It would be a start to fix the mess they made 1 year ago.

The best way Ascended should be treated

-same stat of exotics (just with infusion slots for fractal)
-can swap stats (you grinded for it, you deserve to retain a “reward” cause stats are taken away, and this would be far better than +stat)

This way you have ascended being exotic-level of power with a trade of some versatility in building (can’t make Ruby ring with emerald jewel, you’re forced to go ruby/ruby as stats) for a infusion slot (and forementioned stat swap), and at same time being a utility/build diversity helper with stat swap (like current legendaries, which are ascended in fact).

I would enjoy this.

Plays for fun: you don’t need ascended gear to do anything. Sure it would be nice to have it but nothing needs Ascended items in the game. Why would you NEED Ascended gear for alts?

My idea of playing for fun is min-maxing my builds for running dungoens, for at least 2 of my characters. I accepted farming trinkets because you don’t switch between them, but weapons? Those 2 characters alone would need 10 ascended weapons, so that’s a no.

It also includes min-maxing my builds for WvW roaming. And that’s even worse. The amount of different sets and weapons I need for only 4 characters would put me to farm for a year, and by that time some uber-ascended gear will be released.

Maybe your idea of “plays for fun” is being super casual and loging in to complete quests and do the living story.

I would love to see ascended gear changed in the following way:

1. Same stats as exotic, only difference is they have two upgrade slots (one for infusions, one for runes).

2. Defensive and offensive infusions removed from the game (materials / tokens refunded).

3. Idiotic number-grind mechanic (agony) removed from the game.

4. New infusions introduced that simply add a visual effect to the weapon or armour they are placed on (ex., fire / lightning / poison / smoke / frost / blood / etc.)

I think any competent player would gladly trade the slight stat advantage that ascended gear has (which you don’t really need, if you know how to play – and which just makes it harder for the developers to balance the game content) for the ability to customize the visual effects on his or her gear.

If only these forums allowed us to post polls…

you can link to external polls, most of those i have seen are majority in favor of the removal of ascended (someone will probably argue selection bias)

if this^ happened id likely return to making gem purchases, iirc correctly i spent a few times the cost of the CE in the months before lost shores (some was beta purchases) from which point i no longer funded the development in a direction that’s contrary to the reason i bought the game.

ascended was a terrible knee jerk reaction to the mmo tourist crowd that buy every new mmo in the hopes its the game they have become jaded with but better and then leave after the first month or two when they realize its not, and it wont magically change to be so

its supposed to fill a void that doesn’t exist, exotics were meant to be easy to obtain by design, with better looking ones like Volcanus or the anomaly or infinite light harder so that you grind for the prestige of looking awesome.

as it stands they are trying to use it to compensate for the lack of actual achievements. look at any achievement and 9/10 times you haven’t achieved anything you have grinded X Y times till you meet the criteria this is a far cry from proper achievements like fighting two bosses at once or getting a title that means something epic.

as it is i no longer WvW as i used to get through 1v1 and 1v2 fights with as little as 200 hp or less before ascended so don’t say the stats don’t make a difference. i refuse to WvW till ascended is removed or it becomes a part of SPvP and they sort out ranks

in PvE it does actually make a difference as loot allocation is based on dmg % contribution, if you have enough people hitting something and they are wearing ascended and you are not you wont get loot as your % will be below the cutoff, you could say it doesn’t matter but it feeds into the economy and inflation affecting your ability to buy things you need/want.

i wish the devs had a consistent vision and didn’t push out content they know is flawed

i dont understand how “exotics” being to easy to attain was a mistake. i think the wrong thought in the design is: “gear needs stats”.

there would be much easier balancing without stats on gear and skillbuilds would become much more relevant as well.
i dont care if they remove a tier or two from the game. if they want to make me happy, they just need to remove stats from gear alltogether.

I’d like to add aswell: totally alt-unfriendly: if you have 5 level 80s (I know people with as much as 10):

  • You need to max all armour and all weapon crafts:
    - 6×200g artificer, huntsman, weaponsmith, leathworker, armoursmith, tailor.
    - 6×60g for armour per character: 5×360g
    - 5×60g: lets take 5 weapons (I know that isn’t much) per character: 5×300g

In total you’d need
1200g (crafts) + 1800 (armour) + 1500 (weapons): 4500g

Do you get the picture?

The thing is, do you need to? If we split the playerbase into 2 types, the type that plays for progression and goals, and the type that just plays for fun.

Plays for fun: you don’t need ascended gear to do anything. Sure it would be nice to have it but nothing needs Ascended items in the game. Why would you NEED Ascended gear for alts?

Plays for progression: if you just make Ascended items equate to Exotics (ie, gets handed to you on a silver plate) then there’s nothing for a lot those people to achieve.

If it isn’t NEEDED then guess what, it shouldn’t have been introduced in the first place!
It’s not like this game is perfectly fine in every single aspect to warrant a time investment of the devs to create a new tier gear that ISN’T NEEDED.

There’s a difference between needing it in the game and the game needing it. By the same argument, Legendaries aren’t needed and cosmetics aren’t needed, heck, ..

Legendaries and cosmetics are skins, they don’t give any statistical advantage whatsoever and don’t contribute to the gameplay mechanics.

Depends on how you look at it. I’ve spent way more time dressing up my toons than getting Ascended gear, thus its an integral part of game mechanics to me. I’ve geared both my characters to full Ascended, and frankly speaking, I’m not noticing a difference between then and now at all, thus I feel the stats increase is rather cosmetic also. I get to see slightly higher numbers on my hero screen, but thats it.

what’s the point of the personal story? Lets scrap it all.

You mean.. no more Trahearne? By the five, yes! Count me in!

Not even going to reply to this…

A lot of people play MMOs to pursue goals or progression.

Completely agree, and that progression should be a horizontal one instead of a carrot-on-a-stick number crunch.

If people want to grind their nuts off for BiS gear there are a plethora of games that do grinding way better than GW2, just go play Korean MMO No. 324687513

How do you know the game will work without vertical progression of some sort? If you remember the biggest complaint everyone had about GW2 on release, it was that theres nothing to do after level 80. Given that there was plenty of cosmetics to case after back then, its clear that they meant vertical progression.

You can argue that it worked in GW1 but you gotta remember GW1 was a rather niche game which didn’t have the massive budget GW2 needs to run.

Why remove it? Just lower the stats so it’s equal to Exotic, but just with an infusion slot.

I would be totally fine with that but if they lower the stats they will get more people QQing about losing their stats cause they spent a lot of money getting them.

Hmm… At this point, we already know that ascended gear is just a symptom of their new philosophy of bringing players vertical progression in as many different ways as possible. If the gear was removed, there’s going to be an allegiance like title(WvW rank kinda already is that) boosting your stats, or some other means of “do this new content to become more powerful!”.

They won’t remove it, it’s just too much of a hassle even if their philosophy changed to what it was before. At best you and I can hope for a day on which they announce further VP will be postponed indefinitely and make Ascended attainable for everyone without any significant effort.

The only VP I’d be okay with is high level caps, even if boosting numbers will just attract treadmill kids, because those will be attained automatically by experiencing the content.

About the topic, if ascended items were removed (or tweaked in a non-grind way) some of us would return to the game. I’m still waiting for arena.net so they explain clearly how ascended gear is going to work once armor is released

I really like this idea. It’s exactly what progression should be like: more character customization. And customization is exactly what ascended gear removes from the game (one skin, missing stats, forced to stick with one build for a long time since it’s so hard to get, etc.).

Max stats gear was supposed to be easy to obtain. As it was in GW1.

Somehow along the way they thought that hardcore players would stay longer in the game if they added a new harder to obtain tier. I’m pretty sure this idea is wrong as I’ve seen hardcore players get all their ascended gear then stop playing. What keeps people in the game is the fun. ArenaNet have lost sight of that.

The “solution” is not to remove ascended gear, though, but to make them way easier to obtain.

If ascended gear is removed from the game or significantly nerfed, I will stop playing and depending money on gems. Simple as that.

Attaining ascended is relatively easy, as compared to other games where the best-in-slot gear is a constantly moving target.

ANet is guilty of poor communication and bad exotic design, not deceit. Ascended gear was probably planned from early on; it’s in how they introduced it that their error lies. With the CDI, it appears they are learning and improving.

Now, if they add another gear tier above ascended, I’ll also be kitten ed.

I still don’t get why it was a mistake to have exotic so easily obtainable – but then, I never got why it needs to be difficult to obtain max-lvl gear.

Two groups of players think that BiS gear needs to be difficult to obtain. One of those groups (A) think that time spent in game needs to matter for best stats (see games in which PvP BiS is obtained via ranks usually obtained by playing more matches than others). The other group (B) thinks that BiS gear should be gated behind difficulty (see MMO’s with raids). Oddly enough, the former group consists of people who play a lot, and the latter consists of people who desire hard content.

Exotic acquisition at launch was very much in tune with pre-launch statements about gear. ANet started introducing Ascended as obtainable via method B (FotM) but changed mostly to method A due to the outcry against Ascended being gated by any degree of difficulty. This suggests that ANet believed: that there were more players who wanted something to chase than who were content with exotics as BiS; and that time requirements would both please group A and also allow those who don’t play difficult content to get Ascended sooner or later.

I agree The hardcore need something to chase. Give them all the skins to chase they want. While your at it, How about giving them some good looking skins? I have not seen even one mindblowing skin in this game.

Well something to chase could be anything really. Doesn’t even need to be just skins, as long as it didn’t have an effect in PvP and isn’t necessary for most things in PvE.

I agree 100%. I made that suggestion because many people have worked very hard at them. So just removing them with no compensation seems a bit cruel. Letting them keep the skins or trading them for culteral armor seems appropriate.

I think it would be a very bad idea to remove ascended gear.

I do think it should be a reward for completing the hardest things in the game, for example reaching fractal level 55, or getting 100k kills in WvW, soloing Lupi, beating Liadri on 3+ toons, etc.

This way, there would be appropriate rewards for appropriate players. Instead, its go to newbie zone 1 and farm some trees and metal, go to newbie zone 2 and farm some other trees and metal, go to newbie zone 3 and farm yet another trees and metal, etc. kinda stupid. Where is the challenge in the journey ?

The only problem I have with your explanation is that Ascended are not gained through difficult content (but through zerging). It just requires a horrible amount of gold, which again, is earned by the most easy activities: champ farming.

So Anet made a gear tier that is:

  • Accessible after playing easy content that doesn’t require any skill from the player (champ farm)
  • For players who want hard content?

Horrible game design in that case, cause players who want hard activities are not farming champions pressing #1, but are usually found in:
- World vs. World small scale or duels
- ‘Harder’ dungeons such as Arah and fractals

There’s no way they would refund you for mats. It would be a logistical nightmare. You’d have to eat it the same way people did other times changes were made.

-when magic find gear was eliminated.

Karma grinding was incredibly long and boring. Remember that Karma Jugs weren’t in for like 2 months so it was purely events. At 400 karma an event, 5 minutes per event, and you’re looking at ~9 hours per item. That’s 54 hours for 6 pieces of armor and does not include the weapon, runes, trinkets, rings, amulet, or sigils. Karma jugs made it more viable since 1 jug was worth about an hour of farming. If you were smart and saved karma from 1-80 you might have enough karma for 1 item. All of this assuming that karma sets had the stats you wanted and weren’t broken at the time.

Dungeons gave ~5 tokens per boss and 15 for a path completion. That means ~25-30 per run if I remember correctly. That meant a full set of gear(~2400 tokens) would require 80 runs. At around an hour a run the math is easy, 80 hours for a single set of armor and again that doesn’t include runes, sigils, trinkets, rings, and amulet. Now they made it better with 60 tokens for a first run so that cuts it down to 40 hours for a set of armor/weapons. Of course this assumes that the stats you want are in a dungeon being run and that dungeon takes an hour to complete. Some dungeons are faster and some are longer. Remember that you’re not in full exotics trying to farm this stuff either so it’s no the speed runs we have now.

Crafting was arguably the easiest, but required a lot of time(gated) and mat farming for the stats you might want(not all mats dropped from pentinent/shelter farming :P). This meant farming Orichalcum and ancient wood which we all know are time gated. So while they were easier to farm as far as time spent than karma/dungeons they were time gated.

Gold farming was the fastest route. Remember when 2g an hour was really good? You could expect to pay 3g-5g per exotic. Figure 14 items(6 armor, 2 rings, 2 trinkets, 1 amulet, 2 1hands, 1 2hand) at 4g is 56g. Just figure another 15g for runes/sigils(could be more or less depending on what you wanted). And we are looking at ~70g. At 2g an hour that’s 35 hours, 3g is 23.

WvW was a complete joke to try and get gear. Unless you ran a large organized group there was simply no way to farm enough badges to get a set of gear in a timely manner. This seriously wasn’t even an option.

Now I know what you’re thinking! Combine the methods! Just assuming 2g an hour farming orr for gold/karma you would still need to farm for 29 hours making 54g and enough karma for 3 pieces of gear. If we factor in karma jugs(1 per day) and 2 hour grinding session per day that’s still ~27 hours. The money you make doing dungeons is probably enough to pay for the accessories/sigils/runes. I won’t even include crafting into the equation simply because I don’t have data on how often the mats dropped at farming spots.

20+ hours of pure farming is not something most people consider “easy” and certainly not fun. 40 runs of a single dungeon is more than I probably did on all the vanilla WoW endgame 5-10man dungeons combined for a full set of items. Remember this is all for a single set of items for a single build on 1 character. Most need 2-3 sets of armor for different things(WvW, Events, Dungeons). Then you have those that like alts for specific things. 20+ hours does not constitute “easy” to obtain max stats and that’s what this game was supposed to be. Easy to obtain max stats and hard to obtain skins.

It might win me back, at least to try things out. I left the game mostly because of AN going back on their word with BS like Ascended Gear.

I doubt it will happen though.

4. New infusions introduced that simply add a visual effect to the weapon or armour they are placed on (ex., fire / lightning / poison / smoke / frost / blood / etc.)

Sounds good, implementing it might be hard though.

Not trivial, but not all that hard.

All they need to do is create one generic version of each effect for each weapon type and for each body part of each race.

That would be the default effect, applied if the actual item doesn’t come with “effect nodes” (i.e., information about where to place particle emitters, etc.).

Ascended armour and weapons would, naturally, be created with customized versions of the effects. If the armour was transmuted to an older model, the effect would go back to the generic one.

Since Arena Net probably has data about item popularity (i.e., how many players wear item X), the most popular skins could eventually get updated to have customized effects, if the default one didn’t look quite right on them.

The gear is INCREDIBLY accessible. If you play for only an hour a day, you should have at least 2 ascended weapons, and full trinkets by now.

You mean since release? In other words, if you’ve been playing for about 500 hours ? To get two weapons ?

Yeah, “incredibly accessible”…

I remember I farmed 500 + 390 × 2 = 1280 badges for my invader amulet and rings, lol.
But I used to zerg a lot and do all 4 jumping puzzles every day.

All I’m expecting is that they’ll make it much easier to obtain in a few months, just like they did with karma, dungeon tokens, WvW badges and gold in general.

Right now, I can make 250 badges a week with rather casual gaming. 1-2 hours average a day. Compared to that, the gold needed for ascended is ridiculous.

I have a friend who got to level 80 and crafted an ascended weapon in < 1 month of creating his account. He is not exactly a hardcore player and only plays at night when kids are sleeping so yeah, not that hard.
