Hello! I am completely new to MMOs and to PC games as well lol. I am already an alt-aholic which I suppose explains why I don’t have any characters at 80 lol. I am still learning the ropes, so I can use all the help I can get heehee.

I enjoy helping people when I can, rez anyone I see pretty much and try to lend a hand if it looks like someone is in trouble even though I am a newbie lol. I love to laugh, be silly and never plan on growing up completely. I try to spread fun and kindness wherever I go, after all, life is too short not to laugh as much as you can.

Interests: PvE mostly, would like to do dungeons at some point when I feel more confident, not really interested in PvP, might like to try WvWvW eventually, would love to try my hand at some jumping puzzles since I haven’t done any at all and still getting used to moving around period lol and…I fall down a lot lol doing Vistas lol but I try until I get ‘em even if it takes me awhile. I would like to buddy up with a few people for PvE and such, but I like taking my time, not rushing, just looking at everything, doing Hearts, Waypoints, Vistas, DEs, chatting, just having fun in general heehee.

Welcome shirookami and crowgrrrl! :] I think many of us can relate to the accidentally-on-purpose cliff diving. I splatted myself just the other day after getting to the top of a troublesome vista, only to promptly run off the other edge… All before I got the “view” in. Woo for splatting! xD

EDIT: I’m pretty excited for the Wintersday festivities. Those who have participated in GW2 events before – should I focus on leveling before Wintersday begins, or will there be fun things to do at every level? I’m level 30 or so.

@crowgrrrl / Aeleniel – accidental / on-purpose diving is almost a prerequisite in fitting in. lol. XDDD it’s even better rwhen you yell out “FOR TYRIAAAAAAAAAAAAA!” depending on how you feel, can swap “apples” for “Tyria”. but aww for missing the view and falling off, Aele! :// hehe

@shirookami – welcome!! what sort of build do you use for your engi? i’ve had mine at lvl 10 for far too long i think. hehe. hopefully someone in-game now will be able to send you an invite.

@Elowin – haha i’ll say, malchor’s leap is quite the different surrounding compared to the great white north that is Frostgorge!

what would be your “specific needs” for a guild? just outta curiosity and perhaps those more familiar with guilds will be able to offer more advice. : )) you can join up to 4 guilds anyways, so if you’d want to start your own guild, that works as well. so far, the two guilds i’m in are mainly social / dungeon running-ish. though lately been with more PUGs as haven’t been able to catch too many people on. i’m looking for a WvW guild as well. : ))

Are engineers still viable even if you hate turrets? They seem like fun, but I just… turrets… blarg.

i usually run around with my grenade or flamethrower kit : )))
barely touched turrets and aren’t really my thing other. t hough i’ve seen wonders done by other engis who use turrets.

Since it my first “just for fun” character, I wasn’t trying to get specific build. But now I wanna try to concentrate on conditional damage.

Hi Elowin, after talking to you last night and reading your post today I would recommend that you try to find a large PVE friendly guild on your own server. If you are only wanting a bit of co-operation with certain areas or events within maps, belonging to a large server-based guild will probably yield better results for you when you ask if there is anyone nearby to help/join-up with you.

You wouldn’t even need to party up with them from some things, but it can help in some instances as you can see party members as dots on your mini-map. If you want to dungeon you will need to party up – the recommended number for a dungeon party is 5 people.

With a bit of luck you will find a large guild that offers organised activities, perhaps group map clearance on a certain day, or guild dungeon runs – you could go along and pick up any bits you may have missed with the support of others. Another option would be to use their guild chat to ask if there is currently anyone from the guild on that same map as you and then you can whisper them to see if they would lend a hand.

Whilst you are more than welcome to stick with us in the Legion, we don’t have any active players on your server (I don’t think) so we can’t really offer you the sort of guild support you are looking for – always up for a chat though And you can be in more than one guild at a time (up to 4 or 5).

@Elowin I’m sorry but I don’t think we suit your desires. This is very much a social/casual guild. Though we do have members all over the place population is sparse in some areas.

I recommend that you seek a more active place for what you are looking for. I feel you’ll have better luck with a guild that is on your server only.

Welcome to GW2 and to Tyria. Just to let you know that you can still currently transfer servers for free once every 7 days, we don’t know how long this will be the case and as of yet there is no other way of ‘guesting’ with friends in open PvE – only through dungeons and then only EU-EU servers or NA-NA servers.

In response to your ‘the who in the what?’ comment – this very long thread has evolved over the past few months into a bit of a cross-server guild of people who like you are in the game for some fun, some company and to help others from time to time.

As we are cross server there are possibilities that other members will be on your server for partying up, we get together to do dungeons (some more rgularly than others) and we also have a lively guild chat that all can particpate in. I’ve even heard a rumour that we might have a website for more organised events but I begin to suspect this is a lie…

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in I can send you an invite, or if you want to take some time to find your feet in the game first that is fine too – we’re quite relaxed about the while thing.

Welcome all the new people! Man, you all are certainly keeping the admins on their toes with the invites! It seems like most of your questions have already been answered.

So pic 1 is why FGreenOak and I were dancing last night. It was much fun. We could have taken the wily beast ourselves, but I called in some backup in the shape of the hubby so that we could get to bed at a reasonable hour.

engineers are viable without turrets (if you look in the engi forum you’ll see how many don’t use them mostly because they get destroyed easliy). I’ve played around with a few ways to play, I decided to go with rifle and turrets (rifle, net and rocket) because I’m rebellious that way and wanted to make turrets work, although I do switch out a turret for grenade kit, but it depends on the situation. you can do a load of other things though, like elixer gun and elixers, or grenades, bombs and flamethrower. honestly there are loads of choices, most of which don’t use turrets. have a play with things, go to the mists and test kits and traits, and find what you’re comfortable with

and leveling for wintersday, hmmm, not sure on that. when halloween came around I had a level 60 ranger who I did most of the events and stuff with, but I also started playing my engi then too (he was level 10) and I was still able to do most of the content with him. my engi was 30-something when lost shores came, and I did phase 1 and 3 with him no problem. it all depends on what the content will be. saying that, if its a collection quest that sends you into higher levels there will more than likely be loads of other people going that way too. if its like the lost shores battles or the mad king dungeon you’ll probably be levelled up. so really, I’d say it was up to you if you level more or not, either way you won’t be alone in the events, there’ll not only be masses of other players, but also guild members too.

Just adding to what nottsman said, I was able to do all the Halloween stuff with a level ~20 ranger. I had help getting the book in the higher level areas (2nd Ed), but I got it no problem. I was also able to kill the Mad King a couple times. Once solo, although that took forever (kept the TV on in the background for entertainment, found a sweet spot and just kept shooting).

For you engi players, is there any way a rifle/elixr gun build could work? I though about making something hugely mobile with those wepaons and two movement utilities, but I really couldn’t get the traits/stats to support it.

And finally cliff diving. I main a melee ranger, mostly 1h sword. I hate bridges, narrow walkways, cliffs and precipices of all kinds with a passion. XD

Thanks for the answers to my silly questions! I really, really dislike my guardian (but I like the Sylvari) so I was thinking of making an engineer. Let me know, Helequin, if you find that rifle/elixir gun build… That sounds perfect!

rifle/elixir gun build can work. if you go 20/20/0/30/0. if you chose rifled barrels, fireforged trigger, fast acting elixirs, cleaning formula 409, and maybe protection injection, incendiary powder and acidic elixirs. and for skills have elixir gun, elixir B, elixir S and elite elixir X. might not work for everyone, but its something I’ve messed with

@Aeleniel: I will, but I’m definitely not the one to ask! As for the guardian, I really wish I could get into one of the heavy armour classes, but I’ve tested pretty much everything. Both are boring to my tastes (and I like melee!).

@nottsgman: Interesting idea. I’ll have to test that out, I couldn’t come up with a way to balance the power/conditions between rifle and elixir gun.

My main is a Ranger so far, but I’m also considering a melee necro and now this engineer as well.

^ Or you could try dual sword Mesmer? Pretty fun build imo.

You may think it’s a bit quishy but confusions and vulnerability make up for it.

@ Glitch: We all understand about the website. No worries! They take forever to program – that’s why I gave up on them a while ago. Keep up the great work, fearless leadery dude (as much as you can lead a mob of Asura). And I think we’ll need a photo reel for the guild’s main page that leaders can add to…

@Helequin: As you can see we have plenty of engineers around here. My hubby started a necro the other day (focusing on conditions, not pets) and is having a blast. Roll one and see how it works for you!

funny you say that Glitch, I am trying to figure out a mesmer build (just started one). I did expect him to be alot squishier to be honest. Kit’s guardian went down, I took on 7 enemies alone and survived just to pick her up. I expected to go down quickly after she did, came close a couple of times, but won in the end. anyway, back to original point. any mesmer tips? I’d be grateful for them

@Glitch: It’s a good suggestion, and one I’ve tried out multiple times. Also tried sword/torch for kicks. I just can’t stand the clones/phantasms, which kind of kills the class for me. I need a “deciever” or “illusionist” class apparently….

@DEKeyz: I have a necro, only level 3 but I messed around in sPvP a bunch. I just went for all spectral skills, pure Power/Vit/Toughness, dagger/focus and axe/warhorn. I focused on getting as much speed and as many snares as possible. It was hilarious to run people down all over, and bull into melee against warriors and guardians who clearly had no idea how to react. Defending a point against 5 enemies for a loing period was rather epic too.

Yes, yes I did turn a necro into a rush in and yell while cracking heads profession. I am a Norn….

Think I’m going to keep on with the Ranger for now, and play my necro with my friend who is still picking a class (or if anyone ever wants to sPvP)….

Hmm… All good discussion. I’ve been trying to decide between Necro, Mesmer, and Engineer for a while. I don’t like conjuring pets (though I don’t mind the permanent one in the Ranger profession), and I don’t like turrets either, as already stated. I’m also not so sure about phantasms/clones, but going dual sword sounds like fun.

Anything I should make sure to transfer over before I kill my Guardian?

Mesmer tips… Umm… Blurred fury is your best friend.
Get the trait that reduces cool downs by 20% asap if you’re doing for a sword build.
I dunno I’m still experimenting with my own Mesmer. I may know a lot of the classes and theory crafting but nothing beats execution.

May have tips as I level. I can’t decide what to lvl first. Mesmer or Guard….

@Hele I quite like the phantasms and clones. To me it’s the opposite as I think the illusions and stuff make for quite a good deciever theme, where you just get so confused on what’s what. Once I lvl my Guard and Mes gonna be a whole load of fun in dungeons running a different class. Mes will still have my melee preference but with more elegance.

Note : I think my bro took all my gold… And is using it on his alt… No fair!

Glitch, I should clarify a bit. I love the idea of the phantasms and clones. But I can’t stand the way it plays in game, with summoning essentially being an attack. Drives me absolutely up the wall. And with mesemer’s design, there is no way around it.

Now I know the mesmer illusions had to be different than necro summons or ranger pets and the difference is good. I just wish it was done…differently, or that there could be more of a manipulation focus than outright clones.

But yes, elegant melee is awesome which is what drew me to Sword+horn/GS on my Ranger.

Interested Activities: I’ll do anything, really. I do mostly PvE, but I want to do more dungeons. Done a little PvP. No WvW, but I’m not opposed to it.
Active: It varies. Usually Tuesday afternoons, and most evenings after 8:30ish. Weekends are hit & miss. I have a 1 year old and a 6 year old, a hubby, plus 2 jobs, so got to work around them.
Additional Comments: I’m fine soloing, but it’s been fun to do maps with others. I generally play with my hubby and my brothers-in-law, but it’s hard to find time for us all to play at the same time, and I don’t want to wait that long to do dungeons. I don’t really like going back and helping others clear maps I’ve already done, but I really need to go back and farm so I probably wouldn’t be opposed to it.

It was great seeing some of you in game this evening! Well chatting with you all, that is lol, while I was trying out my Norn Guardian. Nor sure how I feel about her yet lol since I am still low level. Kinda takes some getting used to because of the low health pool lol. Almost died jumping off after finishing a vista in Hoelbrak lol.

@Aeleniel – I used my low level Ranger, I think she was not much over 10, in the Lost Shores event and managed to do okay, lol died of course, many times lol, but rezzed people, did a little damage, my pet probably did the most lol and even managed to run all the way back to the Zerg I was with through all those nasties, blecch, lol and did not die lol, of course I did not stop running heck bent for leather lol. I hated those stupid head crab things lol.

I am trying to level up some of my characters, but it is hard because I cannot decide which to main, it is driving me batty lol. I want to make an Asura, but am undecided between Warrior, Engi, or Ele, or even Thief. I am trying to get the ones I created already to at least level 20 to see what I like best, but is that even a good idea? Arrgghh, so many things to try lol!

Just curious what some of you do not like about heavy armor classes? The Guardian in particular. I like hearing others’ opinions.

I don’t dislike heavy armor classes, but I don’t like my guardian. I think for the most part it’s because I’m enjoying ranged classes a lot better, based on the dynamic playstyle of GW2. The guardian only has a couple of ranged weapons (scepter and staff), and I don’t really like the weapon skills that go with them.

It is fun to pound on mobs with a hammer, though. ;]

Ho hum…me and heavy armour classes. These were the two I really, really wanted to like. But I don’t.

First thing first, is I tried a shout build with both. Found out that both are very effective. And shouts that add some boons are horribly boring to play with. Scratch that.

Enter the warrior. Lots of weapons to play with, but what the heck am I going to use as utilities? Shouts are gone. Physical are nice, but offer no group synergy at all. Banners? Gave it a shot. Full banner spec power/tough/vit warrior was kind of fun and isn’t cornered into any weapon set. The fun lasted just a few matches in sPvP, and it very quickly became derivative. The warrior just outright lacks interesting utility skills.

Enter the guardian. Favorite weapons are staff and sword/shield or torch. Look for a build. Immediately find that wanting to stay away from shouts and use those weapons has about zero possibility for any synergy whatsoever. I kept playing around with some of the other weapons I liked including hammer and GS, but even using mostly meditations/consecrations it felt very boring. I could see a consecration build with hammer/staff being amazing fun in WvW, but I’m not going to play the hours not enjoying things to try it out.

Much of my testing was done in the mists and then sPvP games. I wasn’t looking for the best builds in the world, but just what I would enjoy. Apparently from these two, it would be the aesthetics…..

In the end, I’ve found playing melee ranger and necro way more engaging and fluid. Not to mention, both classes have a few different SETS of utilities I both enjoy and could use viably (well, they will once some bugs are ironed out).
