I dont actually care about ftp. I do want to make the point that gold sellers have other accounts also so what they will do is simply use free accounts to position bots in strategic places and spam people with advertisements. They will actually send the gold from their other accounts.

+1 to this being a great change, especially as someone who has been playing multiple accounts (all bought at orig price) since launch. 3 years of server maintenance + updates is more than enough of a reward for me in exchange for paying that $50.

That said I hope the devs are watching how this works in wvw carefully, I dont play it more than a few hours a month but that seems the game mode that can be most screwed up by free accounts.

They can send a whisper to a different player every 30 seconds…with a boatload of free accounts that can potentially make for a lot of messages. Just sayin’.

They can only send a whisper to mutual friends. Meaning you would have to add the gold spammer(s) to your friends list and you would have to be on theirs. Then it would be every 30sec.

No, they can send whispers to anyone (within same map apparently), with a 30s limit on starting conversations.

Mutual friends have no restriction on whisper.

Help is relative. I dropped a bobblehead lab in front of the Queensdale entrance point for new players and shot cake at them. This was in the wee hours of the morning US so I probably catching EU players on NA servers waking up and Oceania players before bed.

All I saw in starting maps was “Welcome” spam and huge amount of people + cakes + guild consumables. Fps drops all over the place and annoying chat spam combined with particle spam is kinda weird way of welcoming new players.

Free players can’t access custom arenas until rank 20+ which is impossible to have reach at this point, so yeah…

WvW fear mongers are forgetting that server limits are still in place. F2P players simply can’t get on top tier servers. At least for now. Where’s the fun griefing some 3rd tier server with a flood of AFK F2P players? or spying (like that’s not done already today)?

Now all of a sudden you throw it back at every loyal player by making the game f2p opening it up to scum bots, goldsellers, and abusive little kids just like WoW is full of.

The current community are incredible and EVERY person that I’ve met on GW2 since I started playing has been amazing with answering my questions, offering to show me around parts of the map, teach me about crafting etc.

I absolutely love this game because it has a community like no other game that I’ve ever played.

In the last week alone I’ve spent over £200 on the expansion and in-game content with you guys but since finding out about the direction that you’re taking the game…….it’s gutting

I have a friend that had recently bought the game only for it to be announced that the base game was going to be free with HOT purchase and that now the base game is free regardless. What was the point of him paying $40? Now he won’t even touch the game after all this. I could personally see playing the game if I at least got HOT for $30 but $60 is just stupid considering how much bullkitten went on for 3 years and that I still regret having ever pre-purchased this game myself.

How recently did he purchase the core game, or did he prepurchase HoT? If it was within a short time of the FTP announcement, and it doesn’t already have the HoT pre-order attached, he might be able to work something out with Anet CS.

The original base game is still for sale. I just checked Amazon and there are plenty of copies. If I buy one and use the code now, post-F2P, what does that do?

More importantly, how long will those codes remain valid? I’d be very interested in stashing a couple away now so that in several years I could use them to have a full-service base game account without having any of the expansions.

HoT only goes free to play when the next expac is released as anet has stated that all new expacs will come free with the previous expacs plus the core game for $50. Hence HoT is $50 with the core game for free cus gw2 has no other expacs yet.

The F2P accounts are severely limited, even if you bought the game yesterday you’re still not getting hosed unless you enjoy an extremely limited experience and would prefer that. It’s all over the forums – F2P is limited, the base game as we know it is not free.

Negative Vision’s friend also needs to get over himself. You can get a refund for the base game if you buy HoT, last I knew, and if he’s not going to touch it because a very restricted, trial game version is available for free then he must not game much at all. “Oh no! I can buy Assassin’s Creed at Gamestop for $3! I paid $55 when it came out! RIOT! RIOT!!!!!”

Yes plz dont lump all vets into the same category. I for one dont care it went free to play. Payed for the game when it was in pre release and i have no regrets for the 3 odd years i spent playing the game. IMO i got my monies worth out of the game.

Did you read the restrictions the F2p accounts have. With all of though, how can they ruin the economy, and how does it effect you, who can freely still gain wealth unlike them?

I share the concerns, but it is limited to people on the same map. That won’t ‘solve’ the issue, but it has at least a few more restrictions on them. Of course if they have hundreds of accounts that’s a lot of people they can whisper. And they will do it. They have already been doing it.

But apart from free accounts able to receive wealth despite Dev statements that they cannot (they can, just cannot send it out), the wvw concern (which level 60 can be done quickly because gold/mats), and botting concern (which to clarify is that they can easily test their bots without having to buy copies of gw2, and only buy on those that succeed to move money, which again Anet can detect, track, and act on, but it’s still a valid concern. A lot of damage can be done before they are taken care of), the limits are fairly well done for free to play. Although, like many, was hoping it was more of a trial. Will get more people to check out gw2 though.

I just want to point out that before all these details came out about HOT he was hyped to get back into the franchise, I told him it was kitten compared to 1 and not worth bothering with because of the track record towards fixing issues ect. I also added in that the original dev team as far as I knew was completely gone. He just seemed upset that he spent money only to find out he could have gotten a better deal by waiting longer, I told him not to buy it, I told him to not expect anything but his optimism bit him where he could have looked at it negatively first and come out ahead. Ironic.

There is no Innocence only degrees of Guilt.

For a F2P player to get even close to the same benefits a player that buys the game or expansion has, they would have to..

- Buy three character expansion slots – $30
- Buy 4 bag slots (not even counting the other 3 characters)- $15

With just that they’re already sitting at $45, and they will have to spend $50 because there is no way for them to purchase $45 in gems.

and they still have all the other restrictions on top of that, so I don’t see how people feel f2p players are getting some big break, I guarantee some wont realize how much they’re spending, and will spend $20-30 before noticing it will be cheaper to just buy the expansion.

As a old customer we used to get the game, the service, 5 charcters slots, the ability to use all the funcion the game and all the mode of the game but now what we get that that a free player doesn’t get is the use of all the funcion of chat and traiding and 3 more characters slot the rest they can get it by playing and before you say that we have more time playing that them and that they lost some events, some veterans didn’t buy the game in the first year other didn’t play during some events or stop palying because they lost the interest in the game for some reason, and even the time argument could have been true if the game were still of paid.

This is for veteran players the players that start because is free have a better deal that the veteran since they can test the game to see if they liked

See the post above yours, the F2P players need to pay $45 to get what you already have, they can’t use gold to buy gems, so they can’t get that through gameplay. You still get a better deal than them.

I am hopeing gem prices will drop ater the birthday sales when people buy gems to trade in for gold.

Lol… masteries are the new weapons and trait lines/specializations available to all classes in the expansion. so if u dont get the expansion u wont have access to the new stuff… but still be able to play the core stuff and masteries are not hugely game breaking so people who dont invest in HoT shudnt have any issue playing against people who bought HoT and have access to the masteries

Hmm, I was under the impression that the mastery system referred to HoT content specific lateral progression such as glider mastery, exploration mastery, crafting mastery, and so on. I dont recall seeing reference to them having anything to do with new weapons, specializations, etc.

I made no comment about them being game breaking or anything of the sort. I merely answered koteda’s question about what they are.

Didn’t this argument burn out back in June? Guess not. Some people just have axes to grind.

If you don’t pay for the game, you have more money to spend on items in the store, sure… but those are the same items that people that DID pay for the game and/or expansion could NOT buy because they bought the game or pre-paid for the expansion. So yeah.

That’s a little irritating.

But irritating? I give I week max for f2p’s at lvl 80 getting lucky drops, cashing in and sporting legendaries that you and I have drooled over as we played 500-1500 hours of prepaid GW2 for 3 years without so much as a precursor…

That’s when the game will gradually go from a p2p base to a f2p pvp e-sport base ala LoL that is 99% entitlement with 0% investment. Even a $10 paygate kept GW2 mildly classy.

There is a difference between burning out and being swept under the rug. If you actually read the forum including this thread youll see that this is still very much an issue.

How do you buy something that is free?

Reading this forum and threaddoesnt show that this is an issue, it shows that some people have issues. There is a difference.

I will put it this way. If you buy the core game (which some of us did) then buy HoT the only thing you get for your money is HoT… If you never bought the core game but buy HoT you also get the core game which is an upgrade from the free version including the 5 character slots and bag slots etc. People who bought the core game 1st get treated like theyre getting a huge deal by getting 1 character slot added and thats it for the same price after already paying twice. Oh yeah the stupid outfit also.

Sounds terrible, a company providing me with what I paid for. I can totally see how people would be up in arms over getting what they paid for. Fiendish plot on Anet’s part to provide a product to people who pay for it. Better call the Avengers in on this one because its too big for the local police.

*big if as I have not as of yet seen anything that inclines me to buy the expansion.

Second of all I didn’t thrust my opinion on anyone. I didn’t say don’t buy the game or to agitate people by doing something of my liking. From where you got this idea I have no clue.

I guess a way to look at it also is this, if you were going to buy the game, you have by now. Nonthing really going to make it easy for new people to go, I should get this over this. So Anet giving them a water down, heavy restricted version, to try it. If they like it, they can upgrade to a pay account, if not, at least they try it, and know now for sure they wont buy it.
