It already exist different tiers of armour at release. Masterwork, Rare, Exotic etc. Ascended is a new type of gear that is slightly better than Exotic, Ascended gear comes from GW1 and was an endgame armour. You don’t need to get it, it’s optional. It’s not like they will release 20-30 tiers of armour like they have done in WoW.

I knew it was time before they release new armors “better” than exotics. I mean, people where getting exotics on the first day of release. It was too easy. I have a feeling GW2 will eventually turn up how WoW has become… Which I really don’t want

Wow Vanilla “WOW OMG 5K CRIT!” – MoP: 40k crit no problem. I hope they don’t go overboard with the gear.

I like this completel however. It makes “best gear” still anti-grind, but for those who want to go that extra mile. That extra grind. That extra dungeon. That extra 5 hours of sweating on their keyboard, this is perfect for them.

Does everyone think that Anet will cater for “casual” and ONLY casual? If they do this, they’ll lose out on a lot of the “hardcore” Gw2 players eventually. They have to tailor the game to suit both Casual AND Hardcore (and “midi’s”).

Knowing content like this will be coming out not just on the 15th, but also further on in the game is what I want and needed to keep me playing, and I bet this is what majority of other people wanted.

On a side note, I’ve noticed that people only go on forums to complain and cry about something anyway. I hope these “bashers” of these new dungeons realise that people who’re happy are like “oh cool” and are busy trying to find out as much as possible right now, rather than be on the forums and complain.

Just because YOU don’t like something doesn’t mean it shouldn’t exist. What about all the players who DO want it? Don’t you think they should have something they want also?

Maybe YOU shouldn’t play MMO’s?

Grinding is assuming you are no better than a horse chasing a carrot dangling from a stick in front of its face. Doing content you do not enjoy and in which you do not have fun just because it gives a shiny reward in the end is the same as lowering yourself to the level of a mindless animal.

I don’t know why so many players, who love traditional MMOs, fall for it. GW2 was being different in that it was dealing with their players as human beings. It appears players don’t want to be treated as human beings and instead see themselves more as mindless animals, but I’m still surprised that ArenaNet changed its mind so soon.

Grinding is bad. It’s bad design, and the fact it sells – or used to sell, considering how almost all recent MMOs have failed – doesn’t change how it’s bad design.

heh I had to LOL on this one!

So what are the point of Dungeons then? I take it you don’t like to run dungeons?
Thats all they are is a grind! A grind to get the gear you want. All of you complaining and who run dungeons are already doing the gear grind but you don’t even want to admit it. Just in this case you are grinding for looks and not stats.

If you don’t like dungeons then what do you do? Level alts? (Grinding levels?)
You like to craft? (Gotta grind for mats).

Next time you call people mindless animals maybe you should take a look in the mirror.

It comes down to the incentive to grind. As it is now, people grind dungeons for different cosmetic looks. They could just as easily get the same quality gear through various other avenues. They grind dungeons because they WANT to, not because they are FORCED to like other MMO’s.

If you want to get any of the “good” looking end level gear then you will have to grind for it. Which in turn FORCES you to Grind because you want that item.

Guild Wars 2 is still a grind just like every MMO on the market. All they did differently is how you do the grind (DE’s/Renowns/ect). They just put a new spin on it and changed it up a little. But it’s still a grind. You are complaining about there being a new grind but everytime you log into GW2 you grind even if you don’t want to admit it.
You don’t like something and it’s DOOM DOOM DOOM……

If it smells like poo, tastes like chicken but still comes from an animals butt… it’s still poo!

In Gw1 there was farming. There was speedclearing. But there was no grinding. You were not obliged to go somewhere to get something you want. Here, you are.
Doasc. Voltaic spear farm. Fowsc/uwsc. None of those were even reminding anyone of grinding. Here, grinding starts when you enter dungeon for the first time. And no matter what you need, what you do, if you are in a dungeon you will be grinding through it.
And ascended gear? Infusion? 3 months into game? Sorry, I might be wrong, but it sounds like “get it or get out”.

You people are really stupid. Even if ascended gear has better stats, it’s something to work toward. You cry about not having anything to do at 80, and then that legendaries aren’t worth it because you only get slightly better stats – and now you’re crying over this? Most people don’t even buy level 80 weapons, and use 78 because the stats trade off vs value isn’t significant.

If you really want nothing to do, then go play a single player game. MMO is meant to evolve and introduce new things… even if they are new items with better stats, there’s got to be a reason for it. Have any of you morons considered that ANet is typically applying and changing things in RESPONSE to the community – as in you kitten asked for it, and that’s why it’s coming. They are changing acquisition of legendaries because people had a difficult time with it. They adjusted and nerfed professions as required. Do you idiots seriously think they’re just going to go and “ruin” everything they’ve spent so much time on setting up?

It shouldn’t hurt to use your head. And until anything official with official stats on these items are released, you idiots shouldn’t jump the gun. It’s kittens like you all that ruin games in the long run.

This has nothing to do with WOW or any other MMO. If you can’t progress, you’ll just go and do something else – lots of people stopped playing after hitting 80 – and even more complained how easy it was to get max everything. So stop being hypocritical and show some support – they’ve been listening to us so far, they’re not gonna drop something that’ll annihilate all the work they’ve put in.

There are plenty of things to do.

Getting a stat advantage is not one of them.

You’re not complaining about a lack of end-game content, you’re comaplaining about not being given an advantage over others by having higher stats. As it stands right now you can do whatever content you ENJOY. After this change you will need to farm this dungeon to be able to compete.

Currently you can get exotics via loot, karma or gold. You can play how you want to. Once this goes in you will have one option – farm the new dungeon repeatedly.

SoE have finally been knocked off the top spot
in the list of developers I have the least faith & trust in.
Congratulations ArenaNet!

Ever since I read this in the morning, I havent logged in. I just found it difficult to log in knowing that any gear I obtain on my main might be replaced in a few days.

Going to log in now, on my alts I’d imagine, but I haven’t had the urge to log in and obtain some dungeon gear today just because of this.

You play an MMO. MMO’s are about progression and additions. Stuff will change. If you haven’t figured this out by now, then I don’t think MMO’s are the type of game for you.

If i buy apples from arenanet because i need apples and not bananas and arenanet says “yeah i will always sell apples” and then after 3 months he begin to sell bananas it means there is something wrong with it, i bought this game for a reason, and all the peoples that are playing this game ( all server full/high ) are playing it for the same reason, no grind, no nerd farmers that oneshot you just cuz they have no life and farm 28/24 each day, no raids, no trinity, no montly fee, can you understand this or should i make you some drawing? if out there there are other 30 MMO with gear progression and they all failed why should arenanet put the same thing when the playerbase WON’T it except some noob that can’t kill a critter in pvp without equip? think about it mr casper

I have never complained about lack of progression at 80 and GW1 managed to change and evolve just fine with 20 levels and gear stats that didn’t improve once in 7 years. You are assuming a lot, and being insulting while doing it as well.

You guys who support or want stat increases in GW….um….
Go back to Wow..or basically any other MMO out there.
What are you doing trying to bring that nonsense to GW?

A game where everyone can take part in all things without having to spend hours grinding for gear. Competition is cosmetic.

So are you saying to get that to get Cultural Armor Tier 3, there is no grind involved? I don’t know about you but to get 30 gold some ONE peice isn’t easy for some folks. For them to get that much gold they would have to grind Orr/Dungeons/Crafting or AH right?

Or maybe you want to get a Legendary? We all know how much GRINDING that takes! An absurd amount!! Which is fine, because its a Legendary.

You’re grinding and you don’t even want to admit it!

Sorry but some of us are tired of playing dress-up and would like something new to “grind” for.

People competed just fine in WvW when they were level 75 with blues…never complained one bit.

Now gear is a problem.

It’s a team game out there. It’s not team Ascended VS team Exotic. Do what you have to do, at your own pace. Have fun…, perhaps? People need to realize these game evolve over time. New items. New dungeons. Balance changes. Game play changes.

And people need to understand that this is not GW1. Like that game? Play that game. It’s still up and running I believe.

There will probably be more changes in the coming months. Brace yourselves. I kind of feel bad for the devs.

Happy to grind for optional things i.e. titles, skins, achievements.

Not Happy to grind to keep up with power creep.

We really need an official statement on this as I for one will be requesting a refund for the game and gems purchased if they introduce a gear treadmill.

The product was sold with a manifesto and many direct interviews that claimed they would not put in a power creep grind, that the end game had a Plato for stats.

I’m on the fence until an official announcement, however this has created a very unpleasing stench of WoW v2.0

You play an MMO. MMO’s are about progression and additions. Stuff will change. If you haven’t figured this out by now, then I don’t think MMO’s are the type of game for you.

Not this MMO. Not verticle progression. If I wanted a gear treadmill I’ll do it via raiding. Not by simple fact of purchasing gear.

With that logic, why have gear at all?

This game is too big to not have something to do at level 80. Reward your level 80’s eventually. Playing barbie will only go so far.

Reward with what? Bigger numbers? Or making the game slightly easier to play?

Proponents of stat progression sure love throwing out the word “rewards” without explaining their meaning. If the reward is the ability to access certain content because you have gear that’s better than what others have, that means precisely the kind of elitism and gear grind that would put a lot of players off GW2, because that’s not the game they bought.

What elitism, though?

The gear in this game is way to easy to get to brag about. The new stuff? I will bet it’s the same thing!

All this is is to give us level 80’s something to do other than playing dress up. You people who like to play dress up? You’ll benefit, as you will run the dungeon anyway to get the skins/set you want.

If this required mass amounts of time to get the gear/level 80…I would get your argument. But…it doesn’t hold water in this game at all. Maybe for a legendary, but they don’t have stat boosts. Sooo, you can die looking pretty in WvW is about what that amounts to.

Grinding for skins/sets = not a grind is what I’m getting in this thread. 100’s of dungeon runs.

Doing just enough to get your upgrades is a grind, even though you are doing to get the skins/set…is a grind.

This doesn’t make sense to me at all.

The elitism of your ascend gear is not good enough you have rank 3 you need rank 4 to join our pug.

Anet is going to segregate the comunity in the haves and have nots with this move. The same problem existed in GW1 if you didn’t have high enough PvP rank you would have difficulty getting into groups.

Any content that isn’t accessible to all due to not having proper gear is bad.

New Ascended Gear & Infusions
Introducing Ascended items, artifacts of great power that can be improved by a special new type of upgrade called Infusions, which can be found in dungeons. Look for more information about Ascended gear soon!

Ascended ITEMS with Infusion slots. These are whole new gear pieces people, NOT a new tier of armor. kitten the new dungeon deals with “fractals” that get harder the more you go in. Anyone think that maybe, just maybe, these new “ascended Items” are just gear pieces made for this particular dungeon (and likely for similar future dungeons), where you might have to upgrade your “infusions” based on certain fractals?

That actually sounds pretty cool. It’s basically a form of progression that isn’t necessary, but gives a reason to keep re-doing this dungeon.

Want to complete the dungeon once?
Cool, you can. You don’t need Ascended gear or Infusions to do it. You finished, have fun.

Want to run it multiple times and challenge yourself with higher difficulty each time?
Cool, go for it. Make sure you have your Ascended item and the proper Infusion.

This literally helps both sides of this coin. If you like to grind and like to max stats, you can grind the fractals till they become so difficult you start to bleed from the ears, and you can min-max on the infusions to your hearts content. If you just like to experience content once or twice you can run this dungeon a few times do that and you’ll have no issues with it.

If your mind “boggles” at the idea of being fine with having to grind toward cosmetic, non-mechanical ‘sidegrades’ (that one can completely, 100% ignore without it ever affecting how they play the game) but not being fine with having to grind toward mechanical, statistical upgrades (which, if ignored, will impair one’s ability to play the game, compared to an equally-proficient player who has the upgrades), then that’s nobody’s fault but your own. It’s a very simple concept.

Legendaries don’t have better stats, period. If there are new types of armor, they should follow the same model. There’s a difference between improving or tinkering with a minor aspect of the game and violating a core principle of your game’s design. That’s why people are up in arms, and they have a right to be, just as you have the right to express your opinion (respectfully) that you believe a new gear tier is a good thing.

It is a bit soon to assume what Ascended gear is, but never too soon to reaffirm one’s opposition to any kind of a gear grind model.

I’m just gonna say it.

The whole no gear progression thing worked for GW1. It was a small game with a low level cap…very VERY pvp based.

That will not fly here. GW2 is already losing numbers; and will continue to. There is nothing to do at level 80! Playing dress up only goes so far.

A gear treadmill would be where you are constantly powering up your gear (look at traditional MMOs). If Anet employs this every 3-6 months…How in the heck is that a treadmill (upgrading your armor every 3-6 months…or what ever is NOT a treadmill..geez)? For an actual gamer, that’s still slow as kitten. All the while, you’re still stuck at level 80.

This game will continue to lose more players if there’s isn’t anything to do on the PVE side of things. Right now, the end game is playing dress up…and I’m already done with that.

New skins? What if I don’t like them? Stuck waiting for the next batch.

For an actual gamer like me. I play lots of other games. Devoting months of play time to keep up with a gear curb is a nightmare for me. It becomes a job. During gw1 there were years of time I didn’t spend playing, but I could always pick the game back up and be with the best of the best. I didn’t have to grind badge gear so I can be told I needed t10 to do a t9 raid.

This is what I don’t get.

You run your dungeons, you get the gear. You would have anyway to gasp get the new skins! Which you guys where OK with anyway.

So we are OK with a meaningless skin grinds. But if they add stats to it, which are all static btw, once and awhile…shame on them!

People are comparing this to raids and whatnot. Most likely, this will take a little long that your usual exotic, with dungeon runs. You’re done in a week. Yay! Even the most hardcore of hardcore’s weren’t even fully geared in traditional MMO’s after few months in.

The difference? One is super casual. The other is a time investment/treadmill…feels like you’re going nowhere. Hence the reason the word was used. How treadmill is even used in GW2 is beyond me.

I kinda have a feeling this gear will be stupid easy to get…and everyone here will look like dummies for making a big deal over nothing. 6 months from now? Another upgrade? Good! I’m sick of feeling like I’m going nowhere in these games (meaning having nothing to do but twiddle my thumbs/chat to my guild). Grind for a week…get that set. /cheer

I remember reading threads that if they were to have gear progression, make it easy at least. Gear is stupid easy to get in this game. This new kitten? Probably the same.

Dyn, MrLee, You’re only seeing one side of it, it’s not so much as the grind as having to grind. The player who grinds for skins does it because they want to and not because they need to. Gear progression in most mmo’s is required to complete continuing harder content, hence the vicious cycle. Most players were under the impression the greedy gear grind was not the GW2 model so it’s obvious why most are upset to see this change. I mean no different then the hardcore wowtards being peeved if gear reached it’s finite cap in wow.

People are going to be elitist pricks regardless. Mad King dungeon full of teams saying they would only take real level 80’s.

Anyone though that maybe, just maybe, these new “ascended Items” are just gear pieces made for this particular dungeon (and likely for similar future dungeons), where you might have to upgrade you “infusions” based on certain fractals?

That actually sounds pretty cool. It’s basically a form of progression that isn’t necessary, but gives a reason to keep re-doing this dungeon.

Want to complete the dungeon once?
Cool, you can. You don’t need Ascended gear or Infusions to do it. You finished, have fun.

Want to run it multiple times and challenge yourself with higher difficulty each time?
Cool, go for it. Make sure you have your Ascended item and the proper Infusion.

This literally helps both sides of this coin. If you like to grind and like to max stats, you can grind the fractals till the become so difficult you start to bleed from the ears, and you can min-max on the infusions to your hearts content. If you just like to experience content once or twice you can run this dungeon a few times do that and you’ll have no issues with it.

This is an intelligent understanding of what we know so far and I hope to God you are right.

Indeed. If it’s like this, I would actually be happy with it.

I’m sorry, but people are getting way off kilter with this. I highly doubt that this armor is more than the legendary equivalent of armor. You don’t even know WHAT the infusion does, but you’re already to howl about it. Stop being melodramatic. This isn’t WoW. The gear stats are not going to change the entire dynamic of the game. I’ve killed people in wvw wearing level 40 blues versus their level 80 exotics. Gear helps, but it doesn’t define the game.

Let’s get this down the the very heart of the problem… And that is allowing people to make gear grinding significant. Don’t join guilds that want “outfitted” people. Don’t run dungeons with people who complain about your gear. If you make the elitist behavior unacceptable, then it can’t take hold. No matter what gear situation you’re dealing with. It is only three months in, there is almost no way that this gear wasn’t planned BEFORE the game’s release. Anet wanted it in there for a reason. But if you feel the need to quit because you’re too afraid to stand up to annoying people with counterproductive gaming mentalities, then by all means. The less crying we have to see in chat, the better.

5%, that’s my guess. From what the incremental difference between gear types right now is, I’d say that the Ascended gear is 5% more effective than that of Exotic. It’s not much of a difference, some will say 5% is the matter between life and death (over exaggeration much?). But still…it wouldn’t be too bad.

Even +1 stats is still better…so my multi sets for multi tasks will just rot away? Not fun. I hope they’l give us an easy way, to transform our exo into ascended. Or it will be just a spit in the face of all ppl, who farmed this multi gear for the sake of future need.

I don’t like the sound of this, unless you can convert Exotics into Ascended or these Ascended armors are relatively easy to get.

I spent a lot of time on my dungeon armor and if you are now telling me that my armor is sub-par that makes me feel let down.
Yeah, I know. fine transmutation stones. But still.

The problem with this is that even if you make Ascended armor give +1 stat more then people feel that their current gear is garbage.
While mechanically the idea is great I believe that it’ll have a very negative effect in the long run.

You are essentially making every piece of Exotic armor be considered obsolete and the community at large will feel forced to attain these Ascended armor sets.

I went from Masterwork armor into Exotic, so I know that you don’t NEED to have the best armor possible.
Still, though… consider what the community at large will think of this.

Again, though, if this armor isn’t grindy to get then I have very little against it.

That is highly doubtful

My guardian is level 80 with level 70 weapons…blue level 80 armor, and has no problems getting groups (gonna be my new main) for HoTW.

Matter of fact, people don’t even know I have crap gear until I tell them…they are quite shocked, actually. Matter of fact, I have never been asked what my gear was. I just get a slew of compliments, and I tell them I can’t wait ‘til this char is in full exotics. After I tell them what gear I had? I’m still in the group 4 hours later.

Skill still owns gear in this game. Gear will just help that along.

This new gear isn’t going to be this huge jump like people make it sound. I’m sure it’s less of a gap than what I’m running with on my Guardian (green 70’s/blue80’s…VS exotics, although I have 2 pieces now).

Skill will always trump gear in GW2.

“With great challenges come great rewards. The patch will introduce ascended items. Ascended armors are “slightly more powerful than exotics” and can, in some cases, hold slots for infusions. Infusions will allow you to increase your character’s power. Guild Wars players are familiar with infusing armor, although I’ll be my hat that the process doesn’t involve creepy Seers this time ’round."

Article references a conversation with Colin Johnson however is not directly quoted from him.

Again, I know we need an official statement however this reeks of a power Plato removal. I really want to trust Anet, though with NSoft involvement Im nervous they may buckle to wow retention tactics.

So…

1. Doesn’t affect PvP. Check.
2. Doesn’t affect WvW given it’s zerg and tactics based. Check.
3. Makes PvE easier. Check.
4. Can still do dungeons. Check.
5. Can still do new dungeons and content without the armor. Check.
6. The negligible difference = People aren’t going to expect you to have that type of gear just like people won’t expect you to have a legendary to do anything. Check.
7. People are insecure because others are have the same chance to get the gear just like you and it doesn’t even affect you in any way. Check.

I mean we are all here to play a game right? If they do introduce a more powerful gear then I am sure they will make more than one way to get it. Dungeons or Crafting, who knows!

I see it as adding content for people who WANT the gear chase. People don’t like that, fine. Then they don’t have to do it! Just like if they don’t want to do something now, they have that choice. Because if they do introduce stronger gear in the game, IMO it isn’t going to be that much of a boost, if at all.

But we won’t know until ArenaNet puts up their blog post or whenever they feel like doing it.
