So I know that we are still waiting for the official details regarding this new items / gear.

However, maybe just maybe this ascension (as long as it is not for a specific fight) can be added to your existing gear.

So you can get the gear already ascended or you can ascend your current gear.

Gear upgrade if you will.

Don’t know if this is the case but something to think about.

Jag

Very good point!

But the knee jerk reaction people won’t like it anyways! :P

So everyone’s fairly cool with legendary weapons being in the game, but introduce something similar for armor and yall poop yer pants?

Because i can get a similar stats Pearl Weapon and be contented that the Legendary wielders dont have a stat advantage.

If you don’t consider going from basic to fine, fine to masterwork, masterwork to rare, rare to exotic a gear grind…then going from exotic to ascended shouldn’t be a gear grind either.

Hey now! I thought exotic was a small gear grind!

Farming Orr isn’t any fun and it sure in kitten felt like a grind to get those mats!

The whole idea sounds pretty cool to me. I just hope that new armor is smexy.

People are alright with Legendary weapons because Legendary weapons are exactly as powerful as Exotic weapons. That Pearl Broadsword you can craft and use as soon as you hit level 80 at a cost of maybe 1.5-2.5 gold is exactly as powerful as the Twilight that you might get after several hundred hours of grinding.

So from the description of Ascended items, they’re not similar at all to Legendary weapons.

I can do the existing progression via crafting, exploration, trading, karma purchases, gold purchases or dungeons (possible some form of PvP / WvW too).

Being forced to do the new dungeon repeatedly is not even remotely the same thing.

Did you read the post that they will be coming out with a blog post about it today.
And no it’s not the “ONLY” thing you can do, you can be patient and wait and see what is going to happen. THEN make your decision.

Jumping the gun on something we all know very little about is silly.

Blogpost is out and has close to zero information. Thanks for nothing, Anet. Still, buffed.de points to an interview with an official who said they introduced teirs so players have someting to work for (I’m paraphrasing). You can keep your head firmly in the sand. I’m just sad they killed the single most appealing aspect of the game. I’ll still play until another game tries to truly ditch teired gear and then hope they will stick to it. But I’m not investing another Euro in this one.

Sigh. It was a fun half year while it lasted.

Stop having your knee jerk reactions to something that could be nothing.

And like poster Lord said… (Not THE Lord!) :P

In gw1 “infused armor” was specifically to address fighting mursaat. The same could be true here, where getting your armor infused (making it ascended) only specifically helps you against a certain type of enemy or in a certain location (i.e. the new dungeon).
//food for thought before you people all lose your minds

Stop telling people to stop reacting. after playing a few MMO’s in my day it has been my experience if players don’t stop a bad mechanic from entering the game it takes ages to get it out after its implemented. It is much better to over react and let the devs know what you think of the idea before they implement a potentially bad one. Worst case you are wrong about the feature and it works best case you stop a crappy idea from ruining the game.

Legendaries aren’t better, they have the same stats as Exotics, they just have cool skins. That is exactly the kind of “progression” most of us want. We want to be able to get a set of Exotics and know that statistically we have the best the game has to offer, no more grind needed. And for those that do want to grind, they can grind cosmetic stuff and we don’t need to worry that we’re stuck behind the curve if we don’t.

This “ascended” gear has me very worried. If it has any power increase at all, no matter how small, that will be a gigantic deal. This game is built around the idea that there is no power creep/gear grind at all. Most of us came here on that very promise. Between the poor handling of events and now this possible new set of gear, I’m not too happy. Please just make it some cosmetic set. I hope it’s not what it sounds like.

If ascended armor is truly better than exotics, then i’m done with this game. Just two weeks ago got 100% map completion and finished story, and 2 weeks before that got full exotic set after grinding the same boring dungeon over and over. I thought I could finally relax and wvwvw with the best gear. Guess not. Bye guys! Fun 3 months!

Those things are a grind. I don’t like them, and would be much happier if Exotic weapons were the only tier, statistically, and the only thing separating a vendor item you buy for 1s from a Legendary that costs you a thousand gold is the appearance.

I could tolerate it, even if I didn’t like it, because the implicit understanding was that Exotics were, and always would be, the absolute best items in the game mechanically. If there’s going to be more vertical progression beyond that, then I’m just not interested in the game.

My opinion: New armor skin that is already infused + new items that let you infuse any armor.

The only question now is: What does infusion do, and does it give you a flat stat upgrade that makes you more powerful outside of TLS/SotM?

Best moment in GW2 was getting my last exotic. Knowing that I could do whatever I wanted to do and be optimally prepared. Knowing I could join whatever I wanted and not be slowing anyone down for lack of equipment.

Total freedom.

Today, the feeling was the opposite. A total let-down. I now know that starting friday, I’m in a race with other players to get infused unless I want to be left behind when the new content is being tackled. Exactly what I hated most about all MMOs I’ve played so far (didn’t play GW1).

I’d still be upset. I don’t want grind. Period. That’s it. Why can’t I just jump into a dungeon and beat the content with a few friends? Why force me to grind a new set of gear to explore the new content? That is exactly what we don’t want in this game. It doesn’t matter if it only affects one specific dungeon and not any of the other PvE or PvP content. We want to be able to experience all that GW2 has to offer without having to grind new gear for it.

I don’t really give 2 hoots about what it may or may not be, I’m just aware of this is the second time they have gone back on their word on this game.

1st time….Paid advantages…this was side-stepped by calling them “conveniences”. The level of advantage is/was irrelevant. It’s the fact that they said there wouldn’t be any, but in time they were added.

2nd time….This…again I could care less about how much of a difference there is/maybe…it’s all about them saying that there wouldn’t be this kind of thing and now it turns out there will be.

What will be the 3rd…4th….5th…etc things that they go back on? Voicing concerns about this kind of thing is good. Remaining silent is nothing more that giving license to continue more of the same pattern, which may lead to who knows where.

Soon enough you will only be invited to a group if you already have the gear. Pretty much how gear score works in WoW. It will be used to judge whether someone is “good enough” to join.

They lost WAY too many people after launch and they know that to stay profitable and achieve the level of success they need, the game has to appeal to the majority of the MMO crowd that wants raiding and a gear treadmill.

How does this effect WvW? If my opponent has Ascended Uber Armour, the skill of the player goes out the window and it becomes the best geared who will win.

Not true.

A guy in full exotics/ascended armor can just flat out suck.

Skill still owns gear, if your gear is reasonable (don’t go into wvw at level 80 wearing whites).

Yeah I think people are over speculating the stat-increase…. assuming of course there even is one or that it will somehow translated into any part of the game other than that dungeon. Personally, i think it’s just a mis-interpretation and likely is more inscriptions with the treadmill being related to improving the equipment to tackle the dungeon… but hopefully this blog post will clear matters up.

I know that I will be completely board with this game after two level 80’s (already there)

I decked out one…I really don’t want to do it again. This new patch just made me want to gear up my new main. But after that? 5 years with the same gear (same everything basically..but we change armor….y..ay)? Talk about bad idea for a game with a huge PVE focus.

Can’t there be a middle ground? I need something to do, kitten

I prefer this game over the others, but staying the same power/progression forever in an MMO is just not very attracting. They dropped the ball, so far, on pvp and wvw. PvE isn’t doing so hot either. But we want this game to be just like GW.

Like I said…It worked for GW. Different game. It wont fly with this game.

If it gives a stat that says reduces 3% damage coming from (specific type of mob that deals so much damage and is only found in a very limited area which drops loot/token that to buy said armor) then it’s ok.

Ok scratch that, it’s not ok. Even if it’s against specific mobs, I hate to have to carry around another armor set just in case someone/someguildty calls out a lf1m for that party/place/thing/whatever.

Whether skill or gear matter more is irrelevent. Most of us want to have the best gear a game has to offer, but we do NOT want grind. We want to get our exotics and be finished. We want to be FREE to play whatever part of the game we enjoy. Adding in a new tier of gear, regardless of how small the stat increase is – it’s still an increase and goes against everything we were promised.

Reality is the majority of MMO players want a gear treadmill.

So explain to us why all WoW clones have failed, with the latest being The Old Republic. It’s easy to say “the majority of MMO players want feature X, which is just like WoW”, ignoring how WoW clones are dying all around.

Soon enough you will only be invited to a group if you already have the gear. Pretty much how gear score works in WoW. It will be used to judge whether someone is “good enough” to join.

It was required in GW1, only way to progress against the Mursaat was to be ascended and infused. Ascended Items will likely be pretty easy to get, and infused items will be found in any dungeon. They will come in a small variety of backpieces likely.

Sad to say but I’m with everyone else in that I would likely leave the game for good if they start releasing better stat gear.

I like the idea of being able to hit max stat, take a break for a while, and then come back and not have to replace all of my gear because now I’m geared like a loser. I quit WoW because of that nonsense. Nothing like spending months to get a set of armor only to be considered POS three months later. What the heck is the point!

Sounds like this new ascended set is yet another “tier” of armor. Boo I say. Boo!

Of course I will wait to see what it ACTUALLY is before making hasty decisions.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….

Reality is the majority of MMO players want a gear treadmill.

So explain to us why all WoW clones have failed, with the latest being The Old Republic. It’s easy to say “the majority of MMO players want feature X, which is just like WoW”, ignoring how WoW clones are dying all around.

Rift is doing just fine….

They are likely hats and back pieces only, not full sets of armour.

I for one am happy to hear about this.

I am coming back to the game to check it out to see just exactly what this entails.

And to all those threatening to leave:

No you won’t. This isn’t a deal breaker. Not for you.

Correction: It is a dealbreaker.

There are a few core nichés this game has:
Dynamic leveling system
Downleveling
No subscription
Combat/Trait system
No gear treadmill.

Take even one of those core nichés away from me, and Im gone. Its like all of the sudden charging a sub, or removing Downleveling, or installing quest hubs with a dozen quests. Its core, and if it is screwed with enough, it is definately a deal breaker.

Karma is as abundant as air, and as useless as the Kardashians.

Yeah no offense to players that bought stuff… but in an ever evolving game that might have an expansion, did you really think the items you had would be the best forever? That’s like buying an Audi or whatever and thinking they’re never coming out with a better model.

The max-stat weapons that I found in Guild Wars 1 on April 25, 2005, during the early-access headstart event, before the game even technically officially launched, are still equipped on my characters on November 12, 2012, and are still exactly as powerful as the absolute best equipment that you can get in the game, after seven and a half years, and three expansions.

So yes, I thought that having Exotic weapons in Guild Wars 2 would be ‘safe’ from gear inflation, less than three months later.

Rift is doing just fine….

SWTOR certainly isn’t.

I reactivated the other day to have a quick look at how it had progressed and there is a tiny list of servers after many server merges.

Whether it’s still profitable is another story of course. Less players means smaller costs for servers, bandwidth, customer support, etc.

SoE have finally been knocked off the top spot
in the list of developers I have the least faith & trust in.
Congratulations ArenaNet!

My take/guesses?

The progression will be the infusions. different infusions for different situations. We will all have to get the ascendant armor (maybe they require an exotic to “craft” so as to not bypass that tier and your effort is not wasted) but they wont be to hard to get (maybe on par with current exotics).

Then the infusion grind is available for the tread millers maybe something like “ice infusion” to reduce incoming damage from ice based damage, etc not unlike drinking a potion of Svanir slaying (which are dirt cheap) except this time the protection is “in you gear” which makes it “more powerful” but only in specific situations.

Cancer is also a Zodiac sign.

Ascended likely just produces a PVE bonus against a particular enemy.. in this case the Karka…. the enemy the entire update is based around.

I watched a lot of their videos. They promised that there would be no grind. I knew they couldn’t do it.

Why?

MMO’s, by nature, are a grind. You cannot avoid it. You want to craft? It’s a grind. YOu want that new skin? That’s a grind. You want badges? That’s a grind. sPVP is even a grind.

It’s all a grind. It’s only how you want to see the grind. Right now, you don’t want to see a dungeon that has armor upgrades attached to it. That would be MORE grind, not adding to a grindless game.

All Anet can do is try to minimize it, which they did a good job with. Getting rid of the grind? Not happening. The only way that happens is if we all logged on, at launch, being level 80. All crafts maxed out. All gear was free. You already have the best gear in the game. All PoI’s/Vista’s/maps are unlocked….you get the point.

That, is a grindless game. And would probably be a boring one at that, at least for me.

SWTOR failed for many reasons other than being a WoWclone. Mainly, it was rushed through by EA…. So it had barely any content at launch (esp. @ lvl 50), was lacking tons of features folks would consider “standard in MMOs”, and not a great combat system. Though, the story was incredible and the classes were well designed (though some might argue that).

Sorry for being off topic… but I figured with all the accusations and wild statements going about, I’d at least defend something I know quite well. You can hardly blame pure gear progression as the route cause for many MMO failures.

They promised no grind would be required. Optional grinds are optional, if you don’t want to do it you will be at no disadvantage.
