This isnt a progression, that isnt how gear threadmills work. The term threadmill is infact very accurate. You have to keep running, if you stop you’ll fall of the back end. And even tough you are running, you arent actually moving forward.

Or do some of you believe these better stats mean you are stronger? You’ll see bigger numbers, maybe. But that doesnt mean you are stronger. If you have to grind for gear that gives you 10% more damage, but everything else in the world has 20% more health. Did you really become stronger? Or are you just trying to close a gap that wasnt there before?

So progression is just very subjective. Its like standing in line with everyone else, and everyone takes a step forward. You only “progressed” relative to the people that didnt take a step forward. And those that didnt take a step forward, will experience the situation as having regressed. (gotten worst)

Gear threadmills are not progression, they are the illusion of progression. An illusion to hide the fact you are jumping hurdles for no other purpose then to spend time jumping hurdles.

This says nothing about gear progression. It just refers to a new type of “ITEM”. That is no indication that there will be forced gear progression implemented.

I see this scaring away a number of the more avid of wvw players. I’m also upset that I purchased gems to pay for my exotic cleric sets. I thought that I was polishing off my characters. I peacefully dealt with the changes to my guardian which drove me to change weapon sets, but those changes were at least for the sake of balance. Please, give the diehard pvers collectables, not more powerful gear.

The elitism of your ascend gear is not good enough you have rank 3 you need rank 4 to join our pug.

Anet is going to segregate the comunity in the haves and have nots with this move. The same problem existed in GW1 if you didn’t have high enough PvP rank you would have difficulty getting into groups.

Any content that isn’t accessible to all due to not having proper gear is bad.

And how would people know that you are not wearing Ascended gear? With transmutation stones and people can’t inspect you, they wouldn’t.

Nice job jumping to conclusions though! Try harder!

Feel free to keep your head firmly stuck in the sand. People will know fast enough when you drop like a fly.

Even if it is gear specific to one dungeon, youre going to see “LFM must have full ascended, pst”. I go bye bye.

In gw1 “infused armor” was specifically to address fighting mursaat. The same could be true here, where getting your armor infused (making it ascended) only specifically helps you against a certain type of enemy or in a certain location (i.e. the new dungeon).

Ever since I read this in the morning, I havent logged in. I just found it difficult to log in knowing that any gear I obtain on my main might be replaced in a few days.

Going to log in now, on my alts I’d imagine, but I haven’t had the urge to log in and obtain some dungeon gear today just because of this.

You play an MMO. MMO’s are about progression and additions. Stuff will change. If you haven’t figured this out by now, then I don’t think MMO’s are the type of game for you.

Not this MMO. Not verticle progression. If I wanted a gear treadmill I’ll do it via raiding. Not by simple fact of purchasing gear.

With that logic, why have gear at all?

This game is too big to not have something to do at level 80. Reward your level 80’s eventually. Playing barbie will only go so far.

Reward with what? Bigger numbers? Or making the game slightly easier to play?

Proponents of stat progression sure love throwing out the word “rewards” without explaining their meaning. If the reward is the ability to access certain content because you have gear that’s better than what others have, that means precisely the kind of elitism and gear grind that would put a lot of players off GW2, because that’s not the game they bought.

What elitism, though?

The gear in this game is way to easy to get to brag about. The new stuff? I will bet it’s the same thing!

All this is is to give us level 80’s something to do other than playing dress up. You people who like to play dress up? You’ll benefit, as you will run the dungeon anyway to get the skins/set you want.

If this required mass amounts of time to get the gear/level 80…I would get your argument. But…it doesn’t hold water in this game at all. Maybe for a legendary, but they don’t have stat boosts. Sooo, you can die looking pretty in WvW is about what that amounts to.

Grinding for skins/sets = not a grind is what I’m getting in this thread. 100’s of dungeon runs.

Doing just enough to get your upgrades is a grind, even though you are doing to get the skins/set…is a grind.

This doesn’t make sense to me at all.

People are going to be elitist pricks regardless. Mad King dungeon full of teams saying they would only take real level 80’s.

I’ve come to realize this also and was hoping that they after a few months of playing GW2 would be frustrated with not being able to inspect, grief or have any control over other players, that those types would flock back to mmo’s they played before. It’s still amazes me how those types can’t fathom that people can just game for the fun of it.

Directly from the blog post:

New Ascended Gear & Infusions
Introducing Ascended items, artifacts of great power that can be improved by a special new type of upgrade called Infusions, which can be found in dungeons. Look for more information about Ascended gear soon!

Ascended ITEMS with Infusion slots. These are whole new gear pieces people, NOT a new tier of armor. kitten the new dungeon deals with “fractals” that get harder the more you go in. Anyone think that maybe, just maybe, these new “ascended Items” are just gear pieces made for this particular dungeon (and likely for similar future dungeons), where you might have to upgrade your “infusions” based on certain fractals?

That actually sounds pretty cool. It’s basically a form of progression that isn’t necessary, but gives a reason to keep re-doing this dungeon.

Want to complete the dungeon once?
Cool, you can. You don’t need Ascended gear or Infusions to do it. You finished, have fun.

Want to run it multiple times and challenge yourself with higher difficulty each time?
Cool, go for it. Make sure you have your Ascended item and the proper Infusion.

This literally helps both sides of this coin. If you like to grind and like to max stats, you can grind the fractals till they become so difficult you start to bleed from the ears, and you can min-max on the infusions to your hearts content. If you just like to experience content once or twice you can run this dungeon a few times do that and you’ll have no issues with it.

I’m quoting this post again on account of its excellent analysis. He could be wrong, but Souldonkey wins the award for the best interpretation of what could be.

I’ll be interested to see the blog post.

Thank you, and I also hope it’s something similar to my theory. Arenanet has ALWAYS been a company that sticks to it’s guns. If they design a game based around an ideal, in this case “no gear treadmills”, they have a history of not going back on decisions like that. I have no reason to think differently now.

Honestly the theory that I gave is perfectly in line with their past thinking. Infused armor in Prophecies, Closer to the Stars in Factions, The lightbringer skills in Nightfall designed specifically to hurt the Margonites. This all fits in with what they’ve done in the past…

Also, I don’t know why everyone thinks it’s a competition. If you truly valued the beauty of the “no gear grind.” You’d still play, get the armor that looks most awesome and there, you are awesome. If you have spare time, play the dungeon for fun if you get an ascended sure..why not transmute it. But even if you don’t, who cares, you can still play the game as effectively as anyone else. There is no huge difference. And you shouldn’t be so insecure about what anyone has. For goodness sakes, I look at the people around me in Lion’s Arch and can’t tell what type of gear anyone is wearing, they just look cool. And when I party with people, we just play to play.

I wonder if most people who are scared of this change just have had bad experiences with competition in gears in other games or get kicked a lot for not having the “highest tier” gear. I understand if that’s your background story, but it’s not going to be the case with a “slight” increase. I have no idea why competition even exists in PvE. How much do people actually show off in this game? I have barely encountered anyone going around showing off their “crafted” Mjolnir or Legendary, it’s not gonna be the same with ascended. This update just helps, it doesn’t hurt anything.

Edit: Except maybe your sensitive sides. But loosen up, and try it before you make your final decision.

I think more imaginative content as well as more imaginative armor and weaponry should make its way into the game. It would keep playing interesting and ease the claustrophobia I feel when I consider the fact that, past a certain level, everyone’s weapons of a certain type do the same damage.

It just sounds to me as though people who [did grind] for their Legendaries (there, I capitalized it for you) don’t want to have to get back on the hustle but also don’t want to see others who might be all right with it surpass them.

If grinding is repetitive play toward a goal I consider this game a grind. Period. But the mastery inherent in the way it’s implemented in GW2 is in the player’s freedom to choose which shape that grind will take. This is awesome. Limiting everyone’s play style for the sake of placating people with Legendaries who’re comfortable with having attained the “top top tier gear” would be a reason to stop playing.

Especially when you consider how many of them bought what they needed for the gear and, in fact, did NOT grind.

Everyone should be free to play in their style.

ANet, before introducing a gear treadmill, just ask yourself those two questions …

- Are you really sure that change will allow you to keep / win back the WoW/similar game audience, while these games have already perfected this model and already have a loyal audience ?

- Is this really worth losing a good part of the audience you were originally targeting with your manifesto (plus, obviously, GW1) ?

Please, please, don’t

No it doesn’t. “More power” is the vaguest statement of all time. More “what” power? More attack power, healing power, condition power, defense against karka power, attack against karka power, ability to do harder fractals power, etc.? That post does nothing but speculate at best and raise grounds for hyperbolic discussions such as this one at worst. I still have yet to see anything saying the words “gear treadmill” or “gear progression” in anything that has been confirmed, so all of the arguments of “I’m uninstalling because there’s a gear grind now” are ridiculous at this point.

And that’s where a new game play mechanic is introduced. This infusion thing is being put into the game. Maybe it was in the works all along, but still needed testing. Who knows. But Anet felt this needed a new tier, something to make it feel more “powerful”, I guess.

Simply just adding infusion nodes to exotics wouldn’t have the same effect.

Thats as pure speculation as any of the other wild suppositions made in this thread.

But at least it sounds reasonable.

Add in something new, why not add a new tier to make it more powerful feeling/earn it.

Adding them to exotics would have been very, meh.

I think we should all just chill a bit until we know more. From the notes it sounds like the infused bonuses com from dungeons, so all this might just be an effort in giving you all the dungeon rewards you have been asking for.

Not worried one bit… HEAR THAT ANET? Keep your lousy +6 bonus sword of whocares… I did most Explorables in the game with Rares when everyone else was crying that Exo’s were “Required”. ….and I’ll only repeat the dungeon if it’s challenging like Arah and has less BUGS than Arah. Stats don’t impress me. Customization & Art does.

How does this effect WvW? If my opponent has Ascended Uber Armour, the skill of the player goes out the window and it becomes the best geared who will win.

So everyone’s fairly cool with legendary weapons being in the game, but introduce something similar for armor and yall poop yer pants?

How does that make any sense?

The whole idea sounds pretty cool to me. I just hope that new armor is smexy.

The obstacle is the path.

So I know that we are still waiting for the official details regarding this new items / gear.

However, maybe just maybe this ascension (as long as it is not for a specific fight) can be added to your existing gear.

So you can get the gear already ascended or you can ascend your current gear.

Gear upgrade if you will.

Don’t know if this is the case but something to think about.

Not true.

A guy in full exotics/ascended armor can just flat out suck.

Skill still owns gear, if your gear is reasonable (don’t go into wvw at level 80 wearing whites).

Legendary weapons have no advantage whatsoever over existing weapons – it’s purely cosmetic.

As long as ascended gear is just the same gear only “infused” like gw1 then I’m cool with the idea. It worked great in gw1 I don’t see why it wouldn’t work here.

  • Although I would prefer not to have to get completely new gear and rather just infuse the gear I have.

My initial reactions to this are less than enthusiastic… Far less, but we don’t know everything there is to know about this yet. I’m not sure why they were so vague with such an announcement that could have a very large impact on the game. If this is a full new tier (ascended weapons, ascended accessories, ascended armor, etc), then the implications down the line aren’t too promising either. Am I going to have to buy more fine transmutation stones every time you create a new rarity tier? I also, eventually, wanted to have all the different classes in full exotics at 80. Am I only to be concerned with one character now? I’m not excited about the possibility of having to choose only one character to have the maximum optimization of stats possible. If this new tier is above exotics and is more powerful, which the initial release of information claims, then I’ll barely have time to get my main character in check if the items are more difficult to get than exotics (which I’d obviously assume they would be).

TL;DR
I’m not super happy about this. The core philosophies that made me interested in Guild Wars 2 seem to be changing depending on who can scream the loudest. It appears on a whim that a new and better tier has just manifested itself over night. It is regrettable, but if this game is going to transform into World of Warcraft, and company, then I would rather take my leave now and save myself the time/trouble/money.

Reasonable doesn’t really mean anything when its just your opinion. Until there are actually facts involved your reasonable is merely another persons inconceivable. FWIW I much prefer souldonkeys thinking on what this content might be.

It would be okay if they added that infusion thing into ALL dungeon/exotic armor. The problem starts when these new armors are “slightly” better than others. It should stay as it is now, all about skins. People which already spent huge amount of time getting exotics from dungeons can feel that they wasted their time.

I for one am happy to hear about this.

I am coming back to the game to check it out to see just exactly what this entails.

And to all those threatening to leave:

No you won’t. This isn’t a deal breaker. Not for you.

If you don’t consider going from basic to fine, fine to masterwork, masterwork to rare, rare to exotic a gear grind…then going from exotic to ascended shouldn’t be a gear grind either.
