Hello, I’ve been bothered a bit recently by the lack of expansions. At first I did not mind the base game, because I had much to do. But 2 years in and I get bored. Guild Wars 2 was originally intended to be about fighting the dragons. Which is what I want to do. I was occupied with the Living Story for a little, but after the destruction of Lion’s Arch I was both unimpressed and annoyed. At that time I haven’t even heard anything about an expansion. I assume (and hope) that the Living Story is leading into a fight with Mordremoth. But I still have heard nothing about ArenaNet even working on it.

I really look forward to seeing an expansion, and I especially hope to see it soon. The Living Story is free content, which I appreciate, but it’s lacking lore. And straying from the original topic of the game. As I have addressed before, I want an expansion. I’m tired of the Living Story. So can I at least get my faith in ArenaNet back by getting clarification that there ‘will’ be an expansion in the near future?

Anet said they don’t want to go into expansions with GW2 like they did in GW1, one of the reasons being they feel they are “culturally insensitive” (Cantha=Asia Elona=African)

You’re mixing things up. By direct decision of NCSoft, ANet cannot make expansions TO DO with past continents, because it is culturally insensitive, yes. It is kitten, but the reason why they’re not wanting to go into expansions has to do with their Game Design Philosophy. For GW2 to live to it’s manifesto it cannot focus solely on the traditional expansions. Content every 6 months or so will not bring a “Living, Breathing World” which is what ANet is working hard to achieve. As they get the hang of the LS/LW content delivery model, I guess we’ll start seeing better and meatier content along with the LS. During these 2 years they’ve improved a lot, and it’s great to see them improve on it too.
That said, they can still do expansions if they wish to, just not to do with past continents that had very specific cultural themes. They want GW2 to be culturally universal(All main races in alliance).

To note: It has been confirmed by Colin Johanson in the Eurogamer interview back in January that ANet besides having a team of around 20 people working in rotations for the LS/LW, they have otehr teams working on “two big background projects”, so we’ll see.

So…Asia and Africa are specific cultural themes, while Europe/Murica is universal? What kind of EGO is that?

I believe during an interview a while ago they said Cantha and Elona are still on the table. Living Story is far better than expansions because we don’t have to fork over $60 for new content. Plus there are some players who wouldn’t be able to afford the expansion right away and with living story everyone will be able to experience the content at same time.

I know right? I can’t imagine the ego that a Korean company like NCSoft must have to limit a company from expanding past the borders of their first game.

I think the living world is a great idea BUT I also want expansions. The only thing is they would have to simultaneously be doing the living world AND putting out the expansion to get the best possible effect from it.

I don’t think new players will come to guild wars 2 because of the living world but if they are drawn to it by an expansion they could see the living world in action and it might convince them to stay

An expansion will be available in 2015.

This was made aware by looking at NcSoft’s economic projections sheet.

I see. So it is possible/likely we will be seeing a new dragon fight eventually. Because after all, that is what this game is about. And I got bored out of my mind dealing with the living story. Though it has gotten better, and I am extremely gracious it’s free, I don’t feel it’s keeping people playing the game. Without an expansion, or some type of big content release the game will be dead. I love the game, but it needs a big content release. I think the Living Story is a good idea, but ArenaNet should not be putting all of their focus on it. And by what you guys are saying (thankfully) they aren’t.

There has to be an expansion in the works. If you were a player who played the game for a few months after launch before moving on and then came back today to see what new content there is to experience, there is pitifully little new to see.

The LS content itself was always extremely short on actual content.

The studio is at least as big as it was during development and, presumably content creation became more efficient with experience.

ANet should easily have been able to expand existing content and play space by 50% in two years. Living story can’t be more than the equivalent of 5-10% of the studio’s expected productivity over the last two years.

So, that additional productivity had to have gone some where!

Some of that might have been sucked up translating the game for China, assuming localization wasn’t mostly handled by the publisher, but there still should have been enough resources for serious work on expansion material.

(The other possibility is the studio working on another game, but I find that hard to believe. NCSoft already has a full stable).

I’m just hoping that LS has been so lackluster because the best developers have been focused on the expansion. An expansion is going to have to be at least as good as the original content and the LS has been orders of magnitude worse than the content the game launched with.

Which is complete crap because Cantha and Elona both had very rich cultures and lore that contributed very positively to the Guild Wars universe. What exactly is “culturally insensitive”? Just because they were Asian and African themed? Just the fact that they aren’t the boring, generic human culture we have in GW2?

Yeah, I want an expansion too, or at least a better method of delivering the story content. ANET made the statement that LS would deliver an expansion pack’s worth of content, but I really don’t feel it has. And with Season 2, the idea of 2 weeks or 2 months between story updates is simply ridiculous. This isn’t Season 1 anymore and as a result that content delivery timeline just doesn’t work. Season 2 has been phenomenal in my opinion so far from a story perspective. But its far too slow for this type of content. The season 1 zerg fests, 2 weeks was fine sure, but not the story driven season 2.

The asian country relations are still really tense, for those who don’t know. Also, chinese/japanese/koreans are kind of sensitive about those things, I think. Because the memory there is still fresh about what happened in the past, and China is a market they’re trying to conquer, there is a problem with releasing past continents.

As far as I know newer generations are less rascist so we’ll have to see what they decide to do, but I think that’s their main problem and that’s part of why NCsoft refused that (maybe because they’re korean themselves, though, yeah).
There is no problem between America and Europe, we get along fine, also we’re continents in which there have been a lot of immigration, we’re less sensitive and the past is the past anyways. Asian countries have been under much less cultural mix and they remember more than we do.

Has there ever been any direct evidence about NCSoft forbidding returning to Cantha or Elona other than hearsay over the fate of the Canthan District in Divinity’s Reach? I have a feeling we’re witnessing something akin to apotheosis…

Oh this again… there is literally no evidence of this! If there is please provide a link.

So…Asia and Africa are specific cultural themes, while Europe/Murica is universal? What kind of EGO is that?

As someone who lives in Africa I’m more bothered by the implication that Africa has a theme at all. It’s a continent people, big place lot of variety.
Also as I’ve previously said, this is not a fact this is people making stuff up.

Culturally insensitive?

Again, this is part of the conspiracy theory revolving around ANet being controlled by those evil evil NCSoft people who are apparently extremely ashamed for their Asian origins.

Which is complete crap

My opinion as well, also… no kitten?

Well, I do think there might be a bit of weight to the theory that east Asia was upset over Cantha since it kind of blended all the cultures together, and that might have upset each country in their own distinct way. There may not be any paper (or electronic) evidence to this effect, but it’s one of the more credible assumptions one could make.

So…Asia and Africa are specific cultural themes, while Europe/Murica is universal? What kind of EGO is that?

Also as I’ve previously said, this is not a fact this is people making stuff up.

Sadly, to most North Americans, Africa is this one, anomalous blob of similar cultures, and they are rarely seen distinctly, aside from perhaps the odd Egyptian theme. That is probably our fault, but I have no idea how to take steps to correct this.

I would like to see Elona return one day, though. For one thing, it is clearly far closer to Tyria than Cantha is, just a short trip across the desert. For another, I really, really liked the Vabbi landscape. The floating fountains, the middle-eastern decor, that theatre. Plus, we owe Palawa Joko a good sock to his undead jaw. I bet he’d have helped kill Zhaitan, so long as he wasn’t a champion himself. (Then again, after Glint, anything is possible.)

I just wish that they would say yes or no for this whole expansion debate.
Saying yes, doesn’t mean that they have to say when it’s done or what expansion it is. Just knowing that it is coming at some point would satisfy me, for couple of years at least.

This whole secrecy thing is really just starting all kinds of conspiracy theories and can’t be healthy for their revenue.

New conspiracy theory here. Their other teams are really working on mobile version of GW2 that will come out on Apple ios on 2015 and on Android on 2019. There will never be a expansion, just new game.

It’s fun to see the issue come back regularly. Especially since it is quickly abandon despite the constructive nature it involves.
It is in this kind of discution we see the real expectations of the players.

Pros and cons are regular, but ultimately the players all want actually: from contained. On evolutions. Discoveries.
It’s sad that ArenaNet simply do not respond.
