This is something that has kinda bugged me from the get-go. The tone and style of Guild Wars 1 was fairly dark, post-searing… The dialogue was fairly serious, people talked about serious things. Even though the storyline was kinda disjointed, it still had an air of legitimacy. As the series “matured”, we saw a little bit more levity and comedy in the game – such as Kilroy Stoneskin – or the quest NPC in Factions who implies, more or less, that he needs you to help him get viagra to make his wife happy.

Guild Wars 2 seems to take everything a bit far. The entire game feels like one running gag after the next. The dialogue feels like parody more than something to be taken seriously. The asura, for god’s sake, are an entire race devoted to parody – everything they say is in the context of something outlandish, goofy, or absurd. It reminds me of when you clicked units in Warcraft too many times, and they said funny out-of-character things – well the entire game of GW2 feels like one big reel of out-of-character one-liners, inside jokes, and running gags.

The character of Tybalt, for example, is one running gag after the next. One mission involves him disguising himself, (via magic of course) as a woman and … talking like a woman… and just acting like a complete and total kitten I’m sure the GW2 writers thought all this was terribly clever, but I found it to be a bit tiresome. What I’m really saying is that I would have been much more receptive to some mature writing that actually treats the audience like they’ve got an above-average IQ.

The whole game feels like that guy who thinks he’s a whole lot funnier than he really is. He’s always elbowing you, making wisecracks at everything…. eh eh eh eh eh – It’s like for the love of god TAKE SOMETHING SERIOUSLY. Not everything is a gag, A-net. Not everything has to be some goofy inside joke. Can we get some actual writers to do some serious storylines for Guild Wars? You’ve got an enormous amount of lore in the Guild Wars universe and it feels like you haven’t tapped into any of it.

We get it, A-net … you can make a joke. But can you actually tell a compelling fantasy story? I guess we’ll see.

Maybe because at the end of it all no matter how dark or serious the storyline could be we all just KNOW it’s a game and that we WILL defeat the bad guys so why even try and make it too serious? Also at times when companies do try and make things more serious than they should they then get bad rep for doing so and get told to lighten up a bit. It’s the old saying you can’t please everyone all the time I guess.

I also guess they want to be seen as a fun company giving us fun content. Is that such a bad thing?

I find much of the story compelling and certainly serious. The personal story and the storymode on dungeons can oftentimes be very serious. For example, Twilight Arbor and Sorrow’s Embrace are very personal dungeon storylines for Caithe and Zojja (respectively). Sure, there’s levity in the game, but honestly it’s there in the real world too. A story can be compelling and amusing at the same time.

As to Tybalt I thought he was one of the best characters in the personal storyline because he actually had character. A lot of people don’t have character in the storyline but every once in awhile you’ll encounter a fantastic character that keeps you invested in the story.

I thought the tone of Prophecies was a little too “we need to do this straight faced it’s our first game people need to take us seriously”. I found that tiresome that there was little to no character or levity whatsoever. It was nice to find the same level of storyline with the added bonus of levity here and there in the Factions, Nightfall, and EoTN storylines. I believe that same level of seriousness and levity has extended into Guild Wars 2.

If you don’t like their humor, that’s fine. But one way or another, Mad King Thorn’s jokes always slay the audience.

I find it interesting that I had no trouble seeing the story be serious. Tybalt had the effect of making everything jokingly, but while playing my charr? I really didn’t see it as anything but serious and intent.

As my human, there was ample tongue-in-cheek but that was because Logan actually lightened up and wasn’t going “jilted ex” on Rytlock :P

Lol, I personally enjoy the game’s humor. I think the Asura are hilarious. But I find that the game does get serious when it’s necessary. It’s mainly the ambient conversations that are lighthearted.

I also have to say that I find it a bit funny that if the situation was in such a dire state (after 250 years after all) what have the dragons done? It seems to me they have done very little and if the story was pitched from a different angle we could end up being the BAD GUYS killing off their kind – how MEAN!

I’m serious, don’t we the races of Tryia have many strongholds and cities which seem totally safe? Really when do you ever see this HUGE threat from the dragons. Oh yes that’s right when we go to THEM. Uh oh I have opened up a whole can of worms now. :P

Yeah i agree, i love the game but the story is laughable, the dialog being the biggest issue with it :P The dialog is just…. uhhh… why did you say that… that is so… akward…
:D

Sure it can be funny, but funny is not what i look for in a compelling fantasy story :P (there can be humour ofc, but there is nothing but that in gw2)

The horrible dialog reaches everywhere, even what about every character keeps repeating in this game ‘’Fight what cannot be fought ’’ ‘’know what cannot be known’’

This is part of the reason (the other being the really bad dialog) why I don’t like the personal story, but love the dungeon story of Destiny’s Edge. Sometimes this game just feels like it’s rated ‘Everyone 10+’, and not Teen. It’s a bit annoying.

I agree in a way. The humor in GW1 was intelligent. It’s like somebody else is writing it now. I liked Tybalt but it would have been better if he were more like Pyre in GW1… the charr, like the asuras, are trivialized and made a butt of stupid jokes about eating meat. At least the charr seem to be a race that can’t be visually trivialized in the cutscenes, where my human characters seem to be absent, looking around in space while they plan to save the world. It’s hard to believe my human archer is the commander of the federation when she is always playing with her hair. I get the feeling the developers of this kind of stuff are on the superficial side. In GW1 the humor itself was serious, as good humor really is. When I began returning to Lineage II, the worst game in the world, I knew the fuzzy feeling for GW2 had worn off. Now I find myself playing TERA more and more.

I agree in a way. The humor in GW1 was intelligent.

I counter with one quest:
“Drakes on a Plain”.

I’ll follow up with
“Hapless Chong” and “Hai Len” from Canthan New Year

And one final poke with:

“Grandfather Kringle” and “Elder Skruuj”.

No, there was stuff in Guild Wars 1. If I looked hard enough I bet there’s a few in Prophecies I could pull up.

It’s like somebody else is writing it now. I liked Tybalt but it would have been better if he were more like Pyre in GW1… the charr, like the asuras, are trivialized and made a butt of stupid jokes about eating meat.

That’s strange, I just finished my charr’s first three chapters of personal story and they were very serious, starting off with:
- Your warband destroyed down to one other member.
- Your Blood Legion superior basically kicking you while you’re down, then goading you into insubordination.
- An arena match to prove you’re worthy of leadership.
- Building your own warband back up.
- Taking out a Flame Legion attack with artillery and sniper support.
- Throttling a Haven full of ‘Scrappers’ to get your own back.
- Having to deal with one of your dead warband mates becoming a Risen, then put him down personally.

I’m not seeing any of this as “a joke”.

Furthermore, there’s the constant Separtist sorties in Diessa Plateau against settlements which truly can be destructive, a giant who cleans house in Nageling needing practically a small army to put down, the Dragonbrand . . .

No, the charr are not a joke in and of themselves but they are the butt of some jokes. So are the other races, which I can go into if you like.

In GW1 the humor itself was serious, as good humor really is.

I present you one last example: Mad King Thorn.

In Guild Wars 2 he was a far more serious and threatening presence than he was before. And all he had to do was corrupt bits of Lion’s Arch and sow hints he was coming back until he was a multi-phase boss fight. After which he was too weak to do more than crack jokes again.

The story gets more serious as you advance, and some orders are clearly intended to have more serious story arcs than others, unfortunately it is almost impossible to tell what is going to be what at the moment of choosing a path, In my first character I chose the Order of Whispers because I assumed (wrongly as it turned out) that it was going to be a story arc with intrigue, betrayal and maybe even “making though choices” as agent Ihan claims, instead I got the silliest story in the game with Disney secret agent Tybalt guiding me from goofy adventure to goofy adventure.
For my second character I chose vigil and there I found a story that takes itself seriously with a more realistic mentor and was much more happy with the results.

The same is true of the other personal stories, again with the same caveat that it is near impossible to anticipate what will be more serious story wise.

This was my only issue with Tybalt. We were given a grinning, semi-goofy guy and I had just come off Agent Ihan who had been all business. I could stand it because it was somewhat endearing and fun to play out. I just imagined my character thinking to himself “I signed up for this . . . I took down a corrupt leader in the Seraph and avenged Falcon Company’s loss, and now I’m doing a drinking contest with pirates.”

And the whisper of my character’s long-long ancestor going:

“You know, Jurah would have never stood for this. He had no trouble putting that buffoon Norgu in his place.”

Obvious spoilers:

Hey! Remember that mission where you have to destroy a risen ship and the vigil(?) demolition expert dies?
Afterwards you have to track down his wife and explain it to her. She doesn’t take it well, blames you for his death and you char states that he’ll have to live with it forever.
Those sure were goofy old times.

In my opinion, the game took a turn for the dark when I got to the Straits of Devastation. Maybe it’s because of the Risen. Before that point you fight mostly risen from the mainland, washed up on the beaches, but in Orr you get to meet the original undead and they’re much more creepy.

I don’t know why. Unlike most of the other undead factions I found in many other games the Risen really got under my skin for some reason. Perhaps it was those farmers – raking the dead earth forever in a mockery of what they did in life.
There’s a pact researcher in Malachor’s Leap who’s looking for clues about her orrian ancestors. She tells you an interesting tidbit- she believes that the risen here are peaceful, they just keep doing whatever they were doing when the places was plunged into the ocean by Zaithan. It’s only when they meet a living person that they go berserk. She made it sound like the Pact are the vicious intruders. Interesting stuff imho and certainly not goofy.

Then there’s the event in Cursed Shore (south of that farming tunnel) where a sylvari tells you that he can feel that the trees around him are also undead and that they WANT to kill him and everyone who’s alive. I gotta admit that was pretty creepy.

I think that the game provides both goofy content and more serious stuff. I hope they keep things balanced, it’s the best way.

I think it’s got a decent handle on both sides of the coin. As irritating as Traherne is, the last leg of the personal story (orr and onward) is pretty darn serious. The ambient conversation in the world is usually light because… well… look where you are. When something happens it’s very obvious to overhear event criers because the entire tone of the voiceovers changes.

It’s a joke to us now… but can you honestly remember the first time you were standing around, looking at a big megalaser, and then heard someone say “There’s something in the water…”

I think the general levity of the NPCs in peaceuful circumstances makes a good contrast to the seriousness of combat. I think the general tongue-in-cheek with the pact in orr feels appropriate because they’re an entrenched army humor is a common device among soldiers to retain their sanity.

Plus, imagine the ambient NPC conversation if it were dead serious all the time. What would they talk about, and more importantly, would you even care what they were talking about?

I have done all three orders, After that I only choose whisperers. The Vigil are just not what I am interested in, their main helper is not what I find interesting or memorable. The Priory I really liked the helper but the overall feeling of the group was not great. The Whisperers I seem to come across a lot in game and while the ‘know the unknowable’ bit is lame they have some neat stuff hidden away.

Personally, I don’t mind the jokes. TBH I consider the entire Charr and Asura races to be complete comic relief along with the ooze king. Charr are just furry versions of Warhammer 40k’s Orks, stupid but their belief in their own creations are the reason why they work.

Charr also remind me of the Cizerack from BattleLords of the 23rd Century RPG, which my particular group excluded from the setting because they were so improbable and badly designed.

Oh my dear God… what have I done! Now all I can think of is…

Norn – Genhumans.
Sylvari – Chatilian.
Charr – Cizerack.
Asura – Mutzachan.

Charr are actually quite intelligent and capable of complex thought. It’s just, how do I put this . . .

When you have the option of overwhelming force to solve a problem . . . and it generally works? You tend to start viewing it as the best answer since it rarely fails.

Also, from what little I read of the spaceborne Orks, that’s really a bad comparison all around.

Reading this conversation, I think of Colin’s article back when when he referenced Quest For Glory. The Quest For Glory games (like all of the Sierra quest games) had a very serious plot, but it wasn’t about to be above making fun of itself.

To me it seems that Tyria is very similar to that as a world, though unlike Sierra, ANet tends to try to avoid making pop culture references in their world. Mind you, my Asura warrior wouldn’t mind taking a couple of classes from FA’s correspondence school!

I can’t speak for the other storylines because I haven’t finished them yet… but I can tell you this: the Order of Whispers storyline is the most non-serious of all the 3 factions (At least from what I’m reading on here)

There’s Tybalt’s antics. Drinking contests with pirates. A mission where you accidentally drug yourself with psychedelics and become a babbling idiot, saying “OOOZES OOZES OOZES” …. Not to mention infiltrating the pirate camp, where you meet a whole host of clowns… Then you’ve got a whole Skrit thing, which wouldn’t be unbearable if the Skrit weren’t a parody race (just like the quaggan) – simply there to make people giggle…. It was just one “gag” after the next, and clearly I didn’t pick the right faction for wanting a serious story.

But you guys are right – the story does get semi-serious up to the point where you begin dealing with Zhaitan… but a huge chunk of my story with Order of Whispers was just one weird event after the next, and getting through a lot of it felt like “work” because of how much I didn’t like the tone and theme of everything.

To be fair, I think it’s just Tybalt that’s a goofball. Doern seems very serious and some of the other field agents you can locate out in the field are also rather serious about their jobs.

I still sort of agree, they don’t feel quite as . . . hmm, mysterious and intriguing as they were back when they came out of nowhere in Nightfall to basically go: “We know who you are, we know what you’re fighting, and we know you are thoroughly screwed unless you listen very closely to what our Master has to say to you.”

Of course, you weren’t on the inside then, and while I was somewhat irked by the levity, it’s almost warranted after the preceding chapter in either charr or human storyline. It also doesn’t last long.

I dunno, part of me realizes I built my human ranger to be Charming/Dignified and he’d probably have some levity. On the other hand, my charr warrior is Dignified/Ferocious so he would absolutely want to dunk Tybalt’s head in the bay telling him to shape up.

. . . that’s why he went Vigil.

Asura are the #1 best thing in the game! It pains me that anyone could think ill of them. What’s next, anti-Quaggan sentiment?

I’ve done most of the personal storylines now. The humans are sadly – not terribly personal. The Charr was interesting (I only did one of those) but I couldn’t ‘connect’ with her. The Norn was – well, better than human, but I haven’t accepted their voices. (though sometimes, she’s good – my daughter’s Norn woman had some great lines later on) I’ve had 2 Sylvari (males only for the voice – he is wonderful) & those are actually really good (especially the shield/night ones)

But the Asura – you almost can’t go wrong with their stories. (dynamics/infinity being THE best, but the valet golem is a close 2nd) Both male & female are wonderful. (I now have 4, 3 of which are 80 – the male Asura is probably my favorite voice actor, though the Sylvari male is pretty close)

Asura have no faults – obviously, this topic is an error in perception.

Tybalt was my favorite, too, but I liked the Priory/Vigil ones (my male Asura both had to be Vigil – they just did) Trahearne – he was ok when you meet him in the Sylvari stories – I liked him ok at first, on my mesmer. But geez, by the end I wanted to hit him, too.

As for Logan, he pains me, but I find him likable. I do spend a lot of time shouting, JENNAH! when he’s around, especially after the CM story mode. And I want Jennah to marry the mustache twirling evil minister guy, just to break up this nauseating non-romance, that has reached almost Twilight levels of irritation. (I can too easily see them in a field of fake flowers, staring at each other, mumbling a bit, & otherwise saying NOTHING)

I loved the grittiness of GW1 too.
GW2 stories are very goofy indeed, game doesn’t take itself seriously and thus fails to involve you into it… the humor isn’t really funny either, the only times GW2 made me laugh was through funny bugs or things I did myself.
Even Orr isn’t really scary, DoA was, Tombs was, FoW/UW were… Orr is just the bottom of a sea with some annoying mobs; the less scary of them are difficult, the scariest (abomination etc) can’t stand a full 100B channel… huh?

Races too…
Charrs were scary back in GW1, now they talk like cavemen.
Asuras used to be know-it-alls, they still are but they look very childish now and less dignified.
Humans were done greatly in GW1, in GW2 they all seem 18 year old kids from their dialogues.
Trahearne… Just… Trahearne.

But I can live with it.

I’m kinda boggled by this, because this didn’t feel like how I saw it at all. The charr don’t talk like cavemen other than the guttural growl they have, they talk like they spare very little nonsense to words. If they talk, they have something to say and it’s as precise as they can get the words to fit. They do not waste time flattering you.

The asura are far from my favorites but they seem . . . exactly as goofy as they were during post Eye of the North material. (The trial you had to sit through . . . ) I don’t like them any more, or any less, I just really want to throttle Zojja and beat her head against Mr. Sparkles.

Not much to say on the humans. They’re more in the background than in GW1 but that was always a given. They know it, too. But listening to small dialogues around the world, two things stand out: there’s only two male voices and they sound alike . . . and they’re generally very grim in outlook if they’re not in a city.

I don’t hate Zojja. It’s just when she opens her judgmental and self-centered little mouth . . . I want to bounce her off a couple things at a tremendously high rate of speed. I mean, other than that I don’t have much of a problem with her.

. . . I miss Vekk.

Tybalt and the Asura are the only good things about the personal storyline. You’d rather have more Trehearne and Logan?

Yes

That’s not to say I love those two but if they can keep Tybalt away I will cling to them like a scared cat.

Oh, fair enough. I have to admit, I get mad at her for blaming Eir. I was hoping at the end, she’d have a psychological insight moment & realize it’s herself she blames. She was too glib there, I thought. Still, it’s actually one my favorite Felicia Day performances. Caithe is the one that annoyed me – she just talks too much & with very little humor. However, in the last Sylvari story I did, I really liked her – she had some humor there.

If you haven’t yet, run citadel of flame story followed by crucible of eternity. CoE is where zoja has her epiphany moment, but it won’t make sense w/o running CoF first.

We’ve done them – I think that’s the one that made me cry. I’m thinking more of the story Arah, though, where she just kind of jokes about it with Eir. But it wasn’t anything that terrible – just I wanted more sit down on couch & talk to therapist stuff. But that’s probably not all that game-ish.

I noticed this without having played GW1. I figured it was in both games and was there to make the casuals feel at home.

It does feel a bit campy at times, probably depends on your race/order though. Compared to the other MMO I played, FFXIV, GW2’s story feels much different in that the silly and the serious aren’t mixed quite was carefully as I feel they could have been.

I haven’t finished my personal story yet, but from when I first met that goofy Noble “friend” and fought alongside Captain Useless (um, Thackery, I mean) in the human storyline, on some level I decided not to take it seriously.

But hey, I kinda like some of the sillier, less serious elements like the Asura NPC dialogue. I find GW2’s stories mildly entertaining, but not really something I find very compelling. I mostly ignore them to be honest. ^^;

As much as love and enjoy GW2, I am disappointed by how… (like the OP said) ‘goofy’ the style is. It is not how it was really advertised, for me anyway.

GW2 looked like it was going to be the first ‘mature’ MMO around, since I could not stand the art style of WoW, or anything by blizzard for that matter. and other games like Tera and Aion just looked over the top with the style.

Certain races like the Quaggan, Hylek and Skrit really bother me they are just outright annoying and somewhat childish… I know there are countless people who like them, but I feel somewhat embarrassed by those races. and now we have quaggan backpacks all over the place too… and people requesting quaggans as a playable race.

Another aspect that I find annoying is the quotes that some of the players come out with… ‘I could outrun a centaur’ springs to mind… and the extremely annoying noises that male Norns yell out, I would have hoped for something more aggressive with male Norns, but instead they make the most kitten noises like ‘GHOOOOOOL’. Battles just don’t sound like battles at all I find. it’s just the exchange of daft quotes over and over.

But none the less. I do enjoy playing this game, it is fun and it is put together really well, and I’m hooked…

I just hope that TES:O sticks to it’s style and doesn’t go down the same path all other MMOs go down… I just want an MMO where I don’t feel like I’m about to be mugged by the Teletubbies at any given moment.

I blame the nerd asuras. If more behaved like Vekk, they would be great.
Quaggans are to blame as well.

I was expecting a more adult theme overall as well, or at least something as dark as GW1 felt at times. That game really only felt cheesy during the holidays…as it should be imo.

What I got was a cutesy, hand-holding, Disney world that is obviously catering to a new, younger audience. Stuffed-Quaggan backpacks, Princess doll mini’s, a Rainbow&Unicorn shooting bow…?

We’re not in Tyria anymore, Toto.

Had I known the game was going to be so teensy, I probably wouldn’t have bought it.

- People like quaagans. They joke about them. They’re an unofficial mascot of the game. That’s why you got the backpacks. Blame the players. In contrast, GW1 had “chibi Gwen”. It also had warriors in pink-dyed gladiator armor which resembled a leather bra and skirt. If they wore anything at all.

- One item shoots rainbow unicorns, and that breaks the game? In comparison, there are how many items with a grim appearance? Or a tech one? Does the existence of “Super Hyperbeam Alpha” mean I should be complaining the game is too sci-fi? How about Final Rest and Twilight meaning the game is too dark and gritty?

- The princess dolls were part of Wintersday along with toy soldiers, plush gryphons, miniature golems, and toy centaurs. In comparison, over in GW1 we had Kringle wanting you to rescue Rudolph from the Grintch, er Grentch. We had Dwayna and Grenth treating the population of two cities like little kids at an assembly “line up and let’s see who has the most votes!”.

Gwen was too emo, everyone knows that. And you will always get peeps that wear pink on heavy armor. Same with the “scantily clad” element.

The game is too sci-fi only because it’s an oxymoron existence. Yaks still pulling wooden carts around yet there’s a giant laser attached to a floating metal zeppelin…makes no sense. Final Rest and Twilight are just cool to look at, they aren’t dark and gritty.

I don’t know the “assembly line” thing you mentioned, I always did the snowball pvp during Wintersday.

Read the short story here right at the beginning(Nolani Academy…) and tell me it’s not more serious and gritty:

You’re thinking of the wrong Gwen. You really are. But that’s okay. I’m here to help.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/File:Gwen_(Prophecies).jpg

This is Gwen. She was a little girl who waited outside the gates of the first city in Prophecies and if you talked to her she would tag along and chatter nonstop until you left the area. Part of the Searing cinematic was her looking up before “crap happened”, and the next you saw of her was a “tattered girl’s cape” washing up somewhere in Kryta. Or a “Broken flute” spawning in the ruins of Ascalon.

And people adored this little girl.

Nope, they’re cool to look at but then, I find Moonshine to also be cool to look at.

Your ignorance of what went on doesn’t make a difference to how goofy it was. Look up the Wintersday Finale. Heck, look up ninety percent of holiday quests. “The Knights who Say Nian”. Please tell me there is one holiday’s worth of events which is entirely not goofy.

Talk with some people about what happened to Malomedes. Look at the first thing that happens for a charr player character. Listen to what happened to Destiny’s Edge to make them break up. Read the backstory of Ebonhawke . . . heck, take Ebonhawke in and of itself.
