels.
The rings and accessories? Random WvW rewards, either as drops from mobs or through WvW level ups.

This isn’t counting the accessories, necklace, and rings that my character is actually wearing, all bought with laurels from dailies and monthlies, doing what I wanted to do.

Not a single one of those required me to craft anything or do anything I didn’t want to do.

Since when can you get the ascended armour set with the stats you want by doing world events, fractals and wvw? These are random and fairly useless.

Irrelevant. You can potentially get the best stat gear without crafting, and by doing whatever you want.

Obviously, going out of your way to do it the specifically best way will be faster and easier, but that’s how things work. Sure, you could run around queensdale killing random mobs and eventually get 5,000 gold by selling vendor trash, but it’s clearly not the fastest way, and does not mean that you can’t eventually get that by doing what you want.

WORLD BOSSES

Before:

  • Open an online timer for your server, group with like-minded players and do events that you want when you want (just be sure to get there 30min+ early so you are all on the same server, or be split into overflows). Feel yourself as a hero who willingly saves Tyria from daily threats (while still in a zerg, cause everyone else knows the timers as well)! Feel how the world is living and changing because of you, coordinate with people and announce the next boss you gonna beat(what’s the next boss in the timer? Fire ele? ZERG TO FIRE ELE!)!
  • Beat a world boss with some 3-5 people next to you at low hours, and feel great because it was challenging and fun(or find out you wasted time)! Or do not beat it and understand that your efforts were not enough and you should get better(or realize some events were meant for more than 5 people, so you were doomed to fail at the start).

Now:

  • After the Megaservers improvement, put a list of times for world bosses next to your PC and stop doing whatever you were doing offline to join the boss you want to play. Feel like you’re doing a scheduled task at your job in the office(because guessing when pre events were going to finish was a great idea, as you had to keep a webpage refreshing to see timers changing).
  • Always be accompanied by a megazerg, tag and spam “111” to win(this hasn’t changed from before). No need to know the encounter, you won’t see anything because of particle effects and lags (no change from before).

How do world events get you ascended armor and weapons?

Technically any content that drops empyreals, dragonite and/or bloodstone dust can also drop a weapon/armor ascended box. The chances of getting one are extremely low. The chance of getting ones with useful stats are even lower. The chances of completing a gear for the build of your choice are so vanishingly small, as to be practically nonexistent, You are more likely to win the big one in lottery.

I don’t do fractals. I knew they were good for ascended trinkets but are they good for getting weapons and armor?

See the above. The chance for ascended box drops are higher than usual, but due to the fact that stats are random, it’s still not a practical source of that gear.

And yes, they also drop from WvW rank-up chests. The fact that you haven’t noticed it should tell you something about how dependable a source it is.

Actions, not words.

I have to agree with the OP.

I started playing GW2 because of the total freedom it gave, and also the way in which the developers had pretty much eliminated 90% of the things many people dislike about online mmo rpgs.

But with each and every recent update, they take away another thing that made this game great.

It started with the destruction of the personal story and is spreading like wildfire through the whole game. Pretty soon there will be nothing left.

Both me and my wife have collectively spent several hundred £ on stuff from the gemstore, but we both feel a little betrayed, and are unlikely to spend much more if the rot continues to spread.

Very sad times approaching.

If you don’t do Fractals, Ascended is kind of a non-issue as far as “needing it”.

I mean, wanting it and needing it are two separate matters. I want me a jetpack skin but I didn’t get it in the few times I had a chance.

I’ve been playing since a few months after release and had a single ascended trinket drop for me in WvW. The drop rate is too pathetic to be reliable because such a rare RNG can mean that you could die from old age and never so much as get an ascended armor piece drop.

I can guarantee you that by the time this game comes to an end, there will be those who will never got an ascended armor and/or weapon drop (rewarded probably but not as a drop). So I would say that since such a thing is possible, it fails to satisfy Falaha’s statement and fails to satisfy ANet’s ‘core philosophy’.

Can get =/= will get. You can get a precursor from a random drop. This does not mean you will get a precursor from a random drop.

The statement is satisfied. You can get top gear by playing whatever game mode you want to play.

The statement is not reliant upon your personal success in acquiring it. That’s like saying that you can’t get 5,000 gold because some people haven’t.

I was saying that a very rare change, is not an adequate excuse (reading comprehension ftw). You can play semantics all you like but if you play through to the day the servers shut down and never get a drop even though you played at least 5 hours a day (on average) then clearly you could not (you know the opposite of ‘can’) get it.

Can doesn’t equal will only in the current situation where you can get it if you go out of your way (read “out side your playstyle”).

All they have to do is remove the account bound restriction on crafted ascended. Now everybody’s playstyle can get them the gear because everybody’s playstyle will earn them gold.

In WvW I earn plenty of gold
World Boss train, plenty of gold
Market trading
General PvE
Fractals
Dungeons

That just leaves PvP

Do . . . do we really need another Best in Slot item largely agreed to be available through direct gold purchase only? I mean, we already have Legendary weapons and we know how that turned out.

I think craftable Ascended is fine . . . especially right now since there seems to be half a ton of cloth material coming out of my Wintersday Gifts. (Not as much Silk, but that’s what salvaging is for.)

If there’s a tweak needed to the crafting of Ascended? It lies in easing off that Silk problematic spot.

I was saying that a very rare change, is not an adequate excuse (reading comprehension ftw).

Whether you choose to make this stipulation on your own does not have any bearing on fact.

Statement: You can acquire the best gear in the game no matter which playstyle you prefer, WvW, PvE, or PvP.

Fact: Ascended gear is the best gear stat-wise.
Fact: Ascended gear drops in WvW, PvE, and apparently can be obtained through PvP as well.

Conclusion: Ascended gear is acquirable through all portions of the game.

Statement is factually correct.

Your subjective stipulations are irrelevant, just as it is irrelevant how people choose to take “play how you want” to mean anything more than what the statement says.

thank you , you stated this so much better than i could have , thanks for taking the time

my little rant follows

i just played for 3 hours and 45 minutes , and made 0% progress on any of the dailies .

i also , find the walk to the green star and press F style of play does not make me feel rewarded compared to using my brains and finding a solution my self .

the book “hunt” &“cypher” in the library is a great example . i didn’t have to think at all . theres a giant green star. i didn’t have to care what the pass word was i could keep guessing til i got the first half of the cypher .
it was nice of the librarian to mention how the books were organized on the shelves so i could get the second half but it didn’t matter. theres a giant green star in the exact spot where i need to press F . . .

its not even play really . its i dono connect the dots ? paint by numbers ?

anyways , Lishtenbird , thanks again for helping be my voice .

For some ‘playstyles’, the only way to fill up all 12 slots being through drops means you are better off winning the lottery more than once. Considering many people (most) who play on a regular basis never actually win throughout their entire lives, it’s safe to say that it’s impossible. I can guarantee that all the people who are in full ascended now have all funneled into a single (maybe double) playstyle.

Can =/= did.
Can’t =/= didn’t.

Every person has an equal chance of obtaining the items. There is no factual way for someone to be unable to get them. Personal luck is irrelevant. I have not gotten a precursor drop. That does not mean I cannot get them. It just means I have not.

For some ‘playstyles’, the only way to fill up all 12 slots being through drops means you are better off winning the lottery more than once.

And that’s your personal choice. If you choose to not craft the ascended, the guaranteed and easier way, then you reap what you sow. However, this does not negate the fact that you could obtain ascended equipment through drops. You also can obtain ascended rings, necklaces, and accessories through laurels, which are guaranteed if you play actively now, no matter what you do!

We all know where this thread is going. Just give us all the legendaries we want for free please.

I don’t mean giving everyone a free legendary, but the reasoning behind it.

People are used to getting X rewards “for free” (not quite true, but I’ll allow them to bend the facts a bit :P ). Of those, AP is no longer included in the free rewards, though the others have been increased.

Now, why is free AP an issue? Because every Y achievement points, you get something for it.

So, one of two things could happen:

  • Add AP to log-in rewards.
  • Remove daily AP entirely and change the AP values required for the chests to be attainable from fixed rewards only.

Can you imagine there is something YOU like to do that another person doesn’t?
Can you imagine there is something another person likes doing that YOU don’t?
If you can then you must see that dailies cannot please everyone all the time.

But…. they actually can. If they’d stop reducing the number of dailies for artificial reasons, there are plenty of things to please everyone, or at least most of everyone.

Dailies are themselves artificial. They exist to offer incentives for stepping outside of one’s norm.

And no they can’t. There is nothing that can be done that will, “please everyone all of the time,” as the person you quoted said.

….yes, and I acknowledged this by saying “most of everyone.”

The whole game is artificial, by that reasoning. Nice cherry-picking of my overall point.

Within the context of the game dailies are artificial.

I didnt cherry pick. You said specifically that they can please everyone all of the time.

Looks like Guhracie said, most of everyone, twice? Hmm. Maybe you mistyped?

So, one of two things could happen:

  • Add AP to log-in rewards.
  • Remove daily AP entirely and change the AP values required for the chests to be attainable from fixed rewards only.

I don’t think making things easier to attain is a path we really want to keep going down. I mean, sure, it’d make people happy to be basically shoveled free stuff . . . but would it really fix the problem in the first place?

Really what needs to happen is for a long hard look at what the whole of the game is like right now, as opposed to simply looking at specific systems separated from the game. Because this year we’ve seen major attempts to overhaul parts of the game, but on a whole these parts don’t quite match up with the whole.

Traits, which held an interesting idea, wound up not fitting anymore due to how it drags new characters through the unlock process rather than new players. A rather major issue for veterans, who just don’t want to go through all the hoops now in place . . . and newer players have a lot of work to pick up traits which were free a year ago.

NPE, which smoothed out some of the opening levels and tried to make it more accessible . . . wound up making a bunch of veterans again ticked off over how it throttles certain parts of the game. Overall, it’s not terrible, but it shook up a lot of things and changed how the early game plays out.

Megaservers, a system intended to . . . and actually providing . . . better zone population in areas which don’t see much activity or at way off-peak times. At the cost of pretty much blending out local server populations (or the sense of them) concerning WvW and other things.

And now this, the . . . third? . . . reorganization and revision of the Daily/Monthly system. A system which was adequate before it was tinkered with two months after release . . . now is pretty much reduced to nothing much at all. Now I wouldn’t have a problem with this except of the backlash which has started. Again. I’m probably not the only one who thinks it would have been more painless to simply abolish the whole system when Laurels were conceived and find another way. (Note, it’s only after Laurels got introduced there was a minor point in how it was important to partake in going for the Dailies.)

What we’ve seen changed this year is not meshing well and is not really meeting the rest of the game all that well. And the CDIs were talking about raids and GvG? At this point, those things should go back-burner more than they already were and focus spent on trying to take a good long look at the whole game again with fresh eyes.

I don’t think making things easier to attain is a path we really want to keep going down. I mean, sure, it’d make people happy to be basically shoveled free stuff . . . but would it really fix the problem in the first place?

Oh, I wouldn’t want things to be overall easier. Rather I’d move the AP to somewhere where the AP-grinding weird people can still get it with as little effort as humanly possible, and then we can make more of the actual dailies.

Again, I don’t think this is a good idea because . . . “Press Start Achievements” are really a lack of understanding of what they could be, and what people expect these days. What they should be is a lot like . . . oh . . . “Flight of the Valkyries” from the newer X-Com (beat a mission with an all female squad). I mean there’s a big gulf between the achievements which are basically “Finish Chapter 5” and “Owned all 700 Pokemon in the same game cartridge”.

(Yes, I’ve almost got the latter one done.)

Free AP just feels “wrong” for a system called “Achievements”. I say if we’re going to divorce them from the daily system? Then don’t make them daily at all, don’t time-limit them, and cut that out completely in favor of more general achievements added over time.

. . . or adding new achievements to older content.

Irrelevant? Are you joking? That’s the most important part. Getting the thing you actually want, instead of some random item you will never use. I had 4 or 5 ascended chests with horrible stats, so I wanted to throw those away. I kept them for skins and I still need to learn crafting to craft the thing I want.
I feel like you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel here, trying to convince us that that’s the way things should be. By your logic, I can kill random mobs for 20 years hoping to drop every single precursor and still walk away with nothing. Is this possible? Sure. Is this acceptable? No.
A random chance at getting something you will probably not even want isn’t of the same value as making or gaining something you want.

The purpose of the daily system is to get people out into other areas of the game.

I hadn’t realised you were an ANet dev.

Players are not being forced to do daily achievements

If players want the AP, then yes, they must do three dailies. That is a requirement to satisfy a desire. Before, said desire could be satisfied in a much broader manner. people are expressing that they wish for these broad choices to return. This is called constructive criticism and something a game developer should welcome.

Also, please don’t do the whole “well the game is optional” statement as it’s not an argument and doesn’t change the fact that the daily achievements are optional.

It is very much an argument and I’ll use it if I like. You don’t get to decide what I say, sorry. The game being an optional thing is quite the important factor as because if ANet’s taking choices away and causing the game to feel more like a chore for people to complete dailies as they used to, it could lead to people making other choices about the game, such as not playing. To tell people what they don’t need or aren’t required in your perception for their fun is entirely unhelpful.

Players can still play the game how they want like before. I’m starting to think that players do not understand what “play how they want” really means and instead think it means “reward me how I want”.

There you go again with that argument. Trying to equate something that isn’t equal. People aren’t asking to get rewards from chatting or a precursor upon login. They’re asking to have broad dailies, to view a vista anywhere for example. It’s called a compromise. But you’d rather make people out to be worse than that as usual. It’s tiresome.

Even more agreed. Seriously. If I go back to Extra Credits and their three types of achievements, I’d remove #1 entirely. No automated/grind achievements. Period.

My “solution” was based on the fact that the whole daily-login-rewards are a trade-off to be able to implement a better daily system without the players ragequitting over no longer getting their rewards for essentially picking their nose while standing around.
They forgot to add AP to it though, hence the whole current discussion.

Yes, the ideal solution:

  • Removes AP from dailies. Entirely.
  • Removes all automated achievements like “Reach level X”.
  • Removes all grind-based achievements like “Kill 500 Centaurs” or “Salvage X items”.
  • Removes a lot of the remaining achievements.
  • Adds new ones to be rewarded upon doing something optional while doing existent content or engaging existent elements. Examples are to kill all chickens in the Human Fractal or most collections giving another item of the type which is already collected.
  • Adds new ones to be rewarded if you do something out of your way. Maybe do a specific jumping puzzle without using any movement inducing skill, teleport, portal or swiftness (needs an item to block external swiftness). Or to do a dungeon without ever using a melee weapon by anyone in the party. Etc.
The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

Irrelevant?

Yes, irrelevant. The claim was that you can only get ascended gear by crafting. That is factually incorrect. Whether or not you personally have had any luck getting what you want through random drops is irrelevant. I personally have gotten a couple useful ascended rings from random WvW rewards.

I feel like you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel here, trying to convince us that that’s the way things should be.

I feel like you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel here, trying to assert arguments upon me that I didn’t say. Care to point out to me where I said that it’s how it should be, as opposed to “This is how it is, and you’re wrong for saying it isn’t like this”?

A random chance at getting something you will probably not even want isn’t of the same value as making or gaining something you want.

Correct. And it’s your choice whether or not to craft it. Crafting is easier and more reliable. If you choose to not craft it, you can still acquire it through your own play style, although you may take longer.

However, if you choose the latter, then clearly ascended equipment is not important to you, so it’s irrelevant how long it may or may not take you.

The game is not “broken” and not “stopping you from playing your way” by having a faster and more reliable option, because it is not the game’s fault that you choose to ignore that option.

Getting Ascended Armor and Weapons via drops is not a realistic means of acquiring them. In fact, as a secondary means of getting this gear, it’s a kittening joke.

Doesn’t however change the fact that you CAN get them from there. My post was about people claiming that you COULD only get it from crafting, which is clearly factually incorrect, despite how low drop rate there is in the other places.

You’re splitting a hair that was already mighty thin to begin with. Feel justified all you like. You are correct on the letter of the matter, but they are correct in the spirit.

I’m sorry but the way you look at things is ridiculous. They gave us “two” options, both are equally bad, both require a lot of grinding(be it gold or monster loot). Giving us a fake way to do things doesn’t exactly count as “playing how you want”. By the same logic, if they gave us an option to either pay for gems with money, or get one for each time they slap us in the face, you would be content with it. Why? Because the option exists, even if no one will ever go for it because of how painful and time consuming it is. You’re right.

Filaha is just completely out of touch with reality. They continue to hold onto “can =/= will” even after I showed that depending on drops with such a low drop rate means that many can’t and therefore won’t.

@Filaha;

“Choice” is irrelevant. We’re discussing playstyles. Of course there is nothing stopping someone from taking on a different playstyle. I can’t stand crafting, yet I chose to do it just so I can get the gear. Such is not the point. The thread is about how the “play how you want to play” is out the window.

It’s completely unreasonable that those who choose one style of play (ie WvW) have to rely on drops while another (ie Crafting) can guarantee getting what you want.

Wait, WvW doesn’t get drops which can be used for crafting? I mean, I know PvP doesn’t (and don’t necessarily need it with their gear set already) . . .

I look at things objectively. You look at things subjectively. And objectively, you can acquire “the best gear” by playing how you want. If you choose to not do the faster way, that does not negate the fact that you can acquire them through other methods.

And again, ascended rings/accessories/necklaces are not random drops, and are acquired through laurels, which are acquired by “playing how you want”, especially now, where it doesn’t even matter if you complete achievements. More of the top gear available without having to go out of your way in the game for one second!

Filaha is just completely out of touch with reality.

You’re out of touch with fact.

They continue to hold onto “can =/= will” even after I showed that depending on drops with such a low drop rate means that many can’t and therefore won’t.

I know a lot of people who have not won the lottery and probably will not. That does not mean they can’t. They factually mean two different things. I continue to hold on to it, because I’m looking at it objectively.

“Choice” is irrelevant. We’re discussing playstyles. Of course there is nothing stopping someone from taking on a different playstyle. It’s completely unreasonable that those who choose one style of play (ie WvW) have to rely on drops while another (ie Crafting) can guarantee getting what you want.

People who choose to only play WvW for drops for their ascended gear are actively choosing to ignore the easier, faster method. This is not the game’s fault. It is not unreasonable. There will always be an objectively easier way to do something in the game than other ways. Choosing to take the harder path isn’t unreasonable on the game’s part, nor is it bad design or removing the choice of how you want to play. It is your choice.

And how is choice irrelevant when talking about “Playing how you want”? Playing how you want is choice.

Umm, if they don’t despite their best efforts of trying, then no they can’t.

Because we are comparing playstyles and simply saying that it’s their choice not to go with the optimal way only exemplifies the existence of the problem.

Nope, that’s not what can’t means.

They can buy a ticket.
They can pick numbers.
The numbers can be correct.
They can win. They have the possibility of winning.

Whether they do or not is irrelevant to their possibility of winning.

If I flip a fair coin, that coin can land heads or tails. Whether it lands heads or tails is irrelevant to its ability to have either outcome.

Because we are comparing playstyles and simply saying that it’s their choice not to go with the optimal way only exemplifies the existence of the problem.

No it doesn’t. As I said, there will always be an optimal way of doing things. You can always choose to not do it, but that doesn’t mean it should be equally easy for you.

I’m looking at things realistically. Because I realise that if people want to get their ascended armour by doing jumping puzzles, discovering the world and/or participating in events – they should. What I think they shouldn’t do, is grinding day after day to get gold, or drops from random monsters.
They can do that, but as I’ve mentioned. Getting one bad choice over another bad choice isn’t a choice at all.

They have the possibility yes but whether or not they can is yet to be determined. Whether or not you “can” requires taking the outcome into consideration.

Can:

1. To be able to;
2. Be permitted to.

So unless you are able to get it that way, you can’t. Whether or not you are able to, requires you to know the outcome. I know if I work on my crafting I can craft what I want because I know what the outcome will be. It’s foreseeable. I’m able to craft what I need. I can’t say I’m able to obtain what I want via drops. Only on the day the servers go down and I either obtained it or not via drops can I say I can or can’t. The outcome is not foreseeable.

For crafting you can craft what you want with a guaranteed success rate.
For relying on drops, there is no guarantee of success. Not only is there no guarantee but with the odds so low, most never will and therefore can’t just as most people who play the lottery will never win and therefore can’t.

Honestly, I can’t speak for everyone else, but I have next to no Ascended stuff…and that’s pretty much okay with me.
What is NOT okay with me is that I -used- to be able to play the way that I wanted, with who I wanted, and that has since changed. I am an RPer. Not a lore-junkie satisfied with the (admittedly improved) Living Story lore; not a PvE zerg/grinder. The implementation of megaservers destroyed all ability to play with a familiar community in favor of maps populated with larger numbers of complete strangers. All protests along this line have been soundly ignored.
THAT is why I, for one, truly cannot play how I want.

If you want to play with a familiar community, have a guild and add people to your friends list. Even with megaservers, you are more likely to be put on a map with someone you have a link to than random people.

You have the ability to form friendships with anybody you want and play with whoever you want. The game does not need to make that automatic for you.
