Still as said there is no benefit to wear outfit that show that you paid for game or be able to join pvp or other things depending on level. You will get max level anyway. These are not significant to game play or not at all.

This is truly the entitled generation isn’kitten

What answer exactly are you hoping for? Do you think Anet is going to reach out to you and offer you a refund on a 3 year old game? Do you think Anet should come over to your house and coo softly in your ear till you fall asleep?

I’m just wondering what exactly it is you’re looking for here? What could possibly be a satisfactory answer to someone posting a question like this? The game is over 3 years old.

Maybe Steam should refund me for the 150+ games I’ve never touched on my steam account? OR maybe that’s on me for buying games I didn’t end up playing? I’ll guess the later using my extreme powers of logic and reasoning.

The games you play and pay once for like Hitman, Assassins creed, etc. you play the story, end the game, enjoy (or dont touch at all). Thats it. This game is online MMO like WoW where people can play to infinity and beyond, this game still have the price like other games on your steam. That games never go free. Ye maybe for less like posts above. WoW is the thing, game time cost the same all the time and you have to even pay more for the actual game.

WOW costs 15$ a month buddy. I don’t know where you’re getting that idea from that WOW is free.

Let’s pull a calculator…..15$ a month X 36 months (3 years) = 540$

WOW is a great game. Enjoy.

Not to mention that WOW gives you all the old content for FREE. I haven’t played WOW since vanilla yet I own on my Blizzard account every WOW expansion except for the latest one from last year.

There’s that too.

Well not speaking only WoW which have different politic of paying.
Lineage 2 was released 2003 and finaly at end of year 2011 they decided to give it free. Thats good reason considering how old the game is. GW2 is still in demand or old to go to that state.

I will ask again. What answer are you hoping for from ANET? What exactly is it you want? Because I see no satisfactory answer to someone who thinks they’re owed something after they made the CHOICE to spend 60$ of their own money.

You could just take personal responsibility on your own spending habits? Maybe you shouldnt have bought the game 3 years ago? Hmm?

It’s not really fully free to play, with the restrictions in place. I wouldn’t give up the $60 I paid THREE YEARS ago to play a f2p “trial” version of this game. Anyway, you ask what previous purchasers get in return for this change… well, an outfit for one, but more importantly – a larger playerbase!

I am expecting to ANET make the game less accessable for F2P players as I said:

Trial would be nice F2P players get only max level 20 only few crafting abilities no bank no benefits. So the point of F2P would be:
“Here check our awesome game, you can see how epic it is during this time and then you can support us by buying it and enjoy full experience of this great world”
Still its only one time payment. Not like WoW which is Pay to Play.

Why would you want that?
In the end it benefits all the players, since more people around the map, more money for ANet in the long run, more/better quality content for you.

LESS (no none) younger players, because you have to pay. You can see the communities in other games. There are more mature people in games that can play and know what are they doing. free players are at free servers and you can also see the quality of that servers.

Ugh this logic again. You bought a game three years ago, have had access to the game for the last 3 years, and still do for that one time purchase. You got what you paid for and still do.

I feel like the people who have been and are making this argument that they are owed money now have the mindset of a small child to not understand what is happening or why.

Even dumber is the expectation that they make the free players time in game less likely to encourage them to buy the game. Give them the core game, the restrictions on anti-gold spammers is just fine, let them play then decide to pay or not.

A game without fresh blood continually replacing those that need to leave or want to leave is vital if the game is to be something worth playing long term.

Its safe to say I think that the buy to play model as the main form of financing game development didn’t go as planned, I expected as much since its not cheap to continually develop a live mmorpg without constant money flowing in. I’m actually shocked it took them three years to get kitten (I typed fifty dollars in numbers with a dollar sign not sure the censorship on that is needed) expansion out, and not making the base game free to add more fresh blood when the expansion was open for preorder would have been a very stupid move.

I’m sorry so many people are ignorant to what a business is and how they work, I blame the school systems tbh that this thread actually exists. Don’t mean to sound condescending but there seems to be a growing trend in society to expect high compensation for work you do yet expect others to “not be greedy” and not try to make money when your benefitting from the service.

Hi,
I was playing GW2 when it was released for about a year and then left because I had no time during my work to play and started play casual games. But today I get info about GW2 that its F2P game. OK i get it, company is not getting players and want expand comunity. I think it was fine to pay once for game I like to support it and play it, now they probalby also get money they wanted raise from game so why bother. The thing of my topic is, how players which bought normal or exlusive (or collectible, don’t know the name for it, its long time) for about 60 dolars benefit from it or do you refund everyone who paid for it? Because f2p acokittens have same content and you can’t lock them content to access. Post topics fo official forum is really not good benefit or restriction to those players. So whats the solution or compensation to players which paid for game? Thanks for any constructive answer and people who actualy read it insted of insta hate.
P.S.: sory if i put it in wrong discusion because couldn’t find another general topic.

So, you played the game for about a year, then shelved it. Your purchase could have given you 3+ years play up to this point. That you put it aside due to RL concerns means that you did not get as much entertainment as was available to you. While regrettable, things like that happen and that is hardly ANet’s issue — it’s a choice you made because of your circumstances.

Face it, though. Games age and become cheaper over time. Those with alternative means of generating revenue — and GW2 has both an incoming expansion pack and a store — go on sale cheap or go free to play.

How much did you play in the first year? The base game at launch was $60 American. If you spent more on collector’s or deluxe or whatever — well, that was also your choice. However, the value of the game needs to be looked at based on the minimum cost for full access. How many other $60 games offer 3 year’s worth of play at no added cost? How many even offer 1 year — which is more apropos to your situation?

The opportunity existed for you to have gotten way more than your money’s worth. That you did not take full advantage of it does not mean you’re owed anything.

Except the people who paid for the game get way more than the free to play players do. We get 5 character slots with the ability to add more; free players get 2. We can use Map Chat and don’t have our whispers restricted to one new person every 30 seconds. We can enter wvw anytime we want, without having to wait until level 60. We aren’t forced to stay inside starter zones until level 10. We can do pvp at any level. Our use of the TP isn’t restricted. Our use of guild banks isn’t restricted.

On top of that, those of us who actually played the game got three years of game play, including LS1 and LS2 and the festivals and one-time-events. So yeah. As someone who’s been playing since beta, I don’t see what the big cry fest some people keep having is about.

You paid for up to 3 years of entertainment. You only “used” 1, but how is that anyone’s look-out but yours? Your purchase still gets you unfettered access to the core game. ANet has moved on to Heart of Thorns, now, and are trying to lure new players to pay for that as well as drop money on gems. It’s business. You’re not entitled to anything but what was offered when GW2 went on sale.

Completely disagree. It would cost them $80 just to get the same amount of character and bag slots as a paid account. Plus the restrictions on what they can buy and sell from the TP, restrictions on using the chat channels, guild bank restrictions. These alone are pretty big restrictions.

The restrictions for F2P players are significant. I just started playing after F2P and within a day I bought the core GW2 game to get rid of those restrictions.
I still have another free account and after playing the paid version for a week, went back and tried the free account.

1. Only 2 character slots
2. Only 3 bag slots
3. Extremely limited set of items you can purchase from the TP.
4. Same limited set of items that you can sell so forget making any money selling off your extra drops.
5. No mailing of gold or items, ever.
6. You can’t even enter a city until level 10
7. You can’t enter Lions Arch or use Asura gates until level 35
8. No WvW until level 35 I believe
9. No daily login rewards
10. No /map chat
11. No forum posting
12. and the list goes on…

So yea, you can play for free and eventually see all of the same content, but you will do it mostly while broke and with substandard gear.

I’m amazed at people who think they are owed something because they bought the game three years ago and now people can play a limited version for free. They are overlooking the benefits of having free players around:

  • Free players are more players in the world for you to interact with, make friends with, add to your guild, etc.
  • Free players may buy HoT if they like what they see, which is income for Anet. Income = good, as the more income Anet has, the more they will be able to spend on the game in the future (it’s simple math, folks).
  • Free players are massively restricted compared to people who paid for the game.

The logic is weird. My niece bought the game for $10 when it was on sale. Does Anet owe me $50, being as I paid $60 back in mid 2012? Nope. The benefit is that my niece can now adventure with me. And other people. And spend her money on gems.

In the last three years, I have taken about six months off from the game. So, I’ve played pretty regularly for 2 1/2 years. I started with the 3-day headstart. My wife is the same (same amount of time off, also started the same day).

That was $120 out of our pockets. We have both played 2 1/2 years worth of GW2, so 2 1/2 × 2 accounts is 5 years of play time. In 5 play years, you have 60 months. $120 / 60 months is $2 a month or $1 per account per month (not counting gems we have bought from time to time).

Compared to WoW, which is $14.99 a month, I don’t think Anet owes me a dime. I probably owe them money at this point, as I’ve been having far too much fun in my time here. That’s precisely why I still buy gems sometimes. Compared to other MMOs, it’s a savings. And I’d rather play this game anyway.

Well, I’d like to thank ANet for doing the F2P (to me its more like an extended trial). In my experience from these type of F2P accounts, people either play for a while then stop, or like me buy the game.

As an existing GW1 play that bought GW, Factions and Nightfall, I loved that game. When GW2 came out I had been seduced to the Darkside, and was playing Battlefield and WoW…

When I heard it had a F2P I jumped at the chance to give it a go.. And I’m glad i did.. Within the Week I had upgraded and purchased HoT..

A Number of my old GW1 friends have since heard me going on about how good GW2 is, also took up the F2P option, and have also since took purchased HOT.

So that’s at least 7 new paid for accounts from a weeks F2P..

Cheers ANet.. It’s appreciated here at least…

You are indeed missing something. The game hasn’t done that. They did a huge announcement that they were making the core game free, and then did it, but with huge restrictions.

Free players can’t really trade or chat, they get fewer character slots, less bag space.

There is no subscription. It is still buy to play if you want the full game experience. You’re not “winning” if you buy the game, you just aren’t getting the full game if you don’t buy it.

The account restrictions serve not only to encourage free players to buy the game, it is largely designed around preventing gold seller abuse/spam.

There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon

How is a subscription pay to win? And the game doesn’t even have a subscription. You can just play the game for free now, with some limitations

well you could always PLAY the game for free, getting the game was a different story.

Glad to see you can at least get the core game without forking over your first born. Though i’ve never agreed with applying account restrictions.

I do like a lot of the changes i’m reading about though.

Forking over your firstborn, that equates to about £40 right? and sometimes as little as $10 on sale.
Just pretend the free to play accounts are like a trial version of most other games except this isn’t just one level and doesnt expire. It’s a great way to introduce new players to GW2 nothing more. Lots will buy it on the strength of that and others wont and perhaps others still will be happy with just the free account.

“Free to play” is industry jargon for, “Sure, you can play for free, but if you want to progress, it’ll COST YA! HARHARHAR!”

However, GW2 is “Buy to play” meaning you have to buy the game, in order to play it, except for the core game…cause that free to play…EITHER WAY, they still want all your money, so please start droppin them fat stacks of cash in the gem store! And remember kids, never, ever ask or want for more, because the gem store delivers us all!

So your firstborn is worth less than a single payment of $50?

They prefer to use the term “Play for Free”. But to unlock the restrictions it’s still “Buy to Play”.
