Oh you fly a kite and imagine you are going faster, and really do! Hmmm. All that made me think of was this:

http://www.northofearth.com/cultofthewind/

Yes, it is a game where:

“In Cult of the Wind, players compete and cooperate in ritualistic multi-player human dogfights, complete with imaginary weapons, pretend explosions, and airplane noises made with their mouths. Shower your friends in a hail of imaginary bullets and proclaim, “I got you! You have to lie down,” to which they respond, “Nuh-uh, I have a shield.” You argue about whether or not airplanes can have shields, meanwhile some other guy does a cannonball onto your head while whistling. It’s great. "

Whelp, at least I don’t have to make “kite noises” with my mouth for it to work!

Ugh, Anet… Why?

Because people will not shut up about demanding things like this “mount”, and much like other minor inclusions they said “eh, whatever” and threw it in so it wouldn’t be utterly destructive to the game.

A lot of you guys are missing what Xenon is arguing about here I think. Regardless, here’s how I see the mount situation though:

1) I wouldn’t want the screen clutter of increasingly elaborate mounts (shiny things sell in cash shops). However, Anet could eventually provide an option to show other player’s mounts, I would be fine in this situation

2) Social pressure to have a speed boost to keep up. I’m not too sure about this one, warhorn is still useful to run because of (more importantly than the speed buff imho) cripple removal and blasting. I’m pretty sure classes without the perma-swiftness will still get helped by other classes regardless. Even then, there are very few situations where you can’t just WP for this to be a big issue afaik as long as it’s disabled for pvp situations

If you’re an unsatisfied customer you should be allowed to voice your opinion without being criticized. The “entitled gamer generation” has always been there, people just seem to recognize it during specific moments rather than always.

Imo, mounts should not be added because the game was originally designed to not have them. If they do add mounts, then they would likely have to release larger maps because the current ones are way too small for mounts. The other reason I’m against the idea is because the cash shop is already a large deter for newer players, throwing a ton of mounts in there would only make it worse. In addition, it would also become monetized like crazy, which would further the “gold grind endgame” that is thrown around on various forums.

I would not be against mounts if:
1) Maps were made larger and enemy mechanics prevented you from being able to run through a group of enemies.
2) Most mounts are acquirable in game for a modest amount of farming
3) Not usable in cities

People say mounts are less social? why because people can ride past a fight without joining? and portals skipping 10 zones in one port is more social how? really? I wouldn’t use portals if there was mounts and I guarantee I’d be a hell of a lot more involved with other players then all the port loving anti mounts types.

I doubt it. It would probably be more like a bundle that grants a passive boost while you’re moving, much like an engineer bundle.

That’s exactly what a mount is essentially. It’s a thing you activate that gives you some sort of cosmetic change + a speed buff. Whats to stop Anet from going down this slippery slope? Here’s the progression:

1. kites
2. kites with speed buffs
3. replace kite with horse, keep speed buff
4. increase speed buff on horse
5. copy/paste horse with speed buff on to elephant/mammoth/etc
6. copy/paste previous onto charr steam engine tank
7. copy/paste ad nauseum to all kinds of ground creatures
8. increase speed buff even more
9. add tiers of “better” mounts with extra armor which require grind and crafting
10. add special abilities like merchants riding shotgun
11. add unique mounts that require absurd RNG to obtain (like time-lost proto from wow)
12. add flying mounts

I’m sure if we jumped straight to step 12, people would flip out and rage at Anet. However over the course of 5 years… People would be acclimated to each step gradually, and before you know it GW2 is a freaking circus of crap it never needed because it already works just fine without mounts in the first place.

Assuming the rest happened, I would highly doubt number 12 would be an issue. Keep in mind that WoW, which is really the mount game, is cutting down flying mounts for their expac later this year. And as for GW2, the world isn’t really open enough to enjoy flying mounts which isn’t even good for the game to begin with.

Using them would suck by virtue of being able to fly from one end of the map to the other faster than a waypoint load screen.

I ? Karkas.

When someone suggests adding mounts in the game (with 25%, 33% or even 0% speed boost), you complain saying that “we don’t need speed boost, we have WP”, “we don’t want mounts because it makes people rushing” (even if we suggest cosmetic mounts with 0% speed boost …).
And now, a kite is not the same for you ? Just because we don’t sit on it ? Because the character hold it in his hand ?
A kite or a mount with 33% speed boost is just the same ! Just forget about the animation !

Disagree. You can voice your displeasure and opinion as often and as loudly as you want, but such comments are ALWAYS open to criticism from those that don’t share your displeasure.

You have a right to stand up to be heard but others also have the right to speak out against your ideas. You can also voice your complaints about the rude and immature nature of the heckling, but you can’t say they don’t have the right to do it.

Lol. This reminds me of the ‘slippery slope’ some were sure the game was on before launch when it was discovered there would be, ‘gasp’, Boosters in the Gem Shop.

This has pretty much been part of my own argument for Mounts: we already sell speed boosters in the gemshop, so why not?

The only big argument that really does seem valid to me is fear of screen clutter, anything else seems to be a pure assumption on how mounts would work.

As for my own demands from the devs: I just want permanent content that has nothing to do with Scarlet and/or Sylvari. We can return to Sylvari later, heck, we can even revisit scarlet in two or three years, but after more than a solid year of Scarlet, and sylvari specialness in general, I’m kind of tired.

Let’s get back to issues like The Flame Legion, The Sons of Svanir, Inquest (I’d love a living story arc dealing with Inquest trying to do legit business, like operate a casino and Zojja being an overtly paranoid nut), and so forth. Better still, why not revisit old plothooks and mysteries like The Scepter of Orr, what happened to MOX, the Wizard Tower/floating castle, and Glint’s children.

Its alread bad enough with all the people that recently call instant NPCs on top of

Ignoring the facts mounts will never ever happen because it is in fact impossible (see previous post by me), this little “issue” of people always staying on their impossible mounts would be fairly easily solved by not allowing said impossible mounts in citys (or towns, or generic trading areas).

I mean its not like you’re driving your Ford pickup truck inside a crowded mall to when you’re shopping? Or take an 18 wheeler into a bank cause you want to deposit some cash without having to get out. Just like you park your car in a parking lot/garage, you leave the mountable poop machines outside.

chuckle

The kites are cute, but I’ll pop one of my many speed boosters over this any day of the week. I mean really….far too much hassle involved.

Technically speaking, is this a mount? Based on the definitions set forth, yes it is.

My biggest concern with mounts, is that “traditional” mounts would not fit into the lore of the game as it has been set forth. I’ve said it before, but I’ll clarify my point in that it pertains to ‘traditional’ type mounts (like horses). Both players and NPCs have almost always used their own feet as far as lore goes. I say almost, because there are 2 exceptions in GW1 – Necrid Horsemen and Charr Siege Devourers. (I can’t think of any other instances, but if I missed them, feel free to let me know) Here in GW2 the only person we see really ‘riding’ anything is Taimi with Scruffy, and that’s only due to her degenerative disease. Based on that, I still feel that mounts, in the traditional fashion, just would not fit in this setting.

Now, something like the kite does sort of fit; however, as others have pointed out, this could easily become a slippery slope type issue. I would much prefer that not to happen. It depends on when/where/how the devs draw the line. If they don’t draw the line somewhere, some players are going to start demanding some outrageous (although interesting) things.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

No, I just made a thread about it because this is technically what mounts are, an object that changes the appeareance of your character and increases speed. Yes, even if your character is only holding something, even a stick, it’s something that changes the appearance.

I’m not really for mounts though, I don’t think they are needed in this game.

I don’t care one way or another. I realize it’s totally optional, and even after having 25% speed boost with swiftness, I found myself wishing I could just have a mount to make the slough that is travel/leveling go by a little faster.

An item that a character holds that gives a speed boost is not a mount IMO. It’s just an item with a speed boost. Mounts are something a character rides, sits on.

That is the common conception, but mechanically these kites work just like a mount. They are an item you activate which gives a speed buff and cosmetically alters the state of your avatar.

Don’t they only work in Drytop? Also I’ve yet to see one ingame.

Also no. No freaking mounts. At least once a month the forum go’s through this.

Guild Wars 2 is trying to be its own thing. It’s trying to brake the mould of the traditional MMO. Not having mounts is another step in this direction, just like it having a dedicated healing class.
