Excellent analysis and summation of the problem. Anet doesn’t seem to realize that this game is already too grindy and we really don’t need any more busy work; we need fun and meaningful content to make the game worth playing!

lol it’s not more busy work….it’s the same exact kitten dailies, it just has to be in A CERTAIN ZONE and you have to do LESS OF THEM and it’s no even for the same kitten REWARDS…it’s for AP and some special rewards for going out of your way to the certain zone

you kitteners are just trolling now

They also take less time to do too.

How about people just wait first, until the change is there and people had a chance to experience, how this change really plays out.

Its so incredible ridiculous and pathetic, how people play themself up here, as if they would be the fortunetellers per se in person, knowing everything how something will end up, before a change even has been made, without knowing anything at all,.
It brings nothing to rant over something based on a half portion of knowlege about what you are ranting, when there exists so far just only a very uninformative blog post, which tells us only the basics about the new system and nothing really very detailed.

People make panically a huge ruckus out if this here, like turning super tiny mosqitos into super huge elephants…

Seriously.. if people have no serious issues, they create themself some …

They also take less time to do too.

Time to do the dailies now: 0-10 minutes.
Time to do the dailies after update: 10-30-… minutes.

Those who are doing all the APs already (or try to) will see a huge boost with the new system and everyone else will see a boost to everything else reward-wise. The only people who will be -slightly- penalized by the new system (AP wise only, not with other rewards) are those who do only 5 daily achievements per day with the current system.

I would argue that with the current system those people who simply play for an hour after school/work have their dailies done 90% of the time, and people who do it are the majority of players. I agree that this is an assumption, but I find it plausible, so it looks like the majority of players who are simply playing the game on a daily basis are the ones who are hurt most.

I guess the best option would be to add a 4 AP reward on each of the new dailies with a max of 12 each day (3 dailies * 4 AP each = 12). So the new daily max is the same as the old one and players who do only part of the achievements get their AP.

As a semi-solution, this sounds fair. Can be as well 2-5-10, 3-6-10 or 5-8-10 actually.

As far as i understand, people who were login in just for the daylies will be doing same for log in rewards, it’s even likely that those people were the target audience of log in rewards for AN. And people who actually play the game will be getting the new daily achieves system. Afaics it’s a win/win. I will reserve my judgement for future to see how it actually implemented and how it plays out, but for now i don’t see a problem. Perhaps daily achieves actually might become part of content after that, something you can do in game, instead of essentially being a log in rewards as of now.

What it means is we have to go out of our way to do activities we may not want to do just to get the daily done, rather than earning the daily doing whatever it is you like to do. Hence, it is busywork. I already find having to log in on multiple toons to craft every day due to time-gated content a hassle. This is not how I want to play the game. I find most PVE events to be boring as hell and don’t want to waypoint around multiple zones to do them.

In then end this might make it easier for WvWers depending on the WvW changes (if it isn’t something outrageous like take an enemy keep in the borderlands), but harder for PVE-oriented players.

It’s all speculation now and this may turn out better than the op fears, but his comments and concerns are spot on and whatever it is Anet does, they should bear these concerns in mind and make the dailies better for all players, not just the AP hunters.

Exactly where are you getting those numbers? All of the avhuevement now require less work.

Ascalon Forager requires you to scavenge 4 times unlike the 20 times you currently have to do. Vista Viewer takes less that 20 seconds as there are some by a WP. Kill 3 players in WvW takes less time than killing 10. I do not see a complete list of all of the modified achievements including the new oneS.

Importantly though, if I’ve understood the announcement correctly, the daily reward is only 10 achievement points.

Laurels and mystic coins are now rewarded simply for logging in and after that each daily achievement had it’s own individual reward.

So unless you want 10AP you don’t need to complete 3 dailies. And for AP hunters it must be an improvement to only have to do 3 achievements, even in different areas, over having to do 10 every day.

Now, I get 5 or 6 AP per day from doing the daily. With this new system, I’ll get 0. Not much of an improvement, I’d say…

The coins and laurels, I don’t care about, but the daily is about the only way I can get AP these days (since the new achievements are not soloable by me).

It seems to me as if these changes are designed to provide a more varied, perhaps even more challenging, and maybe even more rewarding daily experience for those who want direction in their daily activity. The log in rewards seem to be intended to compensate those who like the current system’s play as you like and get your dailies without consciously trying approach.

We end up with a system where those who want daily rewards without being directed or restricted to specific confent can still get that and those who want incentives to pursue specific content and more challenging content get that.

Personally I do not think that the daily log in reward is intended to draw people who have stopped playing back in. Perhaps my view is an outlier on this matter but in game rewards would not be an effective way of bribing me to log into a game tha I do not enjoy or want to play. This reward really does seem to me to be a variation on what we have now, rewards for playing whatever you want.

Why is one of the rewards a Bag of Ascended Crafting Materials!? Cause we need more ways to get that stuff!!! /sarcasm

Seriously if you want to give us a “Bag of Ascended Crafting Materials” then fill it with Silk…copious amounts of silk…

I’d prefer copious amounts of linen. Linen is a pain to get. Silk is fairly easy to get if you kill stuff as a lvl 80.

But you need waaaaaaaay more silk than you need linen… (and I only get leather stuff… even on my light armoured characters).

But that bag of ascended crafting materials is rubbish. You get flooded with that every step you set in Silverwastes…

This reward really does seem to me to be a variation on what we have now, rewards for playing whatever you want.

Whatever this new change is, the daily is absolutely not rewarding you for playing whatever you want. I want to play in the Shiverpeaks. But I can’t get anything done for the daily there (let’s say that the image on the blog is the active daily for that day). Only if I go to Maguuma Wastes, Ascalon, one tiny bit (if I am actually online when he shows up) in Maguuma and some area in Orr with only annoyingly long events that often fail anyway. And those are the last things I want to do.

It means that they are not likely to go out of their way to do the daily. So they will likely not get the daily. And since it is now all or nothing, they’ll ge no AP.

They also take less time to do too.

That’s false, the new system will be way faster depending on how many APs you are going for. To get the 10 APs to reach the count of the new system you need considerably more (way way more) time than the time you’d need after the update.

Foraging 4 times in Ascalon takes less than a minute, viewing a vista even in the Maguuma Wastes takes a couple of minutes at best. Events in Malchor’s Leap will sure take more time than events in the Silverwastes, but what about everywhere else? ML has a far higher concentration of events than other zones. The Fire Elemental (and any world boss) kill shouldn’t be in the list. Anything that appears on a timer is dumb to have as an achievement but not anything else.

Those who are doing all the APs already (or try to) will see a huge boost with the new system and everyone else will see a boost to everything else reward-wise. They are hurt because they are missing a couple of APs but they get more rewards (of everything else) instead? A worthwhile trade off I think. And as I said, one day you won’t get any APs, the next you will get 10, the next 0, the next 10 etc, it’s how many APs you will get overall that counts and that would depend on the actual set-up of the new Achievements. I really think we should first see their new Achievement rotation and then decide.

Don’t know why many are getting their panties in a twist… It isn’t even out yet and the complaints come rolling in. Don’t boohoo it until it’s at least out and you’ve experienced the changes.

By the sounds of it, it looks good. No more having to do countless dailies just for my 10 achievement points. Gone will be the days I’m frantically having to find 10 players to kill in EOTM in the last few minutes before the daily reset because of being far too tired to stay up (dailies reset for me at 1pm, I get tired at 10pm, and I have things to do IRL between those hours so sometimes I miss out on some achievement points).

If you take the examples we see on the screenshot in the blogpost, I’ll get 0. Because I don’t want to do PvP, I don’t want to do WvW, I don’t want to go to Silverwastes, and my current leveling character is in Caledon Forest. And the Fire Elemental is not active when I’m online.

If I take today’s dailies: Salvage 10 items (easily done, if you play normally and collect your drops while playing), Kill Variety (again, easily done, I like to wander around while playing), Gatherer (even if you’d make it 50, I’d still very easily do it, because I love to gather), Condition Applier (lucky me, I’m on a ranger with an axe and torch), Events (will probably not get that, I don’t come across enough of those), Kills (goes nicely with the variety bit), Leveler (just leveled, doubt I"ll get it), Reviver (depends a bit on what bodies I come across).

I get to play what I want, where I want and still get my daily, without any annoyance. And wasn’t that the entire idea of playing a game in your spare time? To have fun? To not have somebody tell you what to do?

But where to draw the line?

How about where it was earlier: play for 30-40 minutes when, how, and what you want, and you will have earned your daily?

That’s false, the new system will be way faster depending on how many APs you are going for. To get the 10 APs to reach the count of the new system you need considerably more (way way more) time than the time you’d need after the update.

I’ve said it already. “On average” people log in and play what they want. Earlier, they would’ve gotten daily done automatically in 90% of cases – because it was, well, “daily”. Dedicated time to acquire daily AP was next to zero because people played and got it. Now, they would have to go and do stuff they’re not doing, which is always extra time.

won’t get any APs, the next you will get 10, the next 0, the next 10 etc, it’s how many APs you will get overall that counts and that would depend on the actual set-up of the new Achievements. I really think we should first see their new Achievement rotation and then decide.

And I’ve answered it already too. With that type of specific encounters, even 10-20% chance of hitting a daily with things I simply play is a miracle. So it’s ~45 AP per month instead of ~165, unless I go and spend extra time for those.

Full list? We can easily extrapolate it: “Do X events in zone Y”, “Gather in zone Z”, “Kill World Boss A”. It’s obvious that it won’t contain 3 options of “Daily any gatherer”, “Any killer” and “Any vista” every day… unless we players say it loud enough now so that they hear it and change it before rolling out.

I’m honestly torn a bit here. On the one hand I actually like the changes to the dailies. For as easy and “play as you’d like” way that the other dailies have been, they always felt a bit too rote, even when we had a ton to choose from.

As some have stated, this is going to be for AP and at the end of the day, just like jumping puzzles are primarily for AP and small prize at the end from the chest, I think changing it to get rewards more in line for the task you choose to do and its difficulty while getting 10 AP for doing it is a much better system. it means that AP hunters will want to do the content and if you don’t want to do it or only want to do a few of them, then you can do that too. In the end I’m fine with that change.

I’m not fine with the act of using a gift a day of various things as a means of inflating login metric numbers, nor am I a fan of potentially seeing less laurels in a month. It just seems to be a kitten thing to do to the players, but maybe it won’t be that horrible. Given Anet’s track record on these things though…well…

I just feel like Anet has painted themselves into a corner and are now just trying anything to “fix” their problem without dealing with the first problem they made. its like a coder trying to fix bad code, by writing more code around the bad code instead of just finding and fixing the bad code.

So just because something requires players to exit their comfort zone, or in terms of the old system, their farming place, it makes it bad? All I see is penalizing players who stay in SW (or any other farming zone) doing their whole daily there and not leaving for anything, they will now need to move a bit around -if they want that extra reward.

You are blowing things out of proportion here. It’s not like zone X,Y,Z take more than a split second to port to. All I see is: “Today I will level my alt in Ascalon, I can’t do the daily events because it’s in Kryta”. Why? Is it so far away that you can’t do it? Time-wise it’s similar (if not faster) than the current system

They are called Achievements for a reason, you need to achieve something to get them, no? And to top it off they make playing the content of the daily even MORE rewarding by adding something more to them.

The generic dailies don’t allow people to play how they want, they allow farmers to stay in their farming zone forever and never leave.

How about where it was earlier: play for 30-40 minutes when, how, and what you want, and you will have earned your daily?

But that would still force people to do things they do not want to do, if they want to finish the daily.
Why should your way of playing be the guideline?

I’m more concerned as to the reason for the log in incentives, is activity dwindling that much?

Do you really think that people that doesn’t play actively will suddenly start logging in because they get a small reward (that they won’t really have any use for because they are not playing in the first place) is added?

The better question is do you believe it was implemented for anything but inflating login numbers? I mean up to this point it’s been ArenaNets main objective to give players as little good loot as possible. From nerfing farms to just plain awful boss loot they haven’t exactly been tossing it around. Then suddenly a new system of daily logins that promises good loot as long as you continue to login? It’s fishy. The system isn’t for those who flat out quit. It is for those who are on the cusp. Those that went from logging on 5 times a week and are down to 1-2. ArenaNet is banking that if they login for a reward that some will continue to play, of those that do continue to play a few will spend money on gems. It’s all about increasing the odds that they make money through statistics. It’s this line of thinking and developing on metrics that ruins games. Instead of making the game fun to play they use cheap tricks to get numbers where the number crunchers want them.

I totally get the play how you want to earn the same rewards, however, the reward system in the game is already bonkers, really. I’d rather see more of the GW style, if you want x you have to play y and this is a step in that direction. I’m not talking about tokens you can trade for goods either, i’d be more inclined to see something like FoW or UW, if you want shards or ectos you have to play this content. This general everybody wins thing is really what makes things stale and boring and makes RNG even more glaring of an issue. Some of the drop tables might read like a novel at this point.

Given the direction of even just the forums, where we just lump everything into one section (or less sections than before), it’s nice to see anet at least wanting to have people do specific things for specific rewards, all of which are optional.

I do. I dont think that giving in game reward for logging into a game that one is not inclined to play is intended to significantly impact log in metrics.

I do, however, think that it is intended to provide players who are accustomed to a daily reward for logging in and playing whatever they want with a variation of that experience.

In order to get 10 points under the new system, I potentially have to spend a bit of time in places I don’t want to go (we’ll see how it works out in reality, depending on the pool of available achievements).

In order to get 10 points under the current system (today’s), I had to go out of my way to gather things, had to go out of my way to kill different types of monsters, and had to go out of my way to revive things.

I see no difference, except I may or may not have to go out of my way as much.

The better question is do you believe it was implemented for anything but inflating login numbers?

The best question is, how does this affect you negatively even if it is?

You are blowing things out of proportion here. It’s not like zone X,Y,Z take more than a split second to port to. All I see is: “Today I will level my alt in Ascalon, I can’t do the daily events because it’s in Kryta”. Why? Is it so far away that you can’t do it? Time-wise it’s similar (if not faster) than the current system

Go ahead, do your leveling of a low level alt in Orr and Dry Top. I’m sure it will be fun.

I may have little faith in Anet’s policies and procedures, but I do have enough faith to figure that they won’t make it so that low levels cannot complete dailies at all.

Besides, want your max points now? Ain’t gonna do that with a low level when Orr Slayer and Daily Fractal rolls around.

Dailies right now depend to some degree on your characters’ levels (i.e. Daily Orrian Killer won’t come up for players who can’t go to Orr) – I don’t see why they would change that.

Anyway, I am tentatively approving of the new system (and very excited to try it out).

Since some of the new achievements seem to be hard to complete in reasonable time frame, there should be more options for casual players, so I’m proposing a few new ones to be added to rotation. However, I included some which might fit better to a bit more experienced players. In any case, these would cater even larger group of players with various player skill levels. Note that these are only examples.

- block a goldseller
- report a goldseller
- go to hearts of the mists
- solo any Arah path
- get kicked from any soloed Arah path you’re trying to give away for free
- open Black Lion Trading Post window and click “promotions” -tab
- buy or sell any item in BLTP
- salvage any exotic item
- join “casuals only, no stacking, no zerker” -group with wearing full berserker set
- join “full meta zerk exp only” -group with wearing any set except berserker
- get kicked from any dungeon group
- get called as filthy elitist and/or l2p noob in pve or pvp
- swap weapons four times in <map/zone name/pvp>
- swap miniature in <map/zone name>
- type “Hello!” or “Hi!” in map chat in <map/zone name>.
- log in and out in less than 30 seconds
- jump five times in <map/zone name>

A new montly category could be “buy 200/400/800/1600/3200” gems with real currency". The final reward for this could be any gemstore item, including permanent contracts and any skins that have ever been in BL gemstore. This would provide an incentive for players to support the game they love even more, and help with wildly running inflation. Also, more options to get expensive skins are always welcome.

That’s something interesting I haven’t though yet. If the new systems uses this currently available ability (modify the dailies according to character level) then some of the concerns posted by people about the new system are no issues really

And along that note, as the previous post, this new system (since you can’t do everything in one area, it appears), means that we should start saving up for waypoint costs?

Time to do the dailies now: 0-10 minutes.
Time to do the dailies after update: 10-30-… minutes.

You’ve been able to do your current dailies in less than 60 seconds, AND have traveled to the future and know how long the new dailies will take…

Color me impressed.

Excellent analysis and summation of the problem. Anet doesn’t seem to realize that this game is already too grindy and we really don’t need any more busy work; we need fun and meaningful content to make the game worth playing!

Eh, where is this more busy work? If anything it sounds like lessening it?

The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

Chronomancer confirmed?

In all seriousness though, these changes seem fine to me and overall, seem like an improvement over the current system. However, I’ll wait until the patch is actually out to form a real opinion on it since plenty of times when Anet plans to do something it sound good on paper, but the execution is lacking.

Chronomancer would be an amazing class, with a focus on Quickness buffs and condition damage based on “Accelerated decay”.

Not quite, under the old system to get the 10 points you had to do one of the WvW achievements and one of the sPvP achievements. Under the new system you can get the 10 points by only doing 3 PvE achievements…big difference if that’s the only thing you play. ‘Forcing’ you to do things in PvE you might not normally do, okay but not great, forcing you do play game modes you dislike = not okay.

Sorry, I should have stated: I only really do WvW nowadays.

So that’s two WvW dailies that came through normal play, Leveler came normally, Condition Applier came normally (mesmer makes it easy), Recycler came normally (although if one doesn’t want to recycle and rather sells, that could be considered outside normal play), events normal, and kills normal.

I had to go out of my way to gather, because gathering doesn’t go hand in hand with attacking/defending things. I had to go out of my way to get kill variety, as there is no kill variety in attacking/defending things. And I had to go out of my way to get reviver, as there was little reviving to be done, either because too much AOE spam made it impossible to revive people or because nobody got downed or stayed downed long enough to revive them.
