I’m actually shocked you went this far to hide your blunder. Would it not have been easier to say “oops, we made a mistake” or simply explain why you felt this was the best course of action.

Q: Do I have to own Guild Wars 2 to play the expansion?
A: Yes, but Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns includes the Guild Wars 2 core game.

This is not what your FAQ’s read a couple days ago, I mean one needs to ask, is this even legal ?

Nothing is wrong with that. Kudos for Anet for keeping it classy. They are doing new players a generous favor.

It is anything but classy, giving the new players a gift is all fine and good but this is blatantly trying to cover up their previous FAQ’s that stated you need the base game to be able to play, which suggested that people needed to buy it before hand, which SEVERAL people did as per Anets answer.

You and I have a very different definition of classy.

I’m pretty sure that it is. They can say that they later decided to add in GW2 free with HoT, and changed the FAQ to reflect that.

And for all we know, it WAS a last minute decision to do so.

I’m not saying that I like it, but it’s nothing to waste a lawyer’s time over.

I wouldn’t say he/she is hating, they took the easy way out, they were not upfront with their customers, and it now makes all those sales look shady.

If you hit someone with your car and its an accident, you stick around explain what happened, you don’t push them into a ditch and cover them with twigs and then try to play the accident card once your caught followed by offering to pay the hospital bill.

Wait… keeping a FAQ current is now evil?

That they decided to make the base game a pack-in does leave them with having to deal with customers who acted based on the old info up to a point (because we don’t know WHEN they decided they’d throw in) but keeping the FAQ current with public information is something to be encouraged, not scorned…

You can choose to twist it however you like, people were told they needed the base game, they purchased the base game, Anet took the money, change the xpac to include the base game and then changed the FAQ’s to say the base game will be included. Had they not taken the money, or announced that the base would be available with the xpac then changing the FAQ’s would have been fine. People have bought the game because of those FAQ’s and put time into it, do they plan on compensating their time and progression now on top of the base refund ?

They are a company and should be held to the same standards as every other company, this wouldn’t fly with any other company.

The bottom line of it is, mistakes can be made by people, companies, anyone. Maybe the left hand didn’t tell the right hand what the plan was, it happens but, it is the way you handle the problem after the fact. From what I and so many other can see they are not handling it at all, they are trying to hide it like children.

No. The blind outrage has missed the point. The expectation that ArenaNet can see through time with perfect clarity misses the point (and is pretty dang laughable considering they still don’t known when they’re going to release but people act like they had this all planned out from the outset…). That people are ignoring that ArenaNet has expressed a desire to make things right for people who bought the game recently misses the point.

Asking people to focus on the problem and not get wrapped around the axel that the FAQ stayed current with released information is most definitively NOT missing the point.

That’s just it, this wasn’t some unforeseen future that just crept up and hit them in the face, it was a conscious decision they made. There was no need to foresee the future, they didn’t need to see through time, they said one thing and then did another consciously.

Then tried to cover their own butts, if that is not the case then they are failing at making it look different.

No. But telling people for months and months that they needed to purchase the game before HoT drops, then on the day pre purchase is announced, give it away for nothing, then try to covering their tracks, is.

Unless you are seriously trying to tell us they made that decision on the day of pre purchase? They knew, and knowingly were deceptive, not telling the community or potential new players – profiting off of that info in the meantime. If people had known, they would have waited.

You underestimate the effort it takes to coordinate a games release. There is so much going on, and with E3 that just passed one day ago.. They updated this FAQ as soon as possible and addressed the forums and those who had concerns about already purchasing the game.

They didn’t change the FAQs soon enough. They did this when? Yesterday? I guarantee they knew they were going to combine the 2 games before yesterday.

Realistically, they’ve known this for weeks in order to design and execute the ad. Could they have known about this all along? Sure. Could they have changed the plan at some time? Yeah. We don’t know.

But they definitely knew about this before the actual changes were made.

I’m saying it’s pretty obvious the decision was made recently BECAUSE of all the flak this is generating. Never attribute to malice what can be explained by ignorance or stupidity. This change in plans has all the ear marks of a rushed decision and they’re gonna be mopping up for a while, but updating the FAQ is not the beginning of some grand cover up. Its LAUGHABLE that people think it is given how trivially easy it is to check and verify the previous text.

Why. Would. They?

Updating a FAQ after a major announcement is routine (or should be). The Announcement itself was the announcement to the community. “Hey, we’ve decided to pack in the base-game.” There, announced.

It came down to players retrieving cached web pages before they admitted they changed it.

Did someone claim they hadn’t? This post I need to see. Because its so fluffy white kittening simple in this day and age to check the contents of an archived page that a denial would be a job-terminating bit of stupidity and I want to get some popcorn ready.

@Nike: Keeping FAQ current is good, but they did it in a way that invited this response. A sudden change of plans is definitely understandable. However, it should have immediately been made clear why the change was made and that those effected negatively would be compensated.

Yes, people are overreacting. I was pretty ticked myself before having all the info since I’ve recently recommended the game to a number of friends. Who wants to feel he is the reason his friends waisted money? Bottom line is a company has to avoid even the appearance of bad practices. At least it’s just the image that needs to be fixed, not the actual company.

You see, you just don’t get it. If you want to cherish Anet and preach the good word about them then do so, but do not expect others to buy into it. If you don’t believe or want to believe that they handle this in a way that looks pretty kitten shady then that is your right.
I am not so blind, I also run my own business, if something like this happened I would be all over it to put out the fire before it gets to big. They seem content letting it burn, you don’t wait 24 hours to address it, you put the fire out asap. If you don’t then it makes you look like you either simply don’t care about your consumers or your hiding something.

You can believe what you like, and I will believe what I like.

If it is a god honest mistake then they need to get their heads out of their butts and deal with it sooner rather then later. As you can see from these forums the fire is spreading, its all over several other forums now too. This is not the publicity they want, that saying about there is no such thing as bad publicity ? ya its BS.

After more thought actually agreeing with you. Hopefully some voices against all the FAQ change hype will help people focus on more important issues than accidents. However, it would probably be good to voice it in a way that acknowledges there was a mistake and it’s being fixed, as opposed to sarcasm. Nothing against humor, but if a guy somehow missed the fact it’s a mistake and being fixed, your wit could be taken the wrong way.

The larger the business the higher the expectations. Right, wrong or indifferent the size of the company really doesn’t matter even if what I said above is true, we owe it to our consumers to uphold our obligations to them, morally and legally.

No, they didn’t.
1. Their timeframe is one month only (while the info and sales tied to it started from the very beginning of this year).
2. To get compensated you need to contact support on your own (which many people who do not read these forums will not know – Anet doesn’t exactly advertise this fact).
3. Anet would compensate only those people that bought the game directly from them. Many people did that through intermediaries (i.e. Amazon, or game shops), and those will not get an option of upgrading to HoT. At best (if they bought really recently, but see point 1) they might be able to return the game and cancel the sale, but it would mean getting their account closed and starting from zero.

In short, Anet" compensation" offer is not really worth that much.

Actions, not words.

Wow , just wow

Ethically speaking

A retraction should have been issued, and any person that bought the base game from the date of the of the original release of the FAQ , to the date of the “Edited” FAQ that goes on to buy the HoT expansion SHOULD be refunded the price of the base game.

Yes. Yes it is. Which is barely even related to updating the FAQ so people reading it now and in the future don’t get mislead.

The problem is not the fact that FAQ were updated. It the difference between the 2 answers to the same question. The first one was what boosted those sales a few months ago, when newer players were convinced they had to buy the core game.

So, the FAQ were changed to reflect the current situation. After they made money from this con, they changed their business plan to something that clashed with what was promised and completely devalued the product they sold to those players, and they didn’t even leave a note in the FAQ to communicate this change.

If it weren’t for wayback machine, those players would be starring at the page and thinking they probably imagined reading that answer in the first place.

More importantly, the way they are handling this even now doesn’t even begin to resemble any form of compensation.

@ Errant
Didn’t you start a thread about this right after it happened? Where did it go?
