Was running around in WvW last night with a group where one person was wearing one of these things. It’s loud, it’s annoying, it’s repetitive, and the only way to shut it up is to turn my dialogue volume completely down.

Now.

Imagine running around in a group of people that had, say, a dozen of these. It would drive most people insane. I shouldn’t have to turn my dialogue completely off to not hear this thing (and seriously, it talks a LOT). I’m aware that adding an additional setting just to disable hearing it is probably not feasible, but can we just make it so other people don’t hear your annoying backpack if they’re in WvW or PvP or something? I’m sure some people find its dialogue to be funny or witty, but hearing “TURBO MODE ENGAGED” or whateverthehell every time I warhorn someone with it gets really old, really fast.

As a counter point, I get very annoyed by hearing “I could outrun a centaur” all the time in the same setting. I don’t see this as any different than the other repetitive phrases I constantly hear.

I don’t know why it was added, personally I have the instruments turn off completely because I never liked them. I would put them in with this thing because to me they are both unnecessary. However I do understand people like the instruments. I just don’t happen to be one of them.

Most normal human beings after a while tune certain things out that they repetitively hear over and over again…so it would be with this, regardless of the volume. You’ve heard of the saying ‘one ear and out the other’, it doesn’t just apply to ignoring people, it also applies to the human brains ability to tune out repetitive sounds.

The second I saw the announcement for this item on the GW2 website that was immediate thought. Who on earth thought it would be a good idea to insert an item that has repetitive phrases that people don’t really have a way of escaping.

I’m not turning the dialogue slider down, I love the in game dialogue, it’s too quiet as it is and I want to be able to hear what NPC’s are saying. I don’t want to be forced to hear some stupid backpack talking.

They need a big table in the options to toggle certain sound effects and voiceovers on/off. In other games you can do this by replacing or deleting the offending .mp3 files. But since GW2 puts everything into one humungous 20GB file you can’t do that.

Talking golem? Just another reason to perform Asura genocide.

Back to a serious note. I find my sense of immersion ruined by Quaggan backpacks, talking backpacks and quite a few other eye/ear candy. However, I look at them as necessary evils. Selling these items supports the game. So, I have little choice but to accept and ignore them. I find I can ignore the visuals easily enough. I play with my headphones hung on the edge of the desk. Can’t hear a thing. Though I might prefer to hear the music, extended play with the phones on gives a headache and I’d rather do without the sound than do with the pain.

I’d like to call it the “Grief-o-Tron.”

Selling pitch: " Hey… Do you like griefing? Well, son, you’ve come to the right place!!! You too can be the kitten-hole of your group! That’s right! Buy one of these and immediately start Griefing your own community TODAY!"

And for those of you who think this thread and others like it are not warranted… there is a reason why Anet created the “player instrument slider” – to keep people from hearing unwanted “noise” if the player hearing the noise didn’t want to. Not everyone that buys this thing is a griefer, but just by reading some of the above comments, this can be (and is) used as a griefing tool.

Anet, can we please have a sound slider to deal with this? (Preferably, exclusively, but I’d go for throwing it into the player instrument slider as opposed to the dialog volume slider which it is a part of today.)

I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

You cant grief with this. Its limited to one line per 30 seconds and selected by the game. Its not any more annoying than hearing “For greater justice!”. So I am highly amused by people complaining about it. Makes the 500 gems well spent.

The above is proven wrong by the below. If you are buying something not because you enjoy it for yourself but, as you have admitted in this thread, so that you can force it upon others who do not wish it, and then admit that you consider spending money/gems in order to cause others displeasure to be a good thing then you have proven that it can be used to grief and that you either are or intend to do so yourself.

Someone who buys a backpack because they like how their character looks with it on is very different than someone who buys and uses something for the admitted purpose (at least in part) of imposing it on those who dislike it and who then opposes suggestions that would allow him to keep the thing he likes without imposing it on others.

You can grief with it because the player’s actions cause it to say certain things. Taken from the wiki:

If you cast swiftness, it says one of the following:

“Faster. Faster!”
“Turbo—mode—engaged!”
“You—can’t—catch—us!”

Bottom line, I don’t want to hear that kitten. But I don’t mind hearing other NPC conversation dialog. I want a volume slider to turn this back pack, like player instrument volume, off.

But hey, if we’re going to grief, kitten-it, let’s do it right – Open World PVP!

I was considering the Job-o-Tron for my Asuran Engineer, but unfortunately it continues in the great GW2 tradition of backpacks being woefully teeny-tiny on characters of that race. It looks like he has an ostrich egg on his back. No sale (on any backpacks for my Asuran characters) until such time as I no longer need a magnifying glass to see if he’s wearing it.

And yes, it would be best if Job-o-Tron were only audible to the player wearing it.

Perfectly agree I love my backpack, but I cringe everytime I hear this line. As for the main topic, I made my point earlier. This backpiece is no different than the normal sayings the races say. In particular I hear “I can outrun a centaur” so much it gets on my nerves.
