It would be easier for me to make a new character and use my instant lvl 30 book and 50 tomes of exp, than to get full map completion for new specializations.
Shouldn’t be more than 100 Hero Points.

Take into mind that you’ll be unlocking traits and skills to get the whole experience. Personally I think it should be over 100 just for the traits.
I really feel it’s a waste if I don’t use 100% of my hero points for this.

So what you’re saying is I should have to do map completion on every single one of my characters if I want to play the new specialization I just paid $60 for?
I don’t PvE that often, I WvW. Now that gaining lvl’s once you’re 80 doesn’t give Hero Points, over 100 Hero Points is asinine.

I’ll give you one right now. I don’t want to only do hero challenges. I want freedom to progress through a multitude of methods. Its a serious problem that anet should address.
Actually it isn’t. It’s only a problem for those that don’t want to do the work and play the game the way it’s being designed.
I don’t want to have to sell junk. I want it to just be converted into gold for me. That’s a serious problem, but I don’t expect ANet to do anything about it because that’s not how they designed the game.
Oh give me a break. Remember the wahwah about having to finish world completion on the WvW BLs? That was how the game was designed, and due to overwhelming griping by the PvE players it was changed. Remember the wahwah about not sharing WvW points? There have been lots of wahwahs about things in this game that were changed to appease players.
Really the only players this inconveniences are the WvW players, and that’s still a fairly large portion of their playerbase. Most of the characters I play have around 80-90 banked hero points. I have these due to taking a large break from the game mode I enjoy to play a game mode I dislike. Now I’m being told I might need 80 or 90 MORE HPs that I have to snag from a game mode that I still dislike to play for content I am paying for.
Give me a storyline quest that I have to go through. Make the HP needed to unlock 65, which is what was said would be the amount needed beforehand. Heck, let me “sacrifice” one of the level 80 engis(I have two of each class at level 80) that I leveled to make my remaining engi a scrapper. BUT don’t make me go farm HP on the 4 characters I want to unlock elite spec for in a boring manner.

People need to calm down, its not that hard. I have one of each class with 214 hero points, it took me like 2 weeks to get every class like that. While you’re all on the forums complaining you could easily spend the next 2 weeks preparing instead. Or you can spend the next 2 weeks complaining and have to do it at launch.

Let me know how I can get hero points for my Revenant so I can WvW with my guild with the Elite spec right now.
Thanks.
People seem to think getting hero points is an accomplishment; especially once you Tome to 80 and deck your toon out in Ascended gear to get them with. Its just a mindless grind, and not having any way to get a reasonable number of hero points in WvW is absurd.
Of course, pretty much everything about rewards and progression in WvW is absurd so its also par for the course.

Absolutely not, unless you used all of your hero points to unlock every trait and skill, even though you’re definitely not going to use them. I’m probably going to have to do that for two of my characters, but some should be fine, cause I only spent the points I specifically needed for my build.

Easy, level to 80. Done. Oh, one other step, don’t buy everything, only buy the traits and skills you actually need to play your build. Again, done. I should note that it’s very possible that you can’t just BE the Elite Spec because you’re an 80. You will probably have to go into HoT and specifically unlock it for that specific character.

The problem with the advice of “don’t unlock everything” is that when the new system came in, a lot of us with a lot of 80’s (me included) did unlock everything because there was no reason presented not to and having flexible builds is nice. As those points cannot be refunded, it behooves ANet not to make it impossible to spec out as elites with the special skins unlocked if wished. After all, they encouraged us to use the new system, and for non-80’s they auto-selected some traitlines to spend points on that might not be what someone wanted come time to add in the elite.

Like I said, it shouldn’t be easier for me to just lvl up a new character with the tomes I have and play the new elite spec.
They should make it easy enough to get on the character you have already with little to no grinding.
Not 250 Hero Points where I’ll have to run around for days getting them, when I could just level a new character.

The skill point system was better: you were always able to progress in the game no matter if you were only a devoted player of PvE, WvW or PvP.
XP points did provide level progression and level progression was equal to skill points, tradeable by skills, traits and some valuable recipes. Even PvP granted level progression and skill points progression.
If the new hero system really requires 170-250 points to unlock every character specialization and level progression in WvW or PvP doesn’t grant hero points then can be said that the system is unfair, and that Arenanet is forcing bottlenecks making mandatory some kind of gameplay and game modes to being able to progress.
Focusing gameplay in fractals (which is niche and requieres very expensive gear to progress), raids (which were described as a game mode which not everyone will be able to do) and this new mega-grinding system of hero points effectively discourages me from playing my alts. Arenanet is walking on ice here...

It is silly asking the unlock to cost more than 100 hero points.
Currently unlocking 1 specialisation takes 60 points and 1 full set of skills takes around 20-25 points. That’s 85 in total, excluding the runes/sigils and profession skins.
If the new hero system really requires 170-250 points to unlock every character specialization and level progression in WvW or PvP doesn’t grant hero points then can be said that the system is unfair, and that Arenanet is forcing bottlenecks making mandatory some kind of gameplay and game modes to being able to progress.
Agreed. If we deduct the skills/traits costing 85, I cannot imagine how 2 skins and upgrade components is going to be worth the other 85 points.
edit: messed up the quotes.

I have 15 characters with 189/189 HP
just geetting all HP and WP takes me about 2-3 days depoending on the amount of playing done beofre, My engineer at 2% map completion was “unlocked” in 3 days…. it’s now at 52% hand has all in map waypoints and heropoints, except for the cities, Couldn’t bring myself to run the cities AGAIN…
Of course I have 9 times map completion and 6 times this 189/189 & 486/486 So I ‘me resonably expereicned in finding all WP’s and HP’s
Just take a speedboost/ banner/ or any other way you can gain speed (signets?) and run a cirle around the map , then one in the center, should be enough for most. And If in oor , just do the complete maps. Drops for the maps (Orr and frostgorge, except forstgorge needs some hearts) tend to be nice.

So with the recent blog post: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/its-the-final-countdown/
I’ve noticed a certain line regarding Elite Specilizations: “overcoming challenges in the jungle to unlock your elite specialization”.
Does this line implies we won’t be unlocking our elite specs with hero points?

That is curious. I think at the most, it will mean that for PvE (and for PvE only) you need to do something in addition to spending hero points.

I’ve always thought that with the datamined unlocking method of elite specs that have shown we needed 250 hero points to “fully” unlock them was really weird since the maximum “extra” points available to a character is 214, and from what I’ve seen during the BWE you don’t get Hero points in HoT.

Sacrx “The Machine”, leader of Red Guard guild was the first player to reach the 250k kills WvW achievement. His main has like 12% of the PvE map unlocked.
My point is: the fact that some players (as you) seems to enjoy doing PvE don’t must mean than some others which doesn’t care about that game mode should be forced to do PvE in order to progress, SPECIALLY SINCE THAT WASN’T THE CASE BEFORE (with the old skill point system).
I’m sure that the current PvP and WvW players are well aware about GW2 being a game oriented towards PvE, and well aware also about that playing PvP/WvW is less rewarding in terms of gold/materials, but we accept that handicap in exchange to being able to progress slowly in game modes we really enjoy. But there’s a difference beween “slowly progressing” and “play PvE or get handicaped”.

As in the elite specialization itself will be locked. It would be odd to just be given access to it, so I assumed it would be unlocked through the story. You will still need to spend hero points to unlock the actual skills and traits. That was the purpose of changing the system in the first place.

Which I would hazard a guess that most people did. The fact that we got exactly the number of pts to unlock everything (no more, no less) is a pretty big clue. There is also a rumor that you will need 100% unlock of everything else anyway, which would make the argument moot.

“Unlocked” is the key word. We “unlock” item collection achievements. We still have to collect all of the individual items.
ANet may have jumped the shark here with me. I have 5 of my 15 level 80s that I want to unlock elite specs. Some have plenty of HPs(100+) as they were the ones that are “old” characters, but 3 of them have single-digit world unlock sitting on 30-40 HP banked. I will be terribly letdown should I have to spend days and days in the PvE-land unlocking HPs while my guild is raiding in WvW-land.

They said in a previous blog that they haven’t shown us all the Mastery lines they will have. I have to wonder if it’s not another mastery line system where getting to the end of each line unlocks first skills, then traits, then skins. If so, doing it once should unlock all for every char since its account wide.

I really really wish we’d get some real information on this.
Day 1 can I unlock elite specizalation?
Will it cost hero points still?
How many hero points?
If it’s story driven how far into story do I need to go? The games a week away from release now and elite specizalations are a major selling point yet we still have 0 idea how to actually unlock them. Anet please give us some info!

It would be nice if they would explain their statement, unlocking in the jungle, as I was erroneous in thinking that we would be able to unlock elite specializations with just hero points whether or not we were playing HoT. Was hoping that my main w/map completion, who has all specialization & skills unlocked and map completion, would be able to unlock her elites (not that I really want to be a Druid), but I did pre-purchase HoT And I know many people, myself included who’ve been getting hero points on various alts, for the last little while. Some clarification would be in order.

Last we saw from the dat, it took 170 hero points to unlock all skills/traits, and 250 to unlock everything related to the elite spec.
But how to begin unlocking is the true mystery. IIRC, in the beginning it was said that elite spec unlocking would “tie into the lore”. Beyond that…

My main sits with 100% mapping + WvW + Krait Shard for a total of 214 HP. I speculate somewhere in that region for elite spec unlocks + new utilities.

A few questions about unlocking elite specs. Sorry if it has been answered before but I have not seen it.
How Many hero points will it cost to unlock the elite specs?
Will there be points left for future specs or should we think about conserving points for the next spec?
Is it like a quest we must go through to unlock it or a person to find?
I may have other questions but those are the ones I have thus far.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

If it takes 214 HP to unlock elite specs you are going to see many many WvW players playing basic specs. The elite specs you see in WvW are going to be PvX players coming in from time to time.
Wish for once they’d take into account that the game is really 3 games in one, and some people don’t enjoy some aspects of their game.

Seriously, how many more times do veteran players need to do stuff to ensure they have access to all available skills?
I bought all the ‘training books’ when the game first launched (no gold refund there BTW), I did all the temple events on all 8 characters when they changed the system and introduced the last lot of ‘Elite’ skills (Thanks that was a big waste of my time!) and I have 100% world completion and therefore every hero/skill point or whatever they are calling them these days going in to HOT – I think I’ve put enough gold and effort into previous attempts to get the skills system right that for all veterans with world completion it should simply be a case of spending all those unused skill/hero points.

Which is HUGE for me. If the only thing at all in HOT was to let guardians have a good ranged weapon it would be worth it. That far surpasses anything else we know what we are getting.
Yes, I want to know the details too. Until recently they had not even said much about how to unlock elites. Now that we know we need to unlock the traits and skills individually of course there is some question about it.
