We’re going to try to put all the questions about pricing in this one thread.
Please read the FAQ about Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns to get answers to some of the questions, and we’ll have more information in the future.
In the meantime, this is the best thread for posts about pricing, cost, etc.

When did they say that? hope it’s true.
and no way it’s gonna be 50 euros, that’s overpriced for some few nice changes.

I’d pay for the expansion. The content’s worth the money. (We did after all have to in GW1) These guys need to get paid for this great stuff! :-)

I didn’t hear anything about free expansion either. Also pricing would vary from place to place and depending on collectors edition or standard

Full price. This stuff takes a few years to make. Anyone thinking you’re going to get a price break on it… that doesn’t make business sense at all.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Antalore.4206
Yeah if it was free they would have told it by now.
ah, not worth 50 euros for me in case it is the price.

Paid expansion means at least SOME standards of quality, imo.

Q: Is the expansion “buy to play”?
A: Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is a paid expansion to Guild Wars 2, but once you buy it, there are no subscription fees. This means that you can continue playing and access future updates for Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns with no subscription fee.
Oh well….

Only thing free in live is an asskicking. That is an amateurish one, for professional you gotta pay as well;)
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Feothyr.6072
It’s not going to be free.
Will we be able to purchase the expansion from the gem store or only from the site?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I would imagine around £15-£20 after all its a couple of new maps and features.
Its not a full game, think of Eye of The North.

I don’t think we know at this point

More than 20€ is just greedy for 1 map and 1 class
Edit: their expected q3 earnings are 90mil $ right?
so if ppl buy 3 million copies for 30$ a piece = 90 mill $
15€ would be ok price for me.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I am betting 30 bucks for the standard digital copy and 60-70 bucks for Digital Deluxe.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

20-30€ would be insta-buy for me. If it’s more I’ll have to think more about it.

I’m betting on a standard $50 or $60 price-tag.

Will we be able to buy it from the gemstore using gems?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Danikat.8537
They haven’t told us.
My guess is it won’t cost more than a new full game. So about $60/£40.
But that’s just a guess and I think it’s likely to be less than that. But personally I’d rather budget for more than I need and have some left over.

Questions/suggestions not covered there:
1) How will living story be handled going forward of the expansion? Obviously, if it takes place in the new zones, players without the expansion will no longer be getting LS content and that might lead to a bit of frustration amongst players – although I suppose if somehow it still unlocks that story for free and is just unplayable until the expansion is acquired it will alleviate some contention.
2) Will the content be broken up for digital ends – such as pay X gems to unlock the class, Y gems to unlock the area, what-have-you? This way those who are maybe don’t care about the new class, or only about the new class, or whatever have a “as affordable” manner of getting it? It seems like putting things like new classes into the gem store would have been a given I have to admit. This also ties into “just what content is flowing backwards?”
3) Just what content is flowing backwards? If one member of the guild has HoT, does only that play gain access to the guild halls? Can anyone in the guild even contribute to that guild hall given they don’t have access to the content? Likewise, the mastery system – is it released to everyone regardless of it they bought the content? Will we start seeing PCs who hare significantly better from that content looming over those who don’t have it since they never bought the expansion? If you select the new class, will you still be playing the (roughly) exact same starting zones as you would have without the expansion, or is the entire personal story going to be different for them?
4)Since there is a new class, will the expansion be expanding our character slots by one, or will people (like me) who already have 8 or 9 slots filled with characters be forced to shell out even more money or delete a character in order to try the new class out?
These are all questions you folks may want to start thinking about if you haven’t already. I mean, I know it’s still in the early phases, considering you haven’t even announced when early testing will be, but these are some things that will probably (if not already) be asked, and I know that I for one would be very appreciative to know the answers.

Is it possible that the expansion would/could be purchasable through the black lion with gems? like how the digital deluxe edition is—- Just a thought, a nice one at that.
I’ve been thinking about that since the laungh of GW2, it would make perfect sense to do a release like this rather than a boxed one.
People without money can get it with gold (anet still get paid though, by people that would have gone through gold sellers), people without credit card can get those “physical gift card” to add gems to their account, and people with credits cards can just get it easily.
Back on the GW1 shop, you could get outfits and expension through a credit card. In GW2, you can get outfits through gem you buy with a credit card, I don’t see why they wouldn’t sell the expension for gems.

Thanks for reply.
I’d much, much rather prefer a one-time credit card or Paypal payment. This ensures Anet recoups their investment, rather than accepting gems from gold farmers.

Not a chance
The company need revenue and will not be allowing base games or expansions to be purchased with gems.
Only the non-essentials will be available for purchase in the Gem store.

Okay… and what about WvW? Isn’t this totally going to break competition by locking out players who prefer not to purchase this expansion from playing new classes and/or specializing?
Seems a lot like you are forcing our hand here…
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Ariete.6509
Well, anybody serious about competition would not purchase the new expansion?

Well, the “gems” you can buy with gold are purchased by real money by people trading them for gold. I can’t see why they wouldn’t win money by going with that.

Good idea! Best way to destroy the ability of exchanging your gold for gems.
Good idea! Best way to destroy the ability of exchanging your gold for gems.
Well, the gem price will go up, and people will want to get gold from $/€/£. It won’t change how this is working today.

That is not how the gem exchange works. The gem exchange includes large reserves of gems and gold that player exchanges add to and subtract from; Arenanet does not directly make money from the gold to gem exchange. Gold exchanged for gems just raises the gem to gold exchange rate, potentially increasing the number of gem sales.
If HoT is made available in the gemshop, Arenanet would make much less money.

I was thinking about that, but would much rather buy a boxed expansion even if I have to go out of town and buy it. Would be kinda nostalgic
The digital deluxe edition is just add-ons to the game not like what Heart of Thorns will be. They took the time and more importantly the MONEY to make this and thus they want to see a return in their investments by making a profit and not just give away a free copy of the game to gold farmers or dare I say poor players.
If you are poor and can’t afford the game outright stop expecting hand outs. Save your money and buy it later and quit thinking its “unfair” you can’t buy it right away like some people can.

People without money can get it with gold (anet still get paid though, by people that would have gone through gold sellers)…
I may be reading this wrong, but we don’t make a cent from people who buy gold through gold sellers. The only transaction that benefits ArenaNet and funds our continued support of our games and the development of new content and the expansion pack is the sale of gems through the Black Lion Trading Company.
If I misread, I apologize. But I’d never want someone to believe that buying from any random real-money trading company somehow benefits us. Such transactions actually costs us money because we have to take out the account thieves related to RMT, remove the advertising spammers, spend time tracking and dealing with people illegally trying to profit from our content, and so forth.
Thanks for letting me clarify: If you want your gold purchase to benefit ArenaNet — to support our games, to fund future development — please purchase directly and only through the Black Lion Trading Company and/or our official Gem Store.
Sorry if I wasn’t clear enough.
I wasn’t trying to advertise gold seller in any way, nor I do understand that it ruins the game and arenanet makes no profit out of it.
I was saying that the Gem store exchange was introduced to GW2 so that people that would go buy money from gold seller could do it legally (as there isn’t a way to stop them behaving as such).
And if a lot of people buy gem from gold, the price would skyrocket to that only few people would be able to buy gems from gold. People then who have money and wants gold would buy gems, and get gold in exchange. In the end, the gem price would still rise as it would get more useful than just getting cosmetic items, and more people would buy gem with real money and sell them as they would get more gold out of it.

I don’t think that is what they meant, but was referring to people who purchase gems to exchange for gold as being “people that would have gone through gold sellers”.
That also isn’t accurate either since many people who have exchanged gems for gold would never have used black market gold sellers even if Arenanet did not offer RMT services.
I think their comment is just confusingly worded and based on inaccurate assumptions and not intended to condone black market RMT.
