i wonder, how does a mount, something that can only be used outside combat, isn’t allowed in cities and will be disabled around jumping puzzles, be in any way unbalanced?
do you ppl even know what balance entails or is it just an attempt on an excuse?

it is unbalancing when it comes with any type of speed boost. This is what many want from a mount.

someone said " 50 % to 200 % speed boost" simply because other games have that.

So when speed boost is balanced …. different for different classes. A speed boost mount is unbalancing. The only way I can see it as balanced is, if the Mount occupies a utility slot, and mearly duplicates the speed boost of one of it’s abilities.

Purely cosmetic mounts is not what many pro-mount people want.

As someone once said " I want my mount to DO SOMETHING" Does that sound purely cosmetic to you?

but why does it unbalance anything, all you say is that it gives someone the ability to move faster but if everyone has a mount then it’s still balanced.
i never asked what a mount does, i asked why is a mount unbalanced.
and before you use the utility excuse again, everyone can use the mount without using a utility slot, no one, not even you or i has any advantage above anyone.

In this game, we have temporary speed boost. And the developers decided that some professions have better access to speed Boost that others. They decided that some professions can do faster speed boost, or do it more often.

That is what Gw2 is.

To give everyone a universal non-utility speed boost that is exactly the same for all, and lasts the same time for all, undoes the balancing work the devs have put into each speed boost in each profession.

They also want that if you WANT the speed boost you need to either use a specific offhand weapon…..or…a specific utility. Which obviously means swapping out another weapon or utility that may be better in combat. This is kind of obvious.

If ALL professions Now get a speed boost that lasts equally, and for the same amount of time, without either being tied to their off-hand, or the utility slot, that undoes the work the devs put Into tieing speed boost to either the offhand skill, or the utility skill.

THIS is the Game we are playing as it is envisioned by the developers.

You wish this game to be another game. You don’t wish to play the game that the developers provide. It seems to me that you dislike the game that the developers are providing, but whether you like it or not… this is the game the developers are providing.

If a speed boost mount is a deal breaker for you, all I can suggest is maybe playing another game that has speed boost mounts?

So what you are saving is to remove all player opinion base content? could of sworn this was a community fan base game. or has it turn to a political stance?

Not at all. But you need to accept just because you have an opinion about speed boost mounts and your desires for them, doesn’t mean I don’t get to tell you why I feel that your desires are bad for this game.

I have never said you shouldn’t say " I want speed boost mounts"

My only problem is when players give a multitude of reasons why speed boost mounts are a bad idea and those that want them simply repeat over and over. either

1. I don’t understand.

or

2. I disagree.

especially when they do not engage, they just say " But I want it. and I should have it. Give me reasons why I shouldn’t have it." that they then ignore.

Here is the ONLY reason those that do not want speed boost NEED.

" We are content with the developer’s current and consistent choice to not provide mounts"

I never said speed boost mount. All I want is MOUNT, I don’t care if it had buff or not, a MOUNT, what it is consider a mount not this flying broom crap. I don’t care how much it cost or how it is obtain. And thank you for not saying anything bout player base opinion it only applied when you or whoever feel like using that in an argument which this is a double standard

You cannot expect people to only engage you on " Cosmetic" only when there are 5 or 6 other posters that agree with you, that want more than just cosmetics.

If you want a cosmetics only mount there are mounts On the TP, maybe buy one of those ?

Say " you know, I dislike those three types of doughnuts, maybe you can make creuller’s or maybe cherry filled ?"

The Owner listens politely, and says " I’ll look into it."

For 2 years they don’t add any other type of doughnut. I have been talking to the owner for 2 years. week after week. Anyway, One of the other patrons comes and says to me… " You know… there is another bakery just down the block that has 40 different types of Doughnuts, maybe you should go there?"

You can see where I’m going?

I mostly agree with what you’re saying but I feel that telling people to go elsewhere to get what they want is shortsighted.

But at the end of the day the pure simple fact of the matter is this game doesn’t need mounts and from what I’ve seen most people don’t want them.

The culture of Tyria has evolved beyond the need to make beasts suffer to transport us from place to place.

This is ethical.

To force beasts to suffer to transport us, when other means are readily available is to be cruel and egocentric. This is from a Lore perspective.

From a Non-lore perspective. Just because you want a Dolyak to ride, doesn’t mean that Anet needs to redesign the game to provide one.

Before you can expect them to do so, you need to provide compelling reasons for them to devote the resources, time, and energy to provide it while many others in the community feel those resources could be used better elsewhere.

Neither:

1. It would be cool.

nor

2. I want it.

are compelling.

Please no. I can already see it: Every month a new store mount that goes 5% faster than the last one. You’ve already seen their concept for it with the new kites.

The game is already suffering from an identity crisis, I don’t want sparkle pony store mounts added on top of that.

Firstly, It is wanted not needed. And the reasons need to be compelling for ANET, not the players that want them.

Secondly, whether the group that wants mounts is “big enough” is debatable if it were “big enough” Anet would have provided mounts by now, they have been hearing this now for 2 years. It seems they have decided that the group is not “big enough”.

The way I know that those reasons are not compelling for Anet is, or that they feel the group is not “big enough” is, we have been seeing them on the forums for the past 2 years. We know Anet has read them, and we … 2 years later, neither have mounts, nor heard from Anet that they have decided to provide mounts.

Giving the same reasons over and over, and not getting mounts should tell you Anet remains unconvinced by those reasons, and you need to come up with others, to get the mounts you want.

PS: we do not need those reasons to explain why they should not be added.

The only reason we need is …

Anet closes cases Not you. That " bakery" Entenmann’s has been In Operation now for over 100 years.

And they still only provide 3 types of doughnuts.

1. Plain
2. Chocolate covered
3. Cinnamon covered.

oops forgot…

4. Powdered.

They made a calculation and they are still here. They haven’t gone out of business cause some shoppers want more variety.

Anet has similarly made a decision, and continues to make that decision.

Lastly, I do not speak for Anet, and never thought I did, this is a strawman argument. I never said I spoke for Anet, nor pretended to.

Anet speaks for Anet. and since 2 years later, we do not have a plethora of speed boost mounts… Anet has spoken.

PS: Our positions are not equal. You want Anet to use up its resources to provide something they are not providing. I want the status quo.

That means the burden is on you to provide compelling reasons for Anet to provide mounts and

1. I think they are cool
2. I want them.

Are not compelling enough it seems, judging from the lack of mounts In Gw2.

The only reason we need is.

“We are content with Anet’s decision to not provide mounts.”

And lastly…since this game does not, and has not provided mounts in 2 years…. i sincerely doubt that its " When Anet provides…" and more than likely " If…On the remotest of chances that Anet provides….."

If…on the remotest of chances that day ever arrives, I’ll decide then…and only then…. whether gw2 is worth playing. Until then… those that want mounts , have other games they can play that provide mounts.

chuckle

Ahhh, just as I said in this thread

After that it escalates to “we want more functionality” “we want to battle” etc etc.

So I will say it again: If they give an inch, players are going to demand a mile. My point has been made… yet again…

The new kites gave 5% boost. That is somewhere above an inch. Where are the people using the kites?

You are wrong.

I think Lanfear was talking about all the “crazy” (had another word typed, but don’t want the infraction) ideas that start sprouting about how mounts could be used in the game to completely change it into some other game.

Tyrian Aquatic Jousting Simulator World Tour
#idontwantthisgametobelikeyouroldgame

Correct. Anet has given the inch (the kites, to a minor extent) and as we have seen previously in the mount discussions (in both the thread I referenced and just a few posts above mine) people are on to ‘additional functionalities.’ Why they shouldn’t be just cosmetic. Why they shouldn’t just give speed boosts. Players are demanding the mile… Thus the basic premise of my point… “It’s never good enough”

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

but why does it unbalance anything, all you say is that it gives someone the ability to move faster but if everyone has a mount then it’s still balanced.
i never asked what a mount does, i asked why is a mount unbalanced.
and before you use the utility excuse again, everyone can use the mount without using a utility slot, no one, not even you or i has any advantage above anyone.

Because not every profession gets a speed boost or motility buff, and they are in fact designed to NOT have them.

and where is your prove that they are not designed to run a bit faster, better yet, what part makes them unbalanced?
in PvE a speed buff is almost essential to get to places fast enough, in sPvP it has no place regardless of profession, i can’t judge about WvW because i don’t know how essential it is out there.

the end result about mounts is simple, it’s not about if it’s needed or not, it’s about if ppl want it and there is a clear amount of players that do want them.
if you don’t want them, don’t use them but don’t demand a stop on something you don’t like, that’s just selfish.
i don’t like scepters and focuses on any profession but you don’t see me demanding Anet to remove them, they can use an improvement across the board but if i don’t like them, i just don’t use them.

Clear amount of people? Yes. An extremely small amount of people who post on the forums. And even on then the amount of opposing people to the idea still outnumbers those that do want them.

The amount of people who want mounts are an extremely small minority.

There is currently no good reason why the game needs mounts other than you want them.

Wrong. The amount of people who don’t want mounts are an extremely small minority. You have no proof of this.

You have no proof the people who want mounts are in the majority either. Most posters, on this forum don’t play the game any more. Many just come here to whine.

If you ask in game – a straw poll I did, on my server Mumble, they all said NO.

Whether most want mounts, or most want the status quo is ultimately irrelevant.

Those that want it, still have to give compelling arguments for Anet to put limited resources into providing mounts.

1. it would be cool
2. I want them.

That is what we see a lot of. lately someone said.

3. I know I can get a temporary speed boost by either swapping in a weapon that has it, or use a utility, but that is something I rather not do. I rather just have a mount.

None of these arguments are compelling.

Those of us that do not want the mounts, even if we are not the majority, need no other reason than:

" We agree with Anet’s continued decision to not provide mounts."

Even if the number of mount vs non-mount is equal, when one half wants change, and the other wants the status-quo, those that wish change have to come up with compelling arguments.

So far I haven’t seen any.

I WANT mount, I don’t care what you want or need. Anet says “play how you want to play” whenever mount come because they will come and they will CREATE revenue guess what I going to get the mount because that is what I WANT, and if YOU don’t want it then DON’T get it. capiche

Wow….thank you for the very well thought out self-centered, immature and demanding verbal tantrum. It completely slipped all our minds that Anet’s every effort should be to provide what YOU WANT. Please forgive us.

What the poster above you fails to understand is that when Anet said " Play how you want to play" the implication was " with the tools we provide."

That kind of is supposed to go without saying. it’s Not Like i can demand to be given a Blimp that drops Bombs on the enemy forts… just because " hey, they said " Play how you want to play" and I want a Blimp"

Nor can I demand a " Fort Crusher Bomb" that I place at the gates and Just click the fuse, and run then 20 seconds later…everyone in the fort is dead.

Then again.." play How you want to play" means I am not Playing How I want to play if I cannot fly a Blimp to drop fort crusher bombs from them.

I want a personal Blimp!!!!! I want Fort Crusher Bombs!!!! Anet said " Play How you want to play!!!" and this is how I want to play!

Oh yes, and whenever the enemy gets near me… all their weapons turn into balloons and all they can do is point it at me, and let the air out, and all it does is go pphhhrrmmmfhhttttttttttttttttttt.

because…"Anet said " Play How you want to play!" and that is How I want to play!!!"

Unreal. Just….. unreal.

Ugh. I know that some of you want mounts and that is fine, but I don’t think ANY time is the right time for them.

Personally, I don’t want them. I think our waypoint system is efficient and much better than having mounts whether they be cosmetic or not.

I could be wrong, but I don’t see mounts happening with the waypoint system.

What I don’t understand are things like Leo.2641’s post that Brother Grimm replied to. I’ve never seen any pro-mount people that can actually say where it would be greatly beneficial to the game as a whole. What purpose it can serve that waypoints cannot.

Also, I don’t think many understand the sheer amount of programming mounts would entail. Not just adding them to the game but all new movements and placement of every race, gender and leg/boot armor worn by any character. Mounting, sitting, dismounting, falling off, movement while riding the mount on and on. I can’t fathom why Anet would want to give themselves that kind of headache.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.

Aren’t you paying attention? Because:

1. it would be cool.
2. they want them.

and Now:

3. Anet said they can play anyway they want… and they want to play with mounts so if Anet doesn’t give them Mounts… Not sure what happens but it is bad for Anet.

Oh give me a break.

Yes, Anet did say that we could play how we wanted to play; however anyone with any common sense what so ever would realize that there would be limitations to “play as you please.” They should not have to say " you can play as you please so long as it remains within the scope and boundaries of the game as we choose to develop it" in order for people to comprehend.

Me I would never tell anyone go play WoW. Although I Play WoW , and Love mounts there, then again…they don’t have waypoints, and to be honest I hope they never do… I Love My flying carpet on WoW, I love my WP system here.

I can like each for what it offers, and accept that each does Not offer everything I might want, and that that is alright because….

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again : mounts are an unnecessary mechanic in this game that will only clutter up the game and reduce performance.

I can understand them thematically and mechanics wise in other games but they don’t fit with GW2 from those two perspectives at all.

There are often contested areas and you have to walk for several minutes across the maps (take the Modniir Ulgoth Event chain for example). I run a Guardian and do not have a permanent speed boost. Yes, I could swap my Sword/Focus, GS combo for a Staff for the speed symbol. But really. I don’t want to do this every time, cuz the Staff is not my weapon of choice. Now I have to rely on the two shouts that give me together around 30s speed buffs and wait for 30s for cooldown… It just sucks, that’s why I want a mount (aside from other stuff like: collecting, prestige, style etc.)

OMG swap a weapon out and when you get to the fight, swap it back in. Just because you run with a staff, doesn’t mean you have to fight with it too. You basically want a mount because you are super lazy.

50,000 gems in the gem store, cosmetic only, cannot use in cities/dungeons/wvw/pvp.

The game is what the game is. After two years we need to accept that it is how it is gonna be, if it were gonna be different, it would have been by now.

I myself wanted subclasses. Not gonna happen. I also wanted weapon skills to be unlocked from weapons so that players can pick and choose what 5 skills they wanted On the 1-5 slot.

Not gonna happen.

I have made my piece with that.

Time for the Mount people to Just accept, No mounts. That’s just what game we are playing. I Just Hope that the pro-mount people can just accept what it is, and find some fun in spite of Not having mounts.

If they are waiting for mounts, as things seem at the moment, they have a LONG wait ahead.

Actually specified not in WvW, but a roaming PvE zerg has the same concern. When there are 50-70 people gangpounding a boss as is, the same thing with people waiting for the boss is just something I don’t think ANet tech can handle.

It’s not just about waypoints, either. MMOs with mounts have gameplay that is designed around them.

  • Quests require you to run back and forth across the zone to find mobs or talk to NPCs.
  • Getting new skills requires you to ride back to a major city and speak to your class trainer, on a regular basis.
  • If you want to get rested XP, you have to log out at an inn. There may not even be one, in the zone you’re questing in.
  • You have to keep your “gathering skill” at an appropriate level, so you must repeatedly farm gathering nodes by riding circles around the zone, even if you don’t need these particular materials. And the nodes will disappear as soon as anyone gathers from them, which means even more riding around the map, hoping to find an untapped node.

Mounts seem like a good thing in these types of MMOs, because playing without a mount is unbearable. But GW2 isn’t built on mandatory fetch quests, competing for mobs and gathering nodes, or running back and forth arbitrarily just to waste time. Mounts would not be a good thing, or serve any purpose, in this game.

In fact, unless the mount had a movement speed buff built-in, they would actually be a burden. On foot, we can use skills that grant swiftness, or which shoot our character forward quickly — things which would not be possible while mounted. Being on a mount would actually be slower than running around on foot. Even the people who say they would like mounts for purely cosmetic reasons: I don’t think you would actually use them for travel on a regular basis. They would be like a transformation tonic, that you only use while standing around waiting for an event to start.

Eh, I don’t understand how the naysayers can determine what is compelling to Anet or not…it’s one thing to say “I/we want it” is not compelling for yourself but to assume the position of Anet is pretty ridiculous, and as a company making changes and adding things to the game is what they do on a continual basis. So 2 years without mounts is not a precedent for “there will never or /should never be mounts”

How they will be implemented if/when added is the main issue

Your personal disdain for the visual clutter is on the same level as the “selfish” desires of those that want it for cosmetic or travel reasons.

Mounts taking away from “more” important content is also your opinion, as none of you even know if Anet has seperate teams for this kind of development which would make that point moot.

Class balance for speed is only pertinent in pvp, and in-combat mobility which could be a reasonable restriction for mounts.

The only thing the customers need to do is voice their want for something, Anet can determine if it is good for the game, reasonable, implementable etc.

It would be easy to learn from the long list of games that do have mounts, and see what worked and what didnt in order to find a nice grey area that can fit with Guild Wars 2

in other words “I dont want” simply doesnt beat “I want” in a forum, people are just posting up personal grievances vs personal desires instead of having a real dialog about the best way to do mounts IF/when Anet decided to add them

Neither does “I want” beat “I don’t want”. Not wanting something in a game is as pertinent and viable as those things some people want.

Those that don’t want mounts in the game have no reason or motivation to have any kind of dialog about if/or when they may appear in the game because the don’t freakin’ want them. That sort of dialog is counterproductive to what they want which is to not have mounts.

It is also pretty pretentious and rude to claim that those that do not want mounts are airing their personal grievances while those who want them are expressing their personal desires. I have no “grievance” against mounts in games. It is just my personal desire to not want them in GW1 where I feel they have no place.

Pretty sure pretentious doesnt mean what you think it mean, as i clearly stated each side was on the same ground, sorry if my word choice was confusing.

I also clearly stated it was up to Anet, not either side having more clout than the other

Not wanting mounts is just as fine as wanting them, asserting your opinion as fact is the problem, and atleast personally, ive seen more people in favor of mounts be honest at the fact that they are indeed unnecessary and something they would enjoy if added to the game, and not standing behind scenarios of server stability or class travel balance etc…things that Anet would have surely resolved before implementation of mounts anyway

No thanks. I like being able to port to where I want if I’m the other side of the map. I don’t dance having to “run” across the world to get to where I want to go when an easy way is already being used.

Guess what? if mounts were added, you’d still be able to do this…

No mounts are needed and I am increasingly confused by the constant insistence on them for a game that has smallish maps and waypoints.

A butterfly farted somewhere … that’s a good reason for mounts I heard.

Mounts would be cool.
I don’t know why are people so against it, I don’t really see where adding mounts would ruin anything and/or be so kittenome people make it believe. If anything it would just be another gemshop item for cosmetic porposes…

Because realistic people know just how much time and resources this would take away from other content that is more relevant to the game. Mounts are a MUCH more complex feature than you can imagine. It’s not just some skin you add.

so what you are saying that anet spent years to make guild wars 2 and the map are smaller than guild wars 1 which I agreed with. Also saying that the mounts are too COMPLEX for anet to handle so we come to the conclusion that anet is a failure of what they do. that is what YOU are saying.

Obtena did not say Anet was a failure for not adding mounts to the game. Just that there are other things that are more important and relevant to the game. Anet adding a full blown mount system to the game ala WoW would take tons of dev time away from other things.

Besides that, if Anet were to ever add mounts to the game you can kitten well bet it will be in an expansion. That’s a feature you advertise to sell an expansion not something you put out there in a mini update. You can be 100% sure of that.

Yes, exactly what I am saying. There has to be a really kitten good reason to introduce something as significant as mounts into GW2 at this point. It’s not just going to happen to make RPer’s happy.

Pretty sure pretentious doesnt mean what you think it mean, as i clearly stated each side was on the same ground, sorry if my word choice was confusing.

I’m pretty sure I did. From Merriam-Webster “making usually unjustified or excessive claims”. You have no idea if everyone not wanting mounts are airing personal grievances or not. Both unjustified and excessive.

Of course, it is up to Anet whether or not mounts happen. No one said otherwise. However, it has been two years and there hasn’t even been an indication that mounts would EVER be included in the game. I would say it is a great educated and evidenced assumption on anyone thinking persons part that mounts are unlikely to ever happen. What could possibly make anyone believe that they WOULD add mounts? You may know a lot of people who want them but I know a lot of people who don’t. Many who are avidly opposed in fact. Why would they add something that would upset a large portion of the players who don’t want them?

Also, I agree that Anet would do what they had to in order to implement mounts if they were going to, but it changes many mechanics of the game not just travel. Not just in one zone but all.

So, in my opinion, it is completely fair for people to assume Anet doesn’t want mounts. When you have any kind of evidence that mounts are being considered, then make your claims that people have no clue what Anet wants. Until that time, those saying they think Anet doesn’t want mounts clearly have evidence on their side.
