Assuming that Anet would introduce another playable race, what would you like it to be?

1) Harpies – Who wouldn’t want to fly?

2) Centaurs – Because 4 legged is awesome!

3) Skritt – Always works in teams of 3 (when you make 1 character, you get 3!). Strength and intelligent in numbers!

1) Tengu – At some point of GW2’s development they were considered to be playable and are the most likely imo. Besides that they are samurai!

2) Palawa Joko’s undead – Not too likely (too close to WoW’s forsaken I guess), but I would definitely play one.

3) Largos – Their lore so far is cool, if only they wouldn’t look like butterfly people (I know they are fins).

Thing is, the way they’ve established the sub-races, they will never ever implement them as playable races.

The three races I’d pick, personal preference: Largos (I adore water-dwelling races, and they are basically Norn mermaids in many ways), Skritt (Rats are my favorite animal), Harpies (Cause harpies are rad)

The races that I think are actually viable/probable future races: Tengu, Largos, Kodan.

In response to others (because I love dashing hopes):

Harpies – highly unlikely. Firstly, I think it was outright stated that GW2 won’t have flying, though I may be wrong on this. Secondly, all harpies are female, and since they went through the trouble of giving sylvari genders… Thirdly, they’re a very – and I mean very – primitive race.

Centaurs – Anet outright stated early on that they wanted centaurs to be a “black race” (aka evil with few redeeming qualities), and given the model I just don’t see them making it worth the hassle for armor.

Hylek, Skritt, Ogres, and Quaggans – won’t happen. Ever. Why? Racial sympathy, that’s why. Same goes for grawl which haven’t been mentioned yet.

Dwarves – they’re pretty much extinct. They won’t return as a playable race, most likely. Maybe as NPCs, but even that’s questionable in the long run.

Kodan – they seem unlikely given the lack of customization abilities in appearance. Charr have leopard patterns, tiger patterns, Siamese cat patterns, plain patterns, etc. Kodan? They have white, white, and more white. Polar bear people is very limited.

Undead (joko’s or otherwise) – possible, but they’re not really a race. I mean, Joko turns any race into an undead, so the variety is too great to make a playable race out of, both due to being too complex (they’d have to share animations with other races, which breaks the “each race have their own unique animations,” or multiple undead versions of races will share animations, which will just look silly) and due to how NPCs can have even greater variety (in GW1, you got human, centaur, giant, and seemingly charr undead in Joko’s army – in GW2, it can easily spread to heket and harpy, even perhaps ogre).

Now then, my opinions and why:

Tengu – their GW2 models share postures with charr, meaning that they can easily use charr armor designs just as sylvari and human share such. It is said in the Making of Guild Wars 2 book from the CE that the tengu were originally a candidate for a playable race, with the Dominion of Winds to be their starter city, but were cut – however, ANet still views them as a race with future potential. At the end of the personal story, one tengu who joined the Pact says he’ll take news of other races’ abilities to his people, and other tengu say they’re evaluating the races to determine who are their allies and who are their enemies.

Tengu also have among the largest lore established of GW1 races outside humans (even more than there was lore for charr in GW1, and on par to dwarves). In GW2, they also have four houses – similar to how charr have four legions, asura have three colleges, and humans have three social statuses. They can easily be added in any sort of future expansion – be it related to Cantha, or something else in Tyria.

Largos – though not a lot known on them, they seem to be presented in a similar manner as sylvari were, except using the game as the medium of introduction, rather than articles like The Movement of the World. Furthermore, they can easily share human/sylvari armor models with minimal alterations (if any) due to the placement of the wings, at the nape of the neck. And similar to the tengu, there’s a largos who said she’s going to tell her people word of the Pact’s accomplishments against Zhaitan – and its heavily implied they’re fighting the deep sea dragon, so at the very least they will be playing a bigger role. They can easily be added in an Unending Ocean expansion dealing with the Deep Sea Dragon.

I cannot really see a third race as a possibility – kodan come closest, but their lack of customization bothers me though they can still be added into a Far Shiverpeaks expansion, with a large Sanctuary somewhere in that in-land sea that Jormag made as a home city. Naga are also close, if there’s ever a Canthan expansion, but their lack of legs is harmful to their chances and if there’s a Canthan expansion I suspect tengu to be more likely, despite their lack of modern influence with Cantha.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Heh …

1.) Quaggans – customization via skin patterns/scarring could work … they also do seem to differ in size between Quaggans.

2.) Largos – love their style, just frigging love it. And who argues with encounter suits?
Also the bioluminescence on their wings could be a customizable factor, like with Sylvari.

3.) Tengu – There is that blank space near Lion’s Arch, and a gate guarded by birdmen (Dominion of Winds). You also figure their customizations could include plumage, beak shape/length, eye color.

2. Largos. Their main city could be underwater, with a lot of underwater locations around it. This would be a good moment to upgrade the underwater mechanics.

3. Tengu. They will be added anyway.

1. Tengu

Make it part of the Canthan expansion and their starting area at the Dominion of Winds.

2. Stone Dwarf

When ArenaNet finally gets around to making Primordus the next Elder Dragon to fight against, they should introduce the Dwarven race with the effects of the Great Dwarf transformation. Make underground cities made out of stone for them, or better yet, make them occupy the old Asuran cities underground!

3. Margonite

With the defeat of Abaddon, what happened to the Margonite race? Even the Realm of Torment became “redeemed” by Kormir, what happened to them? They are immortal, cannot breed and fornicate, and even in GW1 they were capable of individual thinking. So what happened to them?

ArenaNet should place them under the rule and leadership of Kormir, with the “hostile” Margonites still worshipping Abaddon’s ways and ideals, the equivalence of the Nightmare Court, Inquest, Sons of Svanir, etc. Margonites now live under constant assault by Palawa Joko’s forces and must cleanse Elona off the undead scourge that has plagued it for so long. The fate of Elona is now in the hands of Kormir’s new Order of Sunspears mainly composed of Margonites and the minority being from the other races.

Their starting zone should be inside Kormir’s Redeemed Realm itself, with a portal connecting Fahranur, The First City in Istan and the Margonite main city in the Redeemed Realm together.

I dig the Draken concept, but how would most Tyrians deal with a reptile race, considering the ED biz?

Another issue: Dredge are physically blind. Considering their aptitude for sonics, I can see them using some form of echolocation/enhanced smell. However, this does a number on UI vs. immersion. Do we go full immersion, and change a player’s UI for them being Dredge, or do we keep the same UI and wreck immersion?

If i had to pick three they would be without any doubt:

  1. Skritt – it’s not that common to see rat races as playable and i think it can be so fun, the only game featuring a rat race i’v seen, was warhammer with the Skaven, but personally i prefer Skritt, they look less vicious, and the way their community works is very interesting. (although i can’t support the idea of playing with 3 Skritts at the same time...maybe give them a bonus attending to the number of skritts around you or something)
  2. Centaur – i’v been dreaming with the day i could play an mmo with a Centaur! But it’s not very likely to happen because well, Centaurs would be a problem to fit in any game for several reasons. The main one that comes to my mind is the running speed…after all we can’t ignore they’re half horse, so they run faster then any other race…and this could be a problem in pvp matters i guess…
  3. Tengu – I love this race, and well it’s not very likely to have a humanoid-bird race on mmo’s. I’v seen them as npc’s in some (none of them pleased me as the Tengu…), but never as a playable… I would be excited to see Tengu’s as a playable race in fact!

Those are my top 3 but i think Quaggan would be a nice one to be implemented, alongside with a fantastic underwater map, with coral reefs and all that underwater stuff. (And i got reminded of these because yesterday while playing i actually looked at how Quaggan swimming animation looks, and it’s quite awesome!)

The only race I could currently see as being playable in the near future in the tengu. They were a widespread race, there are many varieties, and there is the possiblity for appearances we’ve never seen in game (thinking tengu from Elona and other parts of the world), they have a sizable city and possible starting area, are seem to be waiting to make their move in the world.
They also seem to have knowledge of a previous dragon rise, which could make them valuable allies should the extent of that knowledge be revealed in the future.

Grawl will never be playable due to being a lesser race that others can choose as a racial sympathy. They would also have a difficult time regardless of this because they’re one of the races that has made little, if any, advancement in culture or technology over the past 250 years.
The problem with dredge is they’re extremely xenophobic and kill anything that isn’t one their own. Yes, they have internal problems of their own but they have too many disadvantages that would prevent them from being a playable race without a major overhaul.
The kodan all look the same so there would be a definite lack of customization. There’s also no way to distinguish genders without speaking to them which has its own problems.
Largos may have potential but the lack of information on them cannot be ignored. I would need to know more before making a judgment as to whether or not they could be playable.
With the exception of tengu, none of these races have a starting area or major city. The only one that could go either way is the largos, again this as a result of the lack of information on them.

I suppose they would have to have a distinct feel apart from ED lore and conceptually visually different. If they were closer to gators or simply drakes as found in swamps or water I wouldn’t see a problem as long as they were merely intellegent animals.

For the dredge, i would say that no matter there way of understanding their enviornment they still “see” in some form. If they in fact used smell or echolocation it is still a way to understand their enviornment regardless of sight so there might be ways to get around immersion breaking arguments. But in site of the argument, the UI could focus on perhaps technology allowing them to see in the sunlight—landing somewhere similiar to underwater breathing apparatus, while “undergound” they function as normal.

honestly Centaur I would most want to play if I could although I know there are some constraints. The Centaur are just plain kittenery. If we could get around clipping problems, run speed problems and lower body gear problems I would say them as number 1.
Out of all the races, the Centaur are probably the coolest oldschool fantasy race in all of Tyria. Plus, they just have a tough feel to them, not like Charr tough, but a strong, hearty toughness. They are not as popular as elves, orcs, trolls and that like in games but are just as cool.

I’ve had similar ideas but I’d expect them more in Elona (perhaps ELonian behemoths are a primitive offshoot?) or in another part of the world we haven’t seen. They’d probably be viewed by other races with distrust initially given the current stance on krait. They’d also have to live up to other reptilian racial standards (Forgotten/Naga).

Another idea I had for a desert dwelling culture (possibly in the far east portions of the Crystal Desert) might be something with inspirations from Egyptian culture would be a race that vaguely resembles a jackal type creature. I got the idea from watching the second movie from The Mummy series.

If you were to go off of NPC models for humans you would think the only option was white/Caucasian Ascalonian models. I think there is obviously room for expansion in the types of customizable characters.

Harpies and Jotun can’t be playable for pretty much the same reason. For Jotun, it’s stated in lore that they restrict the females in the home and keep them hidden away. They’d have to have a female uprising like the charr, and this unlikely because the Jotun have no great amount of social organization. One uprising would only affect one small family or tribe.
Harpies are female-dominated. We don’t know if their males even exist, but if they do they’re probably like the female Jotun—restrained in the home. Also, from observing Harpy behavior in Guild Wars 1, it seems very likely that Harpies have no males at all and instead mate with Griffons.
And both Harpies and Jotun lack technology and a united society. They’re spread out in primitive tribes.

My three would be: Tengu, Largos, and Naga

Tengu: Plently of customization, good social organization and technology, equal genders, strong lore, four separate houses, huge home city, already planned to be playable.
Largos: Since we know next to nothing about them, there’s lots of room to add everything they need to make them playable.
Naga: Kind of a combination of Tengu reasons and Largos reasons. They have interesting lore, and are proven to be organized and intellegent, but we also know little about them—so there’s room to make them playable.

Also, less likely, but awesome would be if the Mursatt became playable. MURSATT FOR THE WIN! But Arenanet stated they already have plans for the Mursatt and White Mantle so I’m not going to let my hopes go too high.

Whenever Anet introduces an event, they would add new crafting recipes which are related to the event to the mix as well. Not sure what theme will be associated with the most probable candidate, Tengu, can’t wait for Anet announcement.

Well for Dwarves, it’s pretty easy – LUBES!! To be in constant state of rigidity, a little lube is essential to smooth things out. Besides, lube-related crafting can be associated with movement speed, evasiveness and crowd control condition such as knockdown. Anyway “Superior Rune of Lube You Long Time” sounds alright with me

Heck, it even blends well with marriage function (increase intimacy points, if ya know what I mean), if Anet intends to implement such concept in the future.

If you were to go off of NPC models for humans you would think the only option was white/Caucasian Ascalonian models. I think there is obviously room for expansion in the types of customizable characters.

Except that there are dark tanned and black humans in GW2, just as there are white models. There’s also a very small handful of asian appearance NPCs.

And GW1 featured a large variety of skin tones among NPCs.

However, humans are a greatly skin-tone differencing race, whereas polar bears is on par to white humans. If the kodan were just simply “bear people” then I can easily see it – you’d have black bears, grizzly bears, polar bears, panda bears, etc. But you don’t. You just have polar bears, aka white bears.

Harpies are female-dominated. We don’t know if their males even exist, but if they do they’re probably like the female Jotun—restrained in the home. Also, from observing Harpy behavior in Guild Wars 1, it seems very likely that Harpies have no males at all and instead mate with Griffons.

In GW1, those griffons were harpy hatchlings (which made a big “wtf” when you got “Elder Skree Griffon” which basically meant “Elder Harpy Hatchling”) – this seems to have been retconned between the games.

Harpies are known to have natural aphrodesiacs in their sweat, and there’s an event in Fireheart Rise where they seduce a grawl. In Fields of Ruin you can also see they lay eggs that are… very huge. So they seem to (forcibly) mate with males of other species (possibly a large number of), or are asexual (self-reproducing asexual). So I’d say there are no male harpies (especially since the race are insultingly called “she-beasts”) – that, or their males have boobs with high voices too.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

You’re missing out Kodan and Largo

I just point out that this topic is supposed to be the races you want to have in the game not the races you think will be added in game. I know Dredge and Grawl are almost certainely not going to happened but I would love to have them in game. The Largos live somewhere in the sea and this is the reason for the lack of information on them. I believe that they added to as we move towards fighting Bubbles.

I would love to play as a Margonite. I love their growing wings and bodies. Perhaps their body grow colour and pattern can be customized. It is indeed possible that some of them now follows Kormir for power. Perhaps Kormir even found a way to let them reproduce.

Margonite are, in a way, the ultimate “human beings”. They are the full embodiment of magic, the thing that at one point set them apart from the other races.

1.) Draken ~ a reptilian aquatic race resembling drakes or alligators. Gw2 could use an aquatic race. The largos are cool too though, but an alligator race would be awesome.

b.) Tengu ~ an avian type race would be cool—I wish they could somehow have wings though and fly like harpees slightly above ground on z axis.

III.) Dredge ~ an underground race, could have burrow mechanisms and elites.

Draken would be cool. Another related idea would be an elephant/rhino/hippo race. Slow movement but tough as nail and knocks back foes.

1. Largos – I just think they’re awesome. Since the first time I’ve ran into one I wanted to play one.

2. Tengu – The gate in Lion’s arch makes me curious. The clothing style and such also makes me wonder what their towns would look like.

3. Kodan – After doing the quests in frostgorge sound they interest me. Their ways of thinking with balance is pretty nice

My dream list (that will probably never happen):
2. Skritt. I’m from Skri—Pittsburgh in real life, so I feel a strange connection, even though my neighborhood doesn’t actually get regularly invaded by destroyers. Unless gentrification counts.

Good to know someone else laughed at that reference. Livin in the ’burgh, myself.
Guess we could count crackheads/bath salts-junkies as “Destroyers?”

If we’re looking at pure hopes… forgotten/naga.

Realistically… I think tengu are probably the most likely (and one I’m hoping for). Largos I’m less certain about – the way they’ve been used in the story so far portrays them as a mysterious race that appears in small numbers to hunt down specific foes. Having them playable would destroy both the mystery and the feeling of scarcity.

Centaurs, for the record, were knocked out because they couldn’t come up with a swimming animation that they were happy with. Dredge and hylek can both be ruled out because they have racial immunities to conditions (blind and poison respectively) – making them playable would either lead to them being unbalanced or lead to PCs that somehow lack the immunities of NPC members of their kind.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

Both Tengu and Largos seem to have been set up as a future playable race by the explicit mention of separate ‘factions’- the Tengu have the North, South, East and West houses, and the Largos have the ‘Tethyos Houses’. Much of the pre-release information on our current playable races focused on their factions, if you remember.

As for what I’d like… I’ll go with Dredge, Elonian Undead, and… possibly Djinn? Just imagine that. The design would have to be heavily modified to allow for armour etc, but it would be incredible.

Undead might be playable because they are a separate race from the Risen. Palawa Joko is the lord of the undead, while the Risen are from the dragons.

1. Tengu: My absolute favorite GW race. If Cantha could slip out of its autocracy in an expansion, we could get a story here.
2. Forgotten: I at least hope we can see what happened to them between games; it’d be really cool to do that through a separate campaign. Edit: I could see a Naga/Margonite thing here, but I don’t see how either would much relate to Tyria.
3. Seer: Rematch between the Blade and the Mantle, anyone? That’s probably taking it a bit too far, but I like to be optimistic.

Undead might be playable because they are a separate race from the Risen. Palawa Joko is the lord of the undead, while the Risen are from the dragons.

Issue is that undead aren’t really a race.

They’re just various races reanimated.

Not sure what “relate to Tyria” has to do with it, but seers are (almost?) extinct, and the forgotten seem to be gone (from world Tyria) too given how none helped Glint when Kralkatorrik awoke.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Besides that, not all classes would make sense for undead. While there were undead rangers in GW1, they never used pets (and if a few did, which I may forgot about, I bet their pets weren’t alive anymore) and I doubt living pets would follow an undead master. I also doubt Anet would give us an undead re-skin for every pet.

As I said before, I wouldn’t hesitate a second to play a servant of Joko, if given the opportunity. He’s one of my favorite characters in GW’s lore.

You don’t win friends with salad! Sorry I just got caught up in the rhythm.

I have wanted to be a 4 legged race for years but because of mounts people didn’t think it was possible. This game has no mounts. I WANT 4 LEGS NOA.
