I’ll make my predictions/desires known for Tengu and Largos and throw out an unmentioned idea:

Gargoyles

All the gargoyles are with the Tengu, we’ll get both races at once. That’s why they disappeared, see.

Kodan – they seem unlikely given the lack of customization abilities in appearance. Charr have leopard patterns, tiger patterns, Siamese cat patterns, plain patterns, etc. Kodan? They have white, white, and more white. Polar bear people is very limited.

I disagree on this.
Look at Asura. Their only true customizations are ears, hair and tattoo.
Look at humans. The only true customization is hair, beard for males and tattoo.
If we take Kodan, we can have also beards, warpaint, while hair and jaw similar to Charr.

My wish
1. Kodan
——————
They feel like good ground for well designed society quite different from current available races. Upon entering their societies, I really had feel of being in place of some very different culture. They have strong sense for unity trough balance but it doesn’t prevent them from using violence to achieve it which fits in the main game plot with dragons. Architecture of sanctuaries is very unique (in comparison to others) and good to have such diversity with another race.

They can have 3 different paths as other races also: sanctuary born, Song of Final Exile born and castaway. Some of interests player could choose discover the origin of race how scattered because of Jormag, reconnection of the scattered tribes/path of balance, fight distant sanctuary from icebrood, purify Kodan Voice initiate and help to comunicate with Koda. Just taking from the top of my head, but there is a lot of possibilities for Kodan to make actual race and their armors and animations can be same or similar to Norn.

Cons: I assume ANet will not take Kodan as players might think they are copying WoW Panda. Truth is, many eastern MMOs have panda and panda like races. Havi in mind, humans are in basically every MMO and in every MMO they are most popular race – who is coping who?

Pros: Due to their unique nature, Kodan fits good in role of melee and ranged professions as well as in magical and non magical concept. They might be heart appealing by looks as most of people had a bear toy. This also might be extra customization option to be more cold like as they are now or more cute (including voice and moves).

2. Skritt
—————-
As cute and funny race. Have very good base for racial signet like utilities (more power when in presence of other skritt). 3 Skritt as 1 player toon seems like Allods influence of Gibberling. Goofy too. Overall, Skritt would have to be incredibly funny and ridiculous to play with loads of silly and funny situations. They do have depicted good community and they are by far better choice than Dredge.

3. Jotun
—————-
They have been once a proud race and civilization. Player might actually be from some new zone where Jotun are still in great communities and civilized. The personal story might be quite emotional as player’s character meet savage Jotun tribes scattered and have a great impact on him. This seems highly unlikely will ever be ANet choice from many reasons. One is technical as they are too tall and can’t enter most places where all other races can.

Of all that, I see many posts where people would like Tengu. Personally, I don’t “feel” Tengu. It might be nice for those are players from GW1 but in GW2 they appear occasionally and don’t have such impact as community for someone who played GW2 only. This also might be gap filler to put them as playable race so that GW2 players only could have depiction of Tengu race as a community and large race. This also brings fear. In GW2 we don’t see any of their social organization, architecture not even beliefs and as such it would be good to be something very unique. It is clearly stated, they are neutral in all conflicts so this might be a problem regarding the core story of GW2 (or any for that matter).

In response to others (because I love dashing hopes):

Harpies – highly unlikely. Firstly, I think it was outright stated that GW2 won’t have flying, though I may be wrong on this. Secondly, all harpies are female, and since they went through the trouble of giving sylvari genders… Thirdly, they’re a very – and I mean very – primitive race.

Centaurs – Anet outright stated early on that they wanted centaurs to be a “black race” (aka evil with few redeeming qualities), and given the model I just don’t see them making it worth the hassle for armor.

Hylek, Skritt, Ogres, and Quaggans – won’t happen. Ever. Why? Racial sympathy, that’s why. Same goes for grawl which haven’t been mentioned yet.

Dwarves – they’re pretty much extinct. They won’t return as a playable race, most likely. Maybe as NPCs, but even that’s questionable in the long run.

Kodan – they seem unlikely given the lack of customization abilities in appearance. Charr have leopard patterns, tiger patterns, Siamese cat patterns, plain patterns, etc. Kodan? They have white, white, and more white. Polar bear people is very limited.

Undead (joko’s or otherwise) – possible, but they’re not really a race. I mean, Joko turns any race into an undead, so the variety is too great to make a playable race out of, both due to being too complex (they’d have to share animations with other races, which breaks the “each race have their own unique animations,” or multiple undead versions of races will share animations, which will just look silly) and due to how NPCs can have even greater variety (in GW1, you got human, centaur, giant, and seemingly charr undead in Joko’s army – in GW2, it can easily spread to heket and harpy, even perhaps ogre).

Now then, my opinions and why:

Tengu – their GW2 models share postures with charr, meaning that they can easily use charr armor designs just as sylvari and human share such. It is said in the Making of Guild Wars 2 book from the CE that the tengu were originally a candidate for a playable race, with the Dominion of Winds to be their starter city, but were cut – however, ANet still views them as a race with future potential. At the end of the personal story, one tengu who joined the Pact says he’ll take news of other races’ abilities to his people, and other tengu say they’re evaluating the races to determine who are their allies and who are their enemies.

Tengu also have among the largest lore established of GW1 races outside humans (even more than there was lore for charr in GW1, and on par to dwarves). In GW2, they also have four houses – similar to how charr have four legions, asura have three colleges, and humans have three social statuses. They can easily be added in any sort of future expansion – be it related to Cantha, or something else in Tyria.

Largos – though not a lot known on them, they seem to be presented in a similar manner as sylvari were, except using the game as the medium of introduction, rather than articles like The Movement of the World. Furthermore, they can easily share human/sylvari armor models with minimal alterations (if any) due to the placement of the wings, at the nape of the neck. And similar to the tengu, there’s a largos who said she’s going to tell her people word of the Pact’s accomplishments against Zhaitan – and its heavily implied they’re fighting the deep sea dragon, so at the very least they will be playing a bigger role. They can easily be added in an Unending Ocean expansion dealing with the Deep Sea Dragon.

I cannot really see a third race as a possibility – kodan come closest, but their lack of customization bothers me though they can still be added into a Far Shiverpeaks expansion, with a large Sanctuary somewhere in that in-land sea that Jormag made as a home city. Naga are also close, if there’s ever a Canthan expansion, but their lack of legs is harmful to their chances and if there’s a Canthan expansion I suspect tengu to be more likely, despite their lack of modern influence with Cantha.

Exactly everything I was going to say. Really.

If there were to be a third race, I think it might be something yet to be seen. Tengu are a given, and Largos are great candidates (we already have a possible Bio Option with they Houses society, and space for an evil group with a possible House being evil).

The other races are ruled out because either character customization limitations or/and racial sympathies, as well and some of thei societies not mixing well with what a playable race would need.

Kodan wouldn’t really have beards or head hair, if you ask me.

And humans, charr, norn, sylvari, and asura have the kodan cannot ever have: skin color.

Kodan are polar bears. At best, without breaking that, you’ll have various shades of white.

And with how kodan are currently, hair, beard, and the like seems unlikely. And the tattoos thus far seen on kodan are unique to the Voices, so while possible, overall seems unlikely given what we’re shown. So all you really have beyond body physic and height, would be facial features and shades of white fur – with a possible tattoo.

Don’t get me wrong either – I wouldn’t mind kodan being playable. I’d probably enjoy it, in fact (well, so long as I get a constant speed boost skill for such a character – norn feel slow as hell enough, can’t imagine an even bigger race). I just don’t see it likely given customization possibilities.

All the races have a lot more than what kodan have seen possible. Doesn’t mean Anet can’t make stuff up, but the biggest barrier is the polar bear aspect.

As for the skin – I am not too comfort with Asura skin colors. Kodan might have stripe here and there but why keep it so traditional? Most of players are distinguishable by their armor and not by physical appearance. In other words, a warrior with a helmet will not be so relevant and visible. With that in mind, why make customization always so visible? It could be voice acting and general behavour – more teddy or more ferocious.

Sorry, I have to say from the perspective of someone who is finishing his Videogame Design Degree: If you don’t give people avatar customization when other have access to it, 99% of them will rant. We like to feel that the way our character looks is personal and different. It’s studied, it may not apply to everyone, but most players want it.

Kodan all seem too similar to each other, and even facial changes wouldn’t be so noticeable on a Bear face. Charr are very different in that aspect, they were designed as feline, but with their own specific features. A Charr isn’t a were-beast, they’re their own race. A Kodan is a were-beast, they ARE humanoid Polar Bears, and you can’t play as much with those features. I like Kodan, and their “budist” culture is interesting (and probably another reason to not being playable as they think they’re in some sort of superior state and don’t get as involved in violent acts as other races), but they’re hardly a good candidate.

Another problem would be explaining how a Norn taking the form of a brown Kodan would get an special array of powerful (elite) skills, while a Kodan, having very similar physical attributes, are inferior to them.

With other races you can mae asumptions, like human faith on the gods and willpower empowering them to hit as strong as a Charr, or Asuras using enhacement devices in their armor (their racial tier 3 looks like that) or something similar, but in the case of a Kodan and a transformed Norn, they’re just too similar physically to make an excuse.

With all due respect, I think it is irrelevant. Actually, it would be good to test it as mentioned charr is the least used race in GW2, would not so customizable Kodan be more popular?

It might be irrelevant for you, as I said it doesn’t apply to everyone, but you would be really surprised (really, I was at the time too) at how many people would be bothered for lesser character customization and how many games don’t get fans because of that (and vice-versa, how good avatar customization gets fans for bad games). It’s not me who says that, as I said I’m studyng a VG degree and they present us a lot of examples of how historically, statistically people wants more customization for their avatars.

The fact that Charr are the less popular is very probably related to them being the least human-like of all the races (see how Colin mentions in that video that most MMO players pick human). Even Asuras have more human physical features than Charr.

Now if Charr aren’t so popular, imagine being an uncustomizable polar bear, whose shape you can closely replicate if you want with an skill used by a race that resemble big humans.

And I don’t think it’s too early to discuss future playable races, it’s a matter of months till they present us previews or hints of the first expansion (GW1 first expansion came exactly 1 year after release).

Yeeeaaah I dunno about that. “Become the Bear” hasn’t exactly been bowling people over as far as power level goes… it’s got some occasionally useful crowd control abilities but that’s about it. A lot of players are saying it’s actually worse than not using it at all. The real question is how much bigger you can make a race before it starts seeming outright ridiculous that asura are packing the same physical DPS.

I also don’t think the physical similarity between kodan and norn bear form is a problem; they aren’t that similar thanks to color, plus norn bear form has no armor (though after some of the EotN concept art this is kind of disappointing actually but that’s life), plus it hardly seems to get used anyway.

That’s the most oblong shaped zone ever – and I think the green is meant to show unseen Dominion of Winds’ wall? if so, it’d be wrong since Garrenhoff is a port town – the wall being where the green is would cut it off, and it doesn’t match the novels’ maps.

THere’d probably be two maps – the city and some “mini-zone” like Southsun Cove that’s meant to be a lvl 1-10 area, before tengu players get put into Caledon Forest and then Kessex Hills before joining the rest of the players.

Quaggen have the issue of beserking. It causes them to lose control of themselves.

Skritt are terrible at working independently. In large numbers Skritt are formidable. On their own they are pretty pathetic and very dumb.

I just wouldnt see either as really working.

My guesses would probably be Largos and Tengu out of the races we have already seen. I could see Dredge coming in as an outside 3rd option.

Except that the quaggans can’t control when they go berserk and that when they do, they attack friend and foe. For such a thing to become a skill, it’d turn all friendlies into hostiles and make you unable to differentiate who’s what. That’s far more work for a single aspect of gameplay which is completely imbalanced to the other races.

2. Largos- They have lore, internal factions, and a reason to join the fight, along with the needed feature for any playable race of have opposable thumbs, they’re unique so it won’t be a rip-off of the other races and it might be nice to have a aquatic-based city.

3. Kodan- While I think customization might be hard, if ANet comes up with a way to make each Kodan more distinctive as individuals it is a likely possibility. They can create a Sanctuary for a city and have them join in a battle against Jormag.

4. Mursaat- While more unlikely, I think it might be cool for these guys to make an appearance given their connection with the Fractals of the Mist.

Without breaking the current status of the kodan, they aren’t good as a playable race (current = white skinned bears).

Also, their model is pretty detailed, meaning it’s final, unlike tengu and largos, who have less work on them, meaning they plan on updating them some day (be it for playable or not).

1.) Largos
2.) Tengu
3.) Rebellious human mummies/undead of King Palawa Joko: storywise it could be explained simply that you were part of the Elonan resistance but got killed in your first mission, and soon after you were reanimated.

It could either be done by showing it in the intro, or as part of the tutorial. If it’s the latter case, it should be done in the form a flashback since it wouldn’t be representative of your “racial choice” if the intro showed your life as an oppressed Elonan human (effectively a modified version of the Tyrian human intro). At the end of the flashback you drift back into [“un-” (:D)] consciousness.

My top three?

1. Mursaat – Yes they were antagonists before, but so were the Charr. The in-game map shows the Isle of Janthir, which many assume to be the Mursaat stronghold, would it take much to program that into the game? The only issue with them being added is some kind of foreshadowing needs to be done considering the lore, but nothing said that can’t be done by such events that is being done for Flame & Frost. They are certainly one of the more mysterious races and something that I would like to see brought into the fray as a PC race. However there is the concern that we never really encountered more weapon-based Mursaat if I remember correctly. However if magic is being drained from the world, maybe some of them fall to the mundane weapon bearing classes like warrior or guardian. Needless to say if the Mursaat was released as a race then I would happily make a Mursaat Mesmer. Spectral Agony could even be their (heavily nerfed) Elite skill.

2. Tengu – I have fond memories of the Tengu from GW1. They held my attention for the longest time when I was playing through Factions. They also have a nice area marked out for them in game. Thet also naturally have a wide selection of professions which makes them pretty obvious to be added in at some point.

3. Largos – I’m a fan of these underwater butterfly people, not so much underwater combat, but I do think that it would be interesting to have them added as a playable race to the game. Mysterious natures gives us little to go on apart from the small snippits on information we have gathered.

Kodan already had a blog-post about them and it was not a “racial week”, like the other playable races had. Imo, that means they won’t ever be playable, because any races that have a single blog post, so far, are not (and most likely will never be) playable.

Tengu and Largos did not appear on the blog so far.

At the moment the Largos are the once race I want to see as a playable race. They are very intriguing and mysterious, they have a nice design and I love their vocal acting.

I’ll never play a Tengu, for the same reasons I don’t have a Charr or Asuran character. For some unknown reasons I always end up with Humans or a race who looks familiar to them.

Tengu and Largos seem like the most possible due to story and possible change to apply characteristics.. Kodan are just plain cool and could possibly be adapted to have unique looks, but story still needs work, but in the future who knows.
The three most like are
-Tengu
- Largos
- Koadan
I’m sad to say, but the lesser races like the Skritt, Quaggen, and Hylek are not good candidates. They may be cool and cute, but no real possibility.

Hey there could be a whole new race that Anet is working on, we’ll just have to wait.

Kodan – Because i think being a gigantic norn polarbear would be awesome…

Tengu – Because they are an awesome race with cool lore, and after farming them in the shiverpeaks in GW1 i feel i owe them one.

Dwarves – Because i feel like they are an intricate part of the lore and though their current status is not known in lore they are still alive and still fighting.

1-Tengu because they were one of my favorite race back in GW1 along with the charrs.

2-Largos, they’re the most likely imo to become a playable race after Tengus, and they are quite cool as well.

3-A serpentine race, I know that Kraits and forgotten are unlikely, maybe Nagas I don’t know. I at least would like a reptilian race (not just humanoid with some reptilian features like in the elder scrolls series) with maybe some crocodilian features and horns or something (iguana like).

1.) Palawa Joko’s Undead. Immortal undead soldiers with all the intelligence of a normal living being. No boring, shambling Risen here, just an army of immortal troops with centuries of experience under their belts. It didn’t take long for them to reconquer Elona after Palawa returned and got them organized again. Just imagine how nasty they’d be if they got a hold of Charr weapons or Asura technology.

2.) Tengu. They were pretty awesome in GW1, and I was massively disappointed to find out they weren’t playable in GW2.

3.) Stone Dwarves. We know they’re still down there fighting the Destroyers, so we might see them again when Primordus’ turn to die comes around.

1) Tengu, Birds are just awesome and everything seems to go their way, though i don’t see them coming anytime soon, with flame and frost going on and jormag as next ED on the list.

2) Largos, i first met them somewhere in Orr, don’t know where anymore. I was like: Duuuuuude that looks just sooooo awesome.
Their concept art is awesome, too. I can really imagine starting underwater, fighting some of bubbles minions.

3) Well, there is no third race i can imagine right now. I think arena-net is going to have something completely new coming for us. The Sylvari were unknown during gw, too.

and everytime somebody suggests naga/krait/serpentine races i can just think of this: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4uv8cd6Lh1r3xlxko1_1280.jpg

Quaggan. They are capable of learning control as some of them can accompany you in battle. Plus they are ridiculously cute and yes, I’d love to see one wielding a greatsword or maybe a really huge hammer. Coo!

I also like Skritt for the amusement, but I think the stupidity-in-small-numbers factor may be even harder to overcome/handwave than quaggan issues with rage.

I miss the dwarves from GW1, but I’d rather see them around as NPCs than play one myself. I’ve never maxed out a dwarf in any game I played – just don’t like them aesthetically.

The truth is, i’m excited that either one is possible, they’re both cool and i can deferentially see story arcs. However when looking up the Kodan, I really see more of a racial sympathy candidate., but yeah i wish they could be a player candidate.

My final vote, go Largos! I love their mysterious culture, their look, and their accents.

I would love to see a phantom type race, complete with underground city. I really liked the underground cities in GW1, a ghost race would be very cool.
Tengu…and the frog people. I would love to play as a frog.
Centaurs…please…I have always wanted to play as a centaur =)

A phantom and centaur race along with other races that are neutral or anti-human could make a neat scenario story wise.

They could really do well with adding unique races to an expansion, I would imagine the armor design would take a lot of time unfortunately. Look at the Sylvari – they look terrible in armor that is not cultural. Then again, they are probably making a lot of money from the gem store with transmutation stone sales.
