You haven’t done the whole map. The hearts are a tiny part of the map. You need to fully explore, do events, gather materials from nodes, craft stuff, everything. The hearts are vestigial sign posts for people in need of classic quest hubs.

If you look at the daily achieves and try to do 5 of them (you can do less, or more), you get a good xp bump for each one plus more for finishing the 5th one. Even low characters can do them. I tend to do them on whatever alt I’m leveling and generally get a lot of a level in a few minutes thanks to those.

Killing mobs that aren’t part of an event or a heart is probably the slowest possible xp source out there, btw. Use them to skill up weapons or to earn credit for other things, but do not expect to see your xp progress just because you killed ten centaurs.

I know I don’t said I do this kind of thing. And when I said that I explore the map, I explore it by doing all the hearts, POI’s, SP & WP, and I did harvest/mine/gather everything in my way, probably not everything, but a lot. And I did this in those two maps that I explored.

So you say I’m in the good way? I should now go to Kassex Hills and explore it, and when I feel that I weak for the hearts just go to another map and start it and than came back? and just every zone that I move to I should explore to the end at least two maps? This is the fastest way to level to 80? and do dungeons in the way?

About crafting I don’t sure, I’m a human ranger which profession do you think I should take? and how I train those crafting effectively? Because I’m sure that I can’t train it effectively with items that I earn from drops and more. And which professions should I take? that will give me money/XP.. or something

Why are you so focused on levelling up instead of enjoying the game?

I am a bit confused because you seem to keep posting about how you can’t level up, even though you will be doing these same things at lv80. This is the game. The only thing that will change at max level is more farming and bosses, and maybe running a dungeon or fractal or two here and there.

If all you want is WvW, you don’t have to wait, you can go do that now and it automatically scales you up to lv80. Same for PvP.

Otherwise, just explore and enjoy it while you can. This game just gives you free experience for everything that you do. But if you really can’t stand the levelling curve anymore, buy XP boosters from gem store or laurel merchant, use +XP foods, get a guild to drop an XP booster guild banner for you, etc.

For ultimate cheap levelling, you can run the Queensdale champ train.

By the way, I think you’re misunderstanding levels. You can participate in zones up to five levels above you if you wear proper gear and play good. If you are dying alot then it means you need to rethink your gameplay, not gain levels.

I love levelling rangers.. 1 @ 80, 1 @ 70, 2-3 in the 20’s and 1 @ 4 right now. I always use lb/sb because I like the mix of long range to stay out of danger and fast firing for lots of tags.

Maybe this isn’t the recommended approach, but it works for me. I have 80’s in all classes and Ranger is my favourite, even though I spend more time on my guardian.

Swiftness is vitally important.

How should I train my Ranger? for level 80?

In a few days, the whole trait points system is going to be different, including the ability to change trait points at no charge.

Right now, I use traits that increase range for bows, and especially important to me is piercing shot (or whatever it is), which means that if you target enemies at the back of the mob, you will also damage enemies between yourself and the target. Circling the group and firing this way often catches me more tagged enemies than dropping an AOE trap. More tagged enemies = more loot opportunities.

If you need a challenge, try to run through higher level areas grabbing waypoints without getting insta-killed by the high level mobs

Rez downed players in event circles to get rewards when they are completed (you can be anywhere on the map when the event ends, as long as you don’t leave the map).

Yes do Dungeons when you can.

For a Ranger crafting would be either Huntsman or Weaponsmith depending on what weapons you’re using and Leatherworker for armor.

Crafting is easy to level up. Each recipe tells you what you need to make the basic components (inscriptions and weapon parts) then you combine these in the discovery tab (there are 4 tabs when you open a crafting window. Discovery is the top one)

Yes, but I don’t think that I would crafting a lot and discover a lot and basically train it a lot to higher levels with items that I get from droping. I’m selling all my items that I get from drops, that should be the items for crafting so I don’t know what to do, because I think that those items don’t really level me up in crafting, its very low amount of them.
And all the players here told me to not useing bows, only greatswords/swords/axes/horns, so I will go on Weaponsmith.

If anything for normal power builds, longbow/shortbow > greatsword since in pretty much any situation, the sword weapon already surpasses the greatsword in nearly every way…

But yeah, not that much point getting a profession for only that alone.

If you want to craft then stop selling everything. Salvage any weapons or armor that you get from drops and can’t use and you’ll have enough materials to craft for a few levels.

Okay thanks for the help guys, for now I choose the profession of Weaponsmith and Leatherworking.

Now I got in the game good sword so I decided to see how I play with it as a ranger, and I bought nice warhorn. You said that rangers here are better with swords/greatswords so I tried to play with both of them. I don’t know how it goes, I dont feel like this is the good way, you sure that I shouldn’t play with bows? It will not be better?

And now I’m just exploring maps and do the story missions, I asked a lot about the leveling because evey zone I get into, I can’t finishing it because I find myself weak and low level to the rest of the heart missions, and when I try to do them I fail because a lot of creatures attacking me and I’m dead very quickly.

I just dont understand why its like this, like Queensdale is zone to 1-17 but it gets me leveled only to 12 and I had to move to CaledonFOrest and finish it to level up to 15 and than just finish Queensdale, this is works like that or I do something wrong? I finished Caledon Forest and Queensdale and I get to level 16 only, after I’ve done everything almost, I’m trying to harvest and mining everything in my way.
This is how the game works? I’m in the good way?

By the way, my bank is full and I don’t know what to keep and what not, I saved all my collectibles and I do use Salvage Kit, but when I need to start doing crafting?
And I choose the Marksman trait, but I don’t know how to buy skill points and how to build my character trait. Help please?

This game does not have the traditional roles. The mages in this game can wield axes, daggers and greatswords and the soldier classes can wield staves, rifles and bows. Everything works here. Bows are fine, but melee weapons do more DPS usually. I think that’s why everyone says go sword (I don’t know, I don’t have a Ranger myself).

Yes you’re doing fine. The level range is made so you don’t wander to a level 50 area as a level 10, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will actually end up at level 17 if you play in that map.

- destory (quest) trophies
- Sell stuff that has a grey name (this is “junk”, if you go to a Merchant, hit the sell tab there will be a button to sell it all at once)
- Salvage gear and weapon drops or sell it on the TP, whatever floats your boat. It’s possible that the materials you get from salvaging are worth more than the gear piece. If you want to craft, salvage and keep the materials.
- Start crafting whenever you want. I wouldn’t spend money on it as a newbie, just craft with what you find/salvage.
- You get a skill point every time you level up and you get them as drops in the open world (I think from chests/champions, I’m not sure, never paid attention).

Okay so I will just keep exploreing and do dungeons when I could.
I keep the materials from the salvaging, maybe in the higher levels I will craft.
I just don’t know how to play, melee or range, what is better or how to make it better if I choose range for example, how to do it right and be strong with it.
And how to build my trait? I sped 8 points on Marsman its good? I found it the best helpful right now.
And which maps you recommend me to do? Because every map that you finish gives you different items, and I get items that I can’t wear, maybe I should do maps that will give me good gear for me – Ranger gear.

Hello guys, I have a Human Ranger level 4 and I’ve already did the heart missions to levels 1-6 in Queensdale and I can’t do the heart missions to level 7+ because its hard.
How can I level up from this point? how I should level up basically? just find new maps and doing heart missions? or there are some maps that I should level up there and not “find” by myself?
Can you please help me with this?

And I’m fighting right now with 2 axes that I throw on enemies, I should buy a bow or something? when I will use a bow?

Thanks for helping, Tal

I too found this problem, in all starting areas… Unless you do the Storyline (which gives a lot of XP and I think is the main way they want you to discover the world and learn how to play your character at first) and explore and mess about in the area, there is a ‘gap’ in the levelling process and I always got stuck at a point where, the next area is took hard/high level and there isn’t much left to do in the region portion that is around the same level.

Making my next few characters, I did the Storyline more and did Hearts just on the side, instead of it being the main thing/only thing I was doing, and then I had no problem moving through the other parts of the starting region and on to the next territory.

I hope that helps others out too!

So what do you recommend me to do? Just do the storyline missions when I can and don’t wait with it? and continue exploring the areas in the map?
You have been in this situations that you have to move to another map of the same zone level and start it from the beginning to level up more and than go back and finish the first map you started? And you had only moved once or you had move to more maps to level up? or one map was just fine?

Did you gear up properly? Have you bought any trinkets?

I didn’t buy anything. The gear I’m useing is gear from beggining/drops or merchants that I bought, and my weapons is from merchant ir TP, for a low price of course.
Why? How my gear supposed to look like?

Maybe it will b easier if I just upload image with my gear and stats?

Can I ask if you are killing things as you explore? There is an lot of XP to be made from killing mobs in the open world, in particular killing those whose name appears in yellow that don’t attack you unless you attack them. The longer a mob is out in the open world without being killed by a player the more bonus XP it gives, so always kill the things that are standing in your path.

Also, you really should make sure that at all times you have a food item and a potion item in use – these will give a minimum of 10% extra XP per kill – so that’s an extra 20% if you are running both. You can get food items (have an apple icon) and potions (have a wrench icon) from vendors in cities and karma vendors out on maps, you can also buy them off the TP but make sure they are appropriate for your level.

Trading post. 15% bonus XP, a little regen and cheap. That will be good enough.

It’s only increase the experience from kills, no bonus from events etc and since it’s last long enough (45 min) it’s worth the small investment.

RavenClaw hope you start having more fun.

My first character was a ranger. Even though other weapons may give more damage and have better abilities I like playing with a longbow and a greatsword. They are fine for leveling up and exploring the zones. It is only if you start playing dungeons or small group missions that you need to consider how to best fit into a group. You should learn the skills for all your weapons and get comfortable using them. But you decide which weapons you like.

When you start a new hero and are in the starting zone for your race the first thing to do is buy a salvaging kit and gathering tools. Then talk to the nearest scout (marked with binoculars). They will show you the heart quests in order of difficulty. Go toward the first one gathering along the way, visiting POIs, viewing vistas, completing skill challenges and especially participating in any dynamic events (DEs). You get XP when the DE is successfully completed and it often contributes toward the nearest heart quest, which you will be getting XP for doing also. So you are “killing two birds with one stone”.

If you have completed the zone but are not ready for the next level zone for your race go to the starting area of another race. If in Queensdale go to Divinity’s Reach. Take the Asura gate for Lion’s Arch. Since LA was destroyed recently you will end up at the Vigil’s Keep in Gendarran Fields. From there take an Asura gate to another race’s city. From there find the Asura gate to their starting area. Complete it. And so on.

I got an Asura mesmer to level 80 by 100%ing Metrica Prov., Caledon Forest, Plains of Ashford, Queensdale, Lornar’s Pass, Gendarran Fields, Hoelbrak, Black Cidadel and Rata Sum. She participated in the Living Story in Lion’s Arch. Then reached level 80 about the time she 100%ed Frostgorge Sound. She got a few levels from crafting, a little from personal story, and some XP from doing dailies. None of my other heroes leveled this way.

My guardian started out at level 20 (from a scroll earned from achievement chests mainly earned by other of my characters). He got a lot of XP from personal story, participating in the toxic events and Lion’s Arch Living Story, 100%ing every city, Queensdale, Wayfarer Foothills, Snowden Drifts and Lornar’s Pass, plus crafting and dailies.

Each of my 7 level 80 characters have leveled up differently doing whatever I felt like doing at the time. My first four level 80’s I concentrated on getting to level 400 in all 8 crafting trades. So do what you feel like doing. You can read up to find out more efficient ways of doing stuff but you will learn as you spend more time.

For crafting: refine all you materials when you first start a new tier while you still get crafting XP for it. Then make the basic stuff you will need to finish the tier while you still get XP for it. But the most XP comes from discovering new recipes.

Use gems to buy slots in you pack and for expanding your bank. Craft or buy larger bags for you pack.

Good luck and have fun!

Yes, if you are going out of your way to kill the things around you as you explore then the extra 10%-20% XP you gain especially if they have large bonus XP from being alive for a while will really make a difference.

Some of those coin vendors you see will sell food items, karma vendors usually have a purple triangle icon above them or marking them on the map. You can also go back to the hearts you have already completed. Once you have completed the heart the NPC there becomes a karma vendor selling a variety of items which may include armours, weapons, accessories and food/potion items. Always worth checking to see what they sell and if you can use it to boost your leveling.

Thanks for helping! Don’t misunderstand me, I have fun when I’m playing and I’m enjoying the game, recently my friends come to play with me. i just wanted to be sure that I’m doing right, I have a problem with things that I do not doing them right and than I screw up (like less modern levels, you couldn’t change your trait points so if you did a mistake when you was a newbie, you screwed up).

And how did you get level 80 almost only doing the starting zones? Its faster to do more difficulty zones for more XP no?

And what is it this Lion’s Arch storyline?

Sorry if I’m writing wrong, English is not my basic language so I’m trying the best and maybe with all those questions and a little bit desperate I might present this as hopeless or not having fun while playing, so it’s just my writing and the lack of the ability of explaining myself.
Recently I convince my friends to play with me, one from my country and one friend that moved to Serbia and I saved contact with him – Gaming is the best thing to save good relationships with good friends

Ravenclaw, there is no “wrong” way of playing the game. There is also no “best” way of playing the game.

If you are having fun with what you are doing, you are doing it right. Everything gives you experience (not just killing and hearts). You get XP for reviving players and NPCs. You get XP for uncovering new parts of the map. You get XP for achieving goals in WvW. You get XP for participating in events that you find along the way. You get XP for completing daily achievements. You get XP for gathering. You get XP for crafting. You get XP for doing your Personal Story. You get XP for everything.

The only advice I can give is to try out new things. Try out shortbow. Try out longbow. Try out underwater combat. Try out crafting. Try out WvW. Try out exploring new areas (appropriate to your level).
This will help you find the things that you like to do. And if you do the things you like to do, you will gradually level up until you are 80.

The goal of the game is not reaching level 80. The goal is to have fun while doing the things that the game offers.

And you should know that the zones were designed so that 1 zone is NOT enough to level you to the next tier. Just Queensdale is not enough to reach level 17. That is because you are encouraged to do other things as well, like visit other 1-15 zones (or 15-25 zones), or craft, or WvW, or do personal story, etc.

In which level can I start doing dungeons and WvW?

And when I should starting with crafting? because I don’t have many materials and I think that I low level right now for crafting, because I will have to be more “rich” to buy materials for train it as good as possible, and not one day a week go to crafting station and do 5 to 10 things in crafting.

Dungeons:
Your first story dungeon becomes available at level 31. (If you do the personal story, you will start receiving in-game mails from iconic NPCs inviting you to the dungeons that show you where to find the entrances.) Every 10 levels or so, another dungeon becomes available. There are 8 in total, and most are available in the level 70-80 range.
After you completed a story version of the dungeons. the exploration mode of the dungeon becomes available. Exploration mode is harder and has a higher level requirement. What level is needed is mentioned when you approach the dungeon entrance. Generally, exploration mode is mostly done by level 80 groups only, though.

There is also a dungeon-like thing called “Fractals of the Mists”, which can be a lot of fun. The lower difficulty levels are doable at lower levels, but again, usually only level 80 players are looking for groups.

World versus World:
You can start playing World versus World from level 2 onwards, if you want to. Just press B in-game to choose a map to enter.
You will be “uplevelled” to 80 for as long as you remain in the WvW-zones. This means your basic stats are raised to those of level 80, and your gear is temporarily enhanced too. You will be far inferior to a “real” level 80 in WvW, though, because you don’t have exotic gear and no traits at lower levels. Still, it is possible to participate by joining large groups, or by defending towers and keeps with siege equipment.

Crafting:
The moment to start crafting is up to you. It depends on whether you want to spend any gold on it, or just want to craft with what you gather. Bear in mind, though, that the items you craft at a low crafting level are suitable for low-level characters (starting at level 5 equipment). If you want to be able to craft items for your character level, you should progress your crafting.
The guideline is that for every 25 crafting levels, you will gain the ability to craft items for a character of 5 levels higher. So at crafting 0 craft, you can craft level 5 equipment, at 25 craft, you can craft level 10 equipment, etc.
Starting developing crafting early allows you to use it to craft suitable equipment for yourself as you level. Starting it later means you will have more materials to work with. The choice is up to you.

I did some activity in other higher zones but did not 100% them. I play with my sister so sometimes I will accompany her where she wants to go. We don’t always like to do the same achievements to get our daily rewards. For example she does not like jumping puzzles at all whereas I like them, even if I am not that good. Also I will go to some places where it is easier to get a particular daily achievement. Getting the various daily achievements has gotten me to move my heroes around to various zones on the map, even if I don’t 100% them.

Getting your daily requirements give rewards. One reward is a laurel. They are not that important right now but when your hero gets to level 80 you can go to the laurel vendor and use them to buy ascended amulets, earrings and rings. Each of those things costs around 35 laurel or so. Plus getting your daily and monthly achievements gives XP, karma and coins.

There are special temporary events going on almost every month. Around Christmas time is Wintersday Festival. There was Halloween, etc. Other months there was introduced living story events. It was a series of invasions to different zones of the map. It culminated in an attack on Lion’s Arch, which is the main hub of this whole world. LA was destroyed and burning and filled with attacking mobs. Everyone was leveled up to 80. I took a level 80 hero there at first but then started to take my lower level ones, like my guardian and mesmer. They both got a lot of XP in those fights.

My earliest heroes (ranger, elementalist and my first mesmer) got some XP in WvW where they100%ed those zones.

Plus with my ranger I traveled around to various places to acquire pets. In the process I explored those areas, even if I did not 100% the zone.

In case you didn’t know there is a quick, easy and cheap (free) way to get to Lion’s Arch (well actual to Vigil Keep now that LA is destroyed). Click on the crossed swords at the top of the screen and go to Heart of the Mists. Explore that area if you haven’t already. It is the PvP area. But to get to LA (or Vigil’s Keep) run straight across and go through the Asura gate that says to Lion’s Arch.

From Lion’s Arch (Vigil’s Keep) there are Asura gates to many zones.

Lion’s Arch is not the zone that called Gandarren Fields with the asura gates to the main cities? And why you recommend me to explore this zone (Hearts of the Mists)?

And about crafting, I don’t want to craft right now because I don’t have lot of materials to level it well and fast, and don’t have the gold for it. So I think I will start at higher level.

And Lazuli, which character do you like the most? and why?

Lion’s Arch was the “main city” of the game. You can still see it on the map and go there, but it got destroyed by a villain and everything got evacuated to Gendarran Fields, in the Vigil Keep. So the Vigil Keep is the temporary “main place” now.

Waypointing costs gold, but if you go to Hearts of the Mist you will find a portal that takes you to the Vigil Keep for free. So you save on waypointing costs. C:

Lol OK
So I will play on my own for a while, learn the game and leveling.
For now, just exploring zones and do events and personal story and gather things and do that things for leveling? for now its the best for me? this is the way you guys leveled up? and there are specific zones I should explore or just what I want to? (I mean specific zones I should explore for things that will help me or something special), this is the way I should go right?

Yep, and story dungeons if you like. Explorable dungeons are doable too but can be a little more tricky as a newbie. You can check out WvW too and follow the commander, this is also a way to get exp. I think you get exp tomes in sPvP now too, but not sure about that. Basically do what you like, you will not miss out on anything.

All zones of the same level range give the same stuff, it’s just a different atmosphere.

I meant if I finish for example the zone Kessex Hills, I will get a great stuff for elemental, but if I will finish Brisban Wildlands I will get a good LB or Sword that will help me somehow.. so there is a different?

No, you get random stuff. The higher level the zone is, the better the rewards.

I’m level 24, I’m not certain what to do.
Explore Barisban Wildlands to level to higher level that fits Ganderren Fields, or continye exploring Ganderren Fields and when it becomes hard to explore Barisban Wildlands?

My favorite is mesmer. Next is elementalist. Then would be ranger, warrior and guardian. I have at least one of every profession and as I learn more about each one I start enjoying them more.

One of the reasons that I like mesmer is that they can use quite a few different weapons and there are different ways to configure mesmers so there are different play styles. But mostly because I find them fun to play.
