So I logged back into my GW1 account yesterday, just to have a potter about for old times sake.

Did a few “solo” runs including some of the old stuff that I developed for the Ranger’s Beacon in The Jade Sea and The Deep.

Grabbed henchies and heroes and had a few bashes at dropping a froggy sceptre.

Took some folks on a guided tour of the Fissure

Went and capped a Black Widow solo – just because I could.

and then something stopped me in my tracks. I realised that I cared about my toons, felt connected to them. They had a personality and playing the game was FUN!

More than that, I could play GW1 in various styles and no part of the game world was “off limits” or restricted.

And that’s where GW2 has failed. Sure it looks pretty, but there simply isn’t the connection, my toons have no personality and the game is an un-ending grind for cosmetic skins, short term FPS “shoot and scoot” mentality and Anet wasting effort on trivial “improvements” rather than letting players PLAY in a style that suits them.

Sad that after such a short time GW2 has become a pale imitation of its predecessor.

This !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still play GW1 and feel the same.

For any reason they did the exact opposite of their GW2 trailer video.
This one where they say they take everything good from GW1 and mix it with new awesome ideas.

What they actually did is they too everything cool from GW1 out of the game and mixed it with some new but not working ideas.

Please A-Net i beg you…….

Bring back
-Multiple skills to choose from
-Bring back death penalty
-Bring back Monster Necros who raise stuff from our bodys
-Take away reviving from everyone but Guardian and Necro
- Bring back Cantha and Elona

this is the only thing i see making this comunity great as it onced was

In my experience, most people who started this game in Guild Wars 1 feel this way to some degree, including me. I was more attached to my Guild Wars 1 characters than I am to my Guild Wars 2 characters. That said, some people I know who didn’t play Guild Wars 1 are attached to these characters.

And my attachment to certain characters has grown as I find more ways to “make them mine”.

But it still doesn’t feel the same was Guild Wars 1 did.

" -Take away reviving from everyone but Guardian and Necro"

How about no. That is just a stupid idea.

Personally, all of my GW2 characters have their own personality and I feel connected to them. The story given to them by the game is not always their true story in my mind and I enjoy GW2 as is.

Are there issues? Sure….every game has issues. And really, I don’t want henchmen/heroes back, I like that weapon skills are static.

Death penalty sort of exists in that if you die too many times you don’t get a downed state and you’re just dead, but this could be changed up so that each death gives you less starting health. That could be interesting.

Necros actually creating minions from dead enemies would be good but would have issues with multiple necros in an area in the open world. With GW1 it was instanced world zones so it could be done that way without one necro griefing another by exploiting the corpses first.

Cantha- meh. Elona- I want my dervish.

If GW2 is not working then why has it out lasted 2 major mmorpg that play a lot like it? GW1 at the end of the day was not a true mmorpg it was an online game with co-op GW2 is a full open world mmorpg there are just truth to dealing with that type of game vs just the simple “also has online play” type of game.

How about skill choices that allow us to build characters not clones?

How about Trait lines that make any sort of sense?

How about henchies/heroes that allow players to do dungeons when they want to and to use the class/builds they want rather than be excluded by the so called “LEET”.

How about a drop system that actually works.

How about something more than grinding for cosmetics?

How about an end-game?

How about an expansion?

GW1 induces feelings, GW2 is just becoming a flat, bore-fest.

GW2 is not an MMORPG. It is, maybe a MMOFPS. There is no RPG in GW2 because there is no freedom to create anything other than cookie cutter toons. And at that there is a desire to make all classes the same. Take away the holy-trinity and every toon just becomes same old same old.

GW1 had WAY more RPG to it, way more Co-op and WAY more community.

I’m gonna reply with the same reply I give to people who are extremely unhappy about the game but give unrealistic suggestions: If you’re that distraught and the game makes you upset, then why are you still playing?

I for one enjoy GW2 VERY much. I try to branch out to all areas of the game, sPVP, WvW, PvE, Fractals, World Bosses, Guild Missions. And I have a BLAST. Part of what made GW1 so great was the story. And GW2 is finally building on that aspect. That is the only area where I felt something was missing in GW2 at launch. But now that they’re adding depth and breadth to the game’s story, I think GW2 is coming into its own. If you don’t want to be along for the ride, then… don’t.

I understand and agree with what you are saying, but I think it is more than just the story that is lacking in GW2. I think it is the connection to more than just a few NPC’s.

We had so much connection with Cynn, Mhenlo, Koss, Vekk, and many, many other NPC’s. Yes through the story they became characters we felt for. Other than the three order mentors, I don’t get that feeling from any of the GW2 NPC allies. I realize they are trying to build a connection with the DE2 NPC’s, but none of them have the same depth that the GW1 characters had IMO.

I think not only the story and it’s superb telling gave us connection to the game, but it’s very interesting characters did as well.

One thing I will also add. There was a lot more in GW1 than just killing things required to complete missions. Sure dungeons have some puzzles, etc. But most ‘missions’ here are just kill ’em and complete.

The connection thing comes from the difference in how the games were structured. Guild Wars 1 was far far more linear than Guild Wars 2. Everything in every story was in order. You did A, B, C, D.

The world around you supported the missions you were doing. No surprise there. If you were doing missions in Ascalon, you were fighting charr in the open world. But in Guild Wars 2, which is not linear, it’s not that easy to pull that off.

I know I play humans sometimes in Charr areas, something much harder to do in early game in Guild Wars 1.

But it’s much easier to do that sort of thing in a completely instanced world. This is why stories in MMOs tend to involve the open world less, or your characters story most often isn’t tied into the story of the world. They’re separate.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both systems. I did feel more attached to my Guild Wars 1 characters.

But I still prefer the open world of an MMO to the instanced, linear game that was Guild Wars 1.

Both games have their merits but i cant see myself going back once I did everything GW 1 had to offer. I have plenty games to play besides this one though, mostly mmos themselves, so I’m at no loss if I take a few weeks off of this.

As for attachment I felt more attached to my characters here than I did in GW 1. There was no RP guilds as far I knew. In GW 1 I pretty much got looks and stares.

I agree with you here too.

I like the open world. However we do have instances in our personal stories and in the LS. None of the storytelling here has made me feel as connected to the world as I did in GW1.

And to be honest, the interview dialog scenes of the personal story paled in comparison to the cut scenes in GW1. If we were going to have less cut scenes, they could have at least made them spectacular and engaging. The two character conversations were poor at best.

It’s not just the cut scenes though. The world reinforced the story in Guild Wars 1. You were never ever really out of your story. Whatever you were doing in the world pertained to your story.

If you think about Guild Wars 1, the game, the ENTIRE game, was your personal story.

You just can’t do that in an MMO.

There is definitely truth to all of that. I guess I’ve had a different experience. I’ve tried not to take the game in all at once while I play through it and have had time to reflect on characters and develop them further in my head a little. Keil, Mai Trin, Destiny’s Edge (especially Caithe), Queen Jennah, Trahearne, have all made an impact on me and I genuinely care what happens to them.

I CAN say in support of your viewpoint, I do miss the connection/mystery around Gwen from GW1. Honestly I’ve never experienced a mystery in a video game that I was enamored by more than hers. All the way through the GWEN expansion, I would occasionally think back to her presence in the Pre-Searing and wonder just what happened to her. I want a connection like THAT in GW2 for sure.

As far as missions go, I think they’re attempting to take things in that direction in Dry Top/Maguuma. The Zephyr crystals vs. the Inquest, Tootsie, Rescue the Zephyrites, and Nochtil are all fairly unique iterations on events. Yes, they’re about killing things half the time but the fact that Anet is moving (at least slightly) away from just pew pew and win style quests is a positive sign to me. Hopefully as we move into other zones closer to Mordremoth, we’ll start getting even more quests that are interesting/fun to complete.

LOL -GW2 IS AN MMO – GW1 is NOT. An MMO – (Massive Multiplayer Online) – means just that – there are plenty of people on the maps. In GW1, all you had was your team on the map – that does not fit the description of an MMO.

With GW1, you were not at the whim of a team, while GW2 you are especially in WvW and major events. I liked GW1, but GW2 is a much better game than GW1 ever was.

I don’t see it.

I came to Guild Wars from Warhammer Online and it satisfied an itch(es) that WAR couldn’t (or at least refused to, the tools were seemingly already in-game but not being utilized). But ultimately I ran into an annoyance(es), making it the fifth online game I couldn’t bring myself to play past two years.

I’m connected to my 2 characters.
I’ve never had this much fun before.
I don’t feel restricted or find anything off limits (like I did in Guild Wars).
I’m not feeling a grind (because I’m not doing it).
I don’t play First-Person Shooters.
I’m most certainly playing the game how I want to.

I feel, from my experience, that while Guild Wars 2 is flashier and incorporates elements I like (choice mainly) it’s still the lesser of the two.

I’m not sure if that’s me looking at Guild Wars through rose-tinted glasses but it had simply things I liked but in the previous game I felt more connected: felt like a hero. In Guild Wars 2 I feel more like a nanny, there just to decide which playground to take the kids (I’m looking at you Trahearne).

Then there’s simply game mechanics I miss that seem weird to not have, since Guild Wars had it:

1. The replaying main missions option – I can not overstate how much I used to replace missions in Guild Wars, just to help others, try a new team/build setup etc, and I cannot overstate how cheesed off I was when, at release, I went through Claw Island for the first time, was really excited and wanted to do it again and found out it was a one time per character thing.
2. Saving your builds <——————— why? How is it “previous gen” to have such a useful feature.
3. Henchmen / Heroes – while I do sorely miss heroes Guild Wars 2 is an entirely different beast but I do wish something like dungeon related heroes could be used – for those times you just don’t want people to leave or wait around for people to want to do the dungeons. Yes, I know a lot of people can solo-duo stuff, but sometimes you just want to play your way.
4. Saving your build and being able to share your build setups.
5. Town/Instance selection: megaserver is nice but it’s still not working right. “Right, so let’s all meet up in Metrica Province district 20.”, “done!”. Choice is nice.
6. RP: my derv (or characters) had a role to play in the party whereas I don’t really feel that some role playing connection in Guild Wars 2, though I can say that could just be because how I choose to play. You had to think a bit more with your team setups in Guild Wars (if you didn’t just copy and pasta the metas). Guild Wars 2 just seems to have a lot of flash and gimmick.

That’s only a few, I could really make a list. And yes, that’s just my opinion.

Guild Wars 2 has a lot of good stuff to it. Do not get me wrong, I enjoy the game when I play, but for a next-gen title I expected an MMORPG version of Guild Wars on steroids, all the best options and then some. Guild Wars 2 is successful but part of that success was due to it’s hype, it still misses a lot of stuff that keeps people playing. Again, my opinion.

Fair point, the Zhaitan and Mordremoth story lines have been somewhat similar. But I disagree that there is no creativity going into the way this story works. And in addition, no that is not at ALL what I was speaking about. I love the characters they’ve come up with in Destiny’s Edge 2, they’re expanding to areas around the in-game world and providing for unique experiences, and the fact that they’re delving into the game’s lore FINALLY is more than enough incentive for me to love the new storyline.

Really you’re missing out on the finer details of the story and character development.

Also, Mordremoth doesn’t turn living beings into minions like Zhaitan did.

Also also, I agree that the dragons are fairly lackluster as villains. Which is why I hope they give Mordremoth a voice. The idea that each elder dragon gets stronger and more sentient as the story progresses would be an amazing touch to the way the world works.

I kind of liked solo’ing stuff in GW1. Something that’s hard/ineffective to do in GW2. Kind of allowed me to play whenever, for however long. With GW2 if I want to do a dungeon I have to find a group of people (hopefully competent enough), and then I can’t exactly ditch them half way through (some paths are too long, would feel bad considering how long it took to assemble a group) if I had to go do something else (life calls). WvW is about the same, unless you roam you have to find a zerg and stick to it, though you can ditch at any time. The only game mode that allows me to play solo is sPvP.

Yeah it is an MMO, where I’m “supposed” to play with others… but I shouldn’t really feel that playing with others is overwhelming cumbersome (dungeons). In comparison WoW has/had a good dungeon system, being able to queue for a dungeon, having a team assembled for you, teleporting in to the dungeon, and generally all the dungeons aren’t long and are rewarding (till you get all the gear… at which point you can do them for fun or not). GW2 fall short on not having a queue system, on length of dungeons, and on rewards (especially thanks to DR).

As for end-game grind for cosmetics…
Ha. It’s more like end-game TP flipping for gold, to get gems to get cosmetics off cash shop.

- Bring back Cantha and Elona

None of these have anything to do with OPs comment and most of them are actually a step backwards…

If GW2 is not working then why has it out lasted 2 major mmorpg that play a lot like it?

I’d say OP was using hyperbole but hyperbole is purposeful overstatements not intended to be taken seriously (no one expects it to take a literal millions years or for the place to be a literal million miles away). So if it’s not hyperbole…
But for the most part I think OP is confusing his point of view with well reality. GW2 is not working for him, so he assumes that he’s perspective is flawless and universal and thus is a representation of reality i.e. because GW2 isn’t working for him obviously it’s not working at all.

GW1 induces feelings, GW2 is just becoming a flat, bore-fest.

Well it’s clearly inducing a feeling of dislike in you :P

GW2 is not an MMORPG. It is, maybe a MMOFPS. There is no RPG in GW2 because there is no freedom to create anything other than cookie cutter toons. And at that there is a desire to make all classes the same. Take away the holy-trinity and every toon just becomes same old same old.

GW1 had WAY more RPG to it, way more Co-op and WAY more community.

I think you’re confusing the genre of RPGs with the mechanics usually associated with RPGs. Essentially by your definitions something like Final Fantasy VII is not an RPG because it has neither trait-lines or holy trinity… So I have disagree by stating your definition of RPG is somewhat limited to a purely mechanical (and a very small pool of mechanics at that) view.

What 2 major MMO’s? And GW1 is still the #1 game that’s 10X better than GW2 even if it’s NOT an MMO.

Number one in what regard? I think you’re confusing your opinion for fact.

Missed my first 2 days of GW2 since release of AA ready for my 3rd day and having a blast. Type at ya later.

Glad you’re having fun. Not exactly sure what you’re saying (are you currently playing AA or GW2? What do mean missed? As in ‘longed for’ or as in ‘missed out’) but glad you’re happy.

You just can’t do that in an MMO.

Well not in a open world MMO… well not without heavy phasing and restrictions on where you can go and when.

I liked GW1, but GW2 is a much better game than GW1 ever was.

At least mechanically, man I’m not sure when I’ll ever motivate myself to finish my HoM…

I miss that choice to be able to play with others or just do it yourself: open world is open to all, the whole MMO aspect but dungeons are not. I miss being able to run it myself (with or without a party) as I could in GW. I miss that choice.

Some people like different play styles. For myself, going back to try GW1 after playing GW2? I don’t really care for it. It’s just not that fun for me. I understand there’s a huge difference between two games that are under the same name, but saying that GW2 is “just not working”, when so many people enjoy it?

That speaks more of you personally having an issue with the playstyle, than with something intrinsically wrong with it.

Hi.

I’m a Gwamm with a 50/50 HoM.

I prefer GW2. I believe that the community aspect in GW1 thrived because PvE was had 3-7 macro bots called henchmen and heroes that could be flagged so you could talk while doing non-elite area material.

I also believe that people often look at GW1 through rose-tinted goggles. Things that I remember the VAST majority of the community complaining about (skill capping, wall scrape exploration, PvP that locked out newbies for months) are now things that people inexplicablly put in the positive column.

I think there is a lot that GW2 could learn from GW1, but in no way, shape, or form do I believe that GW1 was better in any way outside of story delivery. An the LS2 is adopting the GW1 mission style of story, which is a wonderful change.

I understand that this is a forum and that we are all entitled to our opinion, but as a GW1 vet, please remember that there are plenty of us playing GW2 and enjoying ourselves. Keep that in mind next time you see a God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals title in GW2.

Thanks and have fun in whatever game you play…just don’t spend your time trying do advertise for it on another game’s forums…it only builds animosity towards you AND the game that you play.

Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc

I loved that place in Guild Wars, it was such a nice place but in Guild Wars 2 is was such a let down. I wanted to know what that big statue in the back was, at least, but it doesn’t even exist in the GW2 version. I was so cheesed off >:|

That is very true that an true MMO cannot acomplish that. Even saying that however, one of the things that made GW1 so compelling was the excellent storytelling and lore built around it. While a true MMO cannot completely wrap you in your personal story at every turn, what story that is there can be engrossing and engaging. As much as I thought the personal story was OK, I didn’t feel that sense of eagerness to find out what happened next.

I’m not bashing the game because I love the game. However, all the things I loved about GW1 were NOT in GW2 as advertised. I loved the story. Every story in GW2. Side quests everything. None of them felt rote as much here does to me.

I think the new season the LS is a good start on making my involvement in the world more personal, it still hasn’t grabbed me like the stories in the first game. Not saying that won’t happen, but it’s not there yet for me.

I dunno, I loved the original Guild Wars, but I feel like I’m more connected to the NPCs and characters of Guild Wars 2, personally.

But if you like the original Guild Wars more, that’s great. But you don’t need to insult people or assert your opinions on others.

I didn’t notice anyone trying to assert their opinions on anyone else. Even reading back through the thread everything seems very civil for a GW2 forum thread.

Mostly it is just people expressing what they do and don’t like.

For me, I love GW2, but it doesn’t hold me enthralled like GW1 did. I’m not trying to tell anyone else that they should feel the same.

I just feel like some people are being rather aggressive, but maybe that’s just me.

I generally try to stay off of forums nowadays as I feel like they’re pretty toxic, at least for me.

And?

I understand that this is a forum and that we are all entitled to our opinion, but as a GW1 vet, please remember that there are plenty of us playing GW2 and enjoying ourselves. Keep that in mind next time you see a God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals title in GW2.

And I wonder, how many like me, are not enjoying ourselves?

That might make an interesting poll for Anet.

I was under the impression that your initial post (and this post) conveyed that Guild Wars players would relate to your issues with Guild Wars 2. So, some people that played Guild Wars (including me) typed that they cannot relate (in a few cases, not entirely).

Perhaps your stance requires reevaluation.

Seems like many GW players DO relate to my opinions. No doubt some will and some won’t. What is more important perhaps is that ANet needs to be listening to all opinions and perhaps, shouldn’t have advertised GW2 as being a sequel for GW1 – it isn’t.

The community and ANet should be focussed on making GW2 better – and not simply accepting a half- kitten d job where the focus seems to be on the trivial. e.g. did any of us really expect GW2 to be dominated by TP economics and insider trading? I don’t remember GW1 really struggling due to a lack of a TP – heaven forbid players actually had to trade with each other… oh my!

you love gw1 too much to bring much to the table(discussion) here. At least thats how the thread starts to look the more you read it. The OP seems to be less focused on loving gw1, but each post you say after focus it on liking gw1. Try not to turn this into a gw1 vs gw2 debate, its only going to derail your real ideas.

This is a different game, what do you think, that would make sense to add to this game/gameworld would improve it?

what is the core of what you feel is missing in gw2?

As for me, i have come to the realization, that gw2 lacks an ability for solo/small groups to jump into activities that matter/have a clear direction, and are designed to be challenging.

If you’re not enjoying yourself, then why on earth are you wasting time playing the game? The reason(at least it seems to me) to play ANY game is for the enjoyment of playing that game…….if that is absent from the game for the player, then what is the point of playing?

I mean seriously…..look at your above statement. Do you actually play games that you don’t enjoy?? If so, WHY????

I’d rather have him explain what his perception of “depth” in a game is. That’s a very vague term for something that he obviously has a very specific state of thought about.

I mean seriously…..look at your above statement. Do you actually play games that you don’t enjoy?? If so, WHY????

His answer is going to be along the lines of, “To support ArenaNet because I loved Guild Wars 1.” Or some other comment about this being a legacy franchise.
