Charging for runes, sigils, amulets and now champions is IMHO is totally wrong.

Currently in order to have access to all available builds you need:

6 Sigils @3g each
26 Runes @5g each
7 amulets @10g each
2 champion unlocks @15 each.

For a grand total of 196G
(The above are the ones I currently still have locked and as I know I have paid for at least one or two the actual total is over 200g)

Yes I know that you don’t need, and will probably never use many of them but the whole ethos for PvP from the very start has been that any player can jump in at any stage and have access to the same stats and gear as any other player.

As more and more runes and sigils are introduced the total is of course going to keep going up and up.

Get rid of all the useless experience tomes in pvp reward tracks and replace them with rune/sigil unlocks pls – this is just another ‘money grab’ that leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

I agree that it costs to many gold to unlock it all.

Unlocking some through pvp would be more preferred.

I disagree that the tomes should be removed completely,
allthough seeing less of them in exchange for sigels, runes and transmute charges,
would be better.

Having a gold sink in PvP is pointless but right now it is harmless. Most of the runes, sigils, amulets and even the champions aren’t as good as the free ones.

All by design. Don’t forget ArenaNet has (at least one) economist and data scientist on staff. These individuals work together to find user patterns and strategically get the most money out of each player possible. Amusement parks and arcade/entertainment centers do the same thing. Although not entirely pay to win. Largely it is and I doubt ArenaNet would argue that. It’s the Freemium model

I have the money to unlock them all if I choose but many players do not – particularly new players coming to try the game out.

My main point here is that; as all veterans will know – charging for PvP items goes against the whole ethos of what PvP in Guild wars has always been about.

I understand why they are charging for them and that the game is a business.

I couldn’t care less about what PvE stuff they sell in the gem store (and I’m mainly a PvE player) they could sell Hero Points, Mastery Points, pretty much anything and if ppl want to pay for it, that’s fine by me – it in no way affects my enjoyment of the game – but for some reason this particular form of PTW is just one step too far for me.

I understand why they have these unlocks. To a point. I also understand why they went with gold as opposed to glory. I thought it was dumb, but I understood their desire for ‘one universal currency.’

Personally, I think they did it better in GW1 where you could ‘discover’ (and thus unlock) a component (like an amulet) for pvp via identifying items in pve. OR if you pvped a lot, you could just use the Balth faction that you accumulated from playing, to purchase the pvp component.

Granted, gold is supposed to function roughly the same way as using Balth faction did in GW1, but the acquisition rate is a bit subpar. Thus resulting in some players feeling like are being forced into other modes in order to gain it in any decent quantity. I’m sure alternative options would be greatly appreciated by these people, and there isn’t anything wrong with having other options available.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Those tomes is the only way a PvP player will get an 80 character.

Don’t even suggest PvE, that is not PvP.

(Nevermind actually, I forgot that HoT punishes people for buying character slots which is why I’m sitting on a full stack of them)

I mostly play for the new Free-For-All arena in PvP lobby.

It’s rather mind boggling to see how drastically wrong the system has gone. Hopefully, if they want to be considered a real e-sport they will fix this and make the reward tracks the only thing gated by gold going forward.

And that can easily change with meta. What if some time down the road the core amulets can no longer compete with newer ones that Anet may introduce?

That will most likely never happen, but the current system definitely leaves that as a possibility. And ideally, that possibility should not even exist. PvP should be made accessible, just like in the beginning of the game, if they want more people to participate and compete.

Spot on and it comes back to how the priorities of anet changed after release from what they were before. They wanted sPvP to be fully accessible to everyone to make it an esport, now you have to spend a large amount of gold to unlock these items and you have to buy HOT to access the elite specs that are upgrades on the base classes in most cases.

Whoa whoa whoa…… Tomes is pretty much the foremost reason I sPvP. The Meta right now is horrid and I had far more fun with my Bomb Turret Engi last Spring. Tomes and some other Reward Track items is the only reason I give a frick about PvP.

Though I do completely agree, these prices are at WTF Level?

Reward tracks is what first drew me to Spvp as a previous dedicated wvw roamer. I now pvp for dyes and xmutes primarily (aside from just trying to have fun and play hard).
