It’s obvious they don’t have a head for business. If I was running that place and I had 300 plus people working on a project for a year, I would be handing it out for free (like some vets have said) or give massive discounts to everyone. Amazing how people cannot grasp that this is an MMO, they have to pay bills people. 50 bucks every 3 years is CHEAP for an MMO. If you are seriously that cheap for the constant updates (we had 2 seasons of the living story for free, which caused changes to the map that are NOT cheap to make). The original game was already more than any one off title had. You cannot PvP/WvW or the like in a sRPG…and they cost more.

It’s probably their first MMO, or game rather, and they didn’t know that expansions cost money.

ANet just lost a sale until it’s 10 bucks or whatever.

The $10 sales from ArenaNet will never happen again. A new expansion would be near by the time it even got to 50% off. They may however open up HoT to everyone for free with the next expansion, if you want to wait ~3 years.

They could actually keep the price at a stable $50 for the remainder of the game’s life. The heroic edition was released to keep the price of the original game higher. They could do the same by including season 3 and so on with HoT. Doing this would create a mess for other retailers however, so they’ll probably just discount the price, which will end up costing you more if you want the story.

I have no idea how they manage to stay afloat if they aren’t going to give their work away.

But that was the original plan. No expansions. Instead, free content updates to evolve the world over time, to simulate a living world. The living story failed at marketing however whereas an expansion is obviously superior in that aspect.

I loved GW1 and was super hyped for GW2, which turned out to be a huge disappointment for me, since it wasn’t even close to what I expected. So I haven’t really played much of it, and mostly endured for as long as I did because a friend was really into it.

Now it seems like HOT might address some of the issues I had with GW2, like the action camera controls, so maybe I should jump back in. Cool… Whelp, the core game is now f2p and all the features I would ever need are now available for free.

Why exactly did I waste $50 and bought this thing again? Not to mention the game includes a cash shop and is selling the episodic story to you separately (I haven’t logged in for over a year for obvious reasons). And now they’re expecting me to cough up another $50 without even acknowledging my purchase 3 years ago. My account will be worth jack kitten in three days. Yay.

Perhaps it’ll be better to wait for the second expansion and buy it on a sale, so I wont feel like I’m wasting my money again.

Wasted your money how exactly? You have had 3 years of playing this game. You chose not to play it yet you could still log in and play it at ANY time free of charge, and can even continue to do so!

Let us put this in terms these complainers can understand as they seem to lack a grasp of MMOs.

You bought this game when it was released. So like buying any stand alone RPG. Only you got to interact with others and receive free content (living story seasons 1 and 2) so long as you logged in and continued to experience it. It cost you nothing beyond that first purchase.
Now the base game is going f2p, but the f2p crowd gets far less, you who bought the game get to keep all your perks they don’t have (such as extra free bag slots, more initial character slots, larger initial bank, access to guild banks, etc).

Now HoT, think of this as a MASSIVE DLC like every modern RPG has these days to expand on the story and content. It is extra stuff, with some pretty good content and perks, changes to the classes, etc. If you want access to it, you have to buy the DLC, or you make do without it. This also means not being able to access new areas and new content with friends.

If I knew that the game would go f2p in 3 years I wouldn’t have spent money on it. I expected things to remain as they were in GW1. I bought the game, so I earned my place in it even 10 years after.

But now I’ve spent $50 for nothing. The “I bought the game” perks mean absolutely nothing to me as I’m not much of a crafting and trading guy. I want to experience the story and combat. I can do that now by creating a new free account and I wont miss a thing.

I was hoping they would address my main concerns with the game a few years down the line, so I wasn’t particularly upset about not enjoying the game so much at the moment. But now it seems I just wasted my money.

You spent 50$ for a game that you can play for 3 years, and you consider all that time to be a waste? if that even 1% true, you not be here complaining, you be pff somewhere else. 50$ for 3 years, that what i call a bargin. there are bad games out there now that you can beat in 6 hours after paying 60$ and people buy them. You payed $50, and got (i forget the number said) 24 major updates, on top of all the free support for then. Almost every other mmo would have charcge you an extra 15$ a month.
BTw, everything you earn in 3 years, 50% of that most likely can not be earned by F2p people, and the rest is so restritied, that I am glad i bought the game.

There seems to be a case of the Stockholm Syndrome going around.
Yes, the base game is going F2P. Yes, they will have fewer perks than existing core game owners.
In this, there is also a marketing trick to make it appear as if core game owners are dealt a better hand, between the two lower tiers, when, instead, they get a slap on the wrist.

The expansion is presented as an upgrade, yet there is no initiative to thank faithful players or welcome back retired players—many of which have not only bought the core game, but pumped money into it through micro-transactions.

The expansion is not a separate game, so pretending that the years of gameplay—which people have paid for—make up for being ignored (read: screwed over) at this juncture, is a good ol’ case of kidding yourselves.

They been doing stuff for free for 3 years, I am not sure what else you need for a ty, to be truthful.
Also, micro transaction should count for 0. You donated to the game, because there was no subscription, you payed them extra because you felt like it, that they deserve it, and you even got a bonus item from it. Saying you deserve more because you buy gems is just wrong to me.

As you can see I haven’t played for more than a few weeks and that’s nothing by mmo standards. I haven’t even finished the story because I got bored of it. I was hoping thing would improve… and by the looks of thing they did, but sadly I’d have the same amount of enjoyment if I made a new account now… for free.

I just feel disappointed and a little but betrayed, that’s all. I don’t think I’ll be buying anything from Anet at full price again.

I can honestly say I have spent maybe 20$ over the past 3 years, + 50$ for the core game + 100$ for ultimate edition of the expansion. That being said, I have no problems buying the expansion. I went out of my way to work some OT and make the extra 50$ to pay for ultimate. Why? Because I feel all the content and enjoyment I have gotten in the past 3 years has more than been worth an additional 50$ from me. I don’t feel like I have been screwed over. Look at every other game with expansions, are the core games still worth 50$? No.

Let’s look at WoW since it has the most expansions to show degrade in costs and free. WoW now offers every current expansion up to Warlords of Draenor + core game for 40-50$ which is pretty much the same thing GW2 is doing. But you don’t see everyone and their mom saying, “OH WELL I PAID $50 FOR MY GAME!”. It comes down to a lot of spoiled children angry they paid more money. The same decrease in price applies to pretty much anything you buy. Buy a game the day it comes out 50/60$ (depending if PC/Console) then 3 years later game is worth 10$, does that mean anyone who bought the original freaks out? No. And let’s look at TV’s. Say you buy a 42" LCD and it costs you 500$. Say I go for the same TV a year or 2 later and it’s only 300$. You going to still be mad I paid less? No. People need to stop being mad about people getting the core game free and only spending 50$ on the expansion.

ArenaNet has employees to pay and they have to pay for servers, techs, and for them to keep making content they need to have jobs for those people to do. I also think of this as a long-term investment. Maybe not everyone does, but in the 3 years I got (and counting) off the core game, I am more than happy to invest into 3 more. And let’s not forget that all the first time events (Karka Lag-fest!) and rewards will never be obtainable by them. New players never got to know Old Lion’s Arch, they never saw Scarlet, they are probably still unaware of what’s going on in Living Season 2. They don’t know the struggles with dungeons at launch when they were super difficult, the world boss revamp when Tequatl first got updated, they won’t have all the achievement points we do. And the AP might seem stupid to some, but some of those skins are pretty awesome (especially those 26k+ AP weapon skins that a lot of people are closing in on), the gold, account buffs, and even gems and titles. Ultimately, new players will not get all the joy we’ve had over the past 3 years, but all of us can enjoy the game together for the next 3 and help GW2 community continue to grow.

Micro transactions are extra, you are on your own there. No one forced you to it, your “thank you” is extra stuff people who didn’t do that can’t have. No, Stockholm Syndrome would have you saying you would like to pay 250 bucks for what is only 50 bucks of game. So many do not understand that syndrome and use it so foolishly, nigh always in conversations that aren’t even have tertiary involvement.
How have you been ignored? Oh, forget all the updates? The living story seasons? Right…free content you didn’t have to pay for (living story came about AFTER event tweaks and attempts at changing events to keep interest which was all they originally had planned as it was all the living story was supposed to be, dynamic events that changed rather than a true continuous story…so many forget this). You haven’t been ignored…you either chose to ignore the living story content (by not playing at all or staying in sPvP/WvW) or you chose to play it and felt entitled to it.

As for GW1 talk, this is EXACTLY like GW1!!
GW1 had expansion you HAD to buy if you wanted access to new classes, or new skills. Otherwise you would end up fighting against these new classes and skills with only your old skills available (which typically meant you lacked proper counters for the new classes too). The base game for GW1 actually did go down severely in price when they released their first expansion, went down even sharper when the second hit, and by the 3rd you could buy the whole bundle of them for the cost of the original game.

So referencing GW1 shows you don’t know what you are talking about in referencing past business practices. Yes, it never went free, but the base game cost so little it was as good as free…something you could grab without even a thought to cost. Before the last expansion GW1 cost the same as a pack of cigarettes for crying out loud.

I think it’s interesting that so many people remember GW2 being $50. It actually launched at $60. There was a price drop in early 2013 putting it at $50. My point is that prices go down over time. While there wasn’t another price drop until HoT pre-puchase went up, the game had been on sale many times. I know the game had been on sale for $25 and then $10 several times. IIRC, there was a sale price between $50 and $25, but I was taking a break during that time period.

There was a gradual progression over 3 years from $60 to F2P. It’s not like the games where you paid $60, paid a subscription each month, and then the game goes F2P a single year after release.

While it’s true that GW1 never went F2P, prices did go down significantly over time. I bought GW Complete with all campaigns and expansion for $40.

I wouldn’t compare it to wow, because the expansion price there seems somewhat negligible considering you need to pay a monthly subscription. And it wasn’t always like that, but wow’s dying and buying 6 games would probably be too much for any new players. Also their expansions introduce whole new continents, while this seems more like a major patch (gw2.1).

The tv analogy is also misguided. I wouldn’t mind if my accounts value dropped by 50%, heck I’m more than fine with sales. However my account will be worth nothing in 3 days. I wouldn’t be able to sell it if I wanted to (I don’t and never intended to as I realise it’s probably against the TOS).

I pre-ordered the core game and after my initial disappointment stopped playing and hoped for things to get better. I didn’t get any of that joy you experienced in three years. So, where’s my value?

I think they could do something extra for existing customers. I’m not talking major discounts or anything like that or even that the bonuses should stack after more expansions come out, heck 5€ off would probably be enough if you already bought the game previously. Sure some people got a char slot, but I’m most certainly not pre-ordering the game that burned me 3 years ago. It’s not even about the money, but about the feeling of not being a milk cow.

Expansions are primarily purchased by their existing player base. If they gave discounts to existing players then they may as well just make that the new price.

What’s the point of offering a discount or bonus if you won’t find the expansion enjoyable? Whether or not an expansion contains those will not have any bearing on whether you find it enjoyable. If GW2 provided all of these, you’d likely still be where you are now feeling that it wasn’t worth it.

The old GW2 wasn’t very enjoyable. The small “improvements” also didn’t focus on my main grievances. But the new camera and targeting system does bring something to the table which caught my eye. The specializations might also bring some freshness and diversity to classes. I guess they’ll be releasing expansions more often now (hot seems small compared to what factions or nightfall had) and considering how much value a box purchase offers I’ll probably wait till it goes f2p again.

So with the bomb dropped on us today concerning the grind to the new specs, I believe that a pre-order refund should be offered to those who are unhappy with the way HoT is turning out. Anet pushed us into pre-ordering if we want the character slot which should have come with the expansion regardless. Now we find out that elite specs are gated behind 400 points -I know I know we can use the new weapons with the first tier- that we will have to grind for with each alt. So how about it Anet? Please place a cancel pre-order button on our account page.

No it’s not a big deal to you, it’s a rather large deal to everyone who disagrees, which is the majority. (at least in the forum world)

Because 40 HoT hero challenges requires too much effort?

That may or may not be the point for many, it’s also only your opinion which has about as much value as everyone elses opinions including the OP.

What? Did you think it’ll be the same cost as a normal Specialization line? Did you think they would be totally unlocked on day one? Oh no, you will have to work for it.

The cost includes all the new skills as well as traits. And Hero Challenges are 10 HP each.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

It does if most of them will require masteries already.

I absolutely do not understand why anyone in their right mind believed they would just good and done without any effort at all. Especially for Revenants who could not possibly have the benefit of world complete skill points (hero points)

Well to be fair Anet has stated several time that they do not want the new specs to over shadow the old, so why wouldn’t cost the same amount ? Because they labeled it with elite ? It’s a word, nothing more.

Hey look, Random is making up random stats. That’s not actually random at all, and is to be entirely expected.

Which takes too much effort if you want to play HoT content with the new Elite Specs already.

Masteries are account bound and you likely would only need the first tier of each. And possibly depending on the layout of the maps, if you’ve got full map completion of the core maps (at least the hero challenges) you might be able to get away with none (would just need 5 on each map to not require any masteries)..

You buy the pre-order if you are absolutely sure you want HoT.
Pre-purchasing comes with add-ons such as beta access to is exclusive to pre-purchasers, if you’ve tryed the beta in any way with this, you don’t deservse a refund as you’ve used key pre-purchase exclusives.

On the other hand, if your one of those people saying Gw2 has no end-game or there is nothing to do, look no further then the lack of grind we currently have, i’m not supporting grind, but a little grind helps preserve the game.

Considering Verdant Brink HP gives 10 points, this shouldn’t take more then 3 days.
ANet is on the right path.
(Sorry if this sounded harsh, this is but my opinion)

Here is my take on it… for all intents and purposes originally Anet made it sound as if we would get to use elites day 1. Then they said unlock via HP… then silence. NO ONE could have imagined the staggering 400 HP number that got bomb shelled on us today. Counterpoints have been it’s just 40 HP in Maguuma… How many of those you think are locked behind masteries? It could ve a couple of weeks if not more before some people get to play the elites they thought they paid for.

I wont be surprised if next maps are locked behind masteries. That might means more than first tier.

I’d take a look at what the other tiers do. It’s highly unlikely maps will be locked out by masteries above the first tier. I wouldn’t be surprised if sections of a map were blocked off though.

ANet did no such thing. They said Elites are a thing. -how do we get them? We’re changing skill points into hero points, but you won’t be able to fully spec out with HP from leveling, you’ll need to earn the rest by doing the ones in the world. Then you need to do HPs in HoT to get the stuff for elites. -we don’t want to. Ok fine, you can have a full spec from just leveling, but you’ll still have to do HoT stuff to get elites. -COOL, we get to be fully decked out and elite just by leveling to 80! crickets

That’s pretty much how that went. I know it can be hard to remember conversations from half a year ago, but that was the information we actually got.
