It seems like everyone else hates Scarlet.

But I think the character is interesting, find her dialogue hilarious, have been generally enjoying the story, and am curious to see how it ends.

Does anyone else like the Scarlet arc?

Yes, I do. I understand where some critics are coming from, but I don’t often agree.

However, I’d caution you to be careful with what you support around these forums. You could be quickly crushed into a moist pulp for liking Scarlet.

You just see a lot of the anti-scarlet fans because people who don’t have a problem don’t usually find the need to express themselves not having a problem.

I just can’t stand the idea of an omnipotent antagonist who doesn’t really have too many reasons to choose us as her protagonist.

Or at least, it hasn’t been shown yet. Which makes it really hard to attach to the story.
That in combination with slow story telling…

I think the best answer with regards to Scarlet is. Her face isn’t on the box! That pretty much sums up the current GW2 experience.

If I bought the Texas Chainsaw blu-ray based on the cover and it turned out to be a film about fishing. Would I be kitten ed? Probably

I’d like her more if she was the comic relief. You know the part that offsets the evilness of the main evil character, but she IS the main evil character in these story arcs.

The hatred for Scarlet is over exaggerated. She isn’t that bad. Personally, GW2’s story doesn’t really bother me anyway. I play it for the combat and pve/pvp.

I don’t dislike her. I don’t like her either.

I do like all the supporting characters though – even the minor ones such as the quaggans, asura, and sylvari around the camp.

I like her. She should be the final boss of a new PERMANENT dungeon at the end of the living story

I love scarlet. Still lots of mysteries surrounding her.

I hope the last 4 updates are grand!

I like Scarlet for the most part. I like her personality well enough, I like her character design, I like the overall idea that she’s seen something that she couldn’t handle and it drove her insane, and I’m intruiged to see what her ultimate plan is.

The only aspect of her I really dislike is her completely unbelievable backstory where she’s like the smartest being in the entire universe multiple times over. I mean, seriously? Studied under and “mastered” Sylvari, Charr, Norn, and Hylek crafts AND graduated all 3 Asuran colleges (which Asura themselves rarely do) in what, maybe 20 years? That’s ridiculously unbelievable.

There’s no reason for people that enjoy content to complain about it on forums. Making new threads just to say you like content isn’t gonna improve the game. So that’s why we see only hate on Scarlet. And I like her too

Quite honestly, even though she is getting a little annoying, she can be interesting. I’m not happy with the whole “she is crazy” angle, because I’d like to rather see her as indifferent to what the pale tree wants, which led her to walk her own path, and in turn her experiences only made her conviction stronger.

As said in above comments, its not necessarily Scarlet people hate. Take any villain, even Elder Dragons and you’d still have the same issue, because its the living story itself that is the issue. I’m excited and hopeful for the next season though, because people make mistakes. Arenanet made mistakes and they will in future as well, but that is natural. You try things out to see what works and what doesn’t. You learn from your mistakes and do a better job next time.

I’m happy its only Scarlet right now, because its the first season. They have to figure so many things out through feedback, so its natural it isn’t as strong as it could be. Imagine it was something taken from old lore… the disappointment would most likely be even bigger.

Why I don’t like Scarlet has to do with the fact that anything possibly interesting about her is not conveyed to us – it’s a product of my speculating and grasping at straws.

There is no challenger or rival or companion or bystander to function as a lens to her character – to be an “in-between” or “opposite” or anything to give us more information about her and who she is “as a person” or what she might have “seen” and what Grand Plans she wishes to disrupt or control. There are no seeds planted in our minds that perhaps she is being used, herself – an impossible, unbelievable girl that was created as a means to an end of someone much more powerful.

There is nothing. We are shown actions and a shallow personality that conveys little. I’m not saying that she was created as a shallow, hollow character – but that’s all I’m getting. If there’s more, we need to experience that.

That is possibly becoming interesting. That is opening the door for knowing more about her and to character development.

Perhaps there will be a “reveal” and it will be that someone has been pulling the strings (which many seem to suspect) and like Winston Niles Rumfoord or The Master from New Who (both similar concepts that were executed well – the person that “saw everything” and went cocopuffs (and in their cases turned out to be a pawn to a far larger scheme than they could have imagined)) we will watch her character flounder, destruct, or evolve when this becomes known to her. Watching the one who thinks they are all-powerful suddenly know they are a pawn can be interesting and satisfying – and watching how they take it and what they choose to do next.

But if this is anywhere on the right track, we need to know this in-game. We need hints. We need to hear her more than just giggles and taunts and nothings. I want to hear about her philosophy and what she thinks she’s doing and why she thinks she’s right, and who she thinks she’s up against – who is the shape in the dark that she might awaken ? If we are all in danger because of her poking around in things – give us hints. Show us something to be afraid of. Make us fear her philosophy and drive, but show us why we must stop her, because of what her actions could unleash. Have her empower her followers with knowledge that under her they too can have a piece of what she’s grasping for – make her someone to fear because of what she inspires in others, not just selfish ambition without any real given reason behind it. Give us enough that we want to know more, that we can start to really sink our teeth in – give us enough that we care and feel apprehension.

I think she has potential – certainly, I just dislike that her execution is as like a full character as a cardboard cut-out is to being an actual celebrity.

I’m sorry. I love this game and the LS – I’m just saying this because I want to provide feedback so that maybe it can get better – though I doubt a post buried in this thread will really “reach” anyone, it’s nice to just let off a little steam, too.

Scarlet didn’t sweep me off my feet but I don’t mind her.

The open Scarlet hate is massively getting on my nerves though. How many “when will she dieeeee”-threads do we need?

I too like Scarlet and have continued to say so since her introduction.

I enjoy her back story and everything that has happened in the LS. It’s been fun and entertaining and that’s basically all I’m looking for in my video games.

I stopped being serious about gaming when I stopped playing COD and MLG Events.

I don’t hate her by any means, and some of what she says is pretty funny. But, I do feel like much of her story flies directly in the face of existing lore and that makes me unhappy with the story arc.

I bounce between liking her and not minding her. I’ve never hated her. I can see why some would dislike her, though the amount of pure vitriol spewed out about her I most chalk up to hyperbole.

Yeah, no. I never wanted to be Darth Vader, and Voldemort was a dull two-dimensional villain.

I don’t mind her voice acting and character when it’s on screen. The problem is that she’s just got to be such a nemesis all the time. So in the Thaumanova reactor there could be Inquest scientists who tell us what’s going on while we save the plant with them, but no, Scarlet has to be there herself to explain all the plot and vanish out just in time, as always.

It’s not that she’s THAT bad. It’s rather that she’s a bit out of place and doesn’t fit in the rest of the lore. People are interested in the story they already started.

Also, at start I didn’t have any problems with her. But with her omnipresence being in every single update and behind ‘everything’ makes it a bit annoying.

I think though that they her story leads us into something with the existing lore.

I don’t hate Scarlet as a main villain per se, I think she is just completely misplaced and stretched to far.

I think its more about the fact that GW2 was supposed to be about the dragon threat and that Scarlet series is going on for a year without any interesting plot twist or conclusion. It simply takes waaaay too long…

Now, I bet the big reveal we will get in 2014 will be that Scarlet used those alliances to weaken involved factions so she can then start her real big war plan without having to fight those factions who could give some resistance.

Then Scarlet is the dragon super boss, maybe even some kind of a good dragon trying to make the world a better place or…aaaw…whatever. It will be some cheap twist in a twist in a twist, so those who propbably also loved that “Lost” series will think…“uuh, thats soooo aaawesome, who would have thought that!?!?!”

I hope I will be proven wrong, because I just made that up in those few minutes while writing this post.

She’s about an effective villain as a mosquito buzzing around my head, I want it to go away, I don’t hate it personally, it just an annoying pest. Its neither interesting to me nor dangerous.

I’m fine with Scarlet. I’ve been reading everything I can bout her and the more I find out the more intrigued I get. Her backstory was interesting and gave her a little background, in that she doesn’t want anyone to tell her who she has to be. And then when you ask the Pale Tree about her she talk about how Scarlet is trying to defy her destiny. This so called “destiny” has piqued my interest and I’d like to know more about what she was like before she truly went mad.

The big problem that people have is that they don’t bother trying to understand her. They don’t go out of their way to read the backstories. This current LS patch is the first real time anything about her past has even been mentioned ingame which, no offense, was a bit of a fail on anet’s part. Had people been able to understand her when she first showed up, then maybe she wouldn’t be quite so hated now.

Funny you should mention this. I did have a thought a couple a weeks ago of how cool it would be if the answer to the question of what Scarlet saw in the eternal mists is that she saw that she’s a fictional character in a video game.

I’ve liked her for the most part, but I think some people touched on the problems she has that could ahve been done better such as her deeper story never coming to light even as hints. I know they are saving most of that for the finale, but there was nothing added thus far to flesh her out much other than some backstory released on the website. Don’t get me wrong, I really love backstory articles, but there also needs to be more in-game to let us experience it. All that being said, I still like her. I do wish we got to actually see more of her dark side that we only get to see or hear little snips of at the ends of her dialogue occasionally. She gets a little too silly sometimes. Overall she does what they intended i think: makes people hate her, to be our dreaded nemesis. Since this si only the first season of living story it gives me high hopes for the furture of it for this one reason:

If Scarlet, being the type of character she is, can be this much of a thorn in our sides (pun may or may not be intended there) how much more can a more fleshed out and aggressive villian be in the next chapter? Food for thought.

As a character, I like Scarlet now….after her devious, egotistical, bent-on-achieving-greatness, side came out. When she was just a shallow, perfect, flawless, crazy nut with a maniac’s laugh, I wanted a different villian. She was, as you’d call it, a Mary Sue.

It’s one thing to be an calculating villian who strives for greatness at the cost of others, and believes themselves to be above all. It’s another when they actually are.

Yeah, I really like Scarlet. I just really like all the power she has at her disposal. I can’t wait to see what her end game is.

The core of the character is fine. It is really her role in the story that makes us shudder.

Not only am I OK with Scarlet and not the least bit annoyed by her, but I’ve never had a problem with Trahearne either. For that matter, I’m pretty much never in agreement with the majority of GW2 forumers. They’re far more annoying to me than any character in the game.
