delicate, brick-like subtlety.
I would hope anet would give us a good amount of advanced warning if their going to make a premium subscription. Although It makes me worry that they are corrupting the original concept of guild wars by even thinking about it.
There is however a premium subscription in china where you can pay to make the game easier. They have been translating parts of it for a while now and putting it into the game as hidden strings. This was orchestrated by the Chinese developer company that manages gw2 over there. However it would not take them much to put it on US and EU servers.
Personally I believe subscriptions and premium accounts are bad. Very bad. These cause developers to think only of methods of getting cash rather than making a game that is fun. On the other side It creates a rift between players that have and have not. I myself would rather see guild wars 2 shut down than a premium service started up.
There are many easier and less abrasive methods to get cash for a game.

I would be in favor of a premium subscription. There is a certain level of investment in games that is lost with the f2p/b2p model. If players become more invested in the game with their wallets, then the developers will likely become more obligated to produce content for paying customers.
One example I think of is Runescape. RS has both a f2p and p2p model, where p2p has access to a lot of extra features. The game is not pay-to-win, as the paying member abilities do not cross over to the free areas of the game. The f2p and p2p parts of the game are divided through free and member servers, which GW2 could adopt to prevent subscription members from easily overpowering the free players.
RS puts out content without an expansion in a form similar to ANet’s recent strategy of Living Story to expand the world, but the developers listen to their players and even go so far as to take polls for what players really want rather than keeping them mostly in the dark as we’ve been in GW2.
If a p2p model is introduced in the game, I’d expect it to be more than the simple dress-up game GW2 has become, and be bold enough to take risks in development rather than playing it safe for casual gamers. I’m completely in favor of a p2p model, especially if they aren’t planning on using the traditional expansion model to introduce new content. IMO, If I’m paying a subscription, there’s no excuse for them to slack off and introduce only tiny fragments of content at a time.
These are my opinions on the matter.
Were you can pay to make the game Easter? How do I imagine that? Like, weak mobs, better loot?

Maybe it’s where you pay an extra $10 when you buy the game to revert to the old NPE.

China’s VIP membership basically just adds extra convenience. They get a few gem store items for free as well as extra discounts. It doesn’t make the game easier. They also have to level their VIP membership by subscribing and playing, unlocking additional rewards, such as titles and unique perks like a personal revive and teleport. At the very end, they get a free precursor.
These old pictures pretty much sums it up:
http://imgur.com/a/k9GA4#0
The “Royal Club” is likely the VIP membership. Looking back, some people called it that. It’s not surprising to see it in the game files however since they both use the same game data, and yes, ArenaNet originally makes it in English and then it’s translated in China. ArenaNet already said the system wouldn’t be coming here and I don’t imagine they’d risk all the bad press.
ArenaNet already said the system wouldn’t be coming here and I don’t imagine they’d risk all the bad press.
Anet has established the precedent that what they say and what they do are not necessarily the same thing when money is involved. I am not saying that there will be a VIP system here, merely that we should not assume that anything is off the table.

Exactly. It would not surprise me if ArenaNet tried to introduce a sort of subscription, regardless of what they said in the past. One would think they knew better, but from past experience they’ll go for it anyway. And revert it soon after because of the uproar on the forums and other websites (reskinned T3 cultural in gemstore and the removal of custom exchange values in the gemstore come to mind right now).
You cant exactly blame them. People ask for more content and faster patches, but if anything is suggested to bring in more income which would allow more development people complain even louder. At least staying silent means all people can do is speculate.
I hope they put something like this in game even if it makes the 10% of the population that rages about this quit.

I think people tend to forget that games aren’t created on hope and wishes and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to see a game you worked (hard) on turn a decent profit. As long as whatever subscription thing they come up with doesn’t give some players an unfair advantage over others like access to more powerful weapons and armor or something like that and sticks to simple perks (kinda like what the delux version gives I guess and as was stated before with gem store discounts and personal banks and such) then I don’t see a reason to get up in arms about it.
It could be a decent way for the game to bring in more money and a nice convenience for those willing to pay for it while those that don’t won’t have their game neutered because of it.
A “premium” subscription being added would make sense for a new game, NOT a two+ year old game. The trend is usually P2P===> F2P (TOR for example), not the reverse. Who are they attracting with this kind of setup? Not the old players that’s for sure. The new ones? But the game’s been out since 2012, so any new players streaming in would be minimal.
The whole thing would reek of bad PR. Hell, even the removal of custom gem conversion saw articles in online gaming publications. Something seen as P2W (whether valid or not) would be a much bigger affair.
Oh man I just hope things don’t change too much. Im all for ANET making money to make the game better I just hope it doesn’t restrict anything. VIP only content would really kill me. Titles/cosmetics are fine but dungeons or other content like map zones or things like that would really suck.
Id be ok with VIP for gem store stuff but not if its LS or other content similar to LS.

ANet has already said that this isn’t something that will be released anywhere besides China.
i already mentioned this in reddit 2 months ago but no one wanted to believe it.

Well, technically, they have said that there will be no VIP system in GW2. They have also said that Royal Club in china is not a vip system.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
My question: is this something extra? Gemstore unlock? And does it give any kind of ‘advantage’ over people who choose not to buy it?
Don’t get me wrong; I know they’re a company and they gotta make money. But if this game ever starts slipping into a “buy to play, pay to win” strategy, I’m hopping off before I get too attached. I already got too much heartache from my last game that was pay-to-win. I’m not falling into the same trap twice. I’d rather go find a reliable subscription game.
I hope they put something like this in game even if it makes the 10% of the population that rages about this quit.
10%? You’re dreaming dude. Any subscription would anger far more than 10% of the players, and the publicity made by those leaving on other community websites would severely damage the image of GW, and of Anet.

Maybe it is a kind of bonus program. You receive royal points and the membership in the royal club when you purchase gems with real money. You could have access to the royal store where you can convert royal points into items like boosters, revive orbs, tools, weapon tickets etc.
Hold the panic people.
If there’s one thing that’s definite about GW2, it’s the business model.
We have been moved to use the same client as China (which is currently running quite well) so we may see a few of their assets from time to time.
Why are they in English you ask? There are a number of reasons. The China client probably has English as an option.
What if somebody at some point on the dev team actually did consider this for western release? Well that’s part of iterative development. You can’t be afraid to bring ANYTHING up, even if 99.999% it’s going to get rejected.
took me a bit to find it but this is the original pictures that set off this debate.

The china GW2 VIP apparently is this(at least from the beta images)
There’s a “Royal Title” this title requies you to pay 1250 gems every 30 days.
While you have the title you can gain “Royal XP” To increase your Royal rank by completing dailies/weeklies/monthlies.
This rank will appear next your character name to others.
your character name will also be shown in purple rather than green.
bonuses for royal title.
Increased XP, Movement speed, gathering.
Ability to teleport to friends.
3 gold + materials every day.
easier resurrection.(might be rez yourself on cooldown)
summon a black lion trader on demand.
when you rank up you get a reward(simmilar to leveling for us) they include.
Gemstore discounts(up to 90% off an item)
boosters
finishers
skillpoints
Materials
Items
Other thing that have been offered
Bag slots
Bank acess
character slots
bank space
It should also be mentioned that dyes cost 38 gems to use.
Keep in mind this is mostly due to the fact Anet had to hand over the game to a china dev who believed this is how you make money. This still shows a dark side to the game we all love..

ANet is always going to have people who don’t spend anything in the gem store, then they will have people like me. I just came back to the game and spent 100.00 on gems, more bank space, costumes, hairstyle and total make over kits. They need to make money and they have to balance that with the content that comes out.
I haven’t purchased any of the LS content because I only have 1 level 80 character and honestly, I don’t know if it’s worth it for the story. I don’t find the character stories all that intriguing and wait until I’m level 80 to do them all at once.
A sub won’t work and it will make people leave by the droves. A membership club that gives me gems, exclusive minis, exclusive outfits, etc, would definitely work for me and I’d support them in that way.

Why?
I’ve just whispered myself that code to see what you’re talking about. Don’t understand the rage, sounds like a Supermarket Loyalty Voucher to me.
Why make conspiracy theories about something that isn’t implemented?
People assume that if they bring in money from something as simple as a premium subscriptions, skins, or other bells and whistles that it will equate to more content.
Where do people get this idea?
If a company can make a large profit margin on something that takes little effort/ resources to create, do you find it sound business since to then turn around and produce something that takes substantially more effort/resources for free or for a much lesser profit margin?
Of course not.
It literately takes them no effort to produces skins and other bells and whistles compared to making more captivating content. They will continue to put in the bare minimum to keep enough people in the game in terms of content until people stop throwing money at bells and whistles.
Unfortunately this is what the industry has become because players have made it profitable to behave in such a manner. And while yes Guild wars 2 is a great game and is very moderate in terms of being a money grubbing pay 2 win game. It could very easily become this way if the community doesn’t resist it enough.
I am fairly confident that alot of us rather be paying for more dungeons, maps, and other captivating content than have what they push on us right now and not having the option for more content at all. So don’t buy it and they won’t try to sell it to us.
http://xunlaiheroes.wix.com/xhsa
If after some time of VIP membership (6 months or so) They rewarded you with a precursor it would sell strongly! Which would hopefully lead to more updates for the rest of us. Implement it!
I’d like to point out that just because a chat code exists doesn’t mean the item (or in this case subscription) will make it into the game. There have been many datamined items with chat codes you could use in game that are still not in game. (hello Anise’s clothing)
Beyond that, we do have Colin’s statement that they would not be bringing the VIP system over from China. I strongly feel it would be suicide for them to go back on that, and I think they probably know that.
Why are we talking about this again ?

Why?
Simple.
If they adapt it to a system in which the players get monthly little benefits in the gemstore (anywhere else would be stupid) like a monthly gem presents or discounts and the occasional free item, then it could be interesting.
Maybe some other simple cosmetic add ons, like a VIP backpack, VIP Finisher (Why haven`t we seen an arena net logo bursting up around the enemy up till now?), or something for which I am not creative enough at the moment.
To be honest, they could make one without making the game pay to win, but pay to look cool, which it allready is.
They would profit from a regular income and if they are sly, make it able to buy with gems, so people convert gold to gems for monthly subscription and take money out off the economy.
Many possibilites, which wouldn`t be gamebreaking to be honest.
I love datamining codes out for things which don’t actually exist except in the data. How about those tester amulets I’ve seen which give insane bonuses to Power or other stats? Or some other items which never materialized like Dye Seeds which I think could still be found in the data for a long time (and might still be there)?
The data package has a lot of junk still in it which hasn’t been removed. Probably because they don’t have someone dedicated to cleaning the trash out of it, or maybe they’re saving the assets (icons, or meshes) for something further down the line rather than implementing as-is.
Oh, also it’s been consistently repeated by red-names the China VIP system is not coming over here. Parse and chop up the wording as much as you want, the message has been consistent – we’re not getting it adapted to NA/EU markets.
(. . . and people wonder why they bother with PR speak . . . )
so, after the whole debacle about being more transparent with the players, and the post that mike o’brien made about it, and then, the refreshing increase in red posts across the forums, and player to dev interaction, and no single dev can take any time at all to simply come in here and say
“yeah it’s just extra code, not coming to na anytime soon” ?
am i asking for too much here?

Yes. I think it is asking too much, or at the least asking without respect.
Eeh, we are probably jumping the gun with it. Chinese audience is different from the NA/EU audience. Of course you gotta cater to each one differently.
It’s hard enough to convince people to play the game without the monthly subscription fee…
One example I think of is Runescape.
You mean the game where a businessman got control and then the investors got majority share. The game that went from subscription to subscription + game time cards + microtransactions to get everything? If you want to use an example to support the model, RuneScape is certainly not the one to use.

Sure, but all I see on this forum is people whining about Arena Net beeing this greedy company who just wants cash, above all else.
I haven’t ever seen this translated into the game.
Other than just pure guessing and speculation, I don’t see any reason to think that A Net would actually do this.
Guild Wars 2 still have the best business model I’ve ever seen.
I agree that they could make a non gamebreaking VIP system, but worth risking their entire selling point for GW2?
The whining now when they add a skin to the gemstore is already extreme. If they add a VIP fee, no matter how fair – it will be shunned by the community.
The reason why this issue keeps cropping up is simple, they keep adding things to the .dat file that suggests their going to do it. And as always you should believe what you see far more than what anyone says.
Also Anet has now gotten itself a reputation of springing bad news on their players without any warning. (Gem/gold interface just to name one.)
The fact is we need to keep going against this issue until they no longer consider it.
No subscription is the 1# reason why I got Guild Wars 9 years ago. Game with subscriptions(either mandatory or optional) have always been in a bad light for me. First I don’t believe you should pay a monthly subscription to play a game you like. Secondly in a premium subscription system I can’t see myself enjoying either side. As a free player I get jealous at all the Paid getting everything handed to them. And as a Paid player the game loses any of its challenge. I’ve been on both sides, neither is fun.
If Anet is in need of money there is a lot of alternative ways to do it:
Gold Mode Dungeons(paying x gems to increase the drop rate for you and your party)
Monthly gem Gift(Redeeming gems Gives you a gift from the gem store every month)
^^Why did you stop this?! I know players who exclusively bought gems just for this.
The idea is to make a money bomb(see Here)
Gem store purchases should be at the best one of two things.
1)be a personal benefit that no other player can see.
2)be something the benefits everyone around the player when used.
Here’s an example I think both players and devs could agree on.
4 new gemstone items each for 100 gems.
Grail of Might,Essence of Celerity,Armor of Salvation,Four-Leaf Clover(those from gw1 can see where this is going)
Grail of Might – One time use Consumable- When used gives everyone nearby a status effect where:+vitality, +power, +condition damage, +ferocity
Essence of Celerity – One time use Consumable- When used gives everyone nearby a status effect where: +movement speed, +Precision, +healing power, faster resurrection speed
Armor of Salvation – One time use Consumable- When used gives everyone nearby a status effect where: +toughness, health regen every second, damage reduction.
Armor of Salvation – One time use Consumable- When used gives everyone nearby a status effect where: +magic find.(these can be stacked with other magic clovers for more magic find!)
You could even make it so mixing boosters in the mystic forge has a 20% chance to get one of these super boosters.

Does anybody really think Anet would introduce a subscription for NA & EU when the game is over two years old?
If a subscription did suddenly become reality, wonder what impact in might have on the player base?

For the same reason that the VIP system was originally shown in English. ArenaNet develops it and China localizes it.
I hope they put something like this in game even if it makes the 10% of the population that rages about this quit.
10%? You’re dreaming dude. Any subscription would anger far more than 10% of the players, and the publicity made by those leaving on other community websites would severely damage the image of GW, and of Anet.
+ if it’s to pay a subscription, it worths better to play a game in which there are real updates.
You may also be dreaming.. .. subscription in a game that’s currently seeing a downward trend wont necessarily mean it will have any effect on what we get in terms of updates or content quality/support.. it just means it gives them another revenue stream to utilise.
I have no issues with a sub based game, I have been paying a sub for my main MMO fix for almost 10 years now (and NO, I am not a WoW player, in case anyone wants to put that accusation into lights, as is the norm these days)
Similarly I have absolutely no issues with the GW2 model or other traditional F2P/B2 games as I know as soon as I log in for the first time the main aim of the game is to make money by way of cash shop fluff etc and that’s fine because it becomes my choice to spend or not.
GW2 though does have a decent model better than many others I have tried imo. One major plus is how we are able to utilise in game currency when it comes to the gem store/purchases Other MMO’s make it a lot more time consuming to gain enough ingame currency in order to buy things.. even worse when there are dual business models like with some of the newer games – There in lies my concern.. if a dual model was brought in, how will it affect the normal player who bought the box and has been happy logging in for a few years, spending/converting, spending as and when the mood takes them.. will this mean there becomes a need to buy unlocks to see maps, content, game modes, item usages, level gating etc.
One not so old MMO has changed to this approach and I find it laughable that content I used to be able play, use, trade etc out of the box I am no longer able to, in fact I can run quests but not even be able to take/use the rewards until I buy a cash shop unlock… this is where the focus becomes mudded imo and would loose my interest.. Sure if that’s how it was out of the box when I bought it, then that’s what I bought into… but to switch and changed the game around such elements is a bit of a bad taster for me.
But hey.. nothing is known, nothing has been announced its all just hearsay and opinion.. but yeah nothing is beyond the realm of possibility for sure… let’s just all wait and see.
A plan where gem purchases (with cash of course) accrue points that after so many would give you a chest of goodies could work. You aren’t buying the goody pack directly, it’s just a reward for customers willing to part with cash on a regular basis.
Something like one point for every $5. Gem cards also count toward points. Each chest is better than the last with say the 5th or 10th chest containing a choice of precursor (not tradeable). Then the chest value resets. Something similar to the achievement chest progression, but much better of course.
Thus making it a reward for those supporting the game financially.
Of course I don’t believe any of this paranoia. The code is unified between the NA/EU and China versions and someone found the English text placeholder, that’s all.
RIP City of Heroes
This thread really is quite hilarious.
Players beg and cry that there isn’t a PAY FOR expansion. Yet, they release free content every two weeks. (Just don’t play the conent for however long it takes to make a expansion and bam! free expanision.) No $60 required. But, now it seems that it may be heading that way. Which is completely against the game that GW2 initially set out to be. Could you imagine having to buy an expansion $60 and every time you missed a LS an additional $1-$2. Good grief.
Now people cry about a potential optional VIP service, which is basically a long term expansion. Additional armor, looks, achivements, dailies, monthlies, etc.
I play GW2 because of the lack of subscription and the constant updates (however much), and appreciate it. I have better things to spend money on like school than a game I have already bought. That’s why I bought it in the first place.
It’s kind of a dammned if you do, dammed if you don’t for ANET.
