Tengu – Always loved this race even in GW1, I still recall being all excited to see a Tengu henchman too. Now in GW2 there is a lot of mystery behind this race and would love to play as one. Not to mention they were considered as a playable race in early development. Having these guys announced would make my day.

Largos – They are just cool, let’s face it. Mysterious and cool, like the Predator

Kodan – Like Norn but hairier and bearier. I think the whole lore is fascinating too, though I would just like more info on them tbh.

1. Tengu – The entire city is walled off, and once it is opened up to people, they’ll be more friendly, and perhaps playable. There’s enough mystery behind these guys to make them interesting.

2. Kodan – Although arguably just a bear shaped Norn, I think the Kodan are pretty cool in terms of their culture and beliefs, but they’re not super developed. They just kind of appear in random places and you don’t get a crazy amount of context about them.

3. Dwarves – I’m not even sure if they’re applicable anymore, but it would be awesome to have dwarves back. If not playable, it’d be cool to find some way to at least get dwarven NPCs without shattering the lore.

On a slightly related note, I would totally play Quaggan if they were playable.

Tengu- top choice.. they are awesome.. reminds me of Falco from Star fox … lol

Largos- only if they were purcase only in the store.. because they don’t often go among land dwellers.

skritt- they already have a colony as big as any city, would be awesome to run around as a skritt. doing all that.. skritt stuff.

Dwarven NPC’s don’t break lore, they are in the depths fighting Primordius right now. There is one NPC that is visible through the Durmand Priory (Ogden Stonehealer). I find it very believable that if Primordius breaks out, or if we break into his realm, we will find many dwarves running about fighting him. This said they would definitely be stone dwarves, and highly unlikely to be a playable race.

To add to the 2 I previously said (Largos and Tengu), I though about something that might be interesting:

- Onis.

We didn’t know too much of them during Factions, only that they were super hostile and part of Kanaxai’s army.

Now think about this: The jade sea is returning to its original state, and Kanaxai’s lair was located deep in the jade. What if the onis we met were only a faction of their race, and there were more civilizated onis but all of them were unable to reach us either because of the jade or because Kanaxai had conquered them?

Onis would allow for some inovative character design and are probably one of the few races strong enough to stop the new emperor from kicking them from Cantha.

2 of my top 3 are the ones that make the most sense – Largos and Tengu. Everyone has already discussed why they make the most sense, so I won’t go into it here. My opinion here is based purely on their looks. :P

1) Largos – these are my top pick because I’d someday like to play something other than the Sylvari, and aesthetically, the other races just don’t appeal to me enough. (Humans=beautiful but boring… Norn=big humans… Charr=uncute cats, boo… Asura=these were an “almost” for me, but I ultimately found their cuteness insufficient compared to Sylvari beauty.) Largos I think have the potential to match the Sylvari in terms of beauty AND otherworldly uniqueness, not to mention color and GLOW! I just hope that they’re not hideous under those masks. If ANet can make salad people look beautiful, I’m sure they can make fish people look beautiful too. I can’t wait to see their swimming animations! I’d envision their movement to be up and down like mermaids, while the “wings” would ripple like a manta ray’s.

2) Tengu – while I wouldn’t play one, I like the Tengu presence in the game. They look cool. I’d be really interested to know what Tengu females would look like, as I don’t think I’ve seen any yet. If anyone has a link to a female Tengu, please post it! Based on the lore though, I’m worried that Tengu females might be disappointing compared to the males, since their colors are supposed to be plainer. ANet haven’t always followed gender lore, though. The female Charr are supposed to be lithe (I read: “feminine”) compared to males, but to me they just look like less ugly males.

3) I’m really not sure. Kodan, probably. Most of the arguments against them can be refuted by current game content. So what if the Norn already have a bear form? They have a big cat form too, that didn’t kick the Charr out of the running. So what if they’re all white? Asura in lore are mostly grey. That didn’t stop the devs putting other colors in the gen. So what if males and females look the same? Again, look at the Asura. I don’t particularly like the Kodan, but they’re popular so I don’t see the devs kicking out the possibility of playable Kodan yet.

Mursaat might have been #3 for me, but I don’t know enough about what they look like under the cool armor. In some pics they look almost rotted, so I don’t know about that. Besides, it might be redundant to have 2 masked races, and I’m with the Largos all the way with that one.

Judging from voice clips there aren’t any in GW2, but there were some in GW1. They didn’t look any different from the males there though. I… would have to figure that’d change, but I’m not sure how much stock to put in the “plainer” line, since in the only canon place I remember that stated (Factions manuscripts), they completely ignored it in the accompanying game.

I would love Grawl, Tengu and Dredge to become playable.

The only race I could currently see as being playable in the near future in the tengu. They were a widespread race, there are many varieties, and there is the possiblity for appearances we’ve never seen in game (thinking tengu from Elona and other parts of the world), they have a sizable city and possible starting area, are seem to be waiting to make their move in the world.
They also seem to have knowledge of a previous dragon rise, which could make them valuable allies should the extent of that knowledge be revealed in the future.

You’re missing out Kodan and Largo

Grawl will never be playable due to being a lesser race that others can choose as a racial sympathy. They would also have a difficult time regardless of this because they’re one of the races that has made little, if any, advancement in culture or technology over the past 250 years.
The problem with dredge is they’re extremely xenophobic and kill anything that isn’t one their own. Yes, they have internal problems of their own but they have too many disadvantages that would prevent them from being a playable race without a major overhaul.
The kodan all look the same so there would be a definite lack of customization. There’s also no way to distinguish genders without speaking to them which has its own problems.
Largos may have potential but the lack of information on them cannot be ignored. I would need to know more before making a judgment as to whether or not they could be playable.
With the exception of tengu, none of these races have a starting area or major city. The only one that could go either way is the largos, again this as a result of the lack of information on them.

Your point about Kodan is invalid. Let me explain why; in Guild Wars 1, all Charr were the same, with little difference. All were male and it wasn’t until EoTN where more options were added to them. I believe the same with Kodan. Also, if a Human can dye their hair, why can’t a Kodan? Also, if they ever released I’m sure the developers would take the time to really create a difference between male and female; you assume they’re the same but that’s because they’re currently not playable.

That’s not quite the same situation. In GW1, we never saw any female Charr. At all. Whereas in GW2, we do meet male and female Kodan, and they look exactly the same. I’ll grant that ANet could always create different models for them and retroactively change all female Kodan models in the game though.

Personally, I doubt the Kodan will become a playable race more because they’re too similar to the Norn in terms of theme. They’re both big, physically powerful, arctic-dwelling races that use ice/cold-themed weapons. They occupy too similar a gaming cliche for them to really stand out on their own.

My “outlier” race choice would be the Krait (or Naga). There’s considerable variation in appearance between different types of krait (I’ve seen them in shades of grey, brown as well as light and dark skinned variants. Some have heavy scales, some have spines, and some are almost smooth. Some have a flat, swimming tail, while others are more pointed and snake-like.), and there’s a distinct difference between male and female Krait. More importantly, Krait can function equally well on land as in water. That’s the main reason why I don’t think the Largos or Quaggan will become playable races, because as primarily aquatic races, they wouldn’t be able to venture too far away from the water without extreme pain or discomfort.

You know, I don’t get the notion that the kodan are “too like the norn” at all.

Norn are legend builders, appear as large humans who can take on were-forms of various animals, and are lovers of battle, ale, and storytelling. They treat their faith and the closest things to deities they have as guidelines for how to make a legend, but don’t worship and they have very loose laws and cooperation.

Kodan are balance-keepers, appear as large bipedal polar bears, and disdain from combat unless necessary. Their faith is in Koda, a single entity, and their religion is their law and must be adhered to, and they live in large communities that are protective of their children.

The only similarity the two races have is that they are both seen in the Shiverpeak Mountains primarily, and were pushed south by Jormag. Bear Form doesn’t even look much like a kodan, and is nude while kodans are clothed.

TBH, if you take out the Bear Form from the norn, the two races are nothing alike.

What i wish:

1) Skritt. The SHEER potential for a completely laughable ‘personal’ storyline quest which is entirely made for fun about a little skritt groups journey through life? Glorious. Potential for a side-quest or a optional add on maybe?

Skritt missions would be for fun, laugh and jokes. It would give your GW2 writing team somethign to play with for a good time. Play as one, with two AI skritt that follow you about.

You could even make it so they dont have classes, they just have a specifically made ‘skritt’ class with its own abilitys and so on…

2) An entirely new race – Something new and cool. The asura were driven up from the surface near the end of Guildwars, so how about something else appearing from somewhere?

3) Kodan. Because polar bears are cool.

Whats most likely:

1) Tengu – They have SO much lore and are fleshed out so much, they have dialogue already voiced, they probably have cinematics already and i am willing to bet animations have been done for most of them especially as they were being considered as a player race initially.

2) Largo, as its already been stated above I wont expand here.

3) Humanity – The other humans. They were seperate races in gw1, so perhaps they should be seperate in number 2. It would make sense to have different style human characters, asian and so forth. Cantha, and the other human lands.

Very much disagree that more humans are likely. We already have humans, AND big humans. I, along with many others, would be very disappointed with a new “race” that is actually just ethnic humans (and this is coming from an Asian player). I haven’t been to the Human and Norn character creation screens, but I know for the Sylvari there are certain face options that look more Asian, or more African American. With slider tweaking they can be made to look even more ethnic. Do the Humans not get options like this as well?

I think as expansions are added for Cantha and Elona (at least I hope they’ll be added) the devs may release more faces that are appropriate for those regions, like in GW1. But as for a separate human race that just happens to be ethnic? I highly doubt it.

Yeah, human nationalities will not be a new race. What may, or may not happen, is that they will likely include humans of differing nationalities further within the NPC’s found in the game. But to answer your question schizandra, there are a lot of human modification abilities, and you can definitely make them feel ethnic.

There is already an Asian looking face, and you could also make them black. So i don’t think other humans will be another race when all they need to do is add it on to the Humans we already have. There is one story line that lets you pick 1 one the four Human kingdoms when you’re asked where did you’re family come from “If you pick that you lost you’re sister” So it’s very unlikely that we will see more Humans.

Tengu are unquestionably my number 1, and I agree with many others that they are by far the most likely first new race for reasons that have already been stated and I won’t bother repeating. I personally really like the Tengu, even more so than some of our existing playable races; avian races are not terribly common in fantasy, there’s a lot of lore and background for them, and I like the elements of the society that we know of so far. I already know what class I’ll be rolling if they come along.

I guess Kodan would be next. The lack of customization could be a problem, but I find their society intriguing. Plus, you know…armored polar bears.

Largos would be likely, but I’m not a fan of them. What I’d like to see is Centaurs, and they would probably be my third choice, but I also recognize they are very unlikely to be implemented due to the animation and underwater issues.

You know, I don’t get the notion that the kodan are “too like the norn” at all.

I’m assuming that was in response to my post. Culturally and religiously, yes, the Kodan are as different from the Norn as can be. However, in terms of character tropes, they occupy a similar niche to the Norn (as I said, large, imposing, physically powerful beings that dwell in cold/arctic regions). The Norn are already there for characters who want to create “hulking berserkers”, “stoic frontiersmen” or “wise shamans”.

And if the Tengu do end up being the next playable race as many of us expect, the Tengu will fill the role of the honorable, tradition-bound race which the Koda also touch on.

ANet based each of the 5 races around three unique characteristics when designing them (the Asura had ingenuity, the Charr had industry, the Humans had faith etc.) I just feel that the Kodan don’t quite have enough of these characteristics to distinguish themselves as a unique in-game theme because of their overlap with the other races.

  1. Largos: I’ve made a few arguments before in support of these guys, and as far as I’m concerned, nothing much has changed. I’d love to see them become available in the same expansion as tengu, because they’d play off one another very well (i.e. new and old, sea and sky, dark and bright, etc).
  2. Centaur: Their awkward bodies are precisely the reason I’d like to play as these guys, but that same reason is likely to doom them to NPC status forever. If they were to come, the only way I could see it happening is with: Elona, by themselves (they’d require more work than both tengu and largos combined), and the art team getting really creative with their animations. I’d love to see it happen, but I’m pretty sure it never will.
  3. Tengu: If I had to pick a third, I guess it would be these guys. They’re not my favorite, but they’re very likely going to be the first race addition we see. Whether or not I make one will depend on their background, creation options, and cultural armors. As it stands, I like my charr and all the themes that go with them more than anything I’ve seen with tengu.

Something related to keep in mind: I keep seeing posts (not necessarily just in this thread) where people point to existing models and animations to support to deny a race’s plausibility at becoming playable. The thing is, if a race that’s currently an NPC were to become playable, the art team would revisit their design and very likely make entirely new models to support customization, world armor, and all the necessary animations. They’re not just going to go, “Largos are playable!” and give us what’s already in-game to the letter.

Looking at both tengu and largos, it seems obvious to me that both are using placeholder models. Every tengu looks the same except for some being colored differently than others, their animations are snappy and disjointed, etc. Largos currently suffer the same thing. There’s absolutely no variety in their models beyond their gender. This is, admittedly, more excusable given how few of them there are, but it seems to me that if they were intended to always be NPCs, they would have gone to the effort to make each one (since they’re sorta rare) slightly different from the next.

Yes I agree if they’re going to make them a playable race they will remake the models. That won’t happen until they are ready to make that change. We have to wait and see, but I believe the both will be playable at some point. I would not put work on something that’s not going to be used right away (or work on it on the side). When those two races get closer to being playable I think we will hear more about them and see more of them.

Anet is known to not show much about anything until they’re ready to show it, so I think they’re hiding it until we get closer. So even if they did have different models ready we would not see them in game until they were ready to expand on it.

The Tengu were going to be playable, so I’m sure they have other models for them already. The Largos were into’d into to us with in the last few months. Like I said Anet likes to not give out much info until they’re ready to expand on it, I would guess that means races models as well.

Oh yes BTW, they will have to do some overhauls on the underwater zones. Unless of course they think it’s ready for a fight with Bubbles?? But I doubt it, I think they will need it. If the Largos had any chance to be playable it would most likely be at that time. They may be Anets way to highlight underwater zones for the reason of Anet wanting underwater to be equal to the content on land. John Sharp said to expect the full amount of content underwater, and the Largos stand out to re-enforce that idea in my mind(I think that is the main reason for them to be intro’d). To have an underwater starting area, city and race would do a lot to make it equal. I can’t see any other underwater race being able to fill that roll.

1. Stone dwarfs
2. Tengu
3. Largos

I see some interesting possibility to introduced them one after the other when introducing fights with different dragons. I expect the stone dwarfs to rejoin the rest of Tyria with Primordius’ return, the Largos will join in when the DSD desides to show up and The Tengu are just a good possibility in general.

The sad thing is that the Tengu make more sense when it comes to Primordius because of the fact that they are fighting his minions on both sides of the wall already.

Tengu- Because you know it’s going to happen.

Forgotten- Because there needs to be a snake race in a MMO.

Mursaat- Though I don’t see them being pure mursaat now, if there are the numbers anyway. I can see them changing themselves to hide from the titans. Plus, they don’t have a reason to be human sacrificing kittens now!

The only Playable Race i really want even to the point where i’d jump on the forum and beg for it is Tengu

I have been a huge fan of the Tengu since i first saw them in Gw1
and i was soo mad when i found out they were a original choice for a playable race that got scrapped
make it happen Anet please

and i’ve seen Mursaat here quite a bit lately but I have to point out that they are a evil race of spellcasters whom fear the Elder Dragons
so its highly unlikely we will ever see them in Gw2 even as enemies

What about the Mursaat being evil spellcasters who fear ED’s makes you conclude that we won’t see them as enemies?

To be fair, the Charr started off as an evil race of cat people that destroyed your homeland in gw1. They then proceeded to launch attacks on Orr, which lend to its destruction by the Vizsor, and they attacked Kryta as well, which were saved by the Mursaat.

The charr have a far larger body count in gw1 than the mursaat did, and if arena net can write them into a playable race; they can do the same with the mursaat.

The Mursaat are one of the Elder Races, so like dwarves, Seer, Forgotten and Jotun it’s rather unlikely they will be playable. Besides that they have been brought to near extinction by the titans. And that the Charr have a higher body count is not necessarily true, certainly not if you go by the percentage of the total poplulation.
The players killed hundreds of Mursaat in the Siverpeaks and the Fire Islands, many more died off-screen when the titans got their claws on them. Then another handful died during the War in Kryta. Now numerically alone this is far behind the thousands of Charr that must have tied during their conquest, but I’m pretty sure the Charr had a very high population at that time, since EotN shows there are still plenty left. Also in GW2, the Charr have a population that is equal to the humans in Tyria, despite only showing a bit more than a third of their total population (we only see the Iron Legions land, not the other two’s, and the Blood Legion is said to have the most members).
The Mursaat on the other hand, seem to be faaaar less in total numbers. They probably suffer from the same problem that many high civilized cultures show, they don’t get down and dirty anymore, they rather focus on, what ever could preoccupy a Mursaat, like in our world many countries age rapidly (Japan being the best example) because it’s citizens rather focus on their career than having a family. The higher the standart of live is, the higher the chance that a civilization will stop to procreate.
And there is of course also the fact that the Mursaat waged a massive war on the Seers, which pretty much wiped the latter from the globe, but it’s a good guess that the Mursaat suffered some heavy blows too, which they never fully recovered from. (Random thought: What if the Seers made the Mursaat infertile via magic and those we see are actually very old and grumpy survivors from the last dragon cycle?)

However, I still think we are going to see them in GW2, as enemies, I mean Lazarus is still around and the White Mantle need them in the background to be actually threatening again.

You don’t win friends with salad! Sorry I just got caught up in the rhythm.

Most Likely (and my personal wishes):

1. Tengu: Way too much potential and context to not be. Plus, an avian race is pretty cool. The fact that they were originally going to be playable also gives them momentum.

Problems: Their “blocked off area” is barely large enough to hold one city, let alone a whole starting area as well. I guess they could share Caledon forest and Kessex hills, but that doesn’t seem fair to this new race. Anet would have to change existing land or add new, illogical land (like they did with Southsun Cove)

2. The Largos: Humanoid models make them easier to code for. They’re very interesting and have a lot to work with. The little info we have on them ends up making them EASIER to add, since they don’t have to shoehorn them into a random, previously unheard of area. They also make sense to add in a Deep Sea Dragon expansion. Plus: mostly or entirely aquatic starting zone=awesome.

Problems: As said by others, they’re supposed to be heavy isolationists. It would be weird to see hundreds of them running across Tyria if it wasn’t explained.

3.Kodan: Polar bear people! My personal number one choice, but they’re lower because they’re less likely. They’ve got a cool settlement design, cool culture, and interesting outlook on life (even if I don’t agree with it). Also, statements that they’re not customizable make no sense. All Largos and Tengu have basically identical models as well, but I don’t see anyone bringing THAT up. We would still probably be able to change skin(fur?) tone from white to a light yellow or light gray, plus all body, face, and accessory customizations. We could also have teeth and claws to customize as well. They’ve also been shown to have fur paintings/tattoos on them in concept art, so that would add another layer of customization. We all also love the look of their sanctuaries, wouldn’t it be cool to see a full city on one? Finally: they were apparently supposed to be much larger before release, as the Snowden Drifts loading screen indicates. Why would the devs scale them down to Norn size, if not to make them possibly playable?

Problems: Only problem I can think of is finding them a home. All known sanctuaries are either under attack or too small. They could have one near the Woodland Cascades, but that would ruin the snow/ice theme unless they made part of the woods snowy or chilly. Still, only a minor obstacle.

Races that probably won’t happen

-Quaggen(models too weird to work)
-Centaurs(see above)
-Skritt (to frequently fought as enemy race0
-Dredge (see above)
