I’m all for skimpy armor. As long as there are equal (or close to) options for male skimpy, and not skimpy. I think, for the most part, GW2 has done well with this. Except for males. Female toons have lots of skimpy options, and non skimpy. Though when you divide it by class, there is some disparity. Cloth has plently of skimpy options, medium has few, and heavy a couple. Perhaps balancing that out a bit more would be good. As long as there are options. That includes more than just a trenchcoat for medium armor.

As for skimpy being always made to appeal to male gaze because of advertising and sex sellling…what about women? Looking at the opposite sex isn’t solely a male activity. Plus, honestly, if the only (or main) reason you play/do not play a game is because the female armor is skimpy is ridiculous. You want half naked ladies? The internet is FULL of them. Even dressed in skimpy fantasy looks. Y

However […] women […] are just objects that are to be manipulated for entertainment purposes.

You sexist monster!!!

(Kidding, of course. I’ve just always wanted to heavily & horribly edit someone’s post like that. Thanks for, I assume, being a good sport about it! )

Honestly I hope they add more armor skins in general soon. I don’t really care if they’re skimpy or not (though a mix is obviously good) … I’m noticing a lot of people starting to look very much alike, and I thought that was a big no-no the devs said.

What is it with you guys automaticly thinking that only (other) guys wants the skimpiness? Dudes, some girls like the skimpy too.

You will likely find that some of the skimpy sets are infact designed by female designers, not teenage boys -_-

Because it’s usually the girls who complain about skimpy armor and make fun of guys who want skimpy armor. Or they want skimpy armor on men just because they want equality. Here’s an example, among the many in this thread:

ragingpuma.4618:

I want less skimpy armour. please leave the skimpy kitten to the lesser mmo’s that i have no interest in playing. or atleast give us male skimpy armour so as i feel males are degraded also ty..

^ That sounds like a 14 year old girl’s comment.

It’s a fantasy game. Girls will wear skimpy armor while fighting dragons. If you don’t like it, don’t wear it. Simple. In fact, don’t even play.

Also, just because a guy wants skimpy armor on their character doesn’t mean they lack social skills or they “need to get out more” nor are they immature. I know guys in real life who play this game and they are not immature. They have a career, girlfriends or wives, but they play this game because it’s fun.

And yes, the main designer for the costumes in the game is a female. Take it up with her if you have any problems. Or just stop complaining about skimpy armor on females – I’m sure she hears it enough already.

I don’t mind skimpy outfits. What I don’t like are over designed armours. Some armours have a very nice simple design and are very tight fitting thus showing off the curves. I don’t mind showing off her curves or even any skin, but when I’m running around the far Shiverpeaks, it just doesn’t look right if she’s not all bundled up like a polar bear. When I’m running around other parts that doesn’t look like it’s 40 below, I like seeing my toon in sexy outfits, and I’m a woman.

I think skimpy (fantasy) and covering (practical) are pretty much even on some characters. I play a female Norn and female Human and have no complains about the Human armor selection. Norn, I have to agree, are a bit heavier on the practical side so not too revealing there.
I am just glad GW2 is not like another game that will be out soon.. let’s call it ‘Maid and Bowl’. There I would definitely not play a female character!!!
GW2 is just right IMO..

If you are “turned on” or “attracted to” a toon in a video game? You may need to get out more.

why does it have to be about that? my avatar as a representation of myself in the game. there is nothing wrong with wanting to look a particular way – it’s called roll playing.

Sarcasm is lost on you, isn’t it?

I’m not disagreeing with making your toon look however you want it to look. I making fun of those who think that the toon is a true representation of the player behind it.

Good taste is subjective, and if you don’t like kittenty outfits, then don’t wear them.

How do you people even manage to go out at night, do you confront every girl in a short skirt or visible bra straps in the club?

Cause they aren’t out in a kittening battlefield, in stabbing distance of someone else who is looking to stab.

It has nothing to do with prudence, and everything to do with being reasonable and practical. As I said before, while it’s a fantasy game, you can only suspend your disbelief so far. No matter how you slice it, a girl character charging into close-range combat with a metal bikini is just ridiculous.

Actually, this is where town outfits would be most applicable…. I you have a female toon that wants to run around in a porn-girl scout outfit or whatever, get gems to buy it from the store. Similarly, guy toons that want that leopard printed banana hammocks with some sandals and sunglasses to soak up the rays on the LA beachs… whatever, grab em at the store. I can understand as the female toons start out poor and not well armored, that the attire may not be “fully covered” and if people wanna transmute those styles, fine…. but there should be cool looking feminine armors that “fit the features” without necessarily making her look like a bimbo at higher levels. Maybe there are some? Frankly, I find the non-scholar female professions have some of the best looking armors while also having their fair share of the more revealing armors.

I definitely want to see skimpier clothing. Yes that sounds bad, but it’s true. We should have a wide range of armor/looks considering that’s what Anet decided to base it’s end-game on for the most part. Don’t want to grind for stats? Grind for looks! Well everybody wants better stats, but who says one set of armor is better than another? My favorite bottoms for my human female ele has been the lvl 20 white acolyte drops (skimpy skirt ftw!)

I also want to see this for my ranger sylvari. Right now he has CoF just because it looks cool, but it doesn’t really fit him. I’d love to see some type of armor that the dothrakis wear in the Game of Thrones.

I’m a female in my late 20’s and I love skimpy armor. I can’t play an MMO without skimpy armor. I really don’t get this stereotyping that only immature males have scantly clad females; and females have fully covered females. My husband used to dress his characters in sexy stuff when he played MMOs. I don’t think he is immature or weird for doing it. It was fun playing with him because we would go after the same outfits. I wear sexy armor because I want to look sexy. I don’t think skimpy armor is sexist and degrading. If anything I consider it empowering. I want to make heads turn. Well, not so much in video games, but in real life I actually like being hit on. In real life though I can’t wear stuff like that, and wouldn’t because I know it is way to inappropriate. That and I’m married now. But with the fantasy setting, I can actually wear what I would love to wear in real life if I could get away with it.

My favorite outfit I had in a MMO was in AoC. I wore sandals, a headband, and a loincloth. That was it. I felt very “free” with no top on whatsoever. It was awesome fun. And I loved the guys that ran around in just a loincloth too.

I don’t expect Guild Wars to ever have mature levels of skimpy armor, but it would be nice to see more skimpy options especially in the medium armor. Heavy armor I think lacks too when it comes to the humans. Also most heavy armor looks bulky and I want something form fitting like the gladiator set from GW1. But it is important to have as much variety as possible. While I do want more skimpy armor, if everyone was in skimpy armor then I wouldn’t feel special (Tera is an example of that).

It seems like depending on your gender and armor type (light, med, heavy) you seem to have one or the other but rarely much of both.

As long as male characters are included, I wouldn’t mind.

Plus, more freedom with character appearance is a positive in my head, anyways.

Male characters have plenty of bare-chested armor. Norn Males where known for having bare chests. Far as I can see, the only Norn female armor that sorta matches that is the Jora Concept art.

They seem to have added a hastily drawn diapers on several female armors recently as well. You can see low rez solid color stuff sticking out from some armor.

I wouldn’t mind more metal bikinis & conan-style loin-cloths. It’s unrealistic, but that’s what makes em fun.

Couldnt have said it better myself! It has nothing to do with being prude or anything like that, its just so damn silly to see some of the so called armor out there, mixed with the extreme high heals.

A woman can look sexy but I just cant understand this fixation that female heros have to be dressed really kittenty, is it so hard to come to terms with the idea of a woman that is strong, determined and want to protect others and NOT be dressed like she is just waiting to be tipped?
God that made me sound like a hardcore militant feminist which I am not but its just that why is it that all female characters in movies and games are expected to “dress to arouse”? In the end, I think balance and variety is the best choice. Everyone has different preferences, and within reason, everyone should be able to craft their character how they want. Skimpy or otherwise.

My own take is yeah, revealing “armor” or maybe gear is a better word can look amazing. On either gender. So can the tin can look, if the tin can in well modelled and designed.

In the end, I like the option for revealing armour when it is tied to a reason for it being that way. Mesmers could arguably be using their charm as part of their spells. Beserker types aren’t exactly know for wearing lots of armour either.

Also, I don’t really buy the everyone not in a tin can is insane. Heavy armour is one way to fight. The Picts who more less fought in loin cloths and body paint were also fierce fighters, eventually being one of the forces to drive the Romans out of Britain.

In the end, if GW2s end game is looks, let people have anything they might want. A woad warrior or armoured-up (but still light armour) necro should be as valid looks as the armoured juggernaut warrior or the “lightly covered” necro.

I’ve come to think of the armours in this game as clothes, leather and metal instead of light, medium, heavy.

Open minds are fine but implying that someone who does not like skimpy armor and may have a problem with the fact that a lot of games (note: not this one) force you to wear skimpy armor is less intelligent is a bit problematic. The reason many complain isn’t just because of skimpy armor in and of itself (though some of it really gets very very silly) but also because you’re often not given options. As Araushnee says, variety is good. You wear that skimpy miniskirt, I’ll wear the awesome robe, both of us are happy.

Which is where I stand on the general topic. I’m for more options, more variety for both males and females. That includes more skimpy armors for men if we’re adding more of them for women and options of the non-skimpy variety for both.

I don’t want female humanoids to look like blocky robots, nuns, or bigfoot.
By all means let us continue to have large and interesting shaped cleavage windows, bare midriffs, and eye high skirts!

You seem to be talking only about female characters, which makes my knee-jerk response to your post one of irritation and NO.

Personally, if I complain/comment about female armor being too skimpy, it is almost always because the female armor is skimpy and the male armor is not. This is sexist and it bothers me, so I make my thoughts on the matter known. I am certainly no “prude”, and in fact often enjoy dressing my girls in pretty, sexy clothes, and I would kindly ask that people such as the OP consider the fact that it is not merely “prudes” that complain about skimpy female armor.

Give both genders equally skimpy/sexy gear, and I give this suggestion a thumbs up. Otherwise, I emphatically disagree.

I apologize if this came out too harshly — I just tend to be a bit defensive as this topic is often met with "yeah sexy ladies, we want skimpy gear! . . . what now, sexy dudes? eew lol no -posts picture of a buff guy in a skimpy pink unicorn outfit-" or some other such intelligently phrased variation. xD

Well… I do have have a muscular male elementalist languishing in a corner… It is true that his muscular build is going to waste… You would think that he could at least have a nice vest to show off his arms, but no, most of the cloth outfits cover him completely.
I take no offense, such drama is beneath me. I do sympathize with your sentiments. as well as with the char player. Much of the physical character development does seem to be wasted due to lack of viewable skin/fur/(cellulose?).
I picked female humanoids because I find them most interesting, and so I tend to notice when a game starts making them bland…

You do have good points; it would make sense for no one to complain about skimpy male clothing if none exists… I certainly wouldn’t mind males having bare midriffs, sleeveless vests, or “shirts,” that were merely a leather harness or a collar and bracers.
The same goes for the char. It just wasn’t a major concern for me… I am glad that people are making their preferences known however. And, well, I am going to be more glad when those preferences happen to align with my own.

Someone wearing “skimpy” armor is FAR MORE LIKELY TO LIVE than someone wearing 400 pounds of tank plate, flinging around a thirty pound sword and lugging a fifty pound shield to go along with it.

You get one of two choices:

Either the mass of the armor and weapons matter, in which case you will die of exhaustion from wearing your heavy armor longer than an hour at a time…

Or it doesn’t matter, in which case skimpy armor makes MORE sense because it takes less material to make the armor.

There’s no scenario where bulky full plate armor wins out.

Well if that were the case, then the topic would be along the lines of “can we get more variety?” But the OP was talking about skimpy armor.

Yes variety is good, but once the topic of skimpiness for females comes up, that’s when the hate starts to come out (and it seems to be mostly from females). If you read through the thread (not just this one, but in any forum where the topic of skimpy armor comes up), you’ll see these common replies:

“you need to get out more”
“you need a girlfriend”
“go level up your social skills to 80”
“wanting skimpy armor is immature”
“go look at porn”

I hate repeating myself, but just because someone wants their character to look sexy doesn’t mean they are lacking in social skills. It’s a fantasy game. I wish people would understand that.

As you said, someone can wear the awesome robe, let someone else wear skimpy armor.

When the movie 300 came out, I didn’t hear any guys complain that the men wore skimpy armor as much as girls complain about skimpy armor on females.

And I’m curious: Girls want skimpy armor for males. Do they want it for equality or do they really want skimpy armor on males for their characters?

For the females, behold, the ultimate armor:

Holy carp, and you say my argument is weird. That is some seriously tenuous logic right there. Guy, as much as I support your right to enjoy women running into battle with their kitten flopping about, you’ve completely boggled me.

Someone wearing “skimpy” armor is FAR MORE LIKELY TO LIVE than someone wearing 400 pounds of tank plate, flinging around a thirty pound sword and lugging a fifty pound shield to go along with it.

Except you’re ignoring the fact that, realistically speaking, anyone dealing with fire magic (or anything similar), regardless of armor, are pretty much equally screwed. And that fireproofing materials is actually possible to some degree, and that in that scenario, being more covered would be beneficial.

Either the mass of the armor and weapons matter, in which case you will die of exhaustion from wearing your heavy armor longer than an hour at a time…

Maybe so, but I do think norn and charr in particular can get away with it. Mind, heavy armor doesn’t have to be bulky. The GW2 universe is fairly technologically advanced (i.e. asuran magitech, charr engineering). Don’t see any reason why producing lightweight armor sets isn’t feasible.

Or it doesn’t matter, in which case skimpy armor makes MORE sense because it takes less material to make the armor.

So should I walk around in the nude all day and not buy clothes because it’s more economical to be skimpy? Please, now you’re just grasping at straws.

At the end of the day, I don’t mind a few skimpier options as long as they’re not basically metal bikinis. Pit fighter set is a pretty good example of how to do it. I would prefer to see as little of it as possible. Honestly, the most sensible argument for this is the fact that as things currently stand, it’s hard to show off charr markings/sylvari glows/norn tattoos.

For one, I don’t really see the relevance of that example to this thread; nor do I see particularly many people opposing the OP’s proposition – in fact the majority seems to have no issue with it.
But working with what you’ve said, the issue, I think, that women tend to have with skimpy female armor is that if you looks at MMOs and games overall, revealing female armor ends up being more common than otherwise. For males, on the other hand, revealing armors tend to be far rarer than concealing armors. Males get armor that they can go into battle with, and females get to look “lol so hot”.

Whether something is tasteful vs. tacky, or sexy vs. objectifying is a highly subjective issue that depends on the opinions, beliefs, culture and comfort zone of the player. Because of that, there should be many options in the game. Skimpy armor is fine, as long as there are as many modest/pragmatic options for those who don’t like the revealing designs.

What should never happen is a gender double standard in skimpy armor designs. There should be as many skimpy armor designs for male characters as for female. Period. Anything else is sexist.

It’s also not any fun, because anybody who is attracted to men wants to enjoy those well-rendered male bodies. And maybe male players would like to run around in something that’s not a neck-to-ankle dress? Maybe they want to feel strapping and hot, just like female gamers who deck their buxom elementalists in Masquerade because it makes them feel sexy?

Personally, I hate the Masquerade set because of the way it embodies the armor double standard (take a look at the male version), but again, that is my personal conviction/comfort zone. Make male tribal armor available in PvE, and it is going on my human male necromancer. Just to support equal opportunity armor. And also because it’s hot.

Male Masquerade armor properly colored (and without the ridiculous Boxer Shorts Hat) makes you look like David Bowie in The Labyrinth. It may not be skimpy, but that fact offers fairly compelling opportunities for it to be sexy. We just need some huge 80’s Glam Rock hair and more heavy eye makeup options for guy characters to finish the look. Also a crystal ball contact-juggling emote.

… my latent bisexual tendencies and I will slink back out of the thread now.. err…

See, this is the weird argument.

Those swords? They’re made out of fire and annihilate everything they touch. METAL ARMOR DOES NOT PROTECT YOU FROM THAT.

The elementalist over there? Summons liquid hot magma and sprays you in the face with it.

Against fire, perhaps not (though flame resistant and flame-proof suits do exist.) The armor would certainly help you against being crushed by earth based attacks, though, and would absorb some of the impact from non-magical weapons, as well as water/ice based attacks. And let’s not forget that plate armor was tested against rifles, to make sure it could stop bullets. You might even be able to find a way to ground your metal suit in order to nullify electric attacks, if you put your mind to it.

Fire turns your metal armor into an oven. Everything else, though… seems like armor has the advantage, to me. Not to mention armor grants protection from the elements while you’re adventuring through harsh climates.

Just sayin’.

The name of this thread should be changed. It’s not so much about being skimpy is it more we just want to look fashionable. When was the last time a potato sack or tin can looked fashionable?

At the end of the day it’s about choice. If you don’t offer a choice either way across both genders you are painting yourself into a corner.

A warrior, a guardian, and an elementalist walk into an open field…
The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”

Thing is there is a choice in the game already and this has been discussed milion times before the game was released.

The only thing lacking is armor equality within the same sets (not all but great portion of light armors). If the male armor is concealed and female revealed in the same set that is nothing but sexist. If both are concealed or revealing then it’s fair. I’m unlike most girls – don’t care if my char looks sexy or not. I certainly won’t be staring at her body while playing nor I have such interest. I make my characters look cool and more armor is better for me.

All of those female human thieves and rangers aren’t saving up for the T3 cultural because of it’s practicality.

Same goes for winged armor. I’ve seen people craft the level 60 set just so they can transmute it to a new lvl 2 character.

I think there are and will be plenty of options both ways.

To be fair human T3 is literally the only good looking armor set for medium wearers. I mix T3 with T1 legs and shoes and it looks great. All the other armors are hilariously bad looking and 90% of them are robes of some sort.

I kind of disagree. Especially at higher levels or with cloth armor, there seems to be few modest armor options. Like, only 1 of the orders has modest-looking cloth armor for women.

I’m all for more armor diversity, but that should include more modest options as well. I guess we agree that they need more varied armor.

No, female humanoid light armor lacks outfits I like and has way too much of the sexy and elegant look, which I hate. Give me something more… idk, sporty?
Female humanoid medium armor is pretty good though. lots of nice looking sets. though I think it could do with more of what the first post is asking for, since it doesn’t really have any
But I give a definite “no” to heavy armor that doesn’t look it could provide any protection

mythical creatures, and magic in general, don’t break the law of cause and effect, just the laws of energy physics, as they apply to our world. This fantasy world could have a different set of physics laws. That’s fine

I’ll jump on the ‘options’ bandwagon. In my experience (I’m not just talking about GW2 here), those cries of dismay the OP writes off as ‘prudishness’ have not been so much about the existence of skimpy armor/costumes for female characters, but about the existence of predominantly or only skimpy armor/costumes for female characters. I have no objection to there being skimpy options for both females and males, so long as there’s a balance of non-skimpy as well.

There is plenty of skimpy clothing in the game, and a lot of cleavage. There are in fact a number of neat sets which provide a more practical look, except fail at the need for some gratuitous cleavage thrown in.

The OP is making the classic “we’re under attack”/victim argument. Sorry, but the societal norm is for skimpy/kittenty female clothing, and in games, armor. The skimpy/sexy/kittenty side is not some poor, oppressed minority. Revealing armor (ie any armor with at least some cleavage or thigh or belly showing) is the majority of armor.

neither does making up an example like this, in a game where you cannot target body areas.

if magic exists and youre fine with that, then you are also fine with the idea of an invisible personal forcefield – go with that.

I’m really confused by the fact that some of you are acting as if “the prudes” are making it so there is no skimpy armor. Last I checked, aren’t most of the armor samplings in this game “skimpy”, at least as far as light armor goes… ? There’s cabalist armor, ok… maybe some of the dungeon armor, like SE and CoF… but I think you’re getting ahead of yourself fretting that there is no skimpy armor here, because there is quite a bit.

What makes me roll my eyes is seeing the difference in male and female armors in some particular sets, where the female will be wearing virtually nothing, but the male is almost entirely clothed. That’s just silly. If you’re going to have skimpy armor, at least make it similar for both genders.

Their are too many long coats covering the players backside.

I want more form fitting clothing. They don’t all have to show more skin.
