Worst case, you have something free, but useless
Uhm, no, you will NOT have anything for free, unless you plan to play on a new account starting from level 1, you wont be able to make use of the free account, the ‘core’ game and the expansion come bundled together, as one account, so you either add it to your existing account which upgrades it to Heart of Thorns and you lose that free ‘core’ game, or you start a brand new account all together.
At least get it right if you are just going to blindly lash out everyone in such an immature way.
Did you fail to read his post? He said free but useless. It matches his example, he got Bioshock for free, but already owns it, so it’s useless.
Now if the core game came as a separate key, then you got something for free that isn’t useless. There’s a difference there.
I’m personally fine with the pricing. Would I like it cheaper or with one character slot? Of course I would, that would be better value for money. But the pricing is fine as it is too.
And to those comparing this to Heavensward, do remember that FFXIV is a subscription game. So you are paying the price of Heavensward and then you’re still paying a subscription.
This pricing is still a better deal than all other MMOs that I’m personally aware of.
No I think you simply do not understand the concept of “You are not getting anything for free if you want to upgrade an existing account” He can give that second bioshock game to a friend, I cannot give that ‘free core game’ part of the bundle to anyone because it will be -gone- the moment I upgrade my account to Heart of Thorns.
So -No- you do -NOT- get anything, not even something useless.

Its a Joke. 50$ the beta wasnt all that great. Price range is worthy at most of 30$. It doesnt seem like no real expansion, just a bunch of nothings. Shouldn’t have spent to much time on your chinas servers.

I’ve been a GW player since Prophecies, and I must admit that this is the very first time ANet has done something that has actually made me feel sad to have supported them for so long… maybe they’ll release just the HoT upgrade soon?
This. Completely this. I’ve been playing Guild Wars for 10 years. This is a huge middle finger to their fans. I bought every campaign, every expansion, and I tried to buy gems regularly just to support the game. It’s insulting.
I guess the bright side is I have money to buy Batman: Arkham Knight now. It will only cost $10 more than HOT, and it’s, you know, an entire game.

Yes i just noticed that dirty move. They made GW2 sales while announcing HoT. Then this wording in FAQ. Then John makes jokes in complaint threads.
It’s just sad.

I am willing to pay $19.99 for an account upgrade that has the HoT content and includes a character slot. I am not interested in your products if you’re trying to scam me.
this is the kind of people that really makes me angry, blizzard has been robbing people for years…..
yet, you don’t wanna pay for a game that is b2p with NO sub !!!
Man, I hope the door hits you on your way out, really hard.
Well, that’s ignorant. I’ve spent plenty in the gem store on this game, so you can go ahead and take those entitlement comments elsewhere.
The point is they are saying that, if you want the expansion, that you have to buy the core game all over again with it. This would be the equivalent of them charging the same for Eye of the North that they charged for Guild Wars. I can understand, in this day and age, charging $20, maybe even $30; but $50 for the base package? So take your snarky kitten comments elsewhere. Plenty of us have paid for this game(probably more than you), and don’t think it’s a good idea to make us buy the core game all over again.

I don’t remember that argument. In every game, the ppl who complain on the forums about EVERYTHING are like 1-2% of the total player base, while the rest of the gamers enjoy the game or uninstall it. Those games were just bad, thats it
You need to statistics better. Yes, in every game the people who complain on the forums might constitute 1% of the player base. However, the people who defend/white knight on the forums ALSO constitute 1% of the player base. These two sides on forums REPRESENT 100% of the player base as a whole, and fairly accurate metrics can be created solely from forum posts. Otherwise, games companies wouldn’t bother with them.
And its not just smaller titles like Warhammer or CoH. It also happened to SWTOR, which went from a WoW style subscription fee to Free to Play precisely because the game was poorly designed, overcharged for everything, and the player base left in droves relatively shortly after release. And this from the same guys who made KOTOR, Mass Effect, Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, etc. SWTOR IIRC is the most expensive MMO created to date.
Forum opinion is one of the BEST litmus tests for a game’s health, when complaint threads start to dominate, the developers should recognize it as a potential major issue.

I was expecting $40 and assuming it would come with a character slot. If I was wrong about just one of those things it would still be an automatic buy. As it is I am Going to have to think about it, although I probably will get it.
I think part of the problem may be that we have got so very little in game over the past five months that this has hit us at the wrong psychological moment. I’m already down to just logging in for dailies, this latest buzz kill might stop even that. I’m more sad than angry.

Perfect example of ArenaNet’s dishonesty.
So, ArenaNet expects people to:
• Pay FULL price right now (it’s not even a pre-order, they’re calling it a pre-purchase)
• For a product we have NO IDEA when we will receive, since they have not given us even a release window, much less a release date
• Asking an ABSURD price for what is basically Living World Season 3 plus a few new skills.
• No new character slot, despite how the expansion comes with a new profession thus of course a lot of players will want to make a new character.
• AND, new players get the full game plus the expansion, while veterans, those who actually funded the expansion, get to pay the same price for less than half the same content.
This is pathetic. I knew ArenaNet was hurting for money, but this is way too much.
People, if you want a honest deal, go here:
With the Summer Sale that is happening right now, you’ll find lots of games to keep you busy until this so-called expansion gets slashed to a decent price.
And to those of you who are buying HoT right now, all I have to say is: “a fool and his money…”
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

It’s a rip off at the current price point for what you get. You look at other MMO expansions and they are much beefier than what HoT is.
You may very well be right, but the jury is still out on that one… we don’t know the total number of maps in HoT (although now we can do some math Verdant Brink + “Map Shown during specialization reveals” + 2x Guild Hall maps, that based on their statements seem like more or less small to medium sized zones, but I doubt that is all) nor do we know anything about their “challenging group content” or how much story content there will be (it is going to be hard to gauge it anyways with the lack of levels even if they had said something about it).
True, we really don’t know enough to say whether this xpac will be big enough for the price. I don’t understand all this whining though, just wait and see. No one’s forced to buy the game right now. Wait till everything is revealed or even till release and then decide if it’s worth the price or not.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Ardenwolfe.8590
Isn’t $40-$50 the standard price for an MMO xpac? I’m kinda confused since I paid $60 for WoW expacs and the upcoming FFXIV xpac is $40 (not counting the monthly fees).
Can anybody point me to a $20 expac? I can’t seem to find one.
I think City of Villains cost twenty dollars. All the expansions to Fate cost that or under. Same with Torchlight’s followups. The original Diablo expansion, with the monk, was also twenty dollars or so.
Just off the top of my head. Edit: Oh and Age of Conan’s Godslayer expansion was under twenty too. Give or take five dollars, if I recall. And, of course, you have the original Guild Wars expansions. I think Eye of the North was the only truly ‘expensive’ one, and at the time it was thirty dollars.

But it’s not $50 for the bundle, you’re buying the expansion for $50 and they’re throwing in the core game as a bonus. :/
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Deth.4109
When you pre order HoT you are NOT buying the core game as well. You are paying for all of the content that come with the expansion. The core game itself is absolutely FREE with this purchase and is just a added bonus for those who don’t already have the game. If you already own the game then you now have a spare account that you can use for alts(which is a good deal if you don’t want to pay for more character slots), give it to a friend or try out the EU servers if you NA only(reverse if your EU only). The expansion is not in any way over priced for the amount of content that is being supplied with it along with all of the living story updates that will come with it in time. The cost of the Original Guild Wars game $50. Every expansion after that was also $50. Granted those games were stand alone, Guild Wars 2 is not. It is a unique game that is still building is world and story which is why the core game itself is coming with the expansion. The amount of content that is being supplied in the expansion is well worth $50 especially on a game that DOESN’T require a monthly sub.
tl;dr Buy the expansion.
EDIT: Apparently you code that you are supplied with acts as either a HoT upgrade or a new account with HoT. You don’t get a second account but this is still a good deal.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: yanipheonu.5798
I mean, the alternative is they just didn’t give away a free account.
Do we really believe this would have somehow made the game cheaper? Honestly, it would have once again lined up with industry standard $50 expansion, but now new players have to pay more.
But hey, now we don’t feel like we missed out on our free account right?

This DLC is worth 10-15E. At most there will be 3 new mini-maps, that make 0.75 of a normal map for the entire dlc ; all the little new things are lazy design that meet your low quality low quantity standard. And 3 different version for a dlc ? a 100E ultimate for this ? How deep will you dig ?

The price is not fine as you are paying TWICE for the core game, think again if the money that you pay is your own hard earned money.
The Expansion is $49.99 (Standard) if you buy it on a new Account that doesn’t own the Core game you get the Core game for free. So if you own the Core Game you aren’t paying for another. Now I am not defending the price just wanted to clear that up. I for one think this is far to expensive for the amount of content that they have shown us up to this point compared to other MMOs hell even Guild Wars 1. I mean come on we don’t even get a single free Character Slot for buying the Standard Edition?
“the amount of content that they have shown us up to this point”
Yeah it is too much for content up to this point, but they have a lot more to show. Think you’re jumping ahead a little early? If all they have shown was the content they’re launching with the game would be out already.
No I don’t think I am jumping ahead to early. I don’t believe what they will show us from now till release will be enough to warrant the price.

There seems to be a lot of confusion here. People are upset that they are paying $50 to buy their game again bundled with the new expansion. There is not enough information out about the content here. If it is $50 worth of content and then the game is thrown in sure, I understand, but if this is 2 new silver-waste sized areas, 1 new class, and 4 hours of plot, then its not worth $50 and we will all assume that the bundle was made as an excuse to make us pay more. With so little info on how much actual new game content is in HoT, this looks to most of us like a big **** you to all of your player-base. Please give us more actual information so we can either praise your hard work or go get our pitchforks.

You have an account and you buy the xpack > you’re only getting the xpack, no new core game you could hand out to someone
You don’t have an account and you buy the xpack > you get the xpack and the core game.
If you have an account already, you’re nothing getting anything else but an upgrade to your account.

gw2 is a great value but they should have been able to understand that people do not like feeling like someone else is getting a better deal no matter how good the deal they are getting is or that they aren’t getting something they are paying for. Its a human behavior problem more then the value proposition that I think most are upset about. It was just careless packaging on their part. Logicaly gw2 is a great value being subscriptionless.

If you think that isn’t fair, you’re being incredibly selfish and entitled.
So basically anyone who disagrees with your opinion is “incredibly selfish and entitled”, guess that makes sense.
Expansion prices for MMOs are 40-50$. That’s how much you’re paying for this one. They’re throwing in the free game for new players (ie: not you). They’re doing new players a solid. They’re doing old players who want to get others into the game with new accounts… a solid.
If you’re complaining that you’re paying for the old content again (you’re not), and that new players who only play once HoT comes out (or in the betas) should have to pay for that old stuff, then yes – you’re acting selfish and entitled. You’re seeing the positive thing Anet is doing as a negative, because you don’t see it benefiting you (which is incorrect).
A new player not paying for the old game doesn’t affect you negatively. It affects you positively by keeping the game going and giving you new people to play with.

So my friends that bought the base game because I suggested they get into it before HoT are now giving me kitten about this. I wasn’t really on their side, but then one of them linked me this.
https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/105801626-Guild-Wars-2-Heart-of-Thorns-FAQ
“Q: Do I have to own Guild Wars 2 to play the expansion?
A: Yes. Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is an expansion to Guild Wars 2 and not a stand-alone campaign, and therefore it requires the base game to play.”I’ll admit that there is nothing in the hard, 100% strict interpretation of these words that explicitly refutes the idea that HoT and the base game could be bought together, but when stuff like this is posted and all your HoT announcements are timed with a sale of the base game?
I’m not even going to get into whether $50 is “worth it” or whatever, but any way you look at it this is pretty dirty marketing ANet.
I got fooled by the same thing when they said that the base game is needed for the HoT expansion. Which gave me impression that I didn’t need to pay any extra $ or at least anything this hefty to play the expansion.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Arioso.8519
The honestly, the $50 itself isn’t the biggest problem so much as new players are getting a much better deal than longtime players. It sucks for vets, but the biggest problem is for those who bought the game recently, especially those who paid the full $40 price.
We were specifically told that the base game would be required to play the expansion. Anyone who bought the game with this in mind literally wasted their money by not waiting a few months. People who’ve been playing since launch at least have the counter-argument of the value they’ve gotten out of years of playtime, but Pre-HoT new players that bought the game within the last 3 months were pretty much lied to and ripped off.
So… that’s the third thing on your poll, I guess.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

But it’s not $50 for the bundle, you’re buying the expansion for $50 and they’re throwing in the core game as a bonus. :/
We already know that. What use is the core game for Veteran players? We have no use for it, so instead of throwing in the core game free, why don’t they chuck in a free character slot instead? Or something that us Vets could actually benefit from?
But no, loyal customers have stayed with Anet since the beginning and have spent money on the game.
You harm your core and dedicated player base and you will see a massive drop in income.
Short term gains like this ploy have long term consequences in the form of loyal players that spend more in the long term than a few new players that give up after a couple of weeks will see Anet’s revenues in the form of microtransactions drop like bricks.
That is the concern, that is the upset. No one has a problem with the price, people have a problem with Vets being shafted yet again.

In general this was just a poor time to release this rediculously overpriced content. for $50 i could go buy like 10 games on the steam sale and get 10x the content.
1. Skyrim $9.99 (300 hours of content)
2. Boarderlands 2 $9.99 (31 hours of content)
3. Oblivion $9.99 (+200 hours of content)so there is $30 and over 500 hours of content, i just saved you $20 and gave you 3 of the best games ever released!
see my point
Tell me their price at release, all of them 60$, so this argument is stupid.
Yeah but thats the thing, its been a few year since there release… like 8 or 9 for Oblivion…..
Facts
1. these are all full games not dlcs
2. Witcher 3 just came out and already was on sale (not for much off but still)
3. this is a DLC, (Everyone of TES story DLC gives 30-40 hours of new content and go for around $20)
it was unwise when THE BIGGEST VIDEO GAME RETAILER ONLINE is having a MASSIVE sale with unbelievably low prices, to launch kitten DLC with less content then the core game.

GW1 campaigns had two new professions apiece and entire maps as big as the base Tyria map in Prophecies. There’s nothing to suggest HoT even has as much content as GW1’s actual expansion had (which cost less than $50, btw), let alone as much as Factions or Nightfall.
But the most recent Guild Wars 1 expansion, Eye of the North, came with no new profession, no character slots and basically a handful of zones. The fact is, the other games were full games, and only Eye of the North was an expansion. This is, by and large, along the same format as Eye of the North.
And it cost half of what this is costing.
Also, you say handful of zones, and I say 14 zones and 18 dungeons. Compared to 3 zones, 0 dungeons. It’s not even comparable. You’re paying twice as much for HOT for a tiny fraction of the content.

Okay what, the hell is this…………….
I own GW2 since launch.
I supported the game despite the fact that sometime I rant.
I was thinking 50 or 60 buck for the expansion with bonuses but what do we get; a mandatory base game package + expansion.
It’s like Anet are saying to player: “well guys thx for supporting us but we need extra money so will you pay AGAIN for the game that you already brought 3 years ago…KAY thx”.
What is wrong with the guy that took this decision ?

This is just my opinion:
$50 is the price of a standalone game or a campaign in Guild Wars 1. It would be nice if we could see more of what Heart of Thorns has to offer. Right now, we’ve gotten a beta preview on a small map and fly-by trailers. Nothing about the story, the new PvP Activities, or new Guild Missions. Or at least get an map overview screenshot of what we’ll be able to visit. Like, can we visit the entire west of the map only? The original GW2 gave us access to several landmasses for $50-$60 dollars. If we’re getting the same amount of content as the original GW2, I would feel $50+ is a fine price. Thank you for reading this post.

I think it’s also worth noting that this means that literally the only people that will not have full access to HoT content when it drops are…well, veteran players. People who bought the game before this HoT pre-order outrage, and just decided that the xpac was not worth it to them. New players will have their HoT accounts. People who have the money to spend or who don’t feel that there’s anything wrong with the xpac packages (a completely valid opinion, I might add, just one that I can’t bring myself to agree with) will have the HoT game. And that’s a big deal when the new main progression system (masteries) is exclusive for HoT.

Not paying $49.99 to “expand” a game I payed $25 for. Not with all the other valuable options out there.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Kitsune.1902
I don’t really understand. The instant I read the core game is included in the expansion, I felt disappointed. I knew the response from the majority of existing player community would be largely same. If it was clear to me within a second, I can’t possibly imagine it was unexpected to a.net either. If that’s the case, then why do this?
I think the normal – and in my opinion much more fair – way to do this would have been to drop the price of base game to – for example – $25, and lower the cost of all expansion options by the same amount. Current players would get $25 value for their existing game and have the expansion at reasonable cost. New players would not have to pay a dime more than they do now – since they’d get the game and expansion at the same cost. It is because of this that it feels clear to me adopting this different strategy has nothing to do with making it cheaper for new players. It has everything to do with making the current players pay more for the expansion.
The people who bought the base game recently would not feel so complitely screwed over either – sure, they’d have paid more for the base game, but it shouldn’t be unexpected that the game goes on sale for the launch of expansion.
Is the extra $25 drawn from all current players really worth all the feelings of unfairness and disappointment this decision causes? Really what’s worst about this whole thing to me, isn’t the extra cost, but that feeling it leaves. That the purchase of original game was just obsolated, simply to milk a few extra coins from me.
Throwing in a consolatory character slot wouldn’t do a thing about it. Frankly I don’t need another extra character slot, I have plenty of them already – and I’d already kept a throw-away character in one slot to free it up for revenant. It’s amazing how quickly the excitement over the expansion can die.

I don’t agree.
Normal players just play the game, or uninstall it and they don’t effin care about forums.
Like me, i have like 10 posts on forums since 3 years, since i don’t feel i need to post sth. Just came today since it is a HoT prepurchase day and saw this drama on forums

So I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the reason why a lot of people are frustrated with HoT pricing. Many of us were ready and willing to pay $50 for the expansion, as it’s pretty standard for MMOs nowadays. However, the slap in the face was that the loyal players that have been the only reason that GW2 has been able to even make it far enough to release an expansion are being offered a package that gives them nothing over new players. In fact, it gives the new players more (as existing players won’t be able to redeem their base games included in the $50 standard version). Not even a character slot for existing players only to show gratitude for their loyalty. I understand the arguments against “whining,” like GW2 having no monthly fee, but being slapped in the face so bluntly by these expansion options feels so directly insulting. Keep in mind that we had absolutely no warning that this expansion pack would be offered including the base game, which I don’t think any MMO has done before. We were all expecting the traditional “buy the game buy the xpac” approach. And what about the players who bought the base game in preparation for buying HoT? I don’t know. I love this game, but can’t bring myself to pre-order due to this nagging feeling of disappointment. Just my two cents.
I think it especially feels like so much a slap in the face since the new players have already been prioritised in updates before at the expense of the veterans: the trait/beginner zone’s update comes to mind. We were told then that this was for the new players and that veterans would get something later. So as a veteran I have to wonder, how much later?
I would have been willing to pay $50 for the expansion. Not the expansion bundled with the base game.
So basically, you’re salty that the price of a game goes down? Are you mad as well that other games’ prices go down after release or in sales? What’s your point here, because I’m not seeing it.
I responded to a post commenting on the differences between HoT and Heavensward by adding some they did not mention. That would make my point “Heavensward has more pre-purchase bonuses than HoT for a lower price”, I believe.

What are you people on about?
You have an account and you buy the xpack > you’re only getting the xpack, no new core game you could hand out to someone
You don’t have an account and you buy the xpack > you get the xpack and the core game.If you have an account already, you’re nothing getting anything else but an upgrade to your account.
can we have “xpac only” edition please ?

If you bought the core game recently, you can change it to a HoT pre-purchase.
