RNG broken or is it just me
I’ve gotten two exotics, ever – on two consecutive days. Monday, exotic drop, Tuesday, exotic from the forge. Then nothing. RNG is… wait for it…
Random.
RNG is broken. I posted in the bug forum. My lvl 28 Guard was fighting lvl 32 Pirates/Moas and got two lvl 1 blue daggers. Obviously something is broken somewhere.
it’s just you. RNG stands for random number generation
Lol its RNG.
I ran SAB and got enough for 132 bauble bubbles; mostly from chest looting. (which means I opened atleast 40 chests) and got precisely zero skin drops.
My wife; ran it enough for 1 weapon, and got a GS skin drop and a shortbow skin drop.
such is life.
it’s just you. RNG stands for random number generation
I just wanted to say. There is no such thing as a true RNG. If someone plays a slot machine in Vegas. It is required by law to pay out a certain percentage over a 24hr period. It all a computer algorithm.
I bet if someone does the BLC close to the end of the servers daily reset. The odds may be higher based on if few skins have dropped earlier.
I have 4 fused weapons from some chests. I just opened 50 boxes, 0 tickets, 0 bags, 0 event boxes ^^
RNG seems to be working fine :P

That sounds about like my luck. One exotic, ever, that I can recall dropped outside a world boss and it was a level 60 something. Very occasionally a rare will drop. I depend on the world bosses for higher level loot
It’s because the RNG approach to rewards is inherently broken.
It’s because the RNG approach to rewards is inherently broken.
I cannot speculate about whether or not the RNG system is working as intended, but there is definitely a DR bug. For me, just a few minutes of killing mobs in Orr produces a streak of porous bone drops.
Honest question: If you started getting 3 exotics everyday and a ring every fractal run, would you make this post and say RNG is broken?

If i actually started to drop this when since release i probably got one exo drop every 2-3 months (i got 1 exo drops from the improved boss chests and i farmed them with 6 alts, all of them at least farmed rotbeard and centaur chests once per day and half or more the maw, there’s a reason i completly and utterly ignore them now unless i miraculously happen to be in the area when the event triggers), 3 sab skin out of 300+ chest, no will of doing the new dungeon because i know i won’t get anything out of it and 4 rings out of 30+ fractals then yes, i would still say it’s completly broken.
Then again, rng is rng. It’s just the design that is flawed to begin with.

I wear MF gear with rune of the noble and rune of the pirate on two different guys and they are not the ones that get the exotic drops. I didn’t think that MF gear worked on chest.

Slightly off-topic, but MF gear is a huge drain and shouldn’t be an aspect of the game.
A player running MF gear gives up a stat in order to increase their drop quality. So they are contributing the least, but gaining the most? Where is the sense in that?
I have no comment on RNG aspect of things, as RNG is just that … RNG. You can’t expect to get rings, this is why you get Pristine Fractal Relics. Do 20 dailies and buy your 2 rings. If you get either of the rings you desire in that time, great! If not, suck it up and stop complaining.
<— 1,500 hours and only recently got my first drop worth over 10g.

Yes, it is broken. The same people responsible for the low drop-rate (read: none) of Final Rest at launch.

The issue I’d say to that is it costs too much for 1 ring. It should be halved.

You won’t be saying that when you have over 100 in your bank with nothing to spend them on, because you already have multiples of all the good rings.
Don’t forget to level to 20+ and do that daily for another shot at the ring, another relic, and perhaps an infused ring or fractal weapon.

0.4% drop rate is bad RNG. That’s not even 1%…
Try a random number generator of your own with those odds. Now keep rolling until you succeed. See how long that takes you. Now multiply your time by 30 minutes per attempt.
Sounds a little insane to me.
The ‘Final Rest’ issue was clearly a bug and people got swept up in the intrigue of it being a hidden treasure to think logically on that one. The complaints with RNG in this game are misplaced IMO due to Anet’s failings in some aspects. Things like the fused tickets are inexplicable as they have shown they are willing to put items up with standard gem costs so I can’t get my head around their insistence to put stuff in those boxes in the manner they do.
More so I think if Anet really decided to dedicate some effort to grand scheme items, RNG would feel like less of an issue. For instance adding certain account-bound parts to unique items in particular chests/enemies around the world with lowish, but reasonable drop chances that could be collected to create specific items with notable appearances and flavour texts, people would be less averse to the randomness of loot.
Having enemies and chests having essentially no interest barring the extremely rare chance of a precursor, emphasises the lack of value killing things brings and makes you feel like you are never being rewarded for anything you do. The perils of having gold as the be all and end all.

Rare items would not be rare if they weren’t … you know … rare. Low drop chances are there for a reason, to keep an item either sought after, valued, or prestigious.

That’s the problem. GW2-ANET values a progressive view on the playerbase, rather than the individual experience.
Why is it every freaking MMO falls into this trap? GW1 did it right with Tormented Weapons, then they messed everything up in GW2, and worse… Did they really have to combine RNG and cash shop?

They have done the right thing with items like the Wintersday weapons, the new gauntlets and these Living Story weapons, but I agree with you. I still think adding more potential unique drops from specific chests and enemies is the way forward. Having specific things to hunt with a clear direction reduces the feeling of unfairness.

To be absolutely fair, RNG chests are not bad if done right. Halloween was perfect because the drops were not soulbound.
Players who liked gambling chests had a chance to score big because they could sell the items.

I’ve gotten two exotics, ever – on two consecutive days. Monday, exotic drop, Tuesday, exotic from the forge. Then nothing. RNG is… wait for it…
Random.
Actually, RNG is not random. Computers have no way of producing a truly random number, so they need to base their random seed from something. It might be the time or date, or some other number.
I have a theory that sometimes the random seed gets stuck and you “random” the same number repeatedly. I saw this a lot when making maps in Warcraft III. However I have no proof that it is happening or can happen in GW2, it just seems like something that is happening, based on previous experience with “random” number generators in games.

I’d bet there is still something wrong with RNG, yes. I notice after a server reset my loot is pretty good for the day, then it slowly gets worse and worse. I’ll be in party with similar MF and watch guildies get 10x the amount of items I get, I get 1 t6 scale – they get 12. I have 12 greys to sell – they have 40+.
It’s not RNG if its the same results every time.

In a previous game I played the random number generator was broken. If one of your stats (and it has been awhile and I cannot remember the particulars) was an odd number you were hosed. You always had to insure that you increased your stats by even numbers.
That stated I have been farming Dredge heavy loot bags for a bit now and noticed that DR is hosed. There are days when it does not kick in for an hour or longer and other days when the drops dry up in half an hour. I stacked myself today with MF and with 216% I found 10 heavy bags in an hour. Now I am not sure if MF factors into heavy loot bags but the previous day with only 113% MF I found 30 heavy bags in an hour.
Some days RNG loves me, some days RNG hates me but DR ALWAYS has a hate on for me!

I highly doubt the slot machines would run checks against whether or not they’ve paid enough on that day, since that would imply something illegal is going on. Besides, that would mean that the first run on every slot machine after 00:00 would be a winning one.
However, say the slot machine throws a random number between 1 and 1000, you just need to make sure that the appropriate percentage of the numbers are winning numbers. The odds should take care of the rest.
Random number generation relies partly on the user, since a computer does not have anything random built in. To achieve random, the time in milliseconds is taken for a seed number to run through the algorithm. So yeah, it is not all a computer algorithm.
And I highly doubt that GW2 would take the success of others into account while generating random numbers.

Unfortunately, due to a lot of biases that John Smith has mentioned in other threads, we won’t truly be able to determine if there is a flaw in the RNG, purely by sharing our experiences here. However we may be able to determine if there is a flaw in the RNG, if it is investigated by the person/people in charge of it.
Now a message to those people: yes, you have a bunch of people here who are probably just unlucky and complaining about not getting loot, but even if there is nothing wrong with the RNG, you can calm a lot of nervous players by releasing an official statement. If you do so, then we’d really have nothing to worry about, provided that we trust you, which I do. Until then, some of us are driving ourselves nuts wondering what’s going on. In our minds, the patterns of statistical anomalies seem way too regular. Please set us straight! And oh my god, what if we are right? Haha…

it was nice to get the cool gauntlets (depending on ones taste) guaranteed at the end of fire and frosts line though, more guaranteed stuff like that would be good, atleast then you have the RNG chance and achievement insensitive to actual get them/do them, same with bounties, should get a guaranteed exotic, hell bring out scavenger hunt already!

I think the main issue with trust here is that we get a dialogue going with Anet. The issues you linked were solved mainly because players communicated, and Anet listened. As it stands, regarding the RNG, players feel shafted and are not hearing anything from Anet, so they assume the shafting is intentional. If Anet responds, perhaps we can, as we did in the past, work together to pinpoint the problems. I trust them when they openly try and work with the community. For me, transparency = trust from me.
In none of the threads you linked did Anet say “there is no problem, go away”. Instead they said “we can’t find the problem, but we will keep looking. You can help us.”

How does Arenanet control the different drop rates of different items in BLC? If it really was a roll of the dice. Tonics would drop at the same rate as the skins.
How does Arenanet control the different drop rates of different items in BLC? If it really was a roll of the dice. Tonics would drop at the same rate as the skins.
Well I am not a computer programmer but I can surmise how the system works.
Every mob has a list of possible drops. If Mob 1 has the possibility in their loot table to drop 20 different items then the RNG should return an equal number of each item with a large enough sampling of rolls on a 20 sided dice. That would be simple RNG. However each of those 20 items would have to have a modifier attached to it which would determine how many times out of a given number of rolls a specific item would drop. So if #20 on the list was a Vorpal Sword that had a 1 in 100 chance of dropping (drop rate) every time 20 was rolled an additional roll of a 100 sided dice is made. If 100 is rolled you get the Vorpal sword, if not you get something else from a list of possibilities. Then another modifier is added, that thing called DR. You rolled that 100 for that vorpal sword but DR says uh uh buddy, you have been in this area for too long so you get nothing.
So if it were just a simple rng it would work well enough so people would not begin to think there is some sort of conspiracy working against them. It is the 2 modifiers that would make the difference, the drop rate weighting of each item and diminishing returns.
The one to look at in my opinion would be the DR (diminishing returns) modifier for mob related drops. How is that timer/modifier set? Is that modifier consistent in all cases or does it vary from area to area? Does it work by the map you are on or by the type of mob you are farming? There are too many variables here to even begin to guess and the more variables added the larger the chance there could be something amiss.
For bosses and chests DR would not be applied so the thing to adjust in those cases would be the drop rate.

Calling something broken because someone lucks out better than another, is like saying “I bought 1000 lottery tickets and lost” , some other guy buys 1 and wins 50million. Same with RNG on chests for the fused weapon skins, you think Arenanet is trolling people for profit by changing their odds?
They already have a guarantee on my money for the tinfoil hat when it comes out.. Now it might be 1 for each character.
No computers cannot truly do random, they can use fuzzy logic and variables to create the “feel” of randomness and add perimeters beyond that to further make it even more complex. But the same rules apply, in real life what are the chances of seeing two red 68 corvettes exactly the same driving in a small town in North Dakota?
If you do see it happen does that mean there is some mysterious power that is broken and the world is going to explode!? No, probably not. It just means that variables came together, millions or even billions of things occurred to make that very moment happen, and yes it could be true randomness. But then I would ask, what do you think people call “random” who believe in destiny and fate? If you personally believe in those things (and not getting into that discussion here, I have no problem with others beliefs and don’t push any myself) then you can at least appreciate that those 2 things are non existent in the game. Although i guess that could be argued as well, but i don’t know how anyone would argue that they were meant by divine powers to get a legendary :P But never know ^^
My question to Colin if he ever sees this thread is:
If tinfoil hats protect those conspiracy theorists from conspiracy’s, what protects others from the conspiracy theorists? Cause I wanna buy that hat right now.
