We are paying $50 for 0 levels, 0 races, 1 profession, 9 sets of new skills (guessed 54-69 skills) 1 storyline, 0 dungeon, 1 region which includes 1 maps, and ‘all open betas’. That is HoT pre-purchase and what we know.
Price is basically the same, content is not.
1 region which includes 3 maps (You forgot Drytop and Silverwaste.)
My guess was that the pricing also included these 2 “free” maps. They are just trying to get back the money they spend on them.

like i said they are a business they need to make money somehow even if its by less than perfect methods they are a small business not a multi million dollar corporation they cant afford to be giving stuff away for free the fact that they gave the core game away its risky and unprofessional but it was necessary and simple solution to this problem if your unwilling to pay the price don’t buy the game

I don’t understand how you can’t see the reason behind the complains.
They are old players, they had 3 years of entertainment, sure, but they also supported the game for 3 years, there are people who sent hundreds if not thousands of dollars in gem.
They can at least expect to be treated equally as the new comers, but not worse….
and there are also players who bought this game not long ago, because Anet clearly indicated that you need to buy the core game to buy the expansion, says woodenpotato, and now you basically get it for free and for who ever bought the game hearing that you need to buy the core game to buy expansion are screwed, which is a new low in business standard
it’s just fail business practice and a lose-lose result even tho the intention is to do good, but it got directed in the wrong direction

I am on the an extra char slot or 800 Gems for those who already had the base game option. Or give the char slot or Gems to everybody and give something like a title and a skin/outfit/mini for those that already had the base game; Just something to say yeah we remember you.
Oh and a sale on char slots would be nice. Reduced price during the pre-purchase period, add a limit of 1 or 2 at the reduced price if you like.
Now onto the head in the cloud portion of this post:
Personally I think the price should have been lower, but lowering the price now would cause too many problems. I also don’t think it would have hurt to give the dollar amount of gems with the expansion and game considering how quickly gems can be spent, and aNet looses very little. But I don’t actually expect it to happen or many to agree with that point; I am not willing to go through all the car dealer and other analogies defending it (rolls eyes).

I Think it is funny that they are have yet to even acknowledge our concerns.
poor move on Arena net
the longer they let us stew in our anger the worse it will get…. but they are a company not logical…
This is a tempest in a tea pot compared to what’s brewing for the 6-23 patch.
i really dont think thats true. we have known for a while what is coming 6-23
this is a massive bomb dropped on the community, and numerous issues not being addressed by the company .
I wish I had your optimism.
It is not optimism, its realism.
you are telling me that a few potential balancing issues is going to rip up the community more then the company lying to its consumers and then trying to cover it up by changing information.
you are the optimist for thinking something so trivial would distract from a major breach of trust.
It’s not just balance issues. It’s a new extremely restrictive rework of the entire trait system.
I do agree that the lying/false advertisement are more severe problems. But the upcoming update will have a noticeable impact on every active player. This mess with HoT preorders isn’t hard to overlook if for those with no intention of preordering.

So abuse customers, sorry your logic isn’t good. They can find ways to sell product through, i dunno, making gem store items worth something? I know it sounds crazy but they actually added a MT store which could potentially add revenue. The more you know.

Its hard to notice…. WE NEED TO RAGE LOUDER THEN!!!!
but really ill be honest, if they just dropped elite specializations from HoT and added it as free content with normal specializations id be content and my rage would instantly dissipate

I want a char slot minimum. Remember, we paid twice what new users do. The just option would be more slots than 2, but I expect next to nothing from this developer now.
$40 average for someone that didnt grab it on kitten sale.
$50 for the expansion.
$90 vs $50.
The only advantage a user who purchased the game recently has is a little extra time. As it stands I lose a toon if I upgrade if I want access to the primary content of the new game, the new class and its pathways.

If they add a slot the purchase would be a nobrainer to me. Without it´s just a rip-off EA-STYLE….
I don´t wanna pay for the failure of Wildstar and those other kittenty NC games…
Ive never seen something of this low character before, not even from EA. Ive never seen a map pack for example where you’d have to delete access to another map from a prior game. You have to pay extra to not lose content you paid $40 for already. Gross.

So I can’t call you out on what you make yourself out to be, but you can? Nice double standard.
I’ll take any insults you have to throw at me. I’m used to much worse, honestly.
It has to do with the people I deal with on a daily basis. I just don’t whine about it like you. I tell people what they don’t want to hear, but at least I’m honest. Maybe too honest. Better than being a liar.“Remember Champ, you attacked me to begin with … "
Nice passive aggression. I attacked your ‘argument’, not you. But what kind of people make these arguments? The ones I described. I see them everywhere, and they hate people attacking their precious companies.
Don’t forget: you look as bad to me as I do to you.If you have a further problem with me, take it to PMs.
Ha! No you really didn’t attack the argument, not at all. I’ve no need to insult you, I don’t get my feathers all ruffled up over forum .. discussions? ( I don’t think that’s what this was)
I’ve no special love for Anet, so kindly don’t lump me into that category. You can assume what you like of me, I’m sure that’s another fallacy I’m unfamiliar with as well.
P.S – I’m waiting to prepurchase too.

abuse hahahah that was funny last i checked you were the one whining about a game abuse is not that they can trample over us if they wanted but they dont and the fact they’ve broken no laws business wise or otherwise means they can do as they please
The 6 months of telling us that we needed to buy the core game separately before buying HoT looks a lot like false advertisement, which I do believe there are laws against.
They were using false pretenses to sell copies of the core game. Even going so far as to have special sale discounts marketed as getting ready for HoT.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Its an easy fix. The starter pack just has to offer the base game OR 800 gems along with the HoT expansion(Keeping in mind that the other two packages are the starter PLUS stuff so its for all of them really).
Everyone wins, no one has to refund anything, anet dosent have to pay money. Its that simple.. 800 gems.
The sad part is it would make far better sense for a newer user to simply have an alt version of the game with HoT and one without it. I have no idea if that is against the rules or not as I havent considering doing it but realistically what benefit is there to upgrading.
You LOSE character slots lol (opportunity cost), and if you are new you also lose (opportunity cost) the daily and chest farming capacity of 10 accounts. If you simply start a new account you get all that HoT has to offer, lose nothing since you have so little (being new) and you gain 5 slots. What possible benefit for a pre-HoT new user to GW2 is upgrading? Unless having 2 game copies is against the rules even the account-bound stuff cant add up to the daily farming capacity of 10 toons.

It is false advertisement, remember Red Bull? Even an asinine case such as “it doesnt actually give wings” is valid depending on the state it is filed in. If the suit is filed by a Californian then it could be valid.

What bothers me is the above mentioned “Batteries not included” aspect. They have hyped the new class but if I want to play it i have to spend an additional $10 for a character slot.
There are the other issues about the value of content and what-not but for me that is not as big an issue as selling an expansion that then requires an additional expansion to utilize the content advertized!
I will state for the record that the addition of 800 gems, the cost of a character slot, for existing accounts would be a fine resolution and if this happens I will buy the pre-order despite the other reservations I have.
It then becomes a matter of Anet convincing the majority that the new content is worth the $50 price tag, which for some of us, apparently, will take some doing.
Batteries not included is a good example, but its actually worse since you lose time invested in your toon that gets deleted to access content you paid for. Whereas a couple AAs could cost like $5, you lose more than $5 worth of time.

It’s the fault of the company telling it. When it comes to disclosure of cost/products offered/requirements of products, they have a legal obligation to be honest.
This isn’t a case is misinterpretation or vague statements. It was a clearly posted lie that was exploited for financial gains.

Actually, I won’t. I will wait till HoT is cheap on a reseller site and open an alt account since I dont want to delete a toon OR I may end up liking BDO which goes into open beta soon, orr I may take Heavensword for a spin. I, and many others, are not addicted to GW2. Its just an MMO that I like, one of several. One that is disrespecting its consumers.

Don’t worry bout him, he’s one of those “paid mod whiners will never succeed” types. Their qq threads when Valve pulled it due to the PR damage were delicious. They are just noise. Perhaps this problem needs to be addressed similarly with a petition, its already had a remarkable effect once this year perhaps its time to do it again.

I’m most certainly not buying it under the current terms. I’ll reconsider that if the packages offered are changed to include some additional value, more so for existing players that aren’t getting a “free core game” copy. Otherwise, if I purchase HoT it will later, at a reduced price.

I know you must be young, since you have demonstrated no knowledge of how advertisement laws work. Go ask your mom or dad what fraud is, and perhaps sit on their lap and read some sites that documented the recent Red Bull case since it had a lot of publicity. Maybe some day in an econ class you will write a paper about it.

To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.
It WAS stated in the FAQ that players would be required to buy the base game in order to use Heart of Thorns. Now that FAQ was changed at the last day right as HoT pre-orders go live. So all those players that bought the game back when the game was 75% Off, didn’t need to buy the game back then. This is why a lot of people are kittened off. We want our $10 back!!!

Once you’ve made a claim like that, and used it to sell a product, you’re stuck with it. They should have thought their plans through before decided to make that claim.
When you’re selling a product and taking money from people, you don’t get to “oops, I changed my mind” like a child. That is why there are laws that explicitly prohibit this behavior.

I’ve never posted on a game’s official forum before, and with a thread this populated I’m not sure I’ll even be read, but I feel pretty strongly here so I’m taking the time to post.
I have no problem with paying $50 for an expansion; in fact I bought the deluxe edition of GW2 and was planning on doing that for HoT. I’m fortunate in that the cost of video games isn’t really material to me. My issue right now is that If I buy a deluxe version it needs to be because I want to support the game, not because I feel forced to.
Like many players, I have no open slots. I bought three and I’m now 8/8 (one of each class.) That effectively sets the price of the expansion to $60 for me, because one of the features I’m most excited about is the new class.
It feels like an exploitation of my goodwill the way things are priced. I look at the three tiers, and it feels like I’m being forced towards a higher tier just because I’ve played and supported the game up to this point. That is something I am not ok with.
I see other concerning behaviours, like the fact that the base game was essentially put on a fire sale for quick cash before being bundled with HoT. This doesn’t directly effect me, and I won’t be so selfish as to be upset that others are getting the base game for free. I do feel bad for the people who bought the game 1-3 months ago thinking they needed it for the expansion and are now caught in a rough place. They were also mislead by a FAQ that was ninja-edited by ArenaNet. This is not the sort of behaviour I’ve come to expect from company that historically has valued it’s player base.
The result for me has been I’ve decided not to pre-purchase HoT, and will likely wait for a price drop before picking up the standard edition. I’m pretty shocked because before the announcement I was confident I would instantly order the deluxe edition.

Then In this case you apologize & propose reimboursement/deal for anyone that has buyed the game before the ordeal.
You don’t ninja-edit the FAQ, put a m************ to every existing player & then go silent.

I hope TotalBiscuit does a video on this.
Anyways, I think the most level-headed proposal is the obvious character slot and some gems for previous owners, at least 800 gems to make up for us being lied to. Or else I am basically forced to make an alt as the opportunity cost of 5 slots is too much.

I love this game just as much as the rest of you guys. As much as I think the price is a tad high, I have to look back at the history of this company and recognize they have worked hard to foster a culture of listening to the voice of their players and caring about the quality of what they give us. Now, no-subscription-fees is a must for the future of MMOs. However they have to pay all those amazing employees who use their creativity, imagination and ingenuity to create a game I play all the time. I trust they struggled to find the best price for this expansion and either they have their reasons (such as they need to pay their employees) or they made a mistake. Either way they are listening to us and I know they will try and find a balance that in the end supports the future of this game! (cause I can’t wait to explore the jungle by glider!! EEEK!)

No, they arent listening to us. Not yet. I was in the beta, what I saw of Maguuma was somewhat “EEK” but at the cost of a character slot and forfeit of dignity, nah. Black Desert has a clean slate, and Heavensword is on sale. I hope Anet fixes this by the time the Steamsale ends.

Sorry but the tear machine dried.
Anet marketing/whoever it was have done his job very poorly.
They lost my trust, now they will face the consequence.
I’m not going to condone neglect & breach of trust toward customer for any reason.
Bad commercial behavior are to be punished, period.

New players get a very good deal. I would buy it, if i was a new player. To get a whole new game for $50 + the expansion. Seems normal.
But i’m not a new player. And now it seems that it is always better to be a newcommer, than a veteran. Feels wrong. Like we all left behind and forgotten.
For anyone who saying about “supporting game by this price” – i supported game all the time by buying gems on regular basis. Didn’t realy need them, bought specialy to support Anet. And now Anet says to me “We don’t care. Your fault you are not a new player.”

while the concern is appreciated i have a plan of what i wish to with my life im just waiting for the moment to implement it
I wish you the all the best, and am happy that you have a plan. I just kind of knocked about, but in the end it all worked out. Could have skipped some of it without regret though.
life is like that though we may be knocked about we always end up stronger because of it

I already have the game. Do I get a second one? Can I purchase the expansion without having to buy the game that I already own again?
ok here’s what to do. Pre purchase HoT on a new account, transfer all your money and sell everything from your old account to the new one. ask your guild to invite the new account. Delete all your characters and make them on the new one so you keep the funny names. Sell your old GW2 account that’s rank 80 in PvP and rank 50 fractals with 4 sets of ascended gear and 8 ascended weapons, 9 character slots and 5 bank tabs for $150.
Congrats you made $100 got both GW2 and the expansion and created a great way to rediscover the Universe of GW2 by leveling all 8 classes again.
also this is sarcasm. you can do it but i just wrote it to point out how dumb the price with GW2 included.

I had to think about this for a while, look back on some things and will try to form this in the right words.
I came from World of Warcraft. I bought the deluxe versions of Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor. $70 for each plus tax. Of course, you needed previous versions to play the game. If you bought the standard version and decided hey, I want to by the Deluxe version, you could at a discounted price. The standard version is $50.
With the lull in content from World of Warcraft, I went to Elder Scrolls Online. $60 plopped for the Explorer Edition in Wal-mart because that was all I could find. I do enjoy the cloth map. I did the upgrade to the Imperial edition for $20 more.
I do go back to both those games. The main reason I left is mostly I got burnt out. Lulls in content and the subscription fees (before ESO when B2P) were the main reasons. A friend bought me Guild Wars 2 as a birthday gift. I truly like this game. If either WoW or ESO had the community online that this game does, I would never have given this game a shot. I was extremely excited for this expansion but the pre-order makes me back up.
I can understand wanting to get new players in but packaging the standard pre-order as this is strange. Sure the expac is $50, I’m not gonna really dispute the price. That’s average. What am I gonna do with a free copy of a game I already have? I can’t gift it. Everyone I know that plays video games already has it. I probably can’t sell the code because it is tied into the expansion, which is what I want to buy in the first place. So I’m stuck. I don’t want deluxe or ultimate. The extra slot isn’t much of an appeal neither are the shinies attached to it. Beta access has always been meh to me, same as the title. I would probably never use either one of them. Now the doubt sets in on if I even want to buy the expansion. What if there will not be an option after release of expac only?
So please consider doing a standard edition for existing players. Give us a choice and add that to the other standard edition, along with deluxe and ultimate so they don’t get left out. Have two versions, one for new players with a choice of a cash shop item. One for existing players, sans the free copy of the base game, with a choice of a cash shop item. Have the cash shop item be one of the permanent gathering tools. Maybe make a vendor in Lion’s Arch that excepts special ‘Thorn’ tickets to redeem with the purchase of the expansion and we can choose whether we want a permanent axe, sickle or pick. It would be at least a small resolution to those that want to support the game but may not have the funds or an interest in the shinies on the deluxe and ultimate versions.

they have told us its for new players many times now but were too much in a rage to care they need to get money somehow obviously you don’t know how much a video game costs to make and the matter of transparency hah you don’t know business then they don’t have to tell us anything they could say oh yes this will happen and not give jack crap about what we say the fact Anet does care is that they are the rare exception to big business
Fanbase > Income > Anet
Must I say more. Your statement is ignorant and preposterous! Businesses, whether big or small, MUST listen to it’s fanbase if they are to make an income. That’s where all their money comes from.
Sure Anet could treat it’s customers like you stated but they would only become a mocked version of EA or Ubisoft and would lose the fanbase they have today.

If they add a slot the purchase would be a nobrainer to me. Without it´s just a rip-off EA-STYLE….
I don´t wanna pay for the failure of Wildstar and those other kittenty NC games…Ive never seen something of this low character before, not even from EA. Ive never seen a map pack for example where you’d have to delete access to another map from a prior game. You have to pay extra to not lose content you paid $40 for already. Gross.
EAnet……………………..
EAnet…. indeed.
You broke the code.
I guess Anet was too good to be true. Why isnt GW2 on Origin?
