Winterday Feedback [merged]
Currently the Bell Choir daily says “participate” which is incorrect. I have “participated” in many Bell Choir events but never completed one song. I realize that people don’t understand how some people can fail to complete even the very first song but for some reason I have never done it. (Been playing since Beta.). Idk if it is my connection or what but I follow the instructions and it still never works for me.
Yes, I have tried this year like every year hoping that something has been changed so I can do it. And in previous years I had a different computer and a different ISP.
Suffice it to say that requiring either the Bell Choir or the JP means I will not complete any Festival dailies.
Try hitting the notes later. A lot of people who have problems are simple hitting too early. You want to hit them as they get to the very inside blue circle, just as they disappear.
Yea, I’ve tried waiting until they are fully within the blue at my feet but it still doesn’t work. And I don’t want this to turn in to a tutorial on the Bell Choir – that isn’t the point. Thanks though.
I just heard in map chat that when you stay within the area of the bell choir for all 6 songs (or until the end of the event) you get credited for participation, even without staying on one of the platforms.
Very possible. Today I entered that area while the last song was being played. Was unable to join in so I waited by the snowman. I got credit and then was kicked to Divinities Reach.
This community is getting so spoiled that I won’t be surprised if threads are to come in the future where people would ask to get all the dailies/LS completion/event completion etc. just by skipping the content and clicking on ‘’skip to the rewards’’. Because apparently some do believe that the content is so hard and that their perfered way of playing the game is to skip everything and yet get everything in the game.
I have never played an MMO that gives you half the options that GW2 offers and I have played most of the nitch titles out there.
I searched for other posts but didn’t find any and honestly I’m very surprised more people aren’t complaining. Why was this made into an activity? It has completely ruined it for me. This was one of my favorite things to do last year with guildies. It was just really fun all being in teamspeak together and talking about where we need more buildings and which dolyak’s needed health, ect. But now, not only can I not play with my friends, I can’t even find a full instance that people aren’t being idiots in. I just don’t understand why this change was made at all..it would be great to hear the reasoning behind it because right now it just seems like you guys ruined an awesome instance.
Here is the discussion you are looking for.

First, how rude. Second, I am talking about the lack of enough choices in the Festival Dailies. I never asked to complete anything more easily.
I have a problem with bell chior at first.
The trick is to hit the button after the tone “get into the circle”.
I was always hitting early before so can’t do it. After I learn the trick it is fairly easy to at least complete 1 song.

Right, you just want more easy options to avoid that hard options.
I can totally see the difference there.
Why is the bell choir such a chore, that’s my question. You need to complete a single song a day. Just one.
I’m not saying that the jumping puzzle is easy, but the bell choir? Should take you about ten minutes. Everything else is relatively easy.
Why should there not be one semi-diffucult thing. It’s not like you have to complete the entire series of songs to get credit for the daily.
It really isn’t that hard.
The JP you get a “complete” for just standing at the start till the match is up. Not sure if that’s intended or not though.
Personally I have a big problem with being rewarded a toy mini I bought in 2012 with gems. So, basically I get a slap in the face for having supported the game in the past by spending real money. Very disappointing. Please make the reward for people that already have all toy minis exchangeable for the new rebreather or the magnanimous bell.
Anet needs to realize that these type of actions impact gem purchases negatively in the long run. Why buy anything from the store if we might be getting it for free later down the line.

you mean you can get the daily by just standing at the entrance?( or at least keep failing till the time is up?)
I suppose the OP shouldn’t complain then.

For me it’s even later. If i hit them eaxctly when they touch the circle, i am too early. I need to let them “stay” at the inner circle for half a second. It’d not very intuitive, and actually took me several days before i found this out (fortunately, the “mash keys at random” method did work half of the time ;P).
Also, you (OP, not Vayne) can concentrate on only some notes (for example, only keys 1,2,3,4) and ignore the rest. If you manage to keep hitting them right most of the time, you should be able to get to the end without much problem.

People have short memories and most have a “have to have it now” mentality. So, I disagree with your assessment that it will affect gem sales in any significant way.
That seems to be their mindset across the board, not just with the festival dailies. You can play the way you want, as long as it is within the limits they are putting on you (as in play how they think you should.
What kind of argument even is this? Are you suggesting there should be no limits? That you can do literally anything you want at any time? Obviously there are going to be boundaries outside of which you cannot operate, that’s just how reality works, so complaining about the existence of those boundaries is utter nonsense.
Furthermore, if you choose to interpret “encourage” as “force” that says a lot about your approach to the world. Have you ever heard the term “external locus of control?” You might want to look into it.
This one time I bought a TV for $800, and then 2 years later I saw it was on sale for $200. WTF NEVER GOING TO BESTBUY AGAIN!

Your argument holds no water. I’m free to choose what TV I buy, whereas I’m having a useless reward I can’t sell or trade forced upon me.

Do you really not understand the issue? It isn’t remotely the same as your example. This is a REWARD for a festival. I hadn’t remembered that the mini was previously available in the store, but now that I am reminded, the OP is completely correct. It is a terrible idea to give something that people might have purchased already in the store as a reward. So essentially anyone who supported Anet by purchasing this item already gets nothing for completing the Festival. That IS a slap in the face. Nice one Anet.

Are festivals really supposed to provide content to potentially take up the entire time they’re available? I think your expectations are too high there.
Obviously there’s the perennial problem that you can’t join activities with friends, and wintersday does have more activities than any other festival. That complaint is fair enough.
Again, please actually read my post. I never said I wanted a 2 week long event which keeps me busy 24/7. I did however say that the content lasts like 3 days at max if you play casually. There should be something inbetween – Even if it’s just pretty’ing up all the cities so you can run around and take screenshots.
It is similar to the living story patches nowadays, those take about 1 or 2 days to complete if it’s just story. The rest of the 2 week scedule? You guessed it, grinding or other repetetive tasks – This is not fun. I played SMT:IO which had no endgame after ~lvl40 (while going up to 97, which was ridiculous to reach) whatsoever except for grinding expertise and levels to get better demons/skills – I’m fed up with games defining endcontent solely as “grind a lot so you get something rare”.
I have hope for the “raids” they plan, given that it could include 2 or more parties having to work together, more and bigger strategies and so on – But the question is: When will we get that? And do we only get grinding RNG stuff in the meantime?
I love GW2 to pieces – Everything from the artstyle to the class-definition with the trait system and so on is absolutley awsome. But what they do now is what many games did before – And they all ended the same way: People left and eventually the game was left in the dust. Ragnarök, Aion, Rift, SMT:IO, maybe even ArchAge. They had potential, but they all decided to put emphasis on stuff that was proven to be not-optimal before. Why? Why would you do that to your game? I know it’s hard to listen to many people at once and you can’t satisfy all – But not listening at all is generally the worse decision.
That is why I opened that topic: To give feedback what I don’t like about wintersday and to give people the possibility to do so aswell. This should not be a discussion who’s right – You usually can’t pinpoint that.
This one time I bought a TV for $800, and then 2 years later I saw it was on sale for $200. WTF NEVER GOING TO BESTBUY AGAIN!

So choose the 100 gifts instead?
I mean, you get a choice of which mini you get, and I’m guessing most people didn’t buy all of them 2 years ago. Even if you did though, you can choose the 100 gifts instead. You bought the minis because you deemed them an appropriate value for you 2 years ago.
(edited by Subdue.5479)
Back in 2012 when we had left over cogs/stuffing etc, everyone expected to be able to continue to collect the set over the course of a few wintersdays. You must have known as well as everyone else the likelihood of those minis being available in subsequent years, but chose to buy them rather than wait.
These are the exact same mini’s that could be forged during 2012, and were awarded as the meta in 2013 and now in 2014. They have in fact been part of every GW2 wintersday reward since GW2 began, and will no doubt continue to be rewarded in 2015 and beyond.

I bought or created all the mini rewards in the year(s) past. This year, I selected the 100 gifts and got the Ho-Ho-Tron. And, I’m going to guess quite a few people bought the past minis or created them when possible.
Rome is not burning. It’s an electronic image that doesn’t even exist. You spent money on that last year or so, and now are kittened that one of those items can be a reward this year?
Please put it into perspective.
This is a chance for those people, who didn’t play the game then, to now get those minis. If you feel so cheated, don’t buy any further minis and hope they be rewarded in the years to come if you feel this is such an injustice.

Who said Rome was burning? That’s a little over-dramatic. The fact is that a reward for completing a festival should be something new, not something that players might already have. What means those players get no reward.
And for players who previously gave Anet money for the reward, its even worse. Of course its actually a poor business decision to essentially say “don’t buy items from the store because we give away store items as festival rewards.”
I really need to stop reading these forums.

…You realize it was available as a reward the year he bought it too, right? There was no reason to believe it would never be available as a reward again.
Um… You could buy them every year, you could also EARN them every year… I don’t see how any rational human being would’ve thought “I bought them this year, so even though they’ve been given out for free the last 2 years they won’t be next year.”

And I’m overly dramatic? You can get 100 gifts. And I got Ho-Ho-Tron for free. And the new endless bell. Again, for free. Not to mention all the toy skins and tons and tons of snowflakes to sell on the Trading Post.
For free.
Is that also a slap in the face? But, by all means, continue to call me overly-dramatic. I love irony.

We’re talking about the continuous change to the game to remove choice and direct play. Festival dailies used to have more choices, now they have less. Why?
Really festival daily isn’t that hard. If you cannot manage to complete either the JP or 1 song on bell choir then you don’t deserve the rewards. You have to accept that you are not skilled enough and either try and improve or give up and not get that laurel.
Almost every other game in existence withholds certain rewards if you cannot complete certain content and IDK why people expect guild wars 2 to be any different.
Make five snowman – easy
Throw snowballs 3 times at a player – easy
Open four gifts – easy
Donate anything – easy
Jump puzzle and choir? – OMG SO UNFAIR!

So people are supposed to choose 100 gifts? I got hundreds of gifts just playing the festival events and have yet to get anything good from them. Why should I choose 100 gifts as my end reward?
You got Ho-Ho-Tron and the endless bell “for free” how? As drops? You realize that not everyone gets good drops, right? Did you read the thread from Halloween where people opened thousands and thousands of bags without getting anything good? I was one. The best thing I got from Halloween was an endless tonic. Yay. But I’m supposed to choose presents huh?
I’m starting to see a trend with you. Yes, you are supposed to choose the 100 gifts if you have all the minis. Why in the world would you choose the mini if you already have it?
Why wouldn’t you choose the hundred gifts?
I didn’t get squat from the Halloween bags either. But you don’t see me bemoaning that fact on these forums do you?
I’ll do you one better. I bought Warhammer Online, City of Heroes, and Hellgate. Collector’s Editions, my friend. And guess what? They are now dead games. Offline. No longer exist.
Should I get my money back?
How about this? I bought Star Trek Online, Age of Conan, and Star Wars the Old Republic, when they were subscription games. Paid a subscription too. And now they’re free to play.
Should they refund me? It is a slap in the face to me now? Because I paid top dollar for something that’s now free to download and play?
That’s your and the OP’s argument. And it doesn’t cut it in the real world. We call that a too bad, so sad, suck it up situation.
Which I suggest you do.
(edited by Ardenwolfe.8590)
Yes, you are supposed to choose the 100 gifts if you have all the minis. Why in the world would you choose the mini if you already have it?
Exactly. By re-using items that were previously available they are leaving players who are either long-term players (so they might have got the item already) or paying customers with a crappy choice for what is supposed to be a reward. Not a good way to say thank you to either group.
Why are all of you rallying around festival rewards as being proper “challenging content”? lol…
Where were most of you in the threads about the game in general being too easy/casual? A good number of you are defending these dailies simply because it’s the status quo.
OP is simply pointing out that there isn’t much precedent based on the history of this game. I would personally welcome such a shift, but I realize I am probably not the target audience, and I don’t believe a festival daily is the most appropriate place to begin such a shift.

The thing is, it’s not really lol. I mean the choir bell daily can be done with just one finger. Is easy.

Thank you Dave for being a reasonable forum poster. Some people apparently don’t have enough reading comprehension to recognize that I stated that the Festival Dailies were negatively changed for me. I have been playing since Beta and have never been able to complete the Bell Choir activity, so it is not “easy”. I play the rest of the game, even doing vistas that have jumping in order to get map completions, so I’m not completely [word that begins with g that you might use for a person with a broken leg]. And I understand the mechanic.
As for jumping puzzles, I really do not enjoy them. And since this is a game I’m not sure why I should do something I don’t enjoy. With the previous festival dailies you had enough choice that you could do things you enjoy and still complete the dailies. Now that is not true for me.
Really? That’s all you got out of that? Nothing about all the free items. Nothing about the free content. Nothing about the seasonals. All this free.
Nothing about paying for games that no longer exist? Nothing about paying a subscription for games that are now free to play? Nothing about any of that?
Instead, you want to focus on a digital item, that doesn’t exist, that you paid or created one or two years ago, as being unfair to you because now new people who didn’t have the opportunity to get them, can now earn one of them, for free by completing the achievement, because as a long-term player, you are not getting something shiny and new too? And that’s unfair.
That’s your argument?
Are you absolutely sure you want to defend that position?
(edited by Ardenwolfe.8590)
Your argument holds no water. I’m free to choose what TV I buy, whereas I’m having a useless reward I can’t sell or trade forced upon me.
- I can only imagine the horror of having a reward forced upon you.
So anet made the mistake and didn’t contact the op to make sure their list of six daily achievements met his playing capabilities.
So what we need here is a fifth daily that is as trivial as the others. So no snowball mayhem….could drink five festival tonics, but we already have a copper spent on ho-ho-tron, so that’s too much……hmmm…..
Oh I know! Just visit the holiday vendor! Just like the old laurel vendor achievement! There! Then everyone can feel like that really accomplished something…
Really? That’s all you got out of that? Nothing about all the free items. Nothing about the free content. Nothing about the seasonals. All this free.

You should choose the 100 gifts as your end reward because you already have all the minis. That’s.. kind of a no-brainer. What good does a duplicate mini do you now that they’re in the wardrobe?
I mean, we can’t force you to take 100 gifts over a duplicate mini that serves you absolutely no purpose but to take up an inventory slot until you click to delete it. I just personally can’t see why you wouldn’t take the obvious choice.
None of the rest of your argument pertained to the discussion at hand so I ignored it.
Are you familiar with the term: Confirmation bias? You should look it up.

Some of these events require significant keyboard proficiency to complete, and for players who aren’t able to use a keyboard well enough to quickly jump from platform to platform or quickly press the correct number at the right time, there’s little chance of them completing 11 of the provided events.
ALL of these events should be based on participation with a reasonable level of persistence, WIN or LOSE. I’ve played through 30 rounds of Snowball Mayhem only to learn that repeat events do not count and because of this, I’m stuck at 10 completions. I’m terrible at PvP, but it didn’t matter because each time a team won, it counted for everyone. On the other hand it took over an hour to correctly chime 13 bells for those choir events. I imagine that I would eventually reach the required total, but would the prize justify the effort when compared to someone who’s able to do the same event within several minutes?
You claim to have made this game friendly to new and veteran players so that they can play together and benefit. Seems like your special events were made to separate the two.
No joy in Mudville.

You can play together with the “veterans,” and you still get gifts for each completion. You’re able to grind it out if you’re not good at it, but have an easier time if you are good at it.
I’m not seeing where the issue is here. If you want to take skill out of the equation altogether, why not just go play Sims instead?
Game play as a whole involves being able to use a keyboard and a mouse. Some events in this game do require a bit of skill or proficiency. There is nothing wrong with that. Not all events, rewards or activities are meant for everyone to face roll through.

I completely agree that persistence should count as well as skill. Not everyone is going to have the same video game skills and its not like GW2 has intense gameplay in general. “Regular” GW2 gameplay (openworld PvE) is generally pretty easy to play so suddenly being faced with more challenging gameplay in a Festival which is supposed to be for fun can be very disappointing.

I didn’t say to take skill out altogether. There’s a reason why these games are designed where skilled players can help lesser skilled players. That’s not the case with some of these events. I can use a keyboard an mouse well enough to play the actual game, but not Tap Tap Revenge or Super Mario Bros. At least with Toypocalypse, a player can enlist skilled help. Too bad that event doesn’t count either. Always some 12yr old offering alternate game suggestions.

So…..like little league baseball?
“Its OK kids, even if you lost to a more skilled team, you still get a shiney trophy to take home saying ‘I tried!’ So you don’t get low self-esteem and feel bad”.

Sounds pretty accurate so far.
