I have a question that I would appreciate a Dev or Customer Service response.
I have GW2 and would like to apply a HoT Upgrade to it.
HoT comes GW2, but does this mean I can open a second account with the free GW2 coming with the expansion?
If so, that would be great! I have real life friends on Emery Bay that I would love to join for WvW sometimes, but my home server is Sanctum of Rall. I don’t want to leave my WvW ingame friends on SoR, so I have been thinking of buying a new account the next time GW2 goes on sale just to join my real life friends for the occasional WvW outing.
Please tell me if this would work. If I don’t get a reply, I’ll ask Customer Service privately, but I figured some other people may be wondering the same thing – making this topic better addressed on a public forum.

I was on the fence about heart of thorns. Anet made the decision for me with it’s pricing. No thanks far too expensive, the features listed thus far don’t come close to justifying the cost of a new game. Anet got greedy, just playing semantics by claiming the expansion includes the core game free.

I completely agree, if you calculate the price for WoW’s expansion (where nobody is complaining) it would be 36 months (about), 15$ a month, which is 540$ alone. then a 40$ (I believe that’s average for WoW) you’re looking at 580$ total spent. INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL GAME which the WoW price does not include, you’re looking at 110$ for 3 years.
c’mon guys. Let it be. Use the extra account to your advantage.

Because marketing is run by soulless suits fresh out of Harvard (or somesuch other useless place) who haven´t got the slightest clue.
Actually good marketing people should know it´s 9 times more expensive to attract new customers than keeping the current ones happy.
For instance, Pareto´s law explains the 80-20 principle (say 80% of the gw2 population wont buy the expansion while 20% will, then 80% of HoT earnings come from that 20% of the current population, while the other 20% of the earnings will come from new players) unfortunately they did not take into account the fact that the f2p market is saturated and people don´t really care for shady deals, meaning part of the 80% of the current population might even switch to another game. So on the long run they are actually being less cost effective than if they didn´t announce the “expansion”.
Blizzard on the other hand does know their customers…… how many years and still going strong?

Information changes. Before they announced pre-purchase, the assumption was that you’d have to buy them separately. After the announcement, the base game is free and the expansion comes with it (for players who don’t have it already). For players who have the base game, the expansion is all they get for $50 (which is standard pricing for expansions these days).
Yes it is obvious that information has changed. The point is that it was done so maliciously, with all information up to within hours of Colin getting on that stage pointing in the exact direction that swindles people out of 40$

Already bought deluxe
Stop complaining about $50, it’s not greedy, you don’t have sub fees, and you should be able to pay it
Good job you wasted 25 bucks on a character slot that normally costs 10.
ANet makes money with their underhanded business practices because of people like you who don’t understand the value of things they buy. For 25 more dollars you would have gotten 50 dollars worth of gems. Considering that you just threw down 75 the moment they offered the preorder you’ll probably end up buying gems later on anyway so you should have bought the ultimate edition.

Other people are entitled to feel unhappy about the price of a product, and entitled to complain about it. Your opinion does not invalidate theirs. You feel it’s fair, and they don’t feel it’s fair. Their complaining will not interfere with your usual usage of the website—you can still pre-order the expansion from the site store or the Gem Store.

First of all, I am also a bit concerned about having to buy the base game a second time. I don’t see the utility for us, veteran players.
Second, I’m not annoyed by the price. After all, we paid $60 for the base game and, without gems (I consider this a caprice), you just bought a game to play for $0.058 per day (around 1030 days). We could also calculate a per hour price, but that varies way too much ^^ So paying $75 to $100 for the expansion that, I assume, would be better than the base game, and since I know I’m gonna play hours and hours in the upcoming months, that’s ok.
Why didn’t I say “paying $45 to $100”? Because it’s basic marketing.
There was an experience going to same way. A tiny popcorn bucket was sold at $1 and a 5x bigger one was sold at $5. People went for the tiny, because they didn’t need the big one.
After that, they added a $3.5 bucket that had roughly 30% more than the $1 popcorn. Result ? People thought it was better to buy the $5 because they had way more popcorn for barely more bucks.
That’s how it’s done here too: normal version seems useless, deluxe version seems a bit too expensive for what it sells, so ultimate seems the fairest price/content option. ^^
Anyway, I don’t mind what people think, I trust ANet on this one, and I’m buying the game with my eyes closed. As a console gamer, I used to buy $60 games every other month. Now I have bought games in ages xD So after all the hours I’ve spent (and that I will also spend) here on GW2/HoT, it’s really cheap.

Well, game prices have gone up a lot in couple of years. Heck, people pay 70-90 Euros for GTAV without complaining or 50-60 Euros for some FPS games that they play for 10 hours. So yeah, price is fine.
No, its not.
Companies just know that people will pay more for what they want instead of going without, even if it bothers them. So they take advantage of it.
This is being sold for about ten dollars less than what GW 2 cost at release. For not half, not even a quarter of the content. And people are somehow ok with that because its “the standard”.

Can someone explain to me why the standard edition of HoT isn’t coming with a character slot if we are getting a new class?
Because they are trying to push you toward the $75 option. They could easily sell a version with no core game + heart of thorns and one character slot for $40-$45 but they won’t do it because money.

Look at the cache…they changed the FAQ mere hours before announcing preorders. It’s a bait-and-switch.
That … is not a bait-and-switch.
A bait and switch would be saying that buying the expansion gives the core game (for players who don’t already have it) and not giving it to them when they actually buy it. A bait and switch would be saying they’re giving a free character slot for the $75 edition, but not actually giving it when bought.
A bait and switch would be promising something that’s set in stone, and not delivering. The FAQ change is something that wasn’t set in stone. It’s obvious that the core game is needed to play the expansion, so the previous FAQ reflected that. The new FAQ reflects the change (the fact that the FAQ changed hours before the announcement doesn’t matter – it just means people weren’t combing the FAQs to predict that buying HoT would include the core game) when they announced the pre-purchase: buying the expansion gives you the base game for free (for new players).
Plain and simple.

I just hope there’s an expansion price for people who already OWN the game, why they had a popup in-game for players who already have the game is beyond me, that one should have shown the expansion price (without the price for the full game since I already own it). This is just an expansion, like Eye of the North, EoTN didn’t include the base game, Factions did but it also had 2 character slots and 2 new professions. HoT is not that type of expansion, it’s a simple content expansion that simply adds the areas and a lot of features we had in gw1 maguuma area… I would have prepurchased at $30 but at $50 I’d rather get a full game and wait on HoT until it was on sale.
At this price I’ll be getting Fallout4 instead of an expansion.
$49.99 is the Price of just the Expansion. The Core Game is an extra bonus for new players and they get it for free. This was already verified by Anets Twitter.
It’s $50 for the game+expansion, or just the expansion of you paid for the game, no matter how you try to spin it. Basically, you get less for more if you’re a loyal customer. It’s a ripoff based on that alone.
So comparing veterans to newcomers, veterans paid $50 3 years earlier than new comers and thus had access to 3 years of gameplay that the newcomers missed out on. You paid $50 at launch for the base game and had access ever since. You will even have a leg up on them forever for anniversary stuff. What else do you want?
Minimum? A character slot to try the new profession.
and you’re some how entitled to those things?
Compared to how GW1 Expansions worked asking for just a ONE Free Character Slot isn’t asking much at all and one would think would be standard.
on what grounds would that be standard? if you been playing since pre launch like me you have had three years to hit maximum character slots on your account either through grinding gold for gems or just paying the 10 bucks it cost again i ask on what grounds is any current player entitled to extra character slots?
Because ever Guild Wars 1 Expansion gave you 2 Free Character Slot. 1 for each new class it added. You got every Character Slot? Good for you I don’t.
firstly gw1 was a 10 year old game and is not gw2. secondly that’s nobody’s fault but your own. they don’t owe you more character slots than you have earned already or paid for.
Is*. GW1 still exists, and many people, including myself, still play it, because it is an amazing game.
Second, how does the age of a game factor into this argument at all? Anet is still the developer for both GW1 and GW2, and the set the precedent for what is acceptable in GW1.
Whether you like it or not, that carries over. People are right to expect, at the very least, an extra character slot included in the price. I’d argue two, as what has been revealed of HoT so far doesn’t even come close to warranting the standalone price it has.

Simple problem with a simpler solution:
Delete an underused alt. I did. Killed my mesmer today because I wanted that slot for the new profession.
If this were a sub-based game, I could understand the frustration. But it’s not. You buy the game and play. You have the option of using the gem store for things, but it IS an option.
unacceptable
simplest solution:
farm 150g and convert to gems

See, personally I feel like sub fees are a terrible idea and I wouldn’t touch a game that had sub fees. So maybe what you’re saying means something to people coming from other MMOs, but as someone coming from other types of video game it feels like you’re saying “this is the sort of game you’d like to play, so the price is reasonable.”
And that doesn’t make much sense to me. Also, ending what you say with “nuff said” sounds like you treating your opinion as fact and trying to shut down different opinions.

bought Guild Wars 2 Digital Deluxe Edition for $44.99 in 2013
now needing to buy it again and only getting it as standard edition+HoT
is a slap in the face.
in other words im buying GW2 all over again not needing it since i already have it just to get HoT? even if i would be ok with the price and getting the core game once again i only have HoT once. so if i wanted to use the new core game as 2nd account or give it away would i not be needing to buy HoT again? so no matter what i always got a core game without HoT it seems. and standard edition is not getting even a character slot for the veterans ?
in short if i did not start playing 2 years ago and just get the standart edition now i pay 50 bucks for HoT and core game.
but since i and the rest of the veteran players bought it a long time ago we are getting punished in buying the core game twice wich is roughly 100 bucks and we are ending up with 2 core games and 1 HoT.
in other words im not ok how the veterans are getting treated for all the new players it is a great price as a bundle (core+HoT).

on what grounds is any current player entitled to extra character slots?
They are not entitled to an extra character slot.
They are entitled to ask for an extra character slot to be included in the price of the expansion.
They are entitled to allow the lack of an extra character slot to influence their decision on whether or not to buy the expansion.
+1
Without the extra character slot I can’t access as huge part of HoT’s content, content I am supposed to pay 45€ for. That just doesn’t make any sense to me.
Drop the price of HoT (without the base game) to 30€ and inlcude a free character slot and I will throw more money at you. Keep it like it currently is and I wont.

Well, whether or not $50 is fine depends on the content. And, so far, HoT doesn’t seem to provide much extra content, especially when you consider that you have to pay extra to play the new profession.

Mmmm… okay, we paid 50 bucks for GW 2 when it first came out. But HoT is an EXPANSION… not a separate game in and of itself, it is a continuation to an existing story. To set the price on an expansion for 50 dollars… obviously some… find questionable and objective. What makes it worse is, many of us already own GW 2, to we have no need to purchase the Core, yet we did, we had to. We had no choice. But it’s not a Core we get to play, it’s not a separate account, it’s being overlapped by the game account we already own, so fine…
Some people say – Forget about the core, you bought the Expansion. (For… 50 bucks? I can pay two month’s worth of water bills for that price and it’s not even a full standalone campaign) – but an expansion.
I would just really like to know what my money is paying for in this. What am I getting that makes the price tag worth it? That’s all.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: upsdn.5426
Here’s why it doesn’t matter what the price is:
- Pre-order sales are a bad business practice to support. Any person who has played games for long enough should know better at this point. Since this is a game that is digitally delivered, there aren’t limited numbers of copies. Don’t support pre-ordering, as it is an inherently anti-consumer practice.
(…)
TL ; DR : Preorder price doesn’t matter because you shouldn’t preorder.
This, 100%. I said this earlier while playing. One of those things about U.S. consumers I will never understand is their eagerness to give money early for a product they won’t see until later. In many cases, they pay much more to “pre-order” than they would pay by purchasing the same product on the launch date. (Usually there is some kind of nominal “perq” that comes with the pre-order, but let’s be realistic: it’s just there to make you feel like the pre-order is worth it. If you feel that way, then they succeeded in manipulating you and you are a typical consumer. cough $50 worth of gems cough)

Nightfall and factions had entire new continents worth of maps; a full game’s worth of new skills. Those were worth full price.
HoT looks like an expansion — and is being called an expansion. So why isn’t it priced as an expansion? I will wait to buy until it goes down to a more reasonable price — assuming GW2 still keeps my interest by that time.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I think the bigger issue is it appears the amount of content doesn’t justify the price tag. That’s more of a marketing and promotion problem than anything. If the public saw a huge amount of content, I would bet you wouldn’t hear these complaints.
But, for right now, the content appears to be around three or four Living Story updates with a new class. The rest is gravy with updates to skills and the like.
That’s a problem and a reason for the unhappiness on the forums. I’ll not get into that business about repaying for something we’ve already bought. Double-dipping doesn’t even begin to cover that.
If they charge the price of a full retail game, I want the content of a full retail game.
I want story, dungeons, new maps, and armour (that isn’t kitten-flung micro transaction gemstore bullkitten).
…. Anet screwed the pooch hardcore this time.

It is not the $50 price that’s not passing. It is the fact that they are boosting the price by giving you a new copies of the base GW2 game(which most vets will never use) without giving you an option to buy Heart of thorns only.
Also, $50 is steep for what we are getting, compared to what we got for Factions and Nightfall. (Two new classes, hundreds of new skills, dozen of new elite skills, two new entire continents, new elite areas, two character slots, more than one new pvp mode, 30+ story missions with the two games combined etc, for $45 each

Guys can you chill for a sec and think about this? Yah the prices are high. Yeah your not getting a character slot for 50$. But has anyone thought on buying the game with Ingame currency, I think most of you have loads of gold already specialy veterans as myself, yeah new players are a bit left out on this but by the time they finish the core game content they and us could just farm the game and buy it out in the gemstore and you do not have to pay a dime for it. Have anyone figured this is feasible??! What I see is this: 1. incomers pay the game for 50$ you get the expansion and the base game, 2. people that just bought the game few days ago , play the game learn to master it , buy the expansion thru the gemstore. 3. Veterans, you guy probably have loads of gold by now ,so why not buy the game thru the gemstore instead of 50$? And those that doesnt have the necesarry gold yet, just go farming there’s plenty of time before the expansion release. Before go ranting at me hear this , the expansion is somewhat free if you just play the game and its content. And if you dont want to farm then stop playing the game already, all end game content is about farming anyway. For those that knows what im talking about good luck farming and have your music its going to be a long ride.

The only arguments supporting the price ive seen is
1. $50 is standard for MMO DLC
2. $50 is not that much
seriously those are the only 2 arguments and are easily beaten back by arguing logic.

Your whining is an example to us all Rylen, I am sure it will motivate us all to continue whining about things we care about, just like you.
I’m not whining, my post was to get people to stop whining by seeing that the price is reasonable and there is no need for QQ
In itself is is whining, you are no better than those you complain about.
