The zone length was fine. Some people just wanted to be able to speed through a zone without any challenge in a matter of minutes like in world 1.
No, it wasn’t, it was too long. Outside of endurance races or some kind of survival or “horde” mode, I don’t think duration itself presents that much of a challenge.
I think W2, whatever people feel about length, could have used some fine tuning. World 1 was just fantastic and it’s hard to beat that bar. I feel like it’s kinda like Portal 1 vs Portal 2. Portal 1 was insanely amazing. Portal 2 doesn’t feel quite as fresh, but then it’s being compared to Portal 1….
editing to respond to this:
I sort of agree on that score the duration in world 2 was a little excessive, I think if they found a middle ground between W1 and W2 it would be about right the length and challenge for all players.
Yes. <3

No, just spend there time to make new dungeons or pvp game modes pls
not a silly game, why even play GW2? you can play tons of that cheap game everywhere..
Same reason you could go play other games for dungeons and/or pvp.
Please give us a keyring…
the problem with hidden caves in normal gw2 are there is NO CHEST AT ALL^^
even after jumping through a jumping puzzle u will get in 42 out of 1337 times something usefull.. maybe i should add another number to 1337 but u get what i mean.. fining hidden stuff never is of any use (usually)
while bombing a secret room and getting baubles does help u ingame
Ye I think this is my biggest dissapointment currently in gw2, I don’t find any joy in walking through the world looking for easter eggs or anything like that since most things are either linked to a vista wich kind of feels forced to visit, or there is nothing at all.

Plz show me where I can play SAB anywhere?
SAB W2 also released at the same time as Ascended weapons which meant that a lot of the PvE focus was on grind grind grind rush rush towards Ascended instead of SAB.

THIS THIS THIS.
Anet even stated many times that it was their mistake to release content AND features at the same time. That is the reason feature packs are now separate from content packs. I’m not even sure where people are getting the “info” that SAB#2 had low player participation. Even if it were true, you don’t know why.
I sort of agree on that score the duration in world 2 was a little excessive, I think if they found a middle ground between W1 and W2 it would be about right the length and challenge for all players.
Yeah, I’d agree with that. You could remove a lot of the empty space in W2’s zones and keep the trickier jumps and it would be better IMHO, just cramming “more” in a game isn’t necessarily better. It messes up the pacing.
Take HL2, for example, I love the way that game goes from corridor to open area to driving to “puzzle” section and so on, I feel the changes keep it fresher than a lot of other shooters. If every corridor in that game was 10 times as long, with 10 times as many enemies would it be better or worse? Some would say better, but for me, those sections would just become a slog. There would be no real change in the challenge, that challenge would just be more drawn out.
I still love SAB warts and all.
The opening post actually sums the whole SAB situation really well.
People who were active in the topics about SAB W2, and weren’t completely blinded by frustration, should know this. The posts are still there to be looked at and to me Josh did a great job in dealing with the whole ordeal it is a real pity he was the one who had to take the brunt of it though in more ways than one.
What happened with that release is a great example of the fact that the people who work for companies are just that people and they make mistakes. Although usually they are not allowed to admit their mistakes or talk about them as an individual while representing their company (which is something I believe Josh got reprimanded for, or something like that).
It is pretty simple to see that the content was made first and reward structure changed second. These are usually the responsibilities of different people altogether as far as I understand. The biggest mistake, in my eyes when it came to rewards was that you could no longer get stuff like Obsidian Shards out of doing SAB they have lately been giving opportunities to get that stuff from more places, you can even get stuff like mystic clovers outside mystic forge now but for back then apparently someone decided it wasn’t a good idea.
If we think about SAB as its own game, which is quite fair, the game design behind it is really good and fun. However, it is at times being held back by the tech and the fact that it is part of GW2.
Most of the issues in W2 were not out of bad design but due to bugs. Most of which were caused by the fact that their engine was never intended to facilitate this kind of content and that latency was more of a factor than they anticipated.
If you ask me they made the GW2 engine jump through quite the number of hoops to make SAB happen and even more with all the added bells and whistles for W2. It is also a fact that for W2 they did not have an actual programmer (as in engine level programmer) in their team which is why as far as I recall stuff like the dart traps were instant death because they had no way to make them just tick damage, without engine level support, while still impeding your progress in the same way as they wanted them to.
Maybe they made the zones too long when played without any of the W2 upgrades for your skills and splitting them differently might have been more manageable for players the first time through but that is entirely subjective. Personally once I got through that one bend with the geysers in Rapids I had no trouble going through the other zones of world 2, sure parts of zone 3 were excruciatingly difficult the first time through but also fun because that difficulty was not caused by bugs but by myself (as in I always knew why I failed, and the answer was not the game or lag).

If playing a classic video game and the power goes out, is your progress saved?
No, but that isn’t the fun of playing a classic video game. Moreover, power cuts aren’t nearly as common as internet drop-outs. Punishing people for having unstable connections (often not their fault) isn’t enhancing the experience.
If you’re constantly having unstable connections then you’re not going to really enjoy much else in the game either. The older games did not have auto-save and have your progressed logged every second. Internet connection issues are no different than power issues. They both impact your ability to access the game. Whether one is more common than the other doesn’t matter as their differences have no bearing in the argument.
well i had some great fun with my new character (which was still grandfathered be4 that trait system xD)
while playing him through the whole world and litterally speaking to everyone and exploring every corner and i had fun
i didnt really cleared everything in record times
neither did i got a huge amount of gold due to it
but it was really fun and even though most people would say .. it wasnt rewarding
i felt for me
it was worth doing
all npcs ive spoken and read through everything
every book.. everywhere
i had so much fun

This is a very nicely written post. Thank you.

I didn’t even look at the forums during SAB#2 because I was so in love with it. I feel like I’m part of a segment of the community that was too busy enjoying the content to realize anyone had a problem with it at the time, and now it’s sadly too late because our voices were silent when it mattered.
I’ll wait a while to ask for a refund on both coins that we bought for our accounts. I’m trying to read between the lines and hope it is a release during WvW seasons or something – since they can’t touch their beloved LS but seemingly have no issues not releasing any new valuable PvP/WvW content.
To all of those saying they they’re happy it isn’t coming back because it being around or updated takes resources from other development – remember this when the tables turn on something you care about.
I am personally a big anti LS player. I do it because it’s there, but it’s boring and short lived. To me, the amount of time and resources invested in it is laughable for the enjoyment of it. But, others really enjoy it and are hooked on it. Who am I to wish ill on them for liking it? Pretty lame.
And for the record I hate SAB – but my husband loves it and I love the weapons. He likes it enough to do everything on both of our accounts. Win win for me.

You can look up quite a telling blog post on Josh Foremans personal blog from the time of that release. I won’t link it here because I don’t want ask for an infraction.
The issues people were having the change in reward structure and the introduction of ascended crafting played a huge part in why SAB W2 was not as popular and while they addressed the issues, to the best of their ability, at the time rather quickly first impressions matter a whole lot.
Had they allowed you to buy stuff like dragonite ore or empyreal fragments for bauble bubbles, like they allowed Obsidian Shards before, that alone might have tipped the scales significantly if done right.

Very little else in the game has this issue:
Open world PvE, barely a problem at all, unless you DC just as an event is about to finish (even then, not always a problem).
PvP, annoying, but matches are short.
Dungeons, you just log back in. Again, only a problem if you DC at exactly the wrong time.
Fractals, as above.
Story instances, not nearly as long or difficult as SAB.
WvW, more annoying than in PvE as you need to walk, but nothing in terms of time loss compared to world 2 trib mode.
Why are you defending lack of save functionality?
In sab 2 they added big difficulty jump with world 2 made it very long and tedious aswell as nerfed rewards. If they really didn’t expect people to be unhappy and not want to do it i just don’t know what to say. SAB1 was perfect.
Well, this is just one more reason for me to not return in the foreseeable future, just like SAB.

If they released a Living Story where the only rewards were skins tied to hour long missions and at the same the time released a new gear tier that you couldn’t get from LS I’m sure people would end up focusing on the gear tier and not the LS.
When World 2 came out instead of doing tribulation mode I went for my ascended gear. Why? Because I’m competitive. Was I happy? I was miserable every second of grinding for that wretched gear and still haven’t finished to this day it was so bad. I thought SAB would return so I could do trib mode but I will never get the chance…
Despite the ascended gear I still did world 2 (when it was hard) and bought a continue coin. That day was the most fun I had in years.
OccupySab thread just got locked
Riot anyone?!
I’ll bring the warbanners and FGS’
This is a friendly reminder to SAB promoters to cut the threats of violence towards developers (and anything potentially targeting fellow players). There is absolutely no place for that. Most of us love the devs – they have developed an amazing game and I’m sure they are all amazing people. And we are here because we love the game that they’ve made.
And so under no circumstance are threats of violence ever acceptable. Please don’t let it happen again.

You:
- SAB is fun, please bring it back.
ANet:
- SAB uses a lot of bandwidth and doesn’t generate enough revenue, do not bring it back.
It’s money, guys/gals. Your fun is not a metric that ANet tracks.

I wager it got locked because it resembled a petition too much. If I recall correctly there is something in the Code of Conduct on the forums that says those are a no no. They also locked the topic of the other guy who made some logos for it.
Well it would be fascinating to see what Anet sais about all this, if they choose to reply that is.
so 30 active ppl on the forums start the QQ and think SAB must be back
but no one care of the thousands that lost fate in the game and follow the phrase “if you don’t like it do not play it” no one care of them and the changes they wanted RIGHT ?
so i say to all SAB lobbyists SAB IS GONE FOREVER !
if you don’t like it do not play gw2 go play super mario 2
SAB was stupid idea that somehow got green light it look super unrealistic in gw2 world and i am happy that is gone !
Send the unruly Taimi back to school so she knows how to deal in the real world.
Give off duty soldiers time to relax after fighting Mordremoth.
Let Moto silently reopen SAB to continue testing.
We don’t need the new worlds, but please just let it reopen so we have something else to play around in! Let it count towards daily dungeons. Add it to the rotation with Crab Toss, Sanctum Sprint, etc. Don’t let my infinite continue coin to gather more dust. I want to go back and earn more of the toad weapons!

Why are you defending lack of save functionality?
Like my post stated, SAB is a throwback to the classic, older games which did not have auto-save. To add this would take away a major attribute of the games back then. A lot of the newer generation of players have never played those games so they really have no idea how they were back then.

Ah Svetli, again! Your opinions are always so fascinating. Tell me more about how unrealistic SAB is in a world full of plant people wielding greatswords made out of space.
Comon folks, its not like we can expect jumping puzzles to be a major part of the game…
Stop oppressing Asura scientists Arenanet >:( It’s not like they already caused major disasters and at least one ecological disaster with a reactor… uh…
Just let us continue testing okay?

If this is true i quit this dumb kittening game, i dont even want a refund on that continue coin cause i’ll never log in to this kittenty game again.
SAB W2 also released at the same time as Ascended weapons which meant that a lot of the PvE focus was on grind grind grind rush rush towards Ascended instead of SAB.
I keep bringing this up as well…. people wanted 500 weaponsmith and their shiny new ascended weapons took priority over SAB. I think Anets data on how popular SAB W2 is skewed by this dual release of content…
You could farm like crazy and get ascended, or do the (long and challenging) SAB W2 for virtually no reward.

Half a day at the entrance to SAB… Still there’s a decent amount of people with me… Yet no reply from ArenaNet…It’s disappointing
Am I the only one that finds it funny that people somehow always takes everything as PR or lies/false information when they say something that would be considered positive by much of the player base, but when it is something negative it is an absolute truth as soon as it is uttered, despite how unconfirmed it is?
