After watching the Heart Of Thorns Trailer and reading alot of hoping its an expansion (
correct me if im wrong) and coming up with ideas for classes and what not for the next chapter of GW2. I think raising the level cap would be a great idea.

I don’t what level Anet would raise it to but doing that would give playing heart of thorns more of a reason to play think about this:

A’lot of people are at 80 now and cant seem to enjoy endgame (though i am quite a bit)

raising the level cap with new content and new skills (we definitely need new skills)
would give a reason to play heart of thorns.

If your lvl 80 and Heart of Thorns comes out with new content, quests, dungeons, living story etc what would make you keep playing the new content?

if the level cap is raised you wouldn’t be done with your chars and hopefully they will make tyria’s map bigger with more content so there will be more to do after 80. adding on with new armor, classes,

i dont know just a random thought wanted to know what other’s might think of it. just an idea

There’s a very distinct chance that some unknown-but-tacitly-relevant quantity of people would quietly abandon GW2 and never come back if they raised the level cap and effectively rendered all our gear collections obsolete.

Personally, I’d be gone the moment I read the confirmed intention. If I’m going to play a gear-treadmill game, I’ll play one that never tried to be anything else and has been doing it right from the start.

GW2 trying to be that? No. That is not why I (or probably some/many) are here. That is not the game experience I want here. That is not what I will accept here.

One is only the smartest person in the room if they are alone.

Worst idea ever .. and has been discussed already 1000 of times.

Just remember that people could be instant new max level with level-up tomes, and
then they can trash all their ascended gear just to grind again for the next gear.

I prefer to grind for new skins because they are not obsolet like gear with stats,
whenever there comes something new.

Imo, there’s no point in raising the level cap if there’s no gear progression, and GW2 (and Gw1 for that matter) is not one of “those” games.
Same thing apllies viceversa (i.e., there’s no point in gear progression if there’s no level cap update).

We don’t need added levels to keep playing, we “just” need new maps, dungeons etc… :P

People have invested a lot of time, gold, resources and in some cases real currency in acquiring Ascended, Legendary, and Elite equipment. Raising the level cap would render all that work and equipment useless, and would be very unwise. People would leave in droves. Very bad idea.

I think we will get:

*New lvls of infusions- currently only blue quality
*Craftable ascended trinkets
*Solo mode dungeons OR hero/henchy/merc system from gw1 (unlikely)
*A new progression panel to augment our characters in a non-op way – sorta like wvw ability points system but more class oriented.
*A couple new weapon choices that can be used by all classes
*Modable/Swapable weapon skills to tweak how each weapon skill works
*A way to set our high lvl character’s power, in low lvl areas, down significantly to increase our drops quality. A type of hardmode in a way.

Mostly a wish list I guess ;-)
This sort of stuff.

I’m honestly more in favour of a level cap decrease. I only have one level 80 that wasn’t due to copious amounts of craft-levelling, and even on that character, I got to 400+ tailoring before reaching level 80.

Or they could remove levels entirely and make the game more like The Secret World. That would be awesome.

Absolutely not. This is a dealbreaker for me. If the cap is raised and people need to grind out ascended gear and legendaries all over again that’s the end of this game for me.

Raising the cap causes more problems without solving any. It causes massive power creep/stat imbalances (look at WoW for a prime example of bloated stats that become meaningless). It creates ghost town zones as all the prior end game zones are ditched because they’re no longer high level. It’s content REPLACEMENT not content EXPANSION.

You can do new skills, new zones, new weapons and armor, all that without a cap increase, and then it’s actually an EXPANSION.

So far Anet has added a few new skills and traits, and new zones, without raising the cap. More leveling itself would be meaningless with the tomes people have stockpiled. It’d just create new ascended/legendary grind to make new max level versions.

The fact that you have your head stuck in some line of thought that you have to raise the cap to expand the game is an extremely outdated concept.

No.

Why would we need a raise in the level cap in order to receive new content and new skills? How does it tie into level?

Also if you want more vertical gear grind – this is not the game you are looking for. We’re already going for gear of higher rarity and unique skins. Again – GW2 is based on horizontal progression and not vertical progression so the idea of adding it in the game is not and will never be well received.

I would go like ‘Ok tnx bye bye, seya never again’ and never go back to MMO’s anymore becouse I am so darn tired of Geargrind and all the other regular MMO’s so I am about to puke on them. Enjoyment for me is not to level up to gain skills and equip new gear, Enjoyment for me is; story, new skills, New Traits, New classes, New Races, New zones, New mechanics, New dungeons, new stuff, new more or less everything. But you don’t have to level up and render my hard earned gear useless for all of my characters to create any of those stuff I just mentioned.

If some ppl need a raise in cap level to continue to play the game, then they should just stop playing it. Rising cap level give nothing, it just kitten things up. All the stuff that you cited don’t need a cap rise at all. It’s not needed to add skills, maps, new armor, new stuff, etc.

The only reason for raising the cap level is the same as adding new tier of gear. Gear treadmill and power creep, which is not the mentally of this game. Player of this game don’t want vertical progression.

The number 14 is in no way connected to the number 80 afaik .. so its possible to
give us more traitpoints if max level is still 80 .. or even if they set the max level
down to 20.

They already made this game WAY more vertical than GW1, and I’ve always felt that was a mistake ..and that was before the sin that was Ascended gear. No, no ,no, no, ..and no more leveling. I’d be happy if they just got rid of levels all together.

Levels are not content, instead they hinder it. They add nothing good to a game (but numerous bad things). Going new places, doing new things, advancing new stories, accomplishing new challenges learning new skills, figuring things out, etc ..THAT is progress. You know what’s NOT “progress”? Arbitrary numbers going up for no reason so that everything else has to also go up to compensate.

A decade ago I fell in love with the GW franchise because it WASN’T “another one of those games like WoW”. Very low level and gear cap was really wonderful. GW2 has already gone backward on that philosophy way too much and I absolutely would not want to see it get even worse.

Except you don’t need to raise the level cap to give players access to additional trait points. GW1 had quests that increased the amount of skill points a player could gain after max level.

OP, you claim that players dislike the endgame in GW2. Why do you think that is? Certainly, there are a number of reasons, but one of them reasons I’d guess at is lack of character progression at level 80.

Instead of raising the level cap, why not simply add them elements of ‘character not being done’ – new skills, new traits etc – as progression systems at level 80?

No data – but I would actually play this game more if they did that. As it is:

80 levels is already too much. It kills the soul, thinking about leveling alts.

I actually think I’ve played far less of GW2 for that very reason. Alts were easy and fun in Guild Wars, and I put thousands upon thousands of hours into playing them.

In GW2, if I get tired of playing, I consider making an alt, think about the 80 levels of dreariness that is the personal story and hearts, and log off to play something else.

I honestly wish they’d do some kind of stat squish and reduce the total number of levels. I’d play more.

Of all the development mistakes ArenaNet made with GW2, 80 levels at launch was the biggest one, in my opinion. Even bigger than the Ascended debacle.

There are very few games where the game really does begin at the top level but I feel this one is. I don’t see a need for a level cap raise. Additional skills/gear/maps/modes/options /traits and so fourth can be added without a raise to the level cap. -100 from me for a level cap increase. Now on a safe side will go ahead and start amassing all the XP Writs they are giving us encase they do.

It’s not about how ‘easy’ or ‘hard’ it is to level. It’s about how fun or tedious it is.

Do you think the sort of people who have dungeons on farm still find them enjoyable?

Do you think EotM is fun in more than short bursts of a couple of hours at a time?

As for SPvP, what about all the people who aren’t already semi-pro or pro PvPers, and who therefore don’t have stacks of tomes of knowledge in their banks?

That’s even putting aside the fact that it would completely defeat the point of a level cap increase if existing tomes of knowledge and writs of experience remained valid at level 80+.

IIRC they said it was not off the table, and something they would like to see sometime in the future. But they say that about everything.

However, concerning a level cap raise. There really is no point. Plus with a level cap increase, you would have to have a new tier of gear, which means more grinding and time spent, and no one seems to want that. It seems that those who are advocating a level cap raise are old time vets of other popular MMOs which do have a rising level cap, and a gear grind from the very start, and wish to see such things brought here because “it works in those games”. They can certainly provide a way for more trait points, or even a “heroic” or profession skill tree without increasing the levels and making our hard earned gear obsolete.

My question to you is : what would raising the cap would bring to the game?

Most of the stuff that ppl talked about in this tread were stuff not linked at all with a cap raise and more Trait pts could be done wihtout raising the cap either, they already changed twice the way pts were gain as we level up, they could change it again and give us more pts at level 80 (not that I think it would be a good idea, more choice of trait ya, but no need or more trait pts).

I just think that raising the cap don’t bring much at all, just add some weird stuff with the gear. Either we need to get all our gear again, they give us some special MF recipe to upgrade everything or we keep level 80 gear on all our level 90 toons.

That’s why I said trivialize instead of invalidate or eliminate.

Scaling makes older zones easier to complete – I think that is even part of Anet’s goal with it. I dont want to see that happen with current max level zones – it would mark the beginning of a treadmill I don’t want to get on.
