Steam Ogre
What are the people angry about? It would help us to understand the problem if we knew their objections.

I’m guessing that they are angry because they arrived on the map after the Ogre was killed and are expecting the Ogre to be available to be killed and it isn’t.

That’s possibly it. There is a 20 minute period after the event in which it can’t be done. Anyone who shows up after the fire ele and someone has a key, can’t do it then.
I know fairly recently I did the fire ele, someone had a key and we couldn’t do it. No one was happy about that.

Actually the anger and hate is expressed during the time that we’re warning in map chat that we’re about to open Ogre. Usually we state the warning when the final 5min timer starts and open it at the 3 minute mark. Its people that are already on the map but feel it is their right, even if they didn’t find and charge a key, to expect key holders to open it only after FE.
Yes it’s your right to open it anytime you have a charged key but without announcing that it’s opening now for all and keeping it to yourself is, well selfish in a game where co-op play is the underlying theme in PvE.
So if you are going to open it, declare in map chat that you are doing it and all are invited and do it before the pre-event starts because some players do those events and not just stand around waiting for FE to spawn taking pot shots at any thing that happens to come close during the pre-events.
He already said in his post that they are declaring what they are about to do. Everyone has a chance to take part in this event.
@Topic: I have no clue why anyone is complaining. It’s hilarious.

We do warn in map chat, as I’ve already said. We don’t open it during escort either, only during the time when everyone is standing around 5min before the actual spawn and please don’t say that they’re all actually doing something in there. Also Ogre melts so incredibly fast that we destroy it and are back to the FE chamber within the same minute. There is no risk of failure.
Bottom line is that I’m in this game to help my friends and my guild. I don’t have to warn in map chat but I do because it is the nice thing to do. With that said… I’m not here to serve the masses just “because its tradition”.
Sure, it’s an option for you to do it before, and it is more optimized for time than doing it after, but at the cost of screwing over anybody who joins the map after you do it. Don’t think that just because you have the choice to do something in-game means it can’t negatively affect other people. And I don’t think it’s unreasonable for people to be a little annoyed when your decision has negative consequences for them.
Considering it takes under 2 minutes to do it, I think your best option is to just stop doing it before FE. If you refuse to make that concession, imo, you deserve all the flak you can get. People strive for ideals, but society runs on outcomes, and the only reason it works is that individuals make sacrifices for the good of the whole. You can choose not to be one of those individuals, but don’t be surprised when the whole gets mad at you.

Wait, YOU’RE part of the guild that’s been trolling FE? My friends were telling me that the Ogre was bugged, so we stopped doing it, since we like to do the 2 for 1 boss run.
That’s pretty bold of you to come out and admit, mate. While Anet can do anything about it, it’s pretty bad form for a small guild to ruin the game for an entire map.
I’d say the real issue is some sort of unwritten common understanding that the Ogre Event gets done AFTER FE is killed (since there are tons of people that just completed FE available to do it).
The OPs Guild deciding to do it BEFORE FE does not follow the above convention and that is why the other players are upset. While this post seems like a reasonable explanation from the OP, he must understand that many of the upset players will simply see it as a middle finger gesture (even tho, I am convinced it is not), so I doubt it will server the purpose he intends.
If you continue to do the Event “out of order”, you will continue to be harassed and get nasty mails…..just accept it.
EDIT: on the issue of WHY the convention is for AFTER the event, keep in mind that the Ogre Event requires you to zone out of the existing Metrica and then back in. This could possibly result in a new zone for the player. Not sure that this would be a huge issue with Megaserver, but before, it would certainly result in a potential “overflow zone” that many players hated (but do not understand that ALL Megaserver zones are just that). Maybe the “convention” of AFTER is just a hold over to avoid getting shunted to an overflow? Also, many players consider the “waiting” period before World Boss events as part of the socializing aspect of the game and they enjoy it (and there are actual events going on at this time).

If Anet were to ever enable Open World PvP, threads like this would create hit lists. This is very similar to when people would ruin Orr farms by killing champs when they weren’t supposed to.
You are selfishly blocking a considerably larger group of players from doing one event by asking them choose between your event or theirs. Sure you can probably get back and do enough damage to get the FE rewards but instead of getting 3 exotic chests by doing FE and then Ogre, is to choose between one exotic chest and maybe if they get back in time 2 more if you do Ogre then FE within the 5 minute timer.
Do you even know what you’re talking about here? None of our guild ever loads so slowly that they miss out on FE after doing Ogre beforehand. He melts that quickly. We even have time to get back to the FE chamber and pop a Heroes banner for everyone to grab. If your connection is that slow then getting one extra chest is the least of your concerns.

Thank you for being reasonable, Brother Grimm, even if you don’t agree with the what and why of this situation. I’ve never been a believer of doing things in order and I don’t think I ever will. :/
I grow increasingly tired of taking all this heat in game, mirrored again by some forum posters here. If you knew half the crap I’ve had to listen to when I’m warning people in map chat…. Meh. But the message I seem to be getting here in this thread is “You’re selfish and you need to conform.”
EDIT: on the issue of WHY the convention is for AFTER the event, keep in mind that the Ogre Event requires you to zone out of the existing Metrica and then back in. This could possibly result in a new zone for the player.
No it doesn’t. The Steam Ogre event is in the normal Metrica Province zone map, just very high in the air. There is no loading screen to travel to the Ogre, but there is a loading screen when you leave the platform, because you’re being placed outside the reactor afterwards. That loading screen is simply due to the distance you’re moving, it doesn’t mean you’ve left the zone and are re-entering it. There is no chance that you will be placed in a different Metrica zone unless your game crashes for some reason during the load and dumps you to character select or desktop.
It works the same for waypointing within a zone. It doesn’t matter if there’s a loading screen for doing so, you’ll stay on the same map. If you’re fighting Tequatl and are killed, you can safely waypoint to Brooloonu Waypoint and return to rejoin the fight, you won’t get shunted onto a different map.
I’d say the real issue is some sort of unwritten common understanding that the Ogre Event gets done AFTER FE is killed (since there are tons of people that just completed FE available to do it).
This is exactly the problem. I don’t do FE daily, but have done it 30-40 times at this point, and in my experience Ogre is saved for afterwards so pretty much everyone can get a crack at it.
You are breaking the unspoken Steam Ogre rule basically. In OP’s defense, people need to not be babies about it. Everyone’s there for FE. Ogre is just an extra champ bag. They’ll live.
Some will be upset, and if it bothers you that much to read angry messages, then save it for after FE. But you don’t have to. I would tell them all to deal with it.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….

I don’t think conformity is really the issue (tho, I get that sheep will be sheep). There ARE Events going on prior to FE that players will miss out on due to doing the Ogre event with you. If they can do the Ogre event AFTER, they get MAXIMUM rewards. Do you not see that your actions ARE counter productive to the greater good (as stupid as that sounds saying about a game)?
I feel confident you are not doing it specifically to be selfish, but hopefully you can see where some players will take what you are doing (I believe incorrectly) as something spiteful.
Exactly WHY is showing up 5 or 10 minutes later (if all you want is the FE kill) and then doing the Ogre with the entire map, not possible for you?
Irregardless of how I, you or anyone feels about the “rightness” of what you are doing, you will NOT stop the hating by posting this here….you can only stop the hating by not doing what you are being hated for.
EDIT: I 100% agree that abusive messages and mail are childish and in no way productive (or needed) but you are talking about a bunch of people that are playing a video game…..not sure what you expect, so grow some thick skin if you plan to do something to PO them (whether or not you think it should upset them or not).

OP, just remember that Boss Trains are serious business. It’s all about efficiency and pattern. WP to boss → kill boss → kill bonus boss → WP to next boss. If you break the train, 99.99% of the passengers will get upset, as you’ve seen in this thread.
I suggest that you take your guild and do the Steam Ogre far outside of the boss timers. Or, just do it after FE, like everyone else.
A lot of people don’t like change. The “proper” way to do it is to open it after the fire ele. Whether it makes sense or not to object to opening it before the fire ele, it’s tradition (so to speak) for that event to be done after. Anytime someone does something not “in order” is going to provoke some people and I don’t see this changing.
So, your choices are to continue to open before and continue to have angry responses or to open after and have not have angry responses.
Doing events that are available to be done, when you want to do them is fine. If people bad mouth you, report them. Take screen shots to forward to Anet when possible.
Some of the goal post moving going on in this thread is hilarious. Starting with (paraphrased), “you are being selfish by not warning people,” and switching to, “you are warning people but some of them dont notice so you are being selfish,” when that is explained to be false is more than a little off IMO.
Lets start again.
Yes it’s your right to open it whenever you have a key.
What’s not to Hoyle is doing it while players are distracted fighting during the 5 minute countdown.
While you do announce it on map, your assumption is that players have map chat up in their current tab. Why would players even be looking for it if tradition says Ogre is done after FE? Not to mention how long an announcement would be visible in the chat window. Maybe you expand yours to cover the left side of the screen but I would say that most have 5-10 lines visible at most and with all the local chat going on I bet that your announcement vanishes in seconds.
So you are in one room while there’s a birthday party in the other and you ask if it’s okay to take a piece of cake now before it’s presented and cut. And of course since everyone is distracted you go ahead and take not just a piece but the whole cake so nobody but you can get a slice.
While it’s in your right to do it, it is still selfish. It’s not like some of those players you froze out aren’t also jumping to the next boss and it’s not like every player is simply standing around during that 5 minute countdown. But since they yield their interest for the whole, they are fools for not joining you.
That’s being selfish, being greedy. That’s looking out for you and your friends over the general population. Since everyone participating would get a drop your jumping the gun is denying all those players the reward. And that is sort of sticking it to them in a game where it’s very difficult in PvE to stick it to another player while playing.

There are those of us that only care for ourselves, those of us that care for a group, and those of us that care for everyone. For better or worse I’m the type that cares for my group above all else. HOWEVER I do warn in map chat, so that everyone present has the option of joining in if they so wished.
As far as trains go and the greater good? No. There isn’t much difference between what is going on here with FE/Ogre than there ever was with someone killing a champ out of order in Queensdale or Frostgorge. People feel so entitled to their train and their order that anyone that doesn’t fall in line must be treated with contempt. How awful is that and why should I respect them for it?
Exactly WHY is showing up 5 or 10 minutes later (if all you want is the FE kill) and then doing the Ogre with the entire map, not possible for you?
Sometimes it is. There are times when we get to Metrica Province too late and calling Ogre out would be unreasonable – knowing that not everyone would be able to make it. So we wait until after. However many times we have another Temple/Boss in waiting that we must rush to ASAP. We may have a scout on an active Foulbear map going into Stravig phase or a Lyssa at 50%. Haste is required in those cases. So its better for us to be done ASAP.
Irregardless of how I, you or anyone feels about the “rightness” of what you are doing, you will NOT stop the hating by posting this here….you can only stop the hating by not doing what you are being hated for.
Oh I wasn’t expecting this thread to stop the abuse I receive for my actions here. How could it when only a fraction of players even view the forums? No… I just had to get it off my chest, you know? But I disagree to your statement on only stopping the hate by not doing what I’m being hated for… I could also stop warning in map chat.
However I don’t think I’ll do that…. because THAT would be selfish.
EDIT: I 100% agree that abusive messages and mail are childish and in no way productive (or needed) but you are talking about a bunch of people that are playing a video game…..not sure what you expect, so grow some thick skin if you plan to do something to PO them (whether or not you think it should upset them or not).
That’s the thing – I don’t deserve the abusive messages. Yet the more I receive the easier it is for me to view the masses as being a collective PITA. I know they’re not… but still. Do you know that not a single person has ever asked nicely that Ogre be done after FE? In all the time that we’ve done it this way? Not one.
Oh noes! Someone is playing the game with their friends and uses game mechanics to make that happen! How terrible! How selfish! How cruel!
Just for those who need it spelled out, I’m being sarcastic here.
Playing the game in a way that just so happens to be “against tradition” is not selfish. They even announce it in the mapchat. And if people don’t have that open, they can’t complain when they miss the announcement. Tough luck. I was completing Blazeridge Steppes last night and kept waiting for someone to announce the Shatterer. Nobody did, so I missed it. Guess what? The world didn’t end. You can’t blame a player for using content in a way that’s perfectly fine and intended for being “selfish” because you miss out on loot or something. Nobody is denied their reward because nobody has an inherent right to said reward. Same thing could be said for starting the fire elemental preevent in the first place. If people start it right when it spawns, those who arrive a little later because “traditionally”, the fire elemental takes some time to arrive, miss out on it. It happens.
If people really get this upset about “missing out” on a single event migth want to reconsider their priorities. It’s not the moon landing. It will be up again in a bit. It might be annoying for a split second, but that’s about it.

That’s the thing – I don’t deserve the abusive messages.
Actually, you’re the one inviting it because you admit to not caring what the rest of the map thinks. If you don’t like people getting mad at you, stop doing the things that make people mad in the first place.
Edit – The #1 Rules of Conduct is as follows: “While playing Guild Wars 2, you must respect the rights of others and their rights to play and enjoy the Game.” By purposely ruining the Ogre run for everyone on the map, you’re not respecting their rights to enjoy the game. Of course, that’s just my own interpretation of the rule.

I’m sorry? I am confused… What are people complaining about? Are people mad that you are opening the Ogre portal and letting them know? I am very confused. In any case, report them for harassment and verbal abuse and move on.

Lets be clear here.
NOBODY deserves to be abused in this game. Nobody. You can disagree with someone’s behavior or their actions, you can even be angry, but there is no justification for being abusive.

Thank you.

No by opening the Ogre portal while everyone is distracted fighting the inquest in the next room. Like anyone is going to see that message in the midst of a fight.

You could just as easily say “By demanding they do the Ogre at a time that is inconvenient for them, the general population is disrespecting this group’s right to play and enjoy the game in their own way and therefore violating the ToS”.
Also, missing a single event does not justify hurling abuse. Gross overreaction.

Come on. How many people are actually doing the event, as opposed to the people just idling and waiting for the elemental to spawn?

This is correct. Nobody is “missing” out on loot. They just don’t want to wait because they might miss the next boss in their boss train.
People are angry because someone else doing something well within the constraints of the game is inconveniencing THEM.
The real monsters are those raging. They are more than welcome to wait until the reset but the next boss’s loot is more important. That’s their choice.
I say let them hate. It’d bring me nothing but joy if these kids get banned or something
I’m not defending those that verbally abuse others. I’m explaining the reasons WHY they’re doing it. Like when a bully constantly steals a kid’s lunch money, and then the bully wonders why everyone hates him.
Isn’t the reason this is usually done AFTER the FE is because you need the Fire Elemental to get the last charge on the key?
Yeah you can charge your key and come back later, but most people find the key during the pre-event and charge it up when the FE dies then go for the ogre….then find that it’s been done recently.
You continually do things that you know will provoke people yet you are surprised by the response? Why do you need to feel the need to announce this on the map every time if not to provoke people? I’ve done a bunch of FE where someone did exactly what you are doing except nobody felt the need to announce this to the world. When people found out after the FE they just moved on to the next boss. Zero drama.
As for the unspoken tradition there is a very obvious reason why it is like that.

There is a huge difference between getting mad and abusing others because you are mad. The OP said he didnt deserve the abuse. He is correct.
Is everyone that completes an event before Iog on, or get there, not respecting my right to enjoy the game? Is someone not respecting my right to enjoy the game by not zoning out of SW when I want to enter a zone that is full?

So it’s the tyranny of the minority over the wishes of the majority.
Now I’ve never seen anybody every announce they are opening the ogre before FE and I’m there well within any 20 minute timer. But I’ve frequently seen the aftermath of dozens upon dozens of players feeling denied that they can’t do the ogre. I haven’t seen anybody around claiming they had already open it so I haven’t seen any directed verbal hostilities toward a group of players and I wouldn’t condone it.
But the easiest way to prevent it is by going along with the majority. Azhure chose to become a lightning rod by going against the wishes of the majority and flaunting it in their face. He made the decision to force others to decide to join him and if not, hush up about it they had their chance. He is deciding on when everyone at FE can get the Ogre reward or not. He’s driving this car and he decided everyone is eating French tonight rather than Italian the majority decided and nobody else there gets to have a say.
So how can you not say deciding for everyone else is not being selfish?
RIP City of Heroes
Ignore that hate man, 99% of the people at FE will sit there for 10 minutes or more, waiting for everyone else to do the pre event. They don’t bother getting a key on their own so they don’t really have any right to complain that there is a smaller group also present who has a slightly different schedule they are working on.
This is nothing like killing a champ train boss out of order deliberately, you aren’t doing this for the sole purpose of annoying people. The bottom line is, almost everyone who is going to do FE is already there when you guys are popping ogre, if they chose to AFK in the FE room then its their own fault for missing out. Just report the vulgar ones and move along. The part I find amusing is they are clearly already just standing around waiting for FE, but this is somehow a problem for them.
All the animosity I see in this thread is based solely off of the idea that there is this order that everyone has to abide by, and that just isn’t true. His guild isn’t doing this as a big middle finger to anyone else, they are just trying to fit more events together since their own train includes more that the typical world boss hoppers do. If you didn’t actually put the effort into making a key then you have no right to complain, and if you were making a key then they just saved you the trouble since you typically show up early for FE to make a key anyway.

The best thing Anet can do is to make the Steam Ogre only spawnable after FE is killed. That would prevent Griefers/Trolls from ruining the Boss Train for everyone on the map.

I have to mirror this statement.
Everyone getting all foaming-at-the-mouth furious and pounding on their keyboard in righteous indignation because they can’t get to the Steam Ogre should stop and realize that they are raging over a single champ bag.
One. Friggen. Champ bag.
OP, at this point, I’d just say you should stop announcing it in Map chat.

Intent doesn’t matter, all that matters is the result and the result prevents everyone who don’t join him out of a champ chest and some misc blues and greens. He understand that most players do it after but that fact doesn’t matter, he’s doing it while everyone is distracted with the inquest, when nobody but him and his friends are out in that room.
It’s perfectly within his rights to do it but he knows he’s going against everyone else’s wishes, does it anyways and then gets annoyed that it generates some bad feelings toward him and his crew?
That’s what I find funny. Not expecting to upset people simply because you announced it.

Asking for people to not be abusive is not the same as asking them to not have bad feelings. Its OK to be upset. Its not OK to send abusive messages.
Kind of curious OP, how many guildies, on average, do you muster for this event?
It’s slightly similar to what happened to the OP, today it is Frostgorge events daily. Some people went to FGS, found some random champions in events and killed them for their daily. Then the map exploded at those guys because they “broke” the train.
Is that really good behavior? Not everyone has the time to do move around with the Train, and if they find events they will do them, even if the train is not there yet. Why shouldn’t they?
The best thing Anet can do is to make the Steam Ogre only spawnable after FE is killed. That would prevent Griefers/Trolls from ruining the Boss Train for everyone on the map.
Not a fan of this idea. There is plenty of time between FEs where there would be very few people would be negatively affected by someone opening the area.

They are not griefers, nor trolls, they are killing the Ogre when it is best for them and their time, not when other people tell them too.
As Behe said, he and his guild are within their rights to do Ogre whenever he feels. However, when the while map is planning to do Ogre after FE, and find that they no longer can because another group purposely completed it and denied the rest of the map a chance after the FE kill, that would count as griefing.
This is no different than when I use to go around killing champions by myself during the Queensdale Champ train and they’d start cursing and screaming. They think the game was made for them and them only. Pay them no mind and as said before, report them and continue doing you.

What they are doing isn’t even close to the definition of griefing.

Good times, good memories
If you didn’t actually put the effort into making a key then you have no right to complain, and if you were making a key then they just saved you the trouble since you typically show up early for FE to make a key anyway.I have to mirror this statement.
Everyone getting all foaming-at-the-mouth furious and pounding on their keyboard in righteous indignation because they can’t get to the Steam Ogre should stop and realize that they are raging over a single champ bag.
One. Friggen. Champ bag.OP, at this point, I’d just say you should stop announcing it in Map chat.
Or the fact that 95% of the idiots at FE wait for the 10 people who actually do pre events to do them, instead of going to the steam golem event when he announces it, they afk at the FE platform. Good riddance, they deserve to lose out, and to get banned for harassment

If a team of 10 players purposely does something to prevent an event for the other 90 players on the map, that would be griefing.
Meh. They can get over it. It’s such a petty thing to be upset about. I guess they are just spoiled and should count their blessings that their only hardship in life is if a boss was killed a few minutes too soon for them.
and I broke the thread /fix
