Would you pay a subscription to play GW2?
Based on the current available content and speediness of fixes, I wouldn’t pay a sub.
Given the topic title, let’s just post our opinions for show and leave out the details as it often leads to a degeneration of quibbling.
Gw2 broke its maneifesto and feels 2/3s done.
People keep in mind this game was DELAYED TWICE. It was suppoed to release back in 09 then 10 then 11 and finally released in 12.
If there were so many issues why not hold it back a year? And the voice acting really? Anyone in 10 could’ve told you to redue everything.
The manifesto was broken because GW2 attracted too many different kinds of players that thought they could find something their favorite mmorpg has (such as grind, “endgame”, etc.). Also, for me, the manifesto wasn’t broken because I feel Anet delivered.
But if they love grind so much just return to their old mmo.
If they hate using strategy fine, just return then. In GW1 you really needed to think, in this game that is also true but its been dumbed down ALOT.
See that’s the problem. Gamers always want something “new” but when it’s delivered some sort of nostalgia hits them in the head and they want to do old stuff over and over again. I’d tell them to go back where they came from too, but it’s not easy as just saying it. The game then loses population, money, popularity and all that good stuff. So Anet tries to please everyone.
Not a chance! It’s far too broken.
But you still post on the forums to complain? Cute.
Oh that’s right, only fanboys allowed here right?

Really if you enjoy WoW’s gear grind by all means return to it. Don’t try and force this game down the same boring path.
With all the people complaining about being lied to and disrespected, you’d think they’d be gone by now.
It’s a tough question. I want to say no because there’s no gated gear grind to artificially lengthen your play time. And then I realized how silly it is to pay to have your content be gated.
Would you pay for Diablo if it had a subscription? Or TF2? Or CoD? Or Skyrim? The question is, why do you even ask? Oh sorry, silly me, I know the answer, you just want to discredit the game.
Anet’s double backing on their promises has already put me boarder line ready to stop playing. If they demand that I pay to play a game with obvious unbalanced professions that warps PvP… I would walk….

+1 on this point. I wouldn’t pay to play an solo RPG.
Nope, subscription is the reason I quit other MMOs before. I have no problem paying for the box or for expansions, even if the price is higher than usual, I am also ok with the idea of buying some gems, but no monthly fees.
I would not play it on a subscription basis because I cannot afford to. I often will leave the game for a week or longer, or just log in to poke at some fun timewasting between other things.
I don’t want to pay for that, I could find some other game to play, Heck, I’d probably go right back to playing Monster Hunter. The RNG in that game is considerably more unfair but I always found it fun to slap around dragons with a sword the size of a dinner table.
If they fixed the game to support their original design goals and fix the ridiculas drop rate/DR issues then i might. The broken mess we have now though no I would not be willing to spend money monthly on this.
And this isnt even really because i like the original design goals better than what we currently have its about trust, i dont pay monthly fee’s to devs that cant be trusted that would just be stupid.
The issues with GW2 is they had all this marketing when it was in development about how this game was going to be gamebreaking have no grind, appeal to MMO players and non MMO players etc. You all know what im talking about with what was released while this game was in development and how much that differs from what we have now. But then since launch have done literally nothing to support that original plan and everything to convert it to another WoW clone, while not adressing why this is being done or why they were so dishonest in the original marketing if this was their plan all along. I mean there is nothing wrong with making another mainstream MMO clone if thats what you want to do just be honest about it.
Depending on if I had a good group to play with. I thoroughly enjoy playing the game an the standard $10-15 a month wouldn’t bother me. I will admit if it was required at the start I highly doubt I would have started playing.
Also I don’t see what people are complaining about with certain dev distrust or them lying to you. Sure some stuff ended up a bit more meh than I had hoped but overall still pleasant. Grind is pretty minimal, unless you are going after certain objects, but they had originally said some items with the best looks will be a grind. Ascended gear doesn’t bother me yet either as its only a small increase and still pretty attainable via just playing the game. Granted what happens in the future with it could change that.

If it was i sub-based game i would have voted with my walled and stayed:>
But Guild Wars 2 is a milestone in mmo gendre in equal part for it’s revolutionary approach to gameplay and revolutionary approach to payment. In time and age where games are shorter and shorter costing more and more, GW2 is the unmovable mountain that just stand in the way of this “progress” and does us all players a favor.
Because of that i would not agree to it being P2P. It’s comparable to what Final Fantasy 7 did for console asian rpgs – it opened the floodgates to the whole gendre to the west., as GW2 is now opening floodgates to true progression of the gendre both gameplay and payment model wise.
But there are still gems to get to thank arena.net for the awesome job:)
Because GW2 was obviously the first Buy to play game and the first game to have action combat!……oh wait
Because Final Fantasy VII was first Jrpg ever released to the west…oh wait….
It’s not the first that matters, it’s the first to do it right on a grand scale that matters.
And thing is times are changing and standing an honest business model ground on the downhill trip of P2W “free mmos”, or B2P+subs (Wow) or P2P+Cash Shop(Blade and Soul) with a such a great title is something to be considered praise worthy and taking a stand in those times. And for that i’m grateful to Arena.net.
i think a lot of times people are overreacting at the cost of paying a monthly subscription for an MMO. Folks pay 15 dollars for a meal at their nearest restaurant or grab that crappy Mcdonlads value meal they shouldnt be eating for 7.99 or whatever i is. but complain about a $15 subscription. If you eliminate the unecessities and bad habits then $15 is really nothing. This is PER MONTH. People are ordering pizza every weekend or whatever and spend much more on a weekend for food/fun than a subscription cost
Given that you’ve likely heard the same argument about not playing a p2p game before since it’s so common to hear you might want to consider it’s not about the cost but the psychological impact the time limit has. Time limits send people into a frenzy and that prevents most people from taking their time and enjoying it because they are stuck in a “need to make the most of it” mind frame.
No, the only reason I play this game because it is free.
-Too many unfixed bugs
-All medium armor are coats
-No basic emotes or RP friendly content
As soon as I find something better, I will move on…
GW2 was never supposed to be a subscription model. There’s just no comparison (in fact, I feel cheated by any game in the world that charges a subscription fee; have never paid for such a game, and never will.)
Note that I am not saying it is wrong for YOU to play a subscription game monthly fee, but I feel it’s an unnecessary fee; especially since we have other real-life monthly fees everywhere else, and I would probably rather pay a similar sum to a gym (for instance) instead. If you are well-off, you can afford everything, of course, and that’s OK too, but I always feel subscritions game don’t guarantee any “better” game quality than free to play or pay to play games-I consider it a lie that developers need these big monthly fees to advance the game, upkeep their servers, etc., so to me it’s a big money-grab and insult to their playerbase, because of the dishonesty.
I would never ever pay a sub fee for a game – any game. Ever.

Really?
Have you watched it lately?
Boss spawning 10 minutes later not ok…..meanwhile that’s exactly what champion events do in gw2, “the game doesn’t care that I’m there”
Villagers don’t remember anything, let alone that I (and dozens of others, every 10 minutes that day) saved them. There’s no “in a very permanent way” since everything just resets and repeats. Nothing Ree say’s in the manifesto is true to the game that was delivered.
Excellent questions.
If this game was subscription based, would you be willing to pay to play this game monthly? Why or why not?
If it can save ANet from being restricted in their vision by some money guy who don’t have a clue in gamedesign, forcing them to either monetize a game feature with gems, either impose a bad gamedesign in order to “grow their audience because the minimum revenue growth was not secured enough” ….
Then yes, totally, I would pay a sub.
Do you think GW2 would have flopped if it was launched as a subscription game?
And that’s where I understand the cash shop decision : the competition was too strong at the time it was released, F2P was becoming legion, and mmo gamers were in general fed up with current mmo scene, most finding any new game not worth a sub.
They just didn’t have the choice.
Now the tricky thing is that it would be a super hard time to make a B2P game become a sub based game, when all the other MMOs are taking the opposite stance.
edit : reading the replies now, and it shocks me how people in general can’t see the implications of a cash shop based business model … the only thing they see is their wallet’s profit :/

I’m getting mine in the next 5 days…
and I am a horrible player… so what does that say?
Nope. I don’t put a lot of money into the game, but i do purchase gems occasionally through currency exchange which keeps Anet earning money. I don’t see myself paying any subscription for such a buggy game. Lag and culling has become a pain in the butt and class bugs are still ridiculous. I don’t see myself going anywhere though. Love running around the beautiful world that’s been created

Nothing that’s relevant? Point is it’s still gated and it still punishes those with alts (as it’s another 30 days for each) or anyone that plays more than 1 build.
Believe it or not, it doesnt matter, cause for me i would even pay $20-30 sub fee if this game is heading the right way.
I’ve been playing subs mmos for ages and still is now. So im very comfortable with subs kinda model.
But since Lost Shore patch, this game is heading the wrong way and it will keep going that way trust me. No hope & so nope, not a cent more from me. Sorry.
So much negativity in this thread, its so heart warming~! Everyone comparing/constrasting if this was a sub-fee as the games current state is ridiculous.
If Gw2 was a sub-fee game, this game would be COMPLETELY different. Half the things you see are innovations based around helping each other and many other MMOs don’t do such a thing. So, the answer to the OP is, I don’t know as the game currently was clearly made to be B2P and if it were P2P would be a complete different MMO all together to keep you going with a carrot on a stick.
I’m still loving the game just as much as day 1 and the content has been steady on almost month by month basis. What else can I ask for? The games been more than worth it for me and can’t wait for this months content release~!
No I would not pay a monthly fee for an MMO anymore. Which one is irrelevant. But yes it also works for GW2 due to this stance. I payed the monthly fees before for mmo’s … en I stopped all of them in the end because of that.
I have played none subscription MMO’s, bought stuff for them… stopped them, came back sometimes quite a while later… and bought new stuff with renewed interest (usually an expansion).
I love the fact that I don’t feel “forced” to “play or else feeling i’m throwing money away”. That i feel when I have payed to be able to play and pay that regardless of life/mood allows me to play or not. And the feeling that when I am not paying anymore all I done will be rendered pointless as it is out of reach I dislike strongly too. And discourages trying out payed MMO’s anymore or picking them back up.
Non fee MMO’s see me coming back time and time again, while payed ones get their door closed on them forever once I decide to leave. I don’t like to have to pay again to see if I have to catch up, feeling rushed there and in the end have payed andd never reached that catch up goal anyway (I am a relative slowly progressing casual player and prefer to be that.) Subscription MMO’s tend to come with this gear race, and thus catch up. As that’s ment to keep you invested. Though after a break it’s partly that which prevents me getting invested again.
I much rather pay for extra content and such, after owning the base of the game. So expansions, fun store things (non obligated, though I have no problem with the stuff giving a little edge in some cases, as long as it’s little).

If Guild Wars 2 were to have a monthly subscription fee, my dad would tell me right away to stop playing because he refuses to pay monthly for a game I want to play.
8/9 Professions, Asura Guardian main.
People play either version of Guild Wars because all ya have to buy is the installation disc. I have tried subscription games and it is a total waste of money. Turbine overcharges for what ya need in their games. I am very glad that ya can use in game gold to get gems. Gold is easy to make if run the Exploreables daily. What ya do not need to fund your characters, it is your choice to turn it into gems. I applaude Arenanet for doing this. Yes, there are somethings that could use improving will agree on that. If they went to a subscription but still allowed EXISTING players to be free is the only way I would keep playing. Then again they will not do that because they know they will lose their player base.

Yes I wound pay a sub
No. It was one of the main reasons for choosing this game that there was no monthly fee.
(It is enough that I had to buy a computer that I pay 40€/month to play this game.)
No,
I could not take a subscription with the income that I can win …
It is already just to pay my family has to eat and pay electricity, gas, water and taxes.
In France there is a little sore subdivides, especially at my age.
So no, I can not follow a subscription.
If they got rid of the kitten DR system and allowed me to feel rewarded for my playtime, I would gladly pay a monthly sub.. atm, no I would not.
Given Anet have stated they don’t intend, nor now see much evidence for, DR affecting normal players, how come you feel it affects you so hard?
no. Their model is what attracted me here…
I would pay a sub, though I don’t know would I have enough money to play every month..
No, and after seeing ArenaNet making it work for GW2, I’m not touching another MMO who asks me for a monthly sub, ever again.

No, I wouldn’t pay a subscription fee to play any game.
Short answer: No.
Long answer: No no no.
Notice how many “No way, I never pay!” players there is?
Now, if this was a sub game going f2p (think swtor as example), these are all the players you don’t want and are worried about getting! (Freeloaders and lowlifes – I’m only quoting!). Now, add to that the replies like “I only pay for xbox club” etc. and you get a awesome picture of what is wrong with MMOs and (imo) this game.
We’ve went from older nerds to spolit console kiddies and dregs of humanity.
Doooooomed!
We’ve been awake since March 2007! Please help!
“GW2 the game with more rolls than roles!”
NO, because the game is build with a buy to play model in mind.
A company deserve a lot of money and support only when they make fun games, atm this game is fun but lack longevity because end game and fun content are missing (pve and WvW are very redundant).
I’m waiting next big WvW expansion, and hope they discard the idea of gear and tier grind.
Stupid question really, because I’m sure Anet already understands this, but I’ll play along anyway.
Hello, NO!
Based on the fun factor I perceived during the early levels of the game I would most likely have paid a sub fee. But if I’d been paying a sub fee I’d have cancelled by now. The mess that was Orr, the Trashing of the Manifesto, the sheer unrelenting stinginess in regard to the loot – any one of those might have been the final straw for a sub fee.
But I would have come back when the game inevitably went F2P! ;-)
I wanted to reply to this question because i’ve been changed.
Before GW2, I wouldn’t play an MMO unless it was subscription, I didn’t feel a free game could be what I wanted.
Enter GW2, which is a game that I love and would probably have paid a subscription for at the time, I feel it’s as worth a sub as any other game out there at the moment.
But since I’ve been playing GW2 virtually for free I can’t see myself going back to subscription model. Don’t get me wrong I probably pay about the same for this as I have done any other game and I’m happy to, but now I’ve played this model I think it fits me better. I can choose what I want to pay.

No, I wouldn’t.
And I think that the only thing that keeps people paying for WoW or Eve is that they are tied up to those games communities (so your actually paying to meet your friends and that’s worth the sub). Gw2 would be long dead before it could tie people to itself (like all other MMO’s).
Nope, wouldnt have bothered with the free month even. The sub fee system is a dinosaur in the MMO genre IMO. It’s an outdated tool from the age when hosting servers for games were expensive. But nowdays servers and bandwidth is dirt cheap.
Some guy back when I played WoW had done some research, the server cost could barely be noticed on Blizzards annual. That was a few years ago.
Safe to say I will probably never pay a sub fee MMO again. Did some calculating right after quitting ToR, adding up the sub costs for the MMOs I’ve played and it came out at a total of something like $1800 over the last 10 years, not counting server x-fers, the games and their expansions and so on, just the pure sub fee.
With the ups and down on the dollar market, the sum in Swedish kronor would be something like 15000sek just on sub fees. The dollar has ranged from 1:10 down to 1:6 over the last 10 years.
I would have paid a sub to play Guild Wars. I definitely wouldn’t pay to play GW2. Not since they trashed the manifesto.
I would, but I vastly prefer the buy-to-play model now and I hope more games adopt it. As long as it’s done well, I think it’s the perfect compromise.
If this game was subscription based, would you be willing to pay to play this game monthly? Why or why not?
Do you think GW2 would have flopped if it was launched as a subscription game?
This game isn’t worth a subscription. The amount of bugs/glitches/exploits is astounding. No, I wouldn’t have even thought about this game if it has a sub.
Yes, it would have flopped by now if it had a sub. You cannot have the terrible service this game has and release broken content after broken content. Look at the more recent games to do that…they are all free to play now.
nope. while its really been fun for the couple of months, i think i’m bored of this game already! the environment ,the everything.. just doesn’t seem that fresh anymore.. feels kinda stale.. i’ve seen all the content by now. content seems lacking for p2p game.
