The "Inspect Gear" Discussion.
Well elitist are pretty annoying and probably why the function doesn’t exist. Although it’d be neat if there was a cosmetic inspect so I could see what that armor looked on my character. :P
Well that is my point, we need at least AR inspection. If you don’t have enough AR you will be kicked ANYWAY. This will just save time for all player.
And elitism is already there, just see FotM LFG lvl 30 posts, all ask for AR witch IS gearcheck. Wanna farm cof? See how fast you will find group as warrior and how fast as engi. Hmm, it sounds like some other game, what’s it name again?
If you look back at the posts, many have agreed on the AR point. Less have agreed on the MF point but still a significant number. The point of contention is opening up their gear choices to others for a variety of reasons.
And yes, elitism has found its way into the game. I don’t think that is a reason to strife for ever more elitism. I don’t see it as a positive thing.
Umm what?
Don’t worry, I am pretty sure Sovta is actually on our side in this debate. He making a parody of the usual elitist talk but exaggerating the snobbery and hostility to make them look bad.
Ok, explain to me WHY is agony in this game then if not for gear check?
To encourage you to join a guild and run the hardest content in the game with people you know and not pug it? Maybe some things should not be puggable?
It was 2 vs 20 but its ok we got’em both!
Umm what?

Ok, link me some guild with 100+ active members focusing on fractals and arah. Thanks in advance.
A way to check AR and maybe MF is what groups need, nothing more. Oh and a way to see the real names of items, so if someone links an item that was transmuted, we should be able to see the original name so we can go get the skin if we like it. Linking a superb skin that is named “Berserker’s Sword” isn’t very helpful

Do your own homework.
The best part of this is people want to be elitist and pugs. How does that work anywhere but WoW? O yeah it doesn’t and that’s why everyone here is not playing wow.
It was 2 vs 20 but its ok we got’em both!
Only groups i see asking for gearchecks are cof speedrunners, arah, and 20+ fractals, and inspect would change nothing about them.
Yea right, it won’t change a bit. It’s not like there is some agony or something.
You expect to enter 20+fracts with no AR, and wish to hide that from your group?
Even with no inspect, thats not….a very wise thing to do, and you SHOULD expect to be kicked for it ( especially now that you can kick and inv someone else midway throu )
IF anything inspect will save alot of time and hassle to the 4 other people.
If you want a fast efficient dungeon run then join a guild that specializes in running dungeons.
NO to inspect gear buttons.
if everyone should be able to play the game the way he wants. Then everyone should have the right to open a dungeon group and picking only the best dps geared players for it, if thats the way HE wants to play this game.
beeing able to play the game the way you want, doesnt mean others have to take you into every dungeon with that attitude, because they can play it how and with whoever they want as well. If someone asks strictly for exotic geared glasscannons and you run a bunkerbuild and ask for an invite, you are nothing more than a liar, just go find another group that accepts you “the way you want to play”, anet has done nothing wrong there, everyone IS able to play the game he wants.
i have nothing against a gearcheck, id even wish for a dps meter, because the way I WANT to play, is always maximizing, optimizing and getting the best out of my character and my build, instead of purely theorycrafting in the forums with haters and whiners (ranger forum, who almost never even take the pet into “dmg calculations” … ).
It’s different, you want others to play the way you want.
You want to check their gear/spec to see if they are playing your way, and GW2 does not support that kind of mentality.
You know what? Just ask people to ping their gear.
Inspect is already in, it’s just a 2-way thing now as it should be.

Wouldn’t the other people in group had to pass the “gear check” and be in full agreement with the conditions? If they were in disagreement they could simply reform the group with the odd geared person. Why should the right of one person to play the way they want be more important that the same right of 4 other people?
Personally, I would not like this feature implemented. It would cause the gear check drama for dungeons; I don’t do dungeons in this game but for other MMOs where there was the inspect gear feature, it was insanely hard to get in a group.
Furthermore, if someone finds a really good looking piece of gear and wants to show it off. That person should have the option of telling the other players what gear it actually is. This makes these ‘specialty’ items actually unique. Also, having inspect gear would also show your stats and some people do not like that. GW2 is not a good example since it does not have much build variety; however, in most MMOs people like to keep their own builds to themselves.
I do dungeon and WvWvW with my guildmates and friends, also i dont want people to check my armors setup just to copy what i use and later ask me about a build.
(LX) Legion
No. It should never be implemented due to that fact it promotes elitism. The last thing anyone wants is to be kicked from a dungeon party simply because their gear isn’t on par. It just divides the community.
On the other hand, it might be good to sniff out magic find leeches. Cons outweigh the pros though.
I would say yes to this. But not because i would judge people by their stats, traits or w.e. I would use it to kick people off my dungeon (or even my WvW group, yes people use MF gear in WvW) that is using MF gear. I mean you are sacrificing one stat, that could help your team, just to benefit yourself.

That’s untrue, they want you to be yourself and just not invite you to their party since they want to play the way they want too.
And people sometimes ping one kind of armor and is actually using another set.
I really don’t care. But when people say “they should be allowed to play anyway they want.” The same is true that other people should allowed to invite who ever they want. It’s a two way thing. And there’s no right or wrong answer. On one side it divide the community. On the other side, you do get many slackers, and people should be allowed to not party with slackers if they choose be.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, they could just show the amount of MF and AR a character has only. Nothing more
No tnx please. I can’t remember how many times a group of us 70-80 people wipe at AC explo whereas some groups with 40-50s clear it with ease.
Every time I see this debate (first time was around 2 years before GW2 launched) it seems to be relatively split down the middle between those who want it and those who don’t.
There’s really one thing that makes me think it shouldn’t be in.
If 50% want it and 50% don’t then 50% are unhappy. There are workarounds for those who want an inspect feature but don’t have it. There is no workaround for those who don’t want it if there is an inspect feature.
Seems to me that not having an inspect feature is the most fair solution.

Ya I really don’t think gear inspection is a good idea. For AR you can ask people to ping your gear.
The problem is you might get some new guy who just reach level80 wearing rares trying to get exotic but just can’t seem to get a group, since no one want them.
But I do think they should do something about mf. Not necessary to allow people to inspect mf but make mf group wide so people actually welcome mf instead of hate it. But I don’t know if it’ll make it worse. There might be elitist mf group and mf group only.
(edited by laokoko.7403)
i dont support inspect gear. i saw the effects of this particular feature in WoW. I would be decently geared for an instance dungeon but because i didnt have certain stats i got booted from the group. People in this game have an approach around this, they require you to link your gear. I carry 2 sets of gear, my berserker and my explorer gear. when they ask me to link my gear i link my berserker gear but i actually wear my explorer gear in the dungeon and it goes just as smoothly. but some are getting booted after linking “trash” gear
And you are EXACTLY the reason some people want an inspect option.
Gear inspection is a terrible idea. Elitism already exists, so don’t make it worse.
Though this ship has sailed, I think the mistake was putting stats onto gear in the first place. Once you put stats onto gear, there is going to be a demand for inspection.
By all means, let us have inspect and let us block inspect. Then, when people in other threads say, “You don’t need Exotic/Ascended gear to play GW2.” people can reply, “I know, but I need it to pass gear checks.”
There are no “pros” to implementing this. You divide the community by allowing an elitist mentality to poison the well. How I choose to gear and spec works well for me… your opinion of my gear and spec is irrelevant … as long as i’m playing alone and not in a group.
i thought i was being funny.
You didn’t do a very good job at it. I play a mesmer, and the way I choose to play my mesmer may not be cookie cutter, but I have a balanced blend of d/c/s that works well both in a solo or group setting. I never have problems completing Fractals or dungeons and have respectable WvW stats as well. I don’t need a spreadsheet to be effective.
I could care less what spec you play. As long as you don’t have MF gear to leech on the efforts of others and have decent enough agony resistance to survive in fractals. That’s pretty much my two golden rules for grouping.
Of course. I can be an elitist at times and go off on pet peeves about how rangers should have healing spring and thieves should always bring shadow refuge. But that’s not ‘get out of my group’ kick worthy.
Well hell, just ask then! I don’t sport any MF gear (I don’t consider that a part of a balanced build personally) and I’ll be happy to link the agony resist. We don’t need an inspect system added that will ultimately cause griefing.
You really think the ones that are hiding it will tell you? There’s always asking people to link their gear, but they could always link another set easily.
Then you have people like this:
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/5510635#5510635
Who take advantage of others due to no inspect feature.

If they were in disagreement they could simply reform the group with the odd geared person. Why should the right of one person to play the way they want be more important that the same right of 4 other people?
As said above you can already ask people to ping their gear so inspect isn’t needed.
Inspect achieves nothing that can’t be done already on this aspect, all it adds is the ability to spy gear of people without their consent.
Lately we’ve gotten so many features from WoW that I think we’re fine with not picking anymore from that game in a good while, including things like gear spying.

ya but let me try to understand this… Unless it is for pvp, why do you care if people look at your gear?
I mean is your build such a big secret or something? Unless you are worried elitist might exclude you because your gear arn’t optimal(which I understand, it happened to me before)
(edited by laokoko.7403)
no. gear check its just stupid. if people want to discriminate against other players because of the gear they wear they should not be given help in doing so.
@ OP:
go check out CoF P1 section on gw2lfg… gear elitism is already alive and kicking and a feature like gear checks will only make it worse. So no. They shouldn’t.
Think about it like this… Would you, in RL, say to someone: “Yo, homie..before we go into this house…what kind of underwear you have on, dog?”…and, that is why it shouldn’t be implemented into “Guild Wars 2”
No
It was bad in other games it will be bad in this game..

If said house was infested with monsters and the type of underwear you wore mattered if I would live or die? Sure.
I hate analogies. They are so funny when you try to apply them to games.
I remember one thread where ascended gear was likened to papaya’s and aids. It was quite ridiculous.
could be ‘’party only’’ option which will need ‘’the one which is gonna be inspected to accept the inspection for be able to see what he wears’’
yes iam elitist pro player which rage for many stuff and i dont like to carry MF people or n00bs
Inspect gear is an elitest POS system that I hope never comes to GW2
GW2 does NOT need it as all builds work fine in any situation. If gear gets involved…so what? You should really want a skill rating right?
Just say NO to gear inspection. What I’m wearing and my build is is no one’s business but my own.
So first off, for those who don’t know what it is.
“Inspecting gear” is a feature where you can check anyones gears in a UI. By right clicking or something else.
My view on this:
It would make it easier to check out someones gear if you’re curious. You wouldn’t have to link every piece.
But then again, It would also increase the level of “gear checking” for dungeons, etc. At that would pollute the community. “You must have x gear to enter this group”. Just like the “You have to be warrior to join this group”, only worse.
It would also make it easier to bash somone because of their gear.
These are the only things i can think about when it comes to this topic.
So, i ask you.
Should it be implented? Or not? Give us your opinion!
No but we should be able to preview gear on the trader before buying it. Its kitten that we can’t.

Umm…agreed to the fullest
But I think they mean they want to see yer junk afore you run with them in their devastation party
Nope, sorry. If you want to sniff my undies, you have to pay.
….
But seriously guys, I don’t WANT to do “elite” or speed runs of anything. Make sure you let me know that’s what you’re looking for, and I’ll just stay away and we’ll all be happy. I’d much rather see a Bio/Description field that can be called up instead. Anyone that wants, can feel free to put their stats in there.
P.S.: Dishonest people with Magic Find gear would just wait until they’re inside and have a moment, then quickly change their “good” gear to the MF set. Gear Inspection won’t solve that problem.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

That don’t even make sense. People can swap now because there’s no gear inspection. If there is gear inspection you know who is swapping since you can check them mid dungeon.

Which is around when you can start to figure out who’s lied about their gear right now, without inspect. Right?
If you plan to spend all your time checking gear to make sure nobody’s switching on you, then odds are good you’ll be the one dragging the party down because you’re so distracted. People WILL do this, sane or not. If most people do a check 5 minutes in, then they’ll learn to wait a bit longer before switching gear to still get what they can out of it.
Blegh, it’s late. Sorry if I’m not wording this right. Sleepy time.

Quite honestly, I’ll check people’s gear often not because I care if they are swapping but because I’m bored(for cosmetic or build). You think right clicking someone’s portrait and look at their gear take more than 5 second? And most dungeon runs do have many downtimes waiting for people.
I don’t think people will risk getting kicked because most of the reward for dungeon is in the end.
I dont’ think what you said make too much sense, but I’m not you. Maybe what you said make sense to you and other people.

ANet promotes this as a skill-based game, so equipment has little to do with it.
The final and concluding answer is no.
ANet promotes this as a skill-based game, so equipment has little to do with it.

Actually most of the times equipment does show people are more skilled because they are more experienced.
If I see a person with full dungeon set, I know they are experienced. They may still be bad but the chance are much lower.
I mean, I just did a fotm10, and wipe after wipe we finally reached jade maw. And I finally realize why the group wipe so much because not a single person have any agony except of me. I think one of them never even did any fractal before because we are always waiting for him during the cliffside fractals. If I join a group with agony requirement this will never happen.
Anyway, I should find other thing to do. I really don’t care if there is gear inspection. I just think many of things people said don’t make sense.
On this issue, it has been my experience that regardless of gear, MF, no MF, GC, BB, or some other random setup, the successful dungeon runs have been with groups where someone took charge and directed the group. Groups that I have been less successful in have often had little or no communication.
It is my experience that gear does not dictate a good run, but communication does.
So first off, for those who don’t know what it is.

This will lead to this sort of situation:
Person A: Uh hum, I see you’re not wearing a berserker exotic gear instead you’re wearing a knights exotics gear. In my opinion this is not good enough and you will be letting the team down.
Person B: I’m wearing knights gear because it synergises well with my traits, I actually will be doing the same/similar if not more damage in the big picture wearing these gear.
Person A: No you are wrong, I am party leader so i’m always correct. Berserker GOD rwar rawr awr. RESPECT MAA AUTHORITYYY
Person B: …. whut?
Thus the elitist syndrome: Thinking you know better than another player because you’re a 1337.
Also, lack of gear inspection also promotes privacy and basic social skills. e.g. if I or someone likes me armor, I would pm them (they pm me) and ask what i’m wearing. I would then kindly link them this armor and we would have a small chat and thank each other and be on our way. Whereas inspect gear would just be, right click, oh thats the armor and it would feel like you kitten them without them even knowing :o

I hate most if not all Dungeon armor looks (the stats can be OK). I usually sport my “inexperienced” self-crafted Draconic set. I guess I had to farm my dungeon armor in order to show my “leetness” level?
In short, gear proves nothing, and is usually used to unfairly decide who are the “really good players.” Inspect gear = intrusive game mechanic that would hamper GW2’s community in the long run. I get to decide which gear, builds, and stats better suit my playstyle and allies-not a random “meta” from someone who’s supposed to be “good/experienced” at the game (be it dungeons, fractals, etc.)
I hate telling people how to play or have fun, much less stating that they are wrong for choosing a wildly different playstyle/build/gear rather than my own. It’s so arrogant to pretend that people must adopt my preferred playstyle in order to be “effective” at the game, even if “my way” has worked for me or others-in this game in particular, without any rigid roles, there are myriads of ways to skin a cat.

Why are you trying to force your gear on people who obviously do not want you in it? Just leave, get a new group. Move on with life.

Simply because he’s not forcing himself in-you are forcing him out. A false “leet” mentality will grow in the community, and soon enough DUE to inspect gear, most people will NOT want to wear anything but the “required, elite” gear to be allowed in groups.
In short, it’s harder to “move on with life” in the game when the people that want to play with the principle of “freedom of choice” becomes the minority due to inspect gear mechanics.
Inspecting for Stats bores me.
Inspecting for Skins, on the other hand, intrigues me.
Personally I liked the way we did it in GW1. We could click on anything and show people. It was not up to the other person to “inspect” another, but you had the option of showing people your build, your armor, you could even SEND them a code of your build, and save builds to a file. Oh how I miss that.
In short, gear proves nothing, and is usually used to unfairly decide who are the “really good players.”
Gear dont’ prove anything?
It proves you are wearing crafted gear.
It proves you are wearing exotic gear.
It proves you may or may not have done dungeon.
And having infused ring means you have done at least fotm 10.
No you can’t tell if a low level is an alt or not but if you see someone low level with no achievement ponit you know chances are he most likely isn’t experienced.
I never say I looked at draconic gear and I say you are a newbie. I’ll say you are wearing crafted gear and you may or may not be dungeon newbie.
Please stop the silly argument.
And you know what? People are generally selfish. The elitist is selfish because they dont’ want to include others who slow them down. And many people dont’ look at themself and think maybe they are slowing the group down. Either way I just see many selfish people.
