yeah I dont get the hatred either, seriously since this game doesn’t have a sub, lots of people who enjoy the game are going to buy it anyway. Now they at least get a chance to look at it before purchase.
the only difference between a f2p and core game owner is a 20€-$25 purchase. Its not a big deal =(
well..i mainly play pvp…and there the mapchat is usually toxic ^^ maybe this explains it….when i was in queensdale today..there was even a party to welcome new player was really cute and lovely + sooo much fun
Oh, PvP map chat was toxic? Well, that’s pretty much a given. I never read the PvP chat anymore for that reason.

The timing was fun too … I just started leveling a necro Friday. This meant I had a bit of a head start on FTPs (especially her being my 7th character so I knew the fastest way to do things) but was struggling with starter areas at the same time they were.
Well what if someone doesnt welcome them/like them here? Let them be as toxic with them as they want, untill its still following the rules, stop protecting and whine about f2p restrictions, it really starts to get annoying
I really don’t get why you’re so hostile towards f2p players. Take your problems to Anet; it was their decision to do it. Leave the players out of it, unless they start acting hostile. Stop acting like a toddler.
Entitlement is a serious issue here, it seems. After reading just a few pages of this thread I can’t help feeling cynical and question the integrity of most of the people posting here. How selfish can you people be? Thousands of hours of gameplay for a price of $10 to even $100+ over the last few years (including content f2p users will never see) and you still think you’re being cheated, or worse, that ANet owes you something? I can’t even fathom it. Price cuts happen all the time. You don’t hear massive outcry when a game goes on sale for $1, but the second it’s FREE but heavily restricted it’s a crime? That’s nonsense.
Free to play is not taking anything away from what you purchased. You are losing nothing and the free accounts still do not have all of the access that paid accounts do so this should be a non-issue.
As a side note (although one that is still very much related): I think one of the worst parts of this whole thing is just the general ignorance of the gaming community at large as in the past f2p switches usually only occur with games that are circling the drain. It’s sad to see a lot of gamers that don’t play the game take this as a signal of defeat from GW2. >.>
The thingh is that we didn’t buy only the game but also we contract a service (every mmo is a service) and here is the problem in the moment we bought the game the say to us that the game was b2p but now is a f2p.

I’m feeling a little screwed-over, here. I paid for this game. I was happy to. I’m even glad that others are getting in for free. Maybe now I can get my fiancee to play with me. This is all well and good.
But I should get something for having bought the game in the first place. Maybe not even the expansion (I wish), but something.

You did. You got the game three years before anybody picking up a (rather heavily restricted) version for “free.”
If you don’t get that the perceived value of something drops over time outside of a handful of rare exceptions, there’s little further discussion that could be had that would placate you.
No restrictions ? Is that not enoughs ? Also 3 more characterslots that alone
are worth 30 bucks. Also daily loging rewards are worth quite some money
if you buy T6 mats from laurels and change them to gems.
EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.

A huge part of the problem is there are still things yet unresolved, the biggest being the TP. As much as I enjoy helping new players I do not want prices in the TP to crash where it is not worth harvesting/farming/crafting. So what you are probably seeing is people reacting out of those concerns.
Bots and gold sellers are not an immediate concern. If they start to be a problem that will be a different story.
You got to enjoy GW2 for a length of time (imagine starting with a blank account now – which you can do btw), your fiance is going to be able to play with you for no cost, smile.
The issue is that laurels can be turned into gold.
This concerns me. I’ve never been one to jump on the elitist bandwagon when it comes to F2P vs. Paid debate but the fact that Joe Smith from Botsvilia can create 1000 accounts and just camp in for the daily rewards as a form of revenue generation could have an effect on market prices.
This game is basically a F2P model anyways with micro transactions being the main form of revenue but removing the initial $10 to $50 cost per account would open the door to problems we cannot predict.
Daily login rewards are disabled on free accounts.
I will say, however, that I don’t feel screwed over. I got to play the game for three years (without any account restrictions), including getting to play LS 1 and LS 2 (without having to buy episodes). I also got nifty loyalty items throughout those three years, including rewards for buying gems, birthday gifts, and (most recently) an outfit for those of us who bought the game before yesterday.

You have no restrictions on mailing items to other characters
You can access WvW without a level 60+ character no your account
You can use map chat
You can leave the starter maps before level 10

You can use LFG before level 30
You can use more PvP chat modes other than squad chat
You can chat in the PvP lobby before level 20
You get daily login rewards
You can use the Gem-to-Gold exchange
You can trade more things on the trading post
You can post on the forums

And your service is still valid, you bought the service to play the game forever without paying again and that’s what you got, that never changed.

Eh, you ever dealt with Turbine? I’ve been playing DDO a while, and am used to getting screwed. It’s safer to assume that unless people specifically say otherwise, I’m getting a bad deal.

Yeah, and the funny thing is – all of those had another business model and then went free to play when they failed, and failed hard.
What do you think is the reason for GW2 ito go free to play, then? Because if every single example you have went free to play when they failed and now GW2 is going free to play, well… I wonder when the layoffs will begin.

How do you know they were F2p and not just the normal ones that you get anyways. Also don’t let one bad apple pollute to the many, many good players that have been seen so far.

My point is that it is now that much easier for goldsellers to create free throwaway accounts that they then use to send their spam whispers. Until yesterday, I could count on the fingers of one hand how many spam whispers I’ve gotten since GW2 release. In the space of 15 minutes I got two yesterday. Draw your own conclusions.
I was spammed 5 times in under 2 minutes in Lion’s Arch, reported and blocked each one. This is going to get tiring. ANet needs to implement an option to block whispers from free players.
I haven’t been whispered at all, and i’ve been in queensdale and DR a lot today.
RMT spam seems like random chance to me, based on prior experiences. I’d go weeks without any then get 2-3 in a row, That said, I spent almost two hours gearing up in LA yesterday and then some time in QDale. The only impact I saw was that there were more people in Qdale and one guy said, “Hi, fellow F2P players,” in Say chat near Mepi’s Moa Farm. Not finding the negatives so far.

Funny, the first day i logged back in after a really long break(last week), into LA, i got spammed by 5 different gold selling bots. Every day i go to LA, or DR, i pretty much get hit by them if i stay for very long. Heck even the BC has them. I havent honestly seen an increase, in one day since this has started. Lets just see how it plays out over very long.
The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

They can only send a whisper to mutual friends. Meaning you would have to add the gold spammer(s) to your friends list and you would have to be on theirs. Then it would be every 30sec.

They can only send a whisper to mutual friends. Meaning you would have to add the gold spammer(s) to your friends list and you would have to be on theirs. Then it would be every 30sec.
No, they can send whispers to anyone (within same map apparently), with a 30s limit on starting conversations.
Mutual friends have no restriction on whisper.

I have a friend that had recently bought the game only for it to be announced that the base game was going to be free with HOT purchase and that now the base game is free regardless. What was the point of him paying $40? Now he won’t even touch the game after all this. I could personally see playing the game if I at least got HOT for $30 but $60 is just stupid considering how much bullkitten went on for 3 years and that I still regret having ever pre-purchased this game myself.

Yes, they would. Before there is a barrier to entry though, no matter how small. If I had no strong feelings about it why should I buy it?
For example, I am a vegan, why on earth would I waste my money to buy meat at the grocery store. To watch it rot?
Now there is no such barrier to the game. Theoretically everyone with a computer and a fast enough connection could get an account.
