The "Inspect Gear" Discussion.
Yes please, so I can convince myself to uninstall the game xD
You mean you haven’t found one yet….What’s wrong with you?
Inspect gear is nothing more then elitism at it’s best with the scum already out there demanding to see every single stat before even inviting you.
Skill>gear min/maxing
Really its true. The only thing inspection does is allow all the anal kitten to create an artificial barrier on people joining teams. A bad player is a bad player, doesnt matter if he or she is in Exo’s carrying a legendary weapon if they suck at playing. Similarly a good player in rares can easily keep up with an exo team if they are smart enough and play well.
In short; Inspect gear is a bad idea, full stop. Thats why the devs didnt put it in.

Listen dude. There is no barrier for you to do dungeon. The only barrier is you can’t join those group which require a gear check.
You said other people shouldn’t discriminate against you because you have bad gear or no ar. Why are you discriminating other people similar as you? Form your own group. And dont’ insist you should be allowed to join those gear checked group.
You shouldn’t be discriminated but you are discriminating other people similar as you?
(edited by laokoko.7403)
I don’t like this. It will just create a whole new level of being selective in dungeons. Some players would like to keep their build private and privacy should be respected. You can always ask another player to link their equipment and then its their choice to do it or not. Don’t like it? then don’t play with them.

Excuse me but what the hell are your talking about? Who said I have bad gear? Really you need to learn to read the information properly.
I said I as a player would RATHER have a good player in sub powered gear than a bad player in max gear in my team. Why? Because skill trumps stats every single time. A “gear check” is a moronic way to make a team. The ONLY gear requirement this game has is in fractals above 10 needing some AR. Since anyone can get AR resistance from laurels/fractal relics, that is not a problem.
What is a problem is fools barring other players based on statistics alone. This is why the devs did not implement an inspection tool in the first place.
And FYI I have 80s fully decked out in exos and with an AR specced item (Asc. amu.).
(edited by Lexandro.1456)
no people need to not be segregated based on the gear they choose or the items they use or the skill set. thus, its what would happen if this stupid idea was EVER considered by anet…
so you can wear full MF, leech off the party, and get away with it riiightt?
people who wear MF gear or sigil of LUCK in dungeons disgust me. Like, get the hell away from me or my party. I’m not about to spend my time and effort knowing that things could’ve run much faster had you NOT worn MF gear.

Ok my mistake. My “you” is a broder sense of people with bad gear no ar thinking they should be allowed to join those group with gear check. That sounds better?
Why do those people think they should be allowed to join? There isn’t other group that dont’ have those requirement?
Why dont’ those people stop discriminating themself and form a group together and work on something. I mean is there a shortage of dungeon group that don’t ask for gear check?
And if “I” (or in short for other so called elitist) dont’ want to play with you. I “dont’ have to” play with you. It is not my job to play with a person in mf, masterwork, or 0 ar if I dont’ want to.
And your right. Skill does matter. That’s why besides “gear/ar” many group also asked for “experienced” player. And most important of all there is no “skill” check so it’s hard to check skill besides those people having agony ring on average is most likely more skilled because they at least succeeded in the dungeon before.

Next up, people who have the Sigil of Life also told to “GTFO” from parties since it only helps them heal. And since most heals are self only, it’s not helping the party.
Inspection is good.
It gives me information, which will effect positively on who to keep or who to kick.
Which is why it has no place on GW2.

well if those people dotn’ want to play with other people that use sigil of life they have to?
It’s like me telling a good looking girl she should date me because I said so. Ya I mean she shouldn’t discriminate me because I’m a 60 year bold guy or something.
I mean she can do whatever she want. She can date who ever she likes. I mean if she want to date only old guy and not young guy that’s her choice too right?

how about only the item is displayed, no stats or anyting.
how about only the item is displayed, no stats or anyting.
I dont’ think that helps. since most people know the item stats unless it is transmuted.
Just by looking at the item I know it is “most likely” what item. It is hard to tell for crafted item, but besides that, most experienced people know just by looking.

Exactly why I totally oppose this “my way or the highway” mentality-it not only applies to MF gear but also to ANY gear that doesn’t subscribe to the artificial precepts of the Dungeon/Fractal “runner.” If I respect anyone’s desire to run Berserker gear, they should also respect my wish to wear whichever armor and weapon setup I want.
Optimization is individual-dependant, not specific gear-dependant.

You got some fingers, you can type can’t you? So just ask and that’s it. And if you want to be 100% sure just find a guild group. I find it sneaky to inspect people without having to tell them and without them having a chance to avoid it. So make it an option to show gear and I’m fine.
There is no legitimate and reasonable argument against it.
“People will be elitist!!!”
People can be elitist right now. And so what? Don’t play with them. You’re decrying the attitude of people whom you are trying to play with, but you’ll still play with them because their very attitude demonstrates they’re competent, and therefore assure you a nice piggy back ride. And don’t say “no that isn’t it!”, if it isn’t then why are you playing with people you don’t like? Even for the most neglected of dungeons/areas you can easily cobble together a party with whatever specifications you wish. If you don’t like a group’s attitude don’t kittening play with them.
“I don’t like people knowing my gear!!!”
That’s as legitimate an argument as someone saying they don’t like people knowing their character, so you shouldn’t allow people to see other person’s characters. It doesn’t affect you in any way. You’re creating a problem that doesn’t exist. Deal with it.
“I don’t like it!”
Don’t use it.
Feel free to point out your own arguments, but rest assured I’ll point out they’re equally flawed. Maybe there is a legitimate argument against gear/stat inspect, but I haven’t heard it yet. Every single argument I’ve ever read against it is ignorant and misguided at best, and utterly mentally defective most of the time.
Honestly, most of the people I see complaining seem to be the kind of players that know they’re bad, and are afraid that if other people learn that, they’ll be unable to piggy back off of competent players anymore. Truly my heart bleeds for you.

ya I mean the problem is really people do hide. When asking people to link gear, they link half of the gear and hide the rest. I mean there are times when people ask for gear check and the guy spend 5 minutes to waste people’s time and when you finally realize he won’t link and you have to kick him and find another person. Not only that when putting requirement in gwlfg, people without those requirement do try to join.
And lastly you get a group and there are those people who get angry when people start asking for gear check.
But my “grip” is not with gear check. My “grip” is with people that think everyone should play with them even if they dont’ want to.
I mean people talked about elitist. When those people that don’t meet gear check are infact doing the same thing which is trying to join the elitist group.
I dont’ have a problem weather gear checking is implemented either. Me personally, I just want gear check so if I see some cool looking armor I know what it is. Or if I’m interested in what build they are using, I can learn from them.
ya and stop telling me to find a guild group. Why don’t those people with mf, no ar try to join a guild group with mf or no ar. Well because it’s not exactly easy to find a group. I can’t just log in at any time and find 4 other guildmates that want to do what I want to do and meet those gear check.

stop right there elitist. YOU DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT TO SEE MY GEAR AT ALL. why? because this isn’t wow. THERE IS NO HOLY TRINITY

You don’t have the right to hide your gear either. Neither of us has any rights, in fact. Nobody is speaking about rights.
And yes, this isn’t WoW. But there are also bad players and kittenty builds. I don’t care for either. And if you don’t like it, don’t play with me. Nobody forces you to. I merely don’t wish to be forced to play with these people either. Surely that’s as sensible as it gets.

actually I do, why? because its not my gear that affects the dungeon. its my skill. its partially my build. My gear does not affect a dungeon. my ability to play the game affects a dungeon.

Listen you are perfectly right. I don’t have a problem this game dont’ have gear check.
I have a problem when people tell me I need to play with them even if I dont’ want to.
You have no right to tell me to play with you if you don’t link your gear ok?
I might get offtopic, “but” my main grip is if I don’t want to play with people in “no ar, mf gear, or non exotic”, I don’t “have to do it”. Which is what many people think I have to do even if I don’t want to.
And quite honestly I hardly ask for gear check or ar check besides speed run. And usually in speed run, I’m not the one asking, it is usually the other people setting the group asking.
(edited by laokoko.7403)
shrug. I guess everyone have the right to complain. Since people are basically selfish.
They basically think everyone else should play with them even if they dont’ want to. Why do I have to play with you because you are new to the game, wearing masterwork or have no ar.
I mean I laugh at all those calling other people elitist and they dont’ look at themself and realize how selfish they are.
I don’t really care about gear inspection. I just find that as an interesting human behavior. I suppose that’s how people are and maybe I should act that way myself.
yes… because using a logical fallacy is a great way to prove a point.

Come on, don’t play dumb… Your gear affects a lot as well. Put two players of equal skill running a dungeon, one with whites and blues, and one fully exotic, and they will not finish at the same time or as easily – not by a kittening landslide.
And you’ve still managed to avoid the crux of the matter: If you don’t like my party’s “rules”, why are you so desperate to play with me? Make your own party. Nobody’s stopping you.

your party should not have rules.
This should be a non-debate.
Those who want gear check already have it… when you make yourself a little group… demand an equipment ping… those people that don’t mind that sort of stuff will ping their gear.
Everyone who doesn’t want to cater to your elitist bullkitten can refuse.
Everyone is happy. End of discussion. No one is forced to play with anyone… and no time was lost.
Surely if that was the case you would have no reason to object to inspect. After all, we’re just doing the exact same thing but saving you the trouble. If you don’t like the group don’t join it. It’s easier, more streamlined, and way less time is wasted for either party without affecting or injuring either in any possible way whatsoever.
Except you can simply keep a normal set of armor on your inventory and link that, while using your MF gear. Which makes me think that people like you are less honest people who are simply disgruntled by a potential feature that wouldn’t affect them at all, and more dishonest players trying to protect their ability to piggy back off of better players.

People come up with some really iffy reasons to kick other players. And it’s not even restricted to kicking; some people will take the opportunity to sit around giving unsolicited opinions on other players’ gear choices if they can see them (whether those opinions are correct or not).
I disliked that in WoW, the best way to do things was basically to let other people gear and play your character for you. There was an established meta for builds, stats, and rotations, and your job was to collect the correct armor and weapons and then push the right buttons. That was how the game was tuned, so arguably there was a reason for raid leaders to be able to look at the gear of the people they were taking along and say, “Okay, you’re not going to be able to do enough damage to get us through the gear check fight, so finish getting full epics and then come back and talk to me.” This was a game that measured player success in increments of a hundred or so damage numbers; that’s how important stats and builds are in WoW.
They are not that important in GW2, and the difference between tiers is not a make-or-break situation. There is really no reason someone’s gear should be anyone else’s business, especially since MMO players are historically bad at figuring out what’s useful to discriminate on the basis of (see: WoW, again, and people demanding ridiculous gearscore levels to do the most basic content, without really knowing what they were even asking for). If gear is that important to you, ask people what they’re wearing and why before inviting them. Ask what their build is, so you know why they’re geared the way they are. Be familiar with every class, so that you don’t end up looking ignorant for refusing to take someone with a useful build just because you don’t recognize it and their gearing choices. And if they don’t want to tell you, well, you don’t have to play with them.
This should be a non-debate.

Oh I do object… because screw gear check… that’s why.
If you want to see my gear, ask me. The inspect gear only causes trouble… and I am 100% against it.
We have an equipment ping… use it.
Oh I do object… because screw gear check… that’s why.
That’s not a reason.
If you want to see my gear, ask me.
But I don’t trust you. I wouldn’t trust you with the lint in my pocket, let alone with telling me the truth.
The inspect gear only causes trouble…
Such as….?
have an equipment ping… use it.
What’s “an equipment ping”? Don’t say it’s the ability to link the gear in chat. That’s worthless for this purpose. That only tells me what gear you own, not what gear you have equipped.
This should be a non-debate.

Why not just have a party option which have inspect gear and one without. That way people can choose to do whatever they want.
It became quite annoying to ask people to ping gear. And some of them take forever, either because they are slow or they just try to hide it and get in the group.

I’ll put it this way. Go to gwlfg, check AC. Do you realize something different? ya there are far less group. And every group is level80 only now. Everyone have their own opinion. If you think gear check isn’t important, I respected that. But apparently I think many other players do. You should respect that too.
I dont’ have a problem either way with gear check. I think “maybe” set up a option for group to have gear check enable/disable, and you can’t change it after the group is set up. And if people that don’t want to join the group with gear check enable, they can do whatever them want.

Or just have it, and by it existing it would be an option by default: Want it, use it, don’t want it, don’t use it.
There’s no legitimate reason to try and hide your gear/build.

Here’s the point. Here’s you missing the point. Here’s me trying laboriously to bring it back to show you.
Here’s the horse, isn’t he nice? We don’t actually have horses, but that’s okay, run with it I’m working on a budget.
Here’s the slippery slope, which has happened in every MMO ever when you started making it socially okay to segregate based on gear. Here’s where we started doing that already with “Berserker only, 3 War, 1 Mes, 1 Guardian” runs. Here’s where we start giving people validation they’re correct by inspecting people they think are inferior and using the gear they see to formulate the argument of why the person stinks.
Here’s where “inspect” comes in and I have to deal with more people trying to argue that because my gear isn’t top-shelf I must not be useful. Here’s where I point out I’m a ranger, that’s our default mode. Here’s where they laugh and I don’t get a group, and so I decide I need to go kill something. Here’s where a Risen uses my head for a bowling ball. It gets a strike.
Here’s where people tell me “slippery slope” is a fallacy and arguing from innocence. Here’s where I point out the argument has been used tirelessly in regards to Ascended gear so much it’s taken as fact, so if it’s taken as fact it’s fair game. Here’s where I’m told it’s not the same thing at all, even though it really is.
Here’s where I shake my head slowly and sit back because arguing over the internet is an ultimately pointless debate. Here’s where I sell the horse to Hasbro for their new show by convincing them it’s a unicorn and retire for the rest of my life. Drinking from glasses which have fruit on little sticks in them and something highly alcoholic.
By it’s very nature, the pug community belongs to the casual crowd – it’s a pickup group. If players want to discriminate, then the onus is on them to discriminate – form guilds, create alliances, and build a friends list of like-minded people. It’s silly to ask casuals to make an extra effort to form casual pick-up groups.
If they add gear inspect, the elitist will just join the first available group, because they won’t want to suffer waiting, and then they’ll try to enforce their rules ad hoc. It will make the entire pug community toxic for casuals.
Why not just have a party option which have inspect gear and one without. That way people can choose to do whatever they want.
It became quite annoying to ask people to ping gear. And some of them take forever, either because they are slow or they just try to hide it and get in the group.
Or just have it, and by it existing it would be an option by default: Want it, use it, don’t want it, don’t use it.
There’s no legitimate reason to try and hide your gear/build.
By that same logic there would be no legitimate reason to have curtains in your home…
It’s my character… not yours. I don’t want you looking in my house… I don’t want you looking in my desk… I don’t want you snooping through my documents files… I don’t want you checking out my guild vault…. I don’t want you perusing my account vault… I don’t want you checking out my build… I don’t want you checking out my gear… I don’t want you perusing the list of my achievements…
If you want to know something about my account… you ask. And I choose whether I share that information or not.

^In short, this. Inspect gear has no place on GW2, because as seen on this thread, it promotes a negative attitude among players, when elitists just can go play with each other without any community-disruptive tool like that.
next youll want us to show you our skin color….
no people need to not be segregated based on the gear they choose or the items they use or the skill set. thus, its what would happen if this stupid idea was EVER considered by anet…
so you can wear full MF, leech off the party, and get away with it riiightt?
people who wear MF gear or sigil of LUCK in dungeons disgust me. Like, get the hell away from me or my party. I’m not about to spend my time and effort knowing that things could’ve run much faster had you NOT worn MF gear.
Next up, people who have the Sigil of Life also told to “GTFO” from parties since it only helps them heal. And since most heals are self only, it’s not helping the party.
well if those people dotn’ want to play with other people that use sigil of life they have to?
It’s like me telling a good looking girl she should date me because I said so. Ya I mean she shouldn’t discriminate me because I’m a 60 year bold guy or something.
I mean she can do whatever she want. She can date who ever she likes. I mean if she want to date only old guy and not young guy that’s her choice too right?

You know what you sound like? You sound like those pvp players in Ultima Online. Oh wait there shouldn’t be pve server. It segregate the population. Since if those pve players left they have no people to gank. So those pve players should be forced to be ganked even if they dont’ want.
If people dont’ want to play with you that’s their choice. And listen to me, class balance is out of the players distriction. If you think your ranger isn’t getting a group tell Anet to balance the class. If people dont’ want to play with you because they think ranger is inferior, that’s not their problem.
And please stop telling me gear don’t matter in “speed runs”. Yes you dont’ get in the group because you arn’t wearing berserker. If you meant to tell me you can some how do a cof run starting from open gate in 5 minutes in knight gear, cleric gear or whatever I’m fine with it. But reality is it is not possible. It doesn’t matter how good you are. There is always a cap on how fast you can go with wearing for example knight gear.
And the funny thing? There are non berserker memser/warrior cof group. Why don’t you just join those group. Beside that, if that is discriminating. Maybe everyone asking for guardian in high level fotm is discriminating too. Since that’s kind of the trend too.

It’s not your house. It’s your character. It’s your performance. Comparatively it’s like asking to join a racing team with your car and refusing, or acting shocked, when they try to have a look at your engine.
Why aren’t you making a fuss about the lack of an option that lets you turn off your character model? After all, people shouldn’t be allowed to see your character if you don’t want them too! Additionally it’s hard to see the parallel between your character and your house unless you also happen to keep private and/or personal information hidden somewhere in your traits.
next youll want us to show you our skin color….
The charr will likely agree with me, that doesn’t matter. What matters is whether or not there’s enough meat for smoking over a fire later, and whether the rest of you is useful for anything.
It’s my reason… you should learn to deal with other peoples reason. Screw gear check… that not good enough for you?
No. It’s not a reason, it’s an illogical emotional response. I’m sure there’s a reason for that, as I’m sure it’s far less altruistic than you’d have yourself believe, but you haven’t provided it.
I don’t care whether you trust me… I like telling gear checkers to suck eggs… If you want to check my gear, I want the chance to tell you to sod off, even if my “gear score” meets your approval.
That’s fair. But why would you want to play with me then? If you hate me so much, why would you -ever- play with me?
Just say no to invasive game mechanics. Why? Because of a hundred reasons in this thread already mentioned… it’s the attitude that comes with gear checking… it’s the elitist bullkitten that arises from being able to “inspect” another player and pass judgement on them.
You want to screen your parties? Use the equipment ping… if they refuse, you can choose not to party with them. If they refuse and tell you to suck eggs… good for them.
You are a politician at heart. Quite an adept of eliciting emotional response, while divinely terrified of providing any solid argument, because you know you have none.
My original post started with pointing out that there haven’t been any legitimate arguments in this thread (or ever, in fact) againts inspect gear. If you’re bringing nothing new to the table, don’t bother.
There have been quite a few arguments against it-they just don’t favor your point of view, and your brain quickly dismisses them, not even taking them into consideration. If you would be more fair to other people’s opinions other than your own, you would at least see the reasoning in other people’s comments.
For instance, to dismiss bluewander as a “politician” (and I do hate politics, btw) and rejecting his opinion without even considering it, you are not really wanting to debate anything, but rather trolling about what you know you will never change your mind about (you’ve made up your mind about the issue, so even valid arguments will be dismissed as invalid.)
It’s my reason… you should learn to deal with other peoples reason. Screw gear check… that not good enough for you?

There is no legitimate arguments for having it either… only player preference.
And you are right… by forcing you to ask about my build to screen me… I get the chance to “play my way” and choose not to play with you. When they give you the tool to look me over and judge me without my knowledge… they take that away from me.
And it isn’t an illogical response… all we need to do is look at the history of the community in every MMO ever that had a gear check. That’s enough for me. I don’t like it… I don’t want it. That’s a reason… that’s a VERY GOOD reason… it’s the only valid reason there is. Everything else is just justifications for an opinion in one direction or another.
This isn’t a debate… I have no interest in debating with you. I never started debating with you. I have no interest in repeating all the reasons that have already been presented in this threat that you have dismissed. Why? Because you dismissed them… that means you agree with me… this isn’t a debate to you at all… you never started debating…

Except I wasn’t, I was in favor of not having to watch my back to be sure it didn’t spontaneously combust due to a stealthy spellcaster dropping Harm, Flame Strike Paralyze, Energy Bolt on me. Usually in that order. I was almost always the gank-ee in that game.
But even I can sit back and go: “yes, that separation really did split the populace quite a bit”. However, this was an inevitable result of allowing open-world PvP where people who were skilled and preparedd could pretty much kill with impunity and not be punished very much.
Ultima Online and the game preceding it (Meridian 59) are why I have a psychological block against actually being good at PvP in games.

I don’t care if people don’t want to play with me because I’m a ranger. I will usually find a group anyway. Much like I will eventually find a group with magic find on (if I still had that gear), or if inspect is put in and “gear check” becomes a norm.
That’s not what I think is bad. What I think is bad is giving people reinforcement to say “yes, it’s absolutely okay to kick people because of their gear, because it’s important” which is one silent thing that the ability to inspect and directly check gear says. Yes, it can also be “look at that cool sword, what the heck is it?” but that’s not the only thing it winds up saying.
By the way, I really do rag on the ranger only because:
- I play one, and understand the basic functionality of roughly 75% of the class.
- I actually don’t have problems with everything people says I should be.
- I kill krait and Risen Nobles for sport and lolz.
It would be nice to be able to inspect other players, look at their achievements, see what they transmuted, how good their gear is, or anything that marks personal achievement or seeing if they’re wearing full trash gear in a dungeon which would be very helpful. It’s sometimes like a death knight trying to tank with full dps/heals gear while in unholy presence.
**It should have been implemented at launch, why they didn’t I have no clue.

As far as I am concerned, anyone who will reject you in a party for being a Ranger is actually playing another game in their head while playing GW2. ANY and all classes can be awesome. Even bugged as many if not all are. That’s even worse elitism than silly gear checks. Even though I use a Guardian, wouldn’t it be sheer discrimination to choose a fair guardian player over an excellent Ranger based on “ANet’s lack of balancing”? How subjective can that be? Whether it is 5 Rangers, 3 Necromancers and 2 Engineers, any content can be conquered-don’t let the misinformed convince you otherwise.
I hope they don’t bring in inspection. I carry around a full set of Berserker gear for when people ask me to “Ping” my stats, but I am always wearing my full Magic Find set because I want more money.

A piece of armor is not a performance. You’ve caught yourself in your own poor logic loop. Player skill determines their performance… and the gear they choose enhaces the playstyle they prefer that meshes with their skill that creates their performance. I have yet to see a set of pauldrons solo Lupicus. Have you?
And I CAN turn my character model off… when I’m tired of it I can log off or even delete it. Didn’t consider that did you?
It doesn’t matter whether there is anything personal in someone’s account or not… it doesn’t matter whether they have anything to hide or not… it doesn’t matter whether they have dirty little secrets or not. You don’t have the right to look at it without their knowledge.
As for your race car analogy… did you miss where they needed to ask to see my engine? Yeah…. I would let them WHEN THEY ASKED… but I would break their trolly little fingers for touching my ride without my permission.
Whether it is 5 Rangers, 3 Necromancers and 2 Engineers, any content can be conquered-don’t let the misinformed convince you otherwise.
I’m remembering hearing all the time how Rangers stunk on ice way back in Everquest, and then seeing “team kill-steal” on raids which was 5 rangers and a wizard. Wherein we would pop “Trueshot” when the target hit 10% health and the wizard would just empty his mana all at once as fast as he could.
I’m remembering Guild Wars 1 where everyone was laughing about rangers and pets and I had a group of 8 rangers do all the Crystal Desert missions and reach Droknar’s Forge about two hours after starting. (Including one of them who proclaimed a new record time on beating down the Doppleganger.)
I’m remembering grouping with a bunch of rangers on week one in Queensdale overflow and just tearing apart the whole of Altar Brook Vale from the waterfalls to the garrison and having an absolute blast.
I’m remembering being the last person standing at Grenth (several times, but not every time) a couple nights in a row now because I wasn’t standing in the red rings of gravity-based death.
I love it
I only want to see peoples gear so I know what they’re wearing. I only go by visuals and I’ve seen people that look really nice, and I would like to know what they’re wearing without being rude and asking.
tl;dr: ANet please implement gear inspect feature. Non-elitists, you will still be able to party with people like you, but you will no longer reduce the effectiveness of elitist runs with your casual builds.
Elitists can ask other elitists to join their group, there your problem is solved.
“Looking for 2 more elitists for dungeon run”… we already have posts like this.
Yeah. Snob LFG other leet snobs for frac/misc dungeon. Prov creds and provide urine sample
