The Cantha Thread [Merged]
Could we at least have some Canthan skins? I wouldn’t mind spending some gems for additional character customization.
Oh, but we just got that nice, new fan focus. That’s vaguely Canthan themed. Aren’t you satisfied?

Dude, thank you….
Well, ANet also said they were not doing expansions, but they are. Things change, if enough people want something, they would be crazy not to, purely for the money.
I prefer Elona :|
Agreed. I feel like there are more compelling reasons to go there, too; Kralk’s encroachment on the Crystal Desert and the Kryta-hating Palawa Joko are both pre-existing concerns for our heroes to investigate.

When did they say they weren’t doing expansions ?

I went back and looked at some articles to find the quote and found that they didn’t in-fact say they weren’t ever going to do an expansion, they said they were not looking at it and had no plans for one (in 2012/13). Apologies
So, this thread was opened a while ago. People were hoping to see something from Guild Wars 1. Maybe get to explore parts of the world that are lost in the mist of time because we are unable to cross the crystal desert to elona or sail to cantha.
Now we have HoT. It’s the first expansion that we have seen in Guild Wars 2. Alot of debates going on over it right now. Not gonna touch on those with a ten foot pole, (oddly I know what that phase means now).
But I want Anet to remember this thread. I want them to think about the stuff we have been asking for since day one. There is alot of world out there yet. I want to explore it, my boots need new paths to roam and lets face it. I don’t know if HoT is gonna be enough.
If they make a Cantha expansion, will be free for new players, and 200$ for existing accounts (without additional slots, Deluxe pack will be 250$)

Please let’s not bring that to this thread, there are already a hundred threads talking about that. I want Cantha, not salt.

lol, yeah, was helping a guildie tonight working on his titles, in EoTN He had never really played GW1. He was like, My god Destroyers are such a joke in GW2, here one of them can destroy my whole party.
Ahhh good times.
ultimately i think what’s needed is some clear interest from asian (and…mediterranean? middle eastern? where was elona meant to be?) in a return to cantha (and elona). So that NCSoft knows they won’t be alienating a large portion of their playerbase.
The… ‘simple’, i guess, resolution would just be to make cantha less unambiguous asian. evolve it, incorporate other cultural elements, create something distinct from kryta/ascalon but still not clearly paralleling a real world culture.

I mean, this is pretty much what they already did with Kryta. I don’t think there’s a need to make it unambiguously Asian, they just need to make sure they incorporate plenty of fantasy and don’t abuse stereotypes.
right, kryta was quite african before, wasnt’ it?
Ok, first of all, I know the devs are aware of this, but if the 53-page, two-year-old thread doesn’t have enough weight yet, let me just pile on a bit more on the “We Want Cantha” side of things.
I know it’s the devs’ game, and it’s their baby, but juuuuuuuust in case they’re having trouble with the concept of “Well, Human is just one race now, we don’t want /different/ Humans competing with them” then let me present just a few crack-pot ideas.
You need new races? I’ve got three.
1. Tengu.
I haven’t even read this thread but I would be flabbergasted to learn if nobody had suggested this before.
2. Kurzick.
We’ve seen the Dragons’ influence corrupt other races. We have Iceblood and Crystalized and Mordremoth’d people walking around Tyria right now. Why couldn’t something have happened to our Canthan neighbors? Since we already have Sylvari as a tree-influenced race, I would suggest something that everybody associates very closely with the Kurzick: Amber. Imagine a legion of gothic-clad warriors, the sun glinting off their amber-flecked skin, and their eyes burning a baleful gold, charging down the hill at…
3: Luxons.
Just like the influence of the dragons has mutated the Kurzicks into being riddled with amber, the Luxons have been affected as well. Only this is not a copy of the Kurzick idea with a Jade-tinted pallet swap (you only wish I would let you go that easily). The Luxons, having forever been dependent on their giant sea creatures, have started to become one with them. The characters hailing from Cavalon will have evolved to live on land or sea, taking on such marine aspects as gills, webbed hands, fins, or even chitinous shells. Even open up different skin colors for them, like Shrip or Sharkskin.
There you go, if the reason we don’t have Cantha in the works was because you didn’t want to make two different groups of Humans, I just fixed it, free of charge.
There still dragons in Elona and Cantha, i guess we will explore this countries in other xpacS ! HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE !!!!!

From all the Lore i’ve read, there are no confirmed dragons in Cantha or Elona. The reason we’re unable to travel there is because of the unnamed Deep Sea Dragon and it’s minions blocking all passage to either island state. Unless that dragon gets dealt with (which I fear is something that will never happen, because underwater combat is atrocious), we might never see those continents again.

kitten ~~ I hope you’re wrong ! And there is so much potential in underwater combat ! Such a waste !

Just reading threads while bored in work on a Friday afternoon and clicked the link. Wow, as the first song began it took me right back to the beginning. Factions had just been released and I was standing in a shop trying to decide whether to buy it or some other game. I’d never even heard of an MMORPG before and had no idea what one was.
So, so glad I decided to buy Factions (and subsequently all the set, GW2 & HoT). Since the first moment the game started I was hooked, played almost daily since then.
I miss Cantha but I think it’s more a time and place I miss and not Factions so much. I’d really like to see Cantha back in GW as a modern version changed by events but still with the Oriental influence….. and maybe the Ritualist.
Welcome to the Internet, exposing characters since the early 80’s.
right, kryta was quite african before, wasnt’ it?
I’ve always felt it was more Polynesian of possibly South American.

ahh yeah, you could easily be right
I love how Cantha is so much more popular than Elona despite the fact that Elona has a known enemy in Palawa Joko and Cantha has literally no known enemies (dead xenophobic emperor is most likely dead).

i think it’s more that we have no reason to think that elona couldn’t happen in the future. Whereas Cantha’s future is in significantly more doubt
Considering I am new to the franchise, I want to see Elona as well as Cantha.
But I want to see Cantha more as I happen to like both Chinese and Japanese culture. The only reason I could see Anet not wanting to explore Cantha within Guild Wars 2 is because most western cultures distastefully BLEND all of the Asian cultures into one. And if Anet was to do that with GW2, it would offend the Chinese playerbase.
Asians hate that. (The blending of their culture with Japanese culture). And I don’t blame them. You shouldn’t lump in distinct cultures into one. That happens with the Black/African American community. For another comparison, it’s like making an American Cowboy with a British accent and mannerisms. It’s blending two different cultures that aren’t exactly the same. Sure, Americans and most Eurpoeans would just laugh off such a character or even a setting, but that is not the case with Eastern culture.
But back on topic. Most Western games with Asian themes blend together Japanese and Chinese cultures and both sides (more China then Japan) take offense to that. That deters sales and sours the relationship between companies. But that doesn’t mean Western companies have to be afraid to use Eastern cultures in their works. They just have to do it right. Blizzard did it correct with Mists of Pandaria; they just had to remodel some of the Pandaren culture to reflect Chinese culture and not blend it in altogether making a mess.
So yeah. I don’t think that issue is holding back a Cantha expansion as much as people believe. Thus the only other issue is time and resources. I don’t want expansions to be pumped out too often as I want GW2 as a whole to have a long shelf life. So we’ll just have to wait and see. But the demand is there.
I want to push for Cantha and its continent.

the problem is that cantha already exists in GW1, changing it just because of political problems will make cantha a different place.
it’s ether cantha as we know it (which is mixed in to one culture) or no cantha at all.
I have mixed Asian roots and i freakin loved Cantha! I even loved the dirty underground. The maps were beautiful, i stayed on the Island til max lvl, the Music was great! Also loved the Charakter Designs. The buildings, the enemys. EVERYTHING! I wanna see them all again, I wanna see the Palace, the Jade sea, the Forrest! I ´ve stayed hours in Cantha about 10k hours! I also liked Elona, but I fell in love with Cantha.
pls give it back
“NCsoft was firm in its decision to stay away from “Asian” themes and keep it “universal.” ArenaNet had to make adjustments quickly.
This has probably already been mentioned but NCsoft was referring to Divinity’s Reach, not the game as a whole. Originally there was a Canthan district to the city and it was going to be released as part of Divinity’s Reach but beta testers in Asia didn’t like it, they preferred a universal look to the otherwise European inspired city. For that reason, the Canthan district was turned into a giant sink hole to retain the uniform appearance to the city. I believe in the lore the Canthan district existed before getting sucked into the earth. As for why they didn’t rebuild an area for the ethnic Canthans? I have no idea but my head canon would say that a lot of Canthans didn’t make it out of that disaster, not enough to justify rebuilding a district for them.
By the way, NPC chat in the city (I think) also mentions Canthan sailors still washed up on shores throughout Tyria. That means Cantha is still around and we may yet see it in the future.

I love how this thread just keeps going and going while Anet quietly sits back and watches. I’d like to think they are waiting to see how HoT goes before they decide on Cantha. Let them see if they can handle 1 new Maguuma region before they tackle a whole continent.

Not like they have a choice, if NcSoft is the one with the bucks then they make the rules.
The Queens Jubilee hiding the Cantha sector confused me, making me think Anet was trying to forget Cantha
but then Heart of Thorns brings Shiro to the Revanant.
well ok…he’s a notable character.
and now. Mini Mystical Dragon mini.
how is this relevant?
Cantha, the dragon festival.
Unlike “western themed Tyria”, where we mostly fight dragons,
Cantha had (strange) dragons that they didn’t always fight with(if they did at all…kinda foggy on memory)
these dragons, are similar to the Mystical Dragon Mini….if not copy pasted.
is Anet trying to tell us Cantha’s going to be relevant soon?
will we finally discover whats become of the country that the best GW1 expansion(lore wise…and trailer wise) country.
is Cantha the next expansion?
or perhaps an event?
or could we be having Canthans traveling over to discover whats happened to us since the rise of orr
-its all the more possible considering that recently, in the news
China is removing some restrictions on games.
mostly to consoles, but also to ALOT of games.
—————————————————————————————————————————-
could this be the green light for Anet to return to Cantha? (perhaps bubbles is there? or Primordeus?)
after all, having all the eldar dragons in Tyria seems kinda….lame
if these “god like dragons” all exist on this continent….then its not that threatening.
theres Cantha and Elona
if the dragons want Tyria. and ignore those 2 continents(specially Cantha with its massive magic) then why should we care? if we all die, they still live and will repopulate here when the dragons go to sleep again
(edited by arenta.2953)
Cantha still missing from the content:(
Guild Wars 3 takes place in Cantha while Tyria burns under the destruction of the elder dragons?
I actually came back to gw2 cuz I got hit by a nostalgia wave from gw factions lol
Hi there,
Like many of you, I do hope that somedays we could be able to see Cantha in Guild Wars 2, regardless of the sad decision from NCSoft.
I have bought Guild Wars Factions (that I didn’t play to) just to see this whole lore taking part into the game. Just so say how much I’d like to see Cantha back to GW2.
I really hope we get Cantha one day.
And it wouldn’t be too hard storywise.
With every dragon killed we earn more and more trust of the Tengu, at some point we play together with them. Perhaps a dragon attacks and destroys their own little world and after the dragons are defeated they ask us to help them regaining their home. (And in a perfect world we will be able to play tengu then)
And we know that the order still got contacts in Cantha.
PS: Is there something known about the corruption shiro brought to Cantha? Perhaps you could extend the dragon-influence-cleansing to the point where you could clean Cantha?
All we wanted was a GvG.
Tengu+Cantha or riot seriously 3 years anet give us something spectacular. actually im kidding such short notice just give us tengu for now. i mean you guys did have them in development for game release and didnt follow through is all. Mild distraction and you forgot i think you just procrastinated so come on you get paid at least $10 more an hour than i do and you dont have to bust your kitten literally i love you guys and the game but its still being wasted. I will admit some of the profession changes are amazing and rev is cool but its wayyyy too little given 3 years
Here is a reminder to you guys at anet gw1 3 years 2 expanions 4 new professions hundreds if not thousands of quests factions elite dungeons doa uw fow + more skills weapons armor story heroes pets etc etc etc. Much smaller team then did more than run circles around your current huge team compared to them idk what happened. But i certainly hope you still have all members of the original team and they are taking a much deserved break from all the work the did for gw1. I’ll probably get banned cause you guys dont want to hear this but hell even bungie is doing better than you with destiny 1 year after release and doing an expansion do in the next 2 weeks new subclasses for each class armor level cap that’s never insane frankly as easy if not easier to level there as gw2. I kmow you guys can do probably the best gaming work for mmo’s in the world no doubt but you need to do it not just have us believing that you can. I for one and probably many others know your potential and we’ve seen your work so come on <3 i know its my opinion and everyone has one but i hope you listen and dont rage
Let the Asians complain. It is a work of fiction, and so Cantha is CANTHAN.
There are bigger issues in the world people.
Crystal Desert

Pricing issues aside, if the expansion is successful Cantha and Elona may become a reality sooner than we think. They’ve been releasing gem store items that are both GW Prophecies and Cantha related, so it is possible they’re testing the market for interest in Cantha. Releasing a new Elder dragon encounter per expansion would have room to include new zones such as:
Deep Sea Dragon → Cantha
Kralkatorrik → Elona
Perhaps Primordius → Tengu lore and the depths of Tyria
or Jormag could open up the Northern portions of the map.
As the game ages, they may loosen up the restraints on what can and can’t be done simply because they wish to retain the player base they have.
Oh come on, let’s stop using that excuse of “Asian don’t like mixing one culture with another”, else ANet wouldn’t have made if possible to use an outfit heavily inspired from China with a weapon heavily inspired from Japan. Maybe at first it was problematic due to NCSoft influence on ANet, but didn’t they somehow retreat a bit from GW2? With more freedom, and such a fandom towards Cantha, it would be really stupid to ignore the incoming moniez (we know that EVERYONE would pay for Cantha).
Also, if the problem of culture mixing is such a big deal… Divide Cantha into provinces/zones: Shing Jea would be Japanese, Kaineng Chinese, Jade Sea Korean, and Echov… Nevermind, it’s German.
Sticking to Tyria would be the worst scenario possible for GW2. Cantha should come back, even in an expansion (if we have to go South through Elona). But there is always a way to introduce it before.
Guild Wars isn’t only Tyria, it’s Cantha and Elona too. Denying it would be like saying Harry Potter exists without Hogwarts.
Son of Elonia.
right, kryta was quite african before, wasnt’ it?
I wanna see some African American influence. Either Trahearne betrays us or we betray him depending on the path we take, and an African American character modeled after Wesley Snipes takes his place. He’s a top mover and shaker in the Priory and we don’t know about him yet but the current leader of the priory recommends him to take Trahearne’s place. I originally thought it’d be a great idea to make the player character take on the leader role but this recommendation would leave room for introducing an awesome character.
Also, if the problem of culture mixing is such a big deal… Divide Cantha into provinces/zones: Shing Jea would be Japanese, Kaineng Chinese, Jade Sea Korean, and Echov… Nevermind, it’s German.
I’ve made similar suggestions like this one on similar threads before and I feel like this might work out. Although part of me can’t help but think this might cause other problems to arise from this, but I might just be imagining things.

I think Cantha needs a radical change like with the Charr taking over Ascalon. I say use it as an excuse to introduce a completely new race into the game the dragon people.
I, for one, would like to see representations of as many of the developed human cultures as possible.
Asian (Cantha), Hispanic and Latino, Anglo, African and Middle Eastern (Elona)….
Every player wants to feel like they can be fully immersed in the story, like there is a place for them within the cultures of Tyria. I think GW 1 really tried to do that with Cantha and Elona, and I wish they would continue, and improve upon the that tradition in GW 2.
Don’t expect Cantha, Elona or any major area. Anet doesn’t like money.
I’ve made similar suggestions like this one on similar threads before and I feel like this might work out. Although part of me can’t help but think this might cause other problems to arise from this, but I might just be imagining things.
Great mins think alike I’ve also been posting that for months (if not years) after I first read bout this “allergy” to mixes.

Well, that would make it worse: I assume people like Cantha for its atmosphere, its people. Sticking the name “Cantha” on something too different is not a good idea. While I would like new races with new backgrounds, I would prefer it to happen on a new continent rather than changing something I knew. For example, I know Italy has the best pizza, but if I were to go there and see that sushi is the only food available, I would be kittened
Son of Elonia.
I think all the Sylvari should move back to Cantha.
