I’m just going to give you all my opinion on the “veteran entitlement mentality” as some people have called it, and the overall price of the expansion+ what comes with it.

To get us all on the same page, out frustrations are not because the expansion is 50 USD, its because arenanet has once again left the veterans out of the loop and made us feel that out continued dedication to there company has gone unappreciated.

A new player coming in gets a package that arena net values at 90 dollars, 50 for the expac and 40 for the game.

Veterans will pay the same as everyone else while only getting half of the content. Now I know that it was supposed to be added as an incentive for new players to get into the game, but when you look at what we are getting it’s rather lack luster, and having something so big given to the new players. Its just upsetting having supported the game since launch and being put on a back burner again.

It was just disappointing to us to see arena net not include something for the Veterans, and that’s perfectly acceptable.

You see a lot of posts out there from people saying things like. The veterans are too toxic and just cant be happy supporting the company. That’s not the case. We veterans are toxic because we DO support the company. More then anyone coming into this game now has, we love gw2 , we love arena net and the amazing worlds they’ve created , we have supported them for years, and hopefully years to come, but what we always see happening is all of our support is taken for granted.. just think of how many gems the veterans have purchased since the start, all the gw2 pre orders, and the recommendations to friends to play, I’ve personally spent at least 500 on gems, and recommended countless to buy the game and have even purchases the digital deluxe addition for a friend who wanted to play but didn’t have the money

We’ve supported a net from the start, and most of us would he happy paying for hot at 50 dollars, our frustrations simply come from arena net catering to new players and pushing veterans to the side, we’ve seen them do this before, NPE for example. Those who even know what that is. I’m sure lots of people who Will read this weren’t even around for that . And for those that were. Remember how the vets felt then too.

The veterans just want to see something given to them as well. Its not about “entitlement” its about being treated fairly and being acknowledged for our years of support.

I’m sorry but what you’re saying is every time a company drops a price on something for someone, they should give you something else. Presumably, your reward for the game is playing. You bought the game to play. What did we get? Log in rewards. We’ve been logging in longer.

Games drop in price all the time. Other companies don’t automatically give something to vets when they drop the price for new people. And you know, it would be nice if Anet did give me something for being the support I am, but you know, thousands of hours of fun is what I got for my money.

I think that the way the request is phrased makes it sound like everyone else is doing something different. In reality, MMO players are often paying more to get in early. In every single MMO I can think of this is true. The early you’re in, the more you pay but you also have more time with the game.

Would it have been nice to get something. Sure. Is it something wrong that a company is reducing the price on something, even to 0 to try to get more customers.

It’s pretty much business as usual. Just be happy you weren’t play ESO since launch or SWToR since launch, or even WoW since launch, or Lotro or DDO, because those guys got screwed in a much larger way.

@vayne. It’s good to see you in the forums again. Its been a while since I’ve had the pleasure.

Not once have I said I got “skrewed over” all’s I’ve said Is. These are the reasons the veterans feel frustrated. We have that right sir. We can feel frustrated, it’s acceptable to feel as though our dedication has been overlooked once again to cater to their new players, and when you look at how they did it. All Those pre expansion sales just to weeks later announce the base game will be included in the expansion, we were only as good as our money

I’m fine with the core game now being free. What I’m not fine with is:

  • No extra character slot included with the expansion, which you pretty much need to play the new profession. This raises the price to $60 bucks, instead of $50 bucks.
  • The sneaky change to the FAQ, and how they screwed recent players over who bought the core game mere days before making it free.
  • The huge price of this small expansion. It has the price of a full game, but we know based on what they’ve shown us, that is not a very big expansion. So, what are we paying for? Are we paying for the full game + the expansion for free, or the other way around? Many of us find this very shady. If the core game is truly free, why not include an extra code for the core game along with the purchase? It is not incorrect for the players to feel like they are paying for the core game twice, and only getting a small expansion for it.
  • Value for our money. If you compare this expansion with previous expansions for GW1, it is severely lacking in features, and very expensive considering what you get for that price.
  • Pre-purchase, yet no details for when it will be ready, or what it will all contain. That’s a lot of money to be spending on a future product of unknown quality, size and release date. Pre-purchase is a bad deal for any player, whether they realize it or not.
  • Guild Halls being loudly announced as a great new feature for this expansion, while they should have been included with the original game to begin with. I’m sorry Anet, but that kind of ruins my enthusiasm.
  • I can’t help but feel that I need to buy this expansion to fix my profession (the necromancer). Will we see any fix for the old necromancer after the Reaper becomes the current meta for all necros? Or will the old necro simply be neglected and forgotten, like it has been for over 3 years now?

Anet can’t do a thing until the expansion is released without further hate. Once the expansion is out, they can take the preorder bundles down and replace them with an expansion only package and a full game package containing both. That full bundle at 50, the expansion only at 35-40 and all is well. I’m also a veteran who has prepurchased the game and left at least 200 € in the shop, I sure as hell won’t buy any of the preorder bundles.

well i’d love to address that:
those are two separate things –
let’s say there was a sale that lasted a weekend and the game was 10 bucks then (as we know there were several), this is all perfectly fine, because anet can price their product however they want
and above all everyone who paid the 10 bucks got the same thing

and now we have this thing
the price is still the same for both groups, the time period is still the same for both groups (unlike the discount sale example)
however some people who pay the 50 bucks get a different products in return

Here’s another way to look at it.

You go to the pub and order one $5 beer.

10min later they run a special, $2 for a beer.

Are you mad? No you buy another beer or keep drinking what you have.

They announce a celebration deal that if you bought a beer that day you can also get a burger for $5.

The kitchen opens and the pub starts selling $5 burgers with a free beer instead.

Someone walks in and buys a burger and gets a beer.

You walk up and order a burger, but you don’t get a beer because you already bought one that day.

Are you mad?

1 is infinite times greater than 0.
The price of games drop to a fraction of their original value, different than zero.
when you reduce that value to zero, and Anet did, then you should reward those who purchased the game before you reduced that to zero.
Who does this?
TESO.
Wildstar.
Aion.
And many others.

I’ll repeat.
1 is infinite times greater than 0
even if I paid the game 20 euros and just 1 month later there was another sale at 10 euro, I wasn’t mad.
but 20 is just two times greater than 10, not infinite.

Anet has divided by zero, now the consequences are for everyone to see.

from this vet – i actually had my mind set on this expansion for a while – gw2 is pretty much my main game and has been for years…i don’t watch tv lol.

I didn’t want to get excited about it ( though i really did want to get excited because I always have been ) But i did not allow myself to get excited about it because I’ve felt a lot of let downs that started making the game more painful than a moment of relaxation. Example, I’m a pvp’r ….I enjoy specifically wvw – the pvp area seems too knee-jerk reaction for me to consider competitive ….but wvw is just fun running with a zerg, you can hear me singing “Born free” at any given time when rolling with my crew….

but then they brought ascended weapons that you have to grind for to get the best stats FORCING me to pve – I was all wvw ….and the video said “Play as you want” …well I want to play with the best stats / equal to everyone else playing with best stats in wvw. “There’s no grind” – I had to grind to get a grandmaster, then grind to get the mats or money to buy mats to make ascended weapons, and still grinding for about another 15 years to get one character all ascended. Fractals are not play as I want, because I’m tired of waiting 40 hours to put together a team where one person kicks you out for any given reason, that’s stupid and antisocial and I’m here to relax, but anet seemed to have their own agenda and anything I tried to say got flagged on the forum….fine , I just said whatever and now roam the game like some drone trying to find anything fun i can do with random pug groups while farming mats…

join guilds they said, i joined many, all either died or run by some wanna be gawd that wanted to dictate your every gaming moment. The 2 coolest guilds I ever joined are now dead – 2 lists of 450 players each totally grayed out …gone. I stayed in them hoping one day an event ..such as this, that ended up dissing vets, would bring them back. but forget that now….

but i digress…

I look at the upgrade price for hot ….and i’m like whoa 50 bucks ….my boys must need money …hrmmm…….then I see that to get 1 slot ….I need to spend 25 bucks more to get junk i dont use and means nothing to anyone else looking at me ….I’m all about stats not fluff. so my concern is a good account to hold items i use with best stats and mats to make em. not no mini that’s going to stand by me as i die in wvw ….no…just no….

but does my voice matter on the forum, ….no …just no..

so anyways…..I see they are making a campaign for new members …and I’m like …yep …they need money

but wait …..they quietly changes faqs………vets have to spend 25 extra bucks more to get just 1 slot …..the forum is in an uproar and they aren’t saying anything, just quietly shutting down threads ….

suddenly…..i went from feeling like my boys needed funding, to feeling like a lab rat with some alien guys in white coats wondering what my financial pain threshold is …..

so, i’m starting to think, body snatchers here ……this isn’t the team I originally supported….and something suspect is going on……. yeah i like guidwars a lot ….

can i have my original team back please ? i have no idea who these new guys are running the show. yeah your game looks great, just like 50 others do too. What made it all special was the og gw team ….where’d they go ? 50 bucks is a lot of money to pay for bug hunting, and no character slot ….my guys wouldn’t have tried to play me like that …and they knew i was ready to buy anything from the shop in gw1….

my own personal #hotgate conspiracy theory – they’ve been invaded by aliens.

He has the right to voice his opinion.
As we all have.
Many other players already expressed theirs, and that treating new customers better than old customers is a poor marketing decision.

This wouldn’t be a problem, unless Anet is dead serious in selling 2M subscription at full price.
In that case, I feel sorry for them, because I’m quite sure this little faux pas will affect HoT prepurchase in the short term, the HoT purchase in the long term, and even gem sales.

Ugh, its just a promotional gimmick. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s no different than black friday sales where the first ‘x’ number of customers get ‘y’ where ‘y’ is an additional discount or a free item or what have you. In this particular instance the promotion is simply ‘get the core game free if you don’t current have an account.’ Would you people honestly be placated if they substituted a character slot for those that already have an account? I’m sure some of you would, but I guarantee there would be others that wouldn’t. It becomes a lose-lose scenario for anet.

Nah, if they put in a character slot no one could complain.
GW2 at its minimum costed 10 euros.

It becomes a lose-lose scenario for anet.

no it’s not the same
on black friday everyone gets a discount
here only new players get a bonus

i will be “placated” if they make the offer the same for everyone

No, everyone does not get a discount. For the promotions for ‘first ’x’ number through the door’ if you’re x+1, you don’t get the promotion. Additionally, once stock is gone, the promotion/discount is over. If you’re stock+1, you’re kitten out of luck. You can’t get a raincheck that you can come back and cash in later. You might be able to go to a different store and snag what you’re after, but it may not be the same discount or promotion at store B as it was at store A. Companies (especially around here) also love their “1 hour only” sales. If you shop early, or come in after that specified time frame, well oh well for you. This is no different.

Nah, if they put in a character slot no one could complain.
GW2 at its minimum costed 10 euros.
A character slot is the rough equivalent of 10 euros (with gems).

It would be fair.

Based on the response above yours, I’m thinking you’re incorrect on the no one would complain.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

And if you get a character slot everyone who purchased the core game with it for free complains about getting treated worse again…
And if everyone gets one you’d still cry about the core game.

How are they treated worse? You’re talking nonsense.
They are getting a core game whose value was set at a nominal 40 euros, 20 or 10 during sales.

Just admit you want to nitpick.

They have been promised to get it for free.
So if you get a gift they are treated worse.

1) it’s still not the same thing because everyone has a chance to get the discount; here vets are simply denied the bonus

2) i didn’t know that about black Friday, i live in europe, i think that this practice sucks too, but not as bad as what anet is doing

you can get the un-expanded version of guildwars 2 on amazon.com for 39.99
this comes with 5 slots – the expansion bundles this bringing the value of the expansion to 10 dollars. for new players

For vets, you only get the expansion, and have to go next tier to 74.99 to get 1 slot.

yeah, i can get that slot with gems….but I’d still be paying 50+ dollars for just an expac and 1 slot. That’s more than starting over.

Could they at least say “Please, we need your help guys”.

I don’t see how it’s worse. It’s the exact same thing. Its just ‘if you dont own’ vs first ‘x’ number. Although, admittedly, they could have added that on top – “First ‘x’ number of new customer (that don’t currently own the base game) get the base game for free!” Very common promotional crap in the retail world today.

Actually, Dish and DirectTV do this type of promotional crap all the time. Great package offers with great pricing, but you can only get it if you’re not already a customer.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Except they they’ve been selling that game for $10 multiple times already, so OP, how did you feel that thousands of people (probably more) bought it for $10?

I do lobe it when you move away from the topic of conversation. Yes the games been on sale, and no one cares. All people are asking for is equal value for there money if they already own GW2. ANet did a Ninja edit of the FAQ, an FAQ that may have mislead some people in getting the game early as they would have believed they where getting a better deal. You seem unable or unwilling to see this side of things and tell everyone they are wrong for having a point of view that differs from yours.

Opinions, everyone has one. Makes me laugh when people try to tell others what there’s should be.

It made me feel crappy. I bought a second copy of the game for $10 only to find out if I had waited I would have gotten it bundled with the base game. Now, even if I spend the $50 for the x-pac I need to spend another $10 for a character slot.

You can’t do it that way.
They said you get the game as a free bonus if you are new and the expansion is 50$.
So if you get something like a character slot people would be kittened again because now it’s them who have to pay extra for that.

You have to handle it like A-Net said it. Not like they meant it. (Just like the FAQ problem)

They are getting 5 character slots. Not one.
The game is given for them for free, but it isn’t actually free, otherwise it wouldn’t be a gift, just something everyone has.
It’s like, idk, “purchase this thing from me and I’ll give you Realm of the Mad God, Tera, Aion, and many other f2p titles”.

So , if they complained because, while getting things for free, other players also got something of the same value, wouldn’t then they be the ENTITLED ones?

  • The huge price of this small expansion. It has the price of a full game.

I cannot agree with this point. Maybe “full games” are $50 where you come from. Where I live, they’re $60. Of MMO’s I’ve seen that are charging for expansions, one is $50 and the other is $40.

I strongly encourage critical examination of products before buying, and, for me, the value of what’s been shown about HoT would be sufficient only if I valued new weapon choices and a new profession a lot more than I do. Since my primary motivation is playable content, it remains to be seen whether HoT will provide enough to justify me spending for it. This will be especially true if the content is mostly Silverwastes 2.0, which I would view as meh.

The producer of FFXIV stated when he took over to spearhead the revision which saved the game that he was willing to take a loss on the game to save the franchise’s reputation. For all I know, that thinking is still in force there, and the lower price for their expansion is due in part to that thinking. What’s more, the game rebuild seems to have worked. Consumers can tell when they’re being given value for their money. While value will differ from person to person, collective agreement plays a strong role in the popular opinion as to whether value is present or not.

ANet may be as forward thinking as the folks at SE, but it sure doesn’t seem that way sometimes.

on one hand i don’t think i can accurately judge what would be an equal value of the bonus, so the most obvious thing for me would be to have everyone receive said bonus: one code for hot + one code for core game, to do with as we please

on the other hand since the game has dropped as low as 10 euros, the equivalent in gems would also be suitable, because that way everyone would have a choice what to use them for

as for you are other point:

the two things are different because in the “first of X” type of thing everyone can participate, and be the first of X;
here it is over before it starts, we already bought so we are screwed

..i screwed up the quotes somehow.. oh well

I have to thank you for proving my point that even if Anet included a character slot, there would still be those that are not content.

As for the other, it’s the same general principle. Still, if we want to go very specific apples to apples, I’ll refer back to the Dish and DirectTV promotions. ISP and cable providers do this as well. You can only get certain package deals if you are not already a customer. You can upgrade as an existing customer, but you still don’t get the same deal because you already have service. That is the exact same thing. Both the existing customer and the new one end up with the exact same item, but the new one gets a much better deal. Yet very few people call foul there.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

They can’t complain. They’ll be getting no less than 3 character slots. Wasn’t it 5? Plus, they will get a free core game which most people paid $50+ for which they didn’t need to pay for.
